Chumba cha Masomo ya Ziada

The art of teaching — chagua matatu yoyote

The Master's textbook test: read Trumbull, Teaching and Teachers (assigned excerpts), then take its test: twenty fill-in-the-blank questions, drawn from forty; eighteen right passes. Each answer is marked right or wrong at once. Correct answers and explanations are available after the attempt passes. It is separate from the reading test on the five digests below: passing one does not pass the other. On the M.Div. and Th.M. tracks both tests are being introduced; each test's page says whether it is in force yet. Until then any student may take them, and a pass is kept in your record.

Jinsi ya kutumia rafu hii

This course is about teaching — the ministry by which the faith is handed on, and disciples of Jesus are made and grown. These five readings are Chapala Theological Seminary digests, each drawn from the great public-domain classics of Christian education — John Amos Comenius, Augustine, Herman Harrell Horne, and John Milton Gregory — and each written to be read on its own, in English, Spanish or French. Choose any three, read them in full, and record your reading below.

The Master's reading test: separate from the honors invitation below. Honors asks you to read any three of these digests; the Master's test covers all five. It has twenty fill-in-the-blank questions, four from each reading, drawn from forty; eighteen right passes. Each answer is marked right or wrong at once; correct answers and explanations are available after the attempt passes. You may try again after a short wait. The test is being introduced: its page says whether it is in force yet. Until then any student may take it, and a pass is kept in your record.

Somo la the digests & the links

Every one of these five readings is a Chapala Theological Seminary digest, written by CTS and available here on the site — all of them open directly from this page, in English, Spanish or French, with nothing to download. Each digest draws on a public-domain classic of Christian education, but the digests themselves are CTS-authored teaching, not reproductions, and the classic works they rest on are freely available online for any who wish to read them in full.

Kusoma kwa lugha nyingine

Most of these works are in English. If you would rather read in Spanish, French or another language, the Chrome browser can translate a whole page for you. On a computer, right-click anywhere on the opened reading and choose “Translate to…”. On an Android phone or tablet, tap the three-dot menu and choose “Translate”. On an iPhone or iPad, tap the translate icon in the address bar. Machine translation is not perfect, but it is enough to follow the argument.

Why Christian Education? · Why a Man Must Be Taught to Be a Man
    1. The Great Didactic

The chapter title is this unit’s question, answered by the man usually called the father of modern teaching — who was a bishop, and who wrote the whole book to reform schools because he believed the salvation of the human race was at stake. His answer: the seeds of knowledge, virtue, and piety are planted in every child, but seeds are not fruit. Stone must be cut. Metal must be dug and refined. And a man must be taught, or he is not yet a man. Then, to prove it, Comenius tells you about two children raised by wolves — one found in Hesse in 1540, one caught in a hunting net in France in 1563 — who could not stand upright or speak until they were brought back among people. He is not being colourful. He is showing you what a human being is without a teacher.

You — The Teacher · When Your Own Teaching Goes Flat
    2. On the Catechising of the Uninstructed

The most useful thing on this shelf, and it is sixteen centuries old. A deacon named Deogratias wrote to Augustine with a problem every teacher has and few admit: people kept being sent to him because he was good at this, and his own teaching had become — his words — profitless and distasteful even to himself. Augustine wrote him a book. Chapter 10 is where he turns from method to the teacher’s own heart and names six reasons your teaching feels dead to you, beginning with the one that will land: your mind moves like a flash and your mouth moves like a mouth, and you grieve at the gap. His first comfort is a confession — with me, too, it is almost always the fact that my speech displeases myself. His remedy is the hen with her drooping feathers, and the mother putting small chewed morsels into her child’s mouth. Is it a pleasure to lisp broken words, he asks, unless love invites us?

