1. La consejería como ministerio cristiano1. Counseling as Christian Ministry
Biblical counseling begins with people, not problems. A person who comes for help is not merely a case of anxiety, anger, grief, marriage conflict, addiction, guilt, or discouragement. He or she is a person created in the image of God and living before God in a fallen world. Christian counseling therefore seeks more than the removal of unpleasant feelings. It seeks truthful understanding, wise action, restored relationships where possible, growth in Christ, and hope.
The Bible contains no modern counseling office, but it contains an extensive ministry of counsel. Moses listened to disputes. Wisdom literature teaches people how to live. The prophets confronted sin and comforted the afflicted. Jesus asked questions, exposed motives, showed compassion, confronted hypocrisy, welcomed the ashamed, and restored the fallen. Paul described ministry that included admonishing the idle, encouraging the fainthearted, helping the weak, and being patient with everyone (1 Thessalonians 5:14).
Personas diferentes necesitan respuestas diferentes. That final sentence is a useful counseling rule because different people need different responses. The idle person may need admonition. The discouraged person may need encouragement. The weak person may need support. Applying the same response to everyone is not biblical faithfulness; it is pastoral laziness.
2. La Escritura y el consejero2. Scripture and the Counselor
Scripture is the counselor's final theological authority. It tells us who human beings are, what sin is, what grace is, who Christ is, what reconciliation means, and where lasting hope is found. Second Timothy 3:16–17 presents Scripture as profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.
That does not mean the Bible is a medical encyclopedia or that every human problem can be diagnosed by locating a verse with the same word. Scripture itself teaches us to observe creation, listen to testimony, seek wise counsel, and recognize the value of ordinary knowledge. A physician can tell us whether a person's confusion is related to infection, medication, dementia, intoxication, or another medical condition. That information does not compete with Scripture. It helps the pastor understand the person to whom Scripture is being applied.
Biblical authority should therefore never become an excuse for ignorance. A pastor who tells a diabetic to stop insulin, a severely depressed person to abandon prescribed medication, or a victim of violence simply to submit is not demonstrating confidence in Scripture. He is moving beyond his competence and may cause serious harm.
3. Escuchar antes de hablar3. Listening Before Speaking
Proverbs repeatedly praises careful listening. Proverbs 18:13 warns against answering before hearing. Counselors often fail because they begin solving a problem before they understand it.
Good listening seeks facts, feelings, interpretations, relationships, history, and hopes. What happened? When did it begin? What changed? Who else is involved? What has already been tried? What does the person fear? What outcome does the person want? What does the person believe God thinks about the situation?
Escuchar bien busca hechos, sentimientos, interpretaciones, relaciones, historia y esperanzas. ¿Qué ocurrió? ¿Cuándo comenzó? ¿Qué cambió? ¿Quién está involucrado? ¿Qué se ha intentado? ¿Qué teme la persona? ¿Qué resultado desea? Las preguntas deben aclarar, no interrogar.Questions should clarify rather than interrogate. Silence can be useful. A counselor does not need to fill every pause. People sometimes discover what they really think only after they have been allowed to speak without interruption.
Su teología contenía verdades, pero aplicaron esas verdades falsamente a Job.Listening also guards against premature moral judgment. Job's friends initially did something remarkable: they sat with him in silence for seven days. Their ministry deteriorated when they became certain they knew why he suffered. Their theology contained truths, but they applied those truths falsely to Job.
4. El corazón, el cuerpo y las circunstancias4. The Heart, Behavior, and Circumstances
Jesus taught that words and actions arise from the heart. Biblical counseling therefore looks beneath behavior to desires, fears, loyalties, beliefs, and worship. Yet this must not become another simplistic formula. Human beings are embodied persons. Sleep deprivation, chronic pain, neurological disease, hormones, trauma, medication, poverty, abuse, and social isolation can influence thought and behavior.
