1. "Kanuni ya Maandiko" Inamaanisha Nini — na Haimaanishi Nini1. What "Canon" Means — and What It Does Not

Kanisa halikuamua; lilipambanua. The word "canon" comes from a Greek term, kanōn, meaning a measuring reed, a rule. The canon is the list of books that are Scripture — the measure of what belongs and what does not. And here is something crucial: a book is not Scripture because a council said so; the council recognized what God had already given. The image helps. An assayer certifies gold, but he does not make it gold; the gold was precious before he arrived with his scale. In the same way, the synagogue and the church did not create the canon — they received it and recognized it. Scripture's authority is intrinsic, because it is God-breathed; recognition is the community catching up to what was already true. This flows straight out of Unit 1: authority belongs to the Word itself, not to those who acknowledge it. Hold this distinction and you will not be confused when someone says, "the church decided which books are the Bible." The church did not decide; it discerned.

2. Muundo wa Biblia ya Kiebrania: Sheria, Manabii, Maandishi2. The Shape of the Hebrew Bible: Law, Prophets, Writings

The Old Testament came in three parts. First, the Law — the Torah, the five books of Moses — recognized first and earliest, placed beside the ark (Deuteronomy 31:24–26). Second, the Prophets (Nevi'im), which the Jews divided into the Former Prophets (Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings) and the Latter (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Twelve). Third, the Writings (Ketuvim), which include the Psalms, Proverbs, Job, and more. This threefold shape is old, and Jesus Himself reflects it.

"...ni lazima yatimizwe yote yaliyoandikwa katika Torati ya Musa, na katika Manabii, na katika Zaburi, yanihusuyo" (Luka 24:44)."...all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me" (Luke 24:44).

The Psalms, the first and largest book of the Writings, stand for that whole third part. These are the same books we have, grouped in another way. When Jesus named the three parts, He was describing a Hebrew Bible already known and settled.

3. Jinsi Vitabu Vilivyotambuliwa3. How the Books Were Recognized

How did these books come to be recognized as Scripture? Not by a vote on a date, but over time, by certain marks. A book carried authority if it came from a prophet or under prophetic authority — a spokesman to whom God had spoken. It agreed with what God had already revealed; it did not contradict the Word given before. It bore the unmistakable ring of God's own voice, which His people learned to know. And it was received and used by the covenant community across the generations. The Law was recognized in Moses' day; the Prophets, as they came; the Writings, gathered over time. Recognition was a settling, not a manufacturing. No one sat down to invent which books would be holy; the people of God recognized the voice already speaking in them, the way a sheep knows the voice of its shepherd.

4. Kanuni ya Maandiko Aliyoishika Yesu4. The Canon Jesus Held

Jesus and the apostles received a settled Hebrew canon and treated it as the Word that cannot be broken: "the Scripture cannot be broken" (John 10:35); "It is written." And Jesus marked its edges. In Luke 11:51 He speaks of the blood of the martyrs "from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah" — the first and the last murders in the Hebrew Bible's own order (Genesis to Chronicles, since Chronicles stands last in the Hebrew arrangement). It is like saying "from Genesis to Revelation": He drew a line around the whole Hebrew Scriptures. The Old Testament was already fixed when He taught from it. He was not completing it or correcting it; He took it for granted as the settled Word of God, and He called His hearers to submit to it.

5. Ushahidi Kutoka Nje: Yosefo5. The Witness from Outside: Josephus

Watu wasiothubutu kubadilisha vitabu vyao hawakuwa wakisubiri baraza liviamue. We also have testimony from outside the Bible. The Jewish historian Josephus, writing about AD 95 (in Against Apion), says the Jews have a fixed number of books, written between Moses and the reign of Artaxerxes, to which nothing has been added since — and which no one dares to alter. He counts them as twenty-two. This is outside testimony that, by the first century, the Hebrew canon was closed and known — not open and still under debate. A people who did not dare to change their books were not waiting for a council to decide them.

6. Kwa Nini Idadi Zinatofautiana: 22, 24, na 396. Why the Numbers Differ: 22, 24, and 39

The believer in the pew hears "22 books," "24 books," "39 books," and wonders which is right. They are the same books, counted differently. The Hebrew tradition reached 22 (matching the letters of the Hebrew alphabet) or 24, by treating the twelve Minor Prophets as one book, and joining Samuel, Kings, Chronicles, and Ezra-Nehemiah each as single books. Our English and Spanish Bibles split those out and reach 39. Nothing is added or removed — only grouped differently. It is like counting a dozen eggs as "one" (a carton) or as "twelve" (the eggs): the contents do not change. (The Apocrypha, which is a genuinely separate question, waits for the next unit; there we will ask why some Bibles include extra books at all.)

7. Ngamia Anayestahili Kukataliwa: "Baraza la Jamnia"7. A Camel Worth Refusing: The "Council of Jamnia"

Hatumezi dai kwa sababu limezoeleka. Tunalijaribu. We do not swallow a claim because it is familiar. We test it.

Here the unit applies its own rule. For a long time it was widely taught — in classrooms, from pulpits, in good faith — that the Old Testament canon was closed by a Jewish council at Jamnia (Yavneh) about AD 90. Whole generations of students were handed that claim on a trusted teacher's word and never checked it. But when you go looking for that council, you do not find it. The idea traces to a nineteenth-century scholar's reconstruction, not to any ancient record. What the rabbis at Yavneh actually discussed was whether books like Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs "defile the hands" — and that very discussion assumes the books were already treated as Scripture. There was no committee that met to decide the canon. And notice: correcting the error does not weaken the conservative case — it strengthens it. The truth is not "a late Jewish council voted the canon in"; the truth is that the canon was recognized far earlier and needed no council to make it so. This is exactly the discipline of Unit 1: we do not swallow a claim because it is familiar; we test it, and we let the evidence lead us to the more honest — and here, the more conservative — conclusion.

8. Vitabu Sahihi Mikononi Mwako8. The Right Books in Your Hands

So the first witness has spoken. The Old Testament in your Bible is not a later collection imposed by a council; it is the Hebrew Scriptures recognized over centuries and already settled in Jesus' day — the very books He read, quoted, and called unbreakable. When you open to Genesis, or the Psalms, or Malachi, you are holding what He held. The right books. In the next unit we turn to the New Testament — and to the honest question of the extra books some Bibles include: the Apocrypha. Do they belong? Why are they in some Bibles and not others? The second side of the first witness awaits.