You — The Teacher · How a Church Finds and Trains One
    3. The Gift of Teaching and Local Church Ministry

The shortest reading here and the most immediately usable, written by a man who has taught in church education for forty years and still superintends a Sunday School. It works the other side of the desk from Augustine: not what the teacher feels, but how a congregation finds the people God has gifted and then actually develops them. Three ways to spot them — conversation, observation, recommendation — and two ways to grow them: training, and mentoring. The mentoring plan is worth the reading by itself, and you could start it next month. Six weeks: two watching a seasoned teacher, two teaching alongside, two teaching under supervision, and then an honest conversation about what worked. Most churches hand a new teacher a quarterly and wish them well. This is what it looks like to do it on purpose.

Jesus — The Master Teacher · What Made Him One
    4. Jesus the Master Teacher

Written when almost nobody was studying the pedagogy of Jesus — not His message, which everyone studied, but His method. Horne asks a question that sounds impertinent until you follow it: what would a teacher have to possess to teach the whole world? He answers in five, and then measures Jesus against them. A vision that takes in the world. Knowledge of the heart of man. Mastery of the subject. Aptness in teaching. And a life that embodies what it teaches — which is where four of the five collapse for the rest of us. Horne’s verdict is not sentimental; he argues it. If you preach, you will notice the shape of this chapter before you notice its content: a keyword, five parallel divisions, and a conclusion that gathers them. He is doing to Jesus what you do to a text.

The Learners · You Cannot Teach a Mind That Is Not There
    5. The Seven Laws of Teaching

For a hundred and forty years this has been the handbook they put in the hands of new Sunday School teachers, and chapter 3 is the one that stings. The law is almost embarrassingly plain — the learner must attend with interest to the material to be learned — and then Gregory shows you it is not plain at all. One may as well talk to the dead, he says, as teach a child who is wholly inattentive. Attention comes in three kinds, and the kind you want cannot be commanded; it has to be earned, and it is bought with effort. Then he turns and puts the blame where it belongs. The teacher who feels no great interest in his own work “seeks to compel the attention which he is unable to attract, and awakens disgust instead of delight.” Read his fourteen rules slowly. Several of them you broke last Sunday.

The Learning Environment · Discipline Is Not the Rod
    6. The Great Didactic

Comenius wrote in a century that assumed children are taught by beating, and he disagreed, in print, in 1633. He had a stated aim for the whole book: to find a method by which teachers may teach less, but learners may learn more; by which schools may have less noise, aversion, and useless labour, and more leisure, enjoyment, and solid progress. This chapter is that aim applied to the room. His rule is simple enough to miss: discipline is never administered in the moment of anger. And his underlying conviction is still the answer to nearly every behaviour problem you will ever have — the school should be a place so attractive that the child wants to be in it. He quotes Gregory Nazianzen: to educate a man is the art of arts.

Catechesis · The Teacher Must Remain a Learner
    7. The Large Catechism

Luther addresses pastors and teachers who have grown careless about learning the faith they are supposed to teach. His remedy is not novelty but repeated return to the commandments, creed, Lord’s Prayer, and sacraments. This selection gives Christian educators a needed warning: familiarity with elementary doctrine is never permission to stop studying it. The teacher who has ceased to learn will soon teach without freshness, humility, or accuracy.

Review · Securing and Completing the Work
    8. The Seven Laws of Teaching

Gregory’s final law explains why teaching is not complete when material has merely been presented once. Review organizes knowledge, exposes misunderstanding, strengthens memory, and enables the learner to use truth independently. This chapter complements the earlier Gregory selection by carrying the teacher from presentation to retention and application.

Method · Questions That Awaken the Mind
    9. Jesus the Master Teacher

Jesus often taught by asking questions that made hearers examine assumptions, name their convictions, and reach conclusions. Horne studies that practice as a method of instruction. The chapter helps teachers move beyond uninterrupted lecture and use questions to make students think, speak, and apply biblical truth.

    10. On the Catechising of the Uninstructed

Augustine tells the teacher to notice who is sitting in front of him: educated or uneducated, eager or reluctant, familiar or completely new. The content of the faith does not change, but the wise teacher adjusts pace, explanation, and approach. This is an early and remarkably practical treatment of learner-centered instruction without doctrinal compromise.