A useful pastoral model considers three dimensions together: the heart, the body, and the situation. The heart asks what a person believes, loves, fears, desires, and chooses. The body asks whether illness, injury, medication, substances, exhaustion, or another physical factor may be involved. The situation asks what pressures, relationships, losses, temptations, or injustices surround the person.
The counselor should resist explaining every problem by only one dimension. A person can be both sinned against and sinful in response. A person can have a medical disorder and also need spiritual growth. A person can need repentance and compassion at the same time.
5. Pecado, sufrimiento y responsabilidad5. Sin, Suffering, and Responsibility
One of the most important counseling distinctions is the difference between sin and suffering. Some problems result directly from a person's choices. Others are consequences of another person's sin, disease, accident, bereavement, persecution, or living in a fallen world. Often the two overlap.
Jesus rejected the assumption that every tragedy can be traced to a particular personal sin. The book of Job makes the same point dramatically. Counselors therefore must not tell suffering people that their pain proves hidden sin.
At the same time, suffering does not remove all moral responsibility. A wounded person may respond with bitterness, deception, vengeance, substance abuse, or destructive withdrawal. Biblical counsel can acknowledge genuine victimization while helping the person choose faithful responses.
Repentance should be specific rather than vague. It involves truthful confession, turning from sin, receiving God's forgiveness, and where appropriate making restitution or seeking reconciliation. Repentance is not the same as shame. The gospel does not merely tell sinners that they are bad; it announces that Christ receives repentant sinners and gives new life.
6. Gracia, culpa y perdón6. Grace, Guilt, and Forgiveness
No siempre coinciden. Guilt can mean at least two different things. Objective guilt means that a person has actually done wrong. Subjective guilt is the feeling of being guilty. The two do not always match. A person can be guilty and feel nothing, or be innocent and feel crushing shame.
The counselor therefore asks not merely, 'Do you feel guilty?' but, 'What happened, and what does God call it?' When there is real sin, the answer is not denial but confession and grace. First John 1:9 joins confession with God's faithfulness to forgive and cleanse.
Forgiveness must also be taught carefully. Forgiving someone does not mean calling evil good, pretending nothing happened, refusing lawful protection, or automatically restoring trust. Reconciliation normally requires participation by both parties; forgiveness can begin even when the offender refuses to repent. Trust, once broken, may require time and demonstrated faithfulness to rebuild.
In cases of abuse, a counselor must never use forgiveness to pressure a victim back into danger. Civil authorities have a God-given role in restraining wrongdoing. Safety and truth are not enemies of grace.
7. Cambio y crecimiento cristiano7. Change and Christian Growth
Biblical change is more than stopping a behavior. Paul often describes change with a pattern of putting off the old way, renewing the mind, and putting on the new way. Ephesians 4 illustrates this clearly: the thief stops stealing, begins honest work, and becomes a giver. The liar does not merely stop lying; he learns to speak truth.
This pattern helps counseling become concrete. 'Do better' is poor counsel. A useful plan identifies what should stop, what biblical truth should reshape thinking, and what faithful behavior should replace the old pattern.
Change is ordinarily progressive. Some conversions produce dramatic immediate changes, but sanctification usually includes repeated practice, failure, confession, learning, and growth. Counselors should neither excuse persistent sin nor demand instant maturity.
Small assignments can help: a Scripture passage to read, a conversation to initiate, a spending record, a sleep routine, a gratitude practice, removal of access to temptation, an appointment with a physician, or a plan for accountability. Homework is useful when it serves discipleship rather than becoming a substitute for grace.
8. Límites de la competencia pastoral8. Boundaries of Pastoral Competence
A pastor is not automatically a physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, attorney, addiction specialist, or emergency responder. Wise ministry knows when another kind of help is needed.
Referral is not pastoral failure. A counselor should seek appropriate professional or emergency help when there is serious risk of suicide or homicide, psychosis, severe eating disorder, dangerous withdrawal from substances, suspected neurological illness, serious domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, or another condition beyond the counselor's training.
Confidentiality is important but not absolute. Counselors should explain its limits at the beginning rather than after a crisis occurs. Laws differ by jurisdiction, especially concerning abuse of children or vulnerable persons and threats of serious harm. Pastors should know the rules that apply where they minister.
When immediate danger exists, preserving life takes priority over preserving the ordinary privacy of a counseling conversation.
9. Un proceso sencillo de consejería9. A Simple Counseling Process
A practical pastoral counseling meeting can follow a flexible sequence.
First, establish safety and relationship. Welcome the person, pray when appropriate, and determine whether there is an immediate crisis.
Second, gather the story. Listen before diagnosing. Clarify the problem, history, relationships, physical factors, spiritual concerns, and previous attempts to solve it.
Third, identify the central issues. Distinguish what the person has suffered from what the person has chosen. Consider heart, body, and circumstances.
Fourth, bring biblical truth to the actual issue. Avoid sermons unrelated to the person's problem. Explain Scripture in context and connect it carefully to the situation.
Fifth, agree on a realistic next step. Good counsel normally ends with something concrete rather than merely an interesting conversation.
Sixth, follow up. Ask what happened, what helped, what failed, and what new information appeared. Counseling is often a process of repeated listening, clarification, biblical instruction, practice, and encouragement.
10. El carácter del consejero10. The Counselor's Character
The counselor's character matters as much as technique. Galatians 6:1 tells spiritual believers to restore a person gently while watching themselves. The counselor is never above the gospel being offered to another person.
Humility makes it possible to say, 'I was wrong,' 'I do not know,' or 'This is beyond my training.' Patience allows a person to grow slowly. Courage permits necessary confrontation. Compassion keeps confrontation from becoming cruelty. Wisdom knows that these virtues must work together.
Counselors must also guard against dependency. The goal is not to make counselees unable to act without the counselor. Healthy counseling points people toward Christ, Scripture, mature Christian community, responsible decision-making, and appropriate sources of help.
The Christian counselor is neither savior nor Holy Spirit. We speak truth, love people, use wisdom, and pray. God remains the one who changes hearts.
11. Conflicto matrimonial y familiar11. Marriage and Family Conflict
Marriage counseling should begin by hearing both people carefully rather than deciding too quickly who is the problem. Scripture calls husbands and wives to covenant faithfulness, truth, sacrificial love, respect, sexual fidelity, forgiveness, and service. Those commands are never permission for one spouse to control or endanger the other.
Conflict often develops in cycles. One person criticizes, the other withdraws; withdrawal increases frustration, which produces stronger criticism. A counselor can help a couple identify the cycle without pretending that both parties are equally responsible for every problem. Adultery, violence, coercion, chronic deception, and abandonment require direct moral clarity.
Communication counsel should be concrete. James tells believers to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Ephesians commands truthful speech and warns against destructive words. Couples can learn to describe a problem without attacking character, listen well enough to repeat the other's concern accurately, make specific requests, and postpone a discussion when anger makes constructive conversation impossible.
Reconciliation is a worthy goal, but safety comes first when violence or credible threats are present. A pastor should not conduct ordinary couples counseling while one spouse is terrorizing the other. Separate assessment, safety planning, professional assistance, and appropriate authorities may be necessary.
12. Duelo, pérdida y soledad12. Grief, Loss, and Loneliness
Grief is not unbelief. Jesus wept at Lazarus's tomb even though he knew resurrection was moments away. Paul tells Christians not to grieve as those who have no hope; he does not tell them not to grieve.
People mourn more than death. They grieve divorce, infertility, disability, retirement, migration, loss of employment, estrangement from children, decline in health, and the disappearance of a future they expected to have. Counselors should not rush grief by offering religious slogans.
Presence is often more valuable than explanation. Romans 12:15 says to weep with those who weep. The Psalms give believers language for lament, protest, memory, trust, and hope. Lament brings pain to God rather than pretending pain does not exist.
Complicated or prolonged grief may require additional help, particularly when the person cannot function, becomes severely depressed, abuses substances, or develops suicidal thoughts. Christian hope in resurrection strengthens responsible care; it does not replace it.
13. Temor, ansiedad y desaliento13. Fear, Anxiety, and Discouragement
The Bible repeatedly says, 'Do not fear,' but those words are invitations to trust, not weapons for shaming frightened people. Fear can arise from genuine danger, imagined danger, learned patterns, physical illness, trauma, exhaustion, or a combination of causes.
Jesus' teaching in Matthew 6 redirects anxious attention toward the Father's knowledge and care. Paul in Philippians 4 joins prayer with disciplined attention to what is true and worthy. These passages do not promise that faithful Christians will never experience anxiety. They teach practices of trust within anxiety.
A counselor can help distinguish productive concern from unproductive rumination. Productive concern asks, 'What faithful action can I take?' Rumination repeatedly rehearses possibilities without moving toward wise action. Practical steps may include prayer, sleep, exercise, reducing stimulants, limiting compulsive news or social media consumption, confronting an avoided responsibility, seeking medical evaluation, and learning to tolerate uncertainty.
Severe panic, persistent inability to function, or symptoms suggesting a medical condition deserve professional assessment. The counselor should never make a person choose between trusting God and receiving competent care.
14. Ira y conflicto14. Anger and Conflict
Efesios permite estar airado mientras prohíbe pecar.Anger can reveal both what we value and how we respond when that value is threatened. Scripture sometimes describes righteous anger, yet James warns that human anger does not produce God's righteousness. Ephesians permits anger while forbidding sin and prolonged resentment.
The counseling task is not simply to tell an angry person to calm down. Ask what happened, what the person wanted, what seemed threatened, and what the anger produced. Anger may expose pride or selfish control, but it can also respond to genuine injustice. Even justified anger can become destructive when it seeks revenge or harms innocent people.
No basta decir «cálmate». Useful practices include slowing the conversation, identifying bodily signs of escalation, leaving temporarily when safety requires it, refusing insults and threats, addressing one issue at a time, and returning to the matter when self-control is restored.
Violence is not merely 'an anger problem.' Threats, strangulation, stalking, forced sex, destruction of property, access to weapons in a threatening context, or escalating violence require safety assessment and specialized intervention.
15. Adicción y hábitos esclavizantes15. Addiction and Enslaving Habits
Reducir toda adicción a enfermedad pura o mala elección pura suele simplificar demasiado.Scripture speaks realistically about desires that become masters. Paul can say, 'I will not be mastered by anything.' Addiction involves patterns of desire, reinforcement, bodily adaptation, habit, relationships, and often profound shame. Reducing every addiction either to pure disease or pure bad choice usually oversimplifies the person.
Biblical counseling emphasizes both responsibility and compassion. The person may need to confess deception, theft, sexual immorality, neglect, or other sins connected with an addiction. At the same time, withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other substances can be medically dangerous and should not be treated casually by an unqualified pastor.
Recovery usually requires more than willpower. Useful supports can include medical treatment, structured recovery programs, accountability, removal of access, changed routines, honest financial controls, supportive relationships, and attention to the desires or pain that the addictive behavior has been serving.
Relapse should be taken seriously without treating it as proof that change is impossible. The counselor asks what preceded the relapse, what safeguards failed, what deception returned, and what should change in the recovery plan.
16. Crisis, abuso y seguridad16. Crisis, Abuse, and Safety
A counseling crisis changes priorities. When there is immediate danger, the first task is not a long Bible study but protection of life. Ask direct questions when suicide, homicide, abuse, or violence is suspected. Asking whether someone is thinking about suicide does not plant the idea; it can open the door to honest assessment.
If a person has suicidal intent, a plan, access to lethal means, or cannot remain safe, do not leave the person alone while merely promising to pray. Obtain emergency or qualified professional help appropriate to the location.
Abuse counseling requires special caution. An abuser may minimize, blame the victim, use tears strategically, or quote Scripture about submission and forgiveness. The church must not become an instrument of coercion. Reports of child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, or abuse of vulnerable adults may create legal reporting obligations depending on jurisdiction.
The counselor should document important facts carefully, avoid promising secrecy that cannot be kept, and seek competent guidance. Spiritual care continues throughout the crisis, but spiritual care includes truth, protection, justice, and compassion.
17. La consejería en la iglesia local17. Counseling in the Local Church
Counseling should not belong only to specialists. Romans 15:14 describes believers as able to instruct one another, and Galatians 6 calls Christians to bear one another's burdens. Mature churches create cultures in which people can ask for help before problems become disasters.
Not every member should counsel every problem. Churches need clear levels of care. Ordinary friendship and discipleship can address many struggles. Trained pastoral counseling can address more complicated spiritual and relational issues. Medical, psychiatric, legal, safeguarding, and emergency problems may require outside expertise.
Church leaders should develop written practices for confidentiality, records, child protection, allegations against leaders, referrals, and emergencies. Informality is not always spirituality. Good procedures protect both vulnerable people and faithful ministers.
The church also provides something an office cannot: long-term community. A counselee may need meals after bereavement, transportation to treatment, help finding employment, friendship after leaving an abusive group, mentoring, prayer, and ordinary Christian fellowship. Counseling is strongest when it reconnects people with healthy community rather than creating permanent dependence on a counselor.
18. Casos para la práctica pastoral18. Case Studies for Pastoral Practice
Case One: A church member says, 'I know God has forgiven me, but I cannot forgive myself.' The counselor should clarify whether unconfessed sin remains, whether restitution is needed, and whether the person is treating personal feelings as a higher court than God's promise. The goal is neither cheap reassurance nor endless self-punishment, but honest repentance followed by confidence in grace.
Case Two: A wife says her husband shoves her during arguments but immediately apologizes and quotes Ephesians about forgiveness. The counselor should not begin ordinary marriage communication exercises. Safety, separate assessment, accountability, and appropriate professional or legal intervention come first.
Case Three: A faithful Christian reports weeks of insomnia, racing thoughts, unusual energy, impulsive spending, and increasingly grand religious plans. The counselor should not simply praise spiritual enthusiasm or argue theology. A prompt medical or mental-health evaluation is appropriate while pastoral support continues.
Case Four: A widower says he no longer enjoys church and cries every day three months after his wife's death. Grief itself should not be pathologized. Listen, assess functioning and safety, help him lament, maintain relationships, and watch for signs that additional care is needed.
Case Five: A man repeatedly views pornography, confesses after discovery, and promises never to do it again. Effective counsel should move beyond promises to a concrete plan: identify triggers, remove access, establish accountability, address deception, rebuild damaged trust, and examine the desires and habits feeding the behavior.
Case Six: A counselee says, 'My doctor gave me an antidepressant, but taking it means I do not trust God.' The counselor should reject the false choice. Medication is neither automatically necessary nor automatically unspiritual. The person can discuss benefits, risks, and alternatives with a qualified clinician while pursuing prayer, Scripture, community, and wise habits.
These cases teach a central principle: biblical counseling is not the art of attaching a verse to a problem. It is the ministry of understanding a person truthfully and bringing God's truth, wise action, compassionate presence, and appropriate help to the actual situation.
Conclusión: verdad, sabiduría y amorConclusion: Truth, Wisdom, and Love
Biblical counseling is an expression of Christian discipleship. It listens carefully, tells the truth about sin and suffering, announces grace in Jesus Christ, seeks wise and concrete change, protects vulnerable people, and recognizes the limits of pastoral competence.
The counselor does not need to know everything. He needs enough humility to listen, enough biblical knowledge to speak faithfully, enough wisdom to distinguish different kinds of problems, enough courage to confront evil, and enough love to remain with people while change is slow.
The goal is not merely that a counselee feels better, though relief is a gift worth seeking. The larger goal is that people learn to live truthfully before God and neighbor, finding hope in Christ and growing in faithful love.
