Tunachohifadhi.

Andi continues, turning from the Master Teacher to the learners themselves — the children, youth, and adults who walk into our classrooms with histories, questions, and hungers we did not put there.

Wanafunzi — na Wakati Unaofaa wa KufundishaThe Learners — and the Teachable Moment

"Nawe uwafundishe watoto wako kwa bidii, na kuyanena...""You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them..."
— Kumbukumbu la Torati 6:6–7 (SUV)Unit Scripture: "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up." — Deuteronomy 6:6–7 (NKJV)

Utangulizi: Maswali Mawili kwa MwalimuOrientation: Two Questions for the Teacher

Every teacher who walks into a classroom on Sunday morning faces two questions before he ever opens his lesson plan. The first question is, "Who are these learners?" The second question is, "When are they ready to learn?" A teacher who cannot answer the first question is teaching a generic lesson to no one in particular. A teacher who cannot answer the second question is delivering a perfectly prepared lesson at exactly the wrong moment.

This unit takes both questions in turn. The first three sections look at the learners themselves — children, youth, and adults — because each age has its own way of receiving the Word. The fourth section looks at the individual learner within the age group, because no two children, no two teenagers, and no two adults are exactly alike. The last two sections turn to the teachable moment, the place where readiness meets opportunity, and to the example of a teacher who saw a teachable moment and ran toward it.

Mwanafunzi si tatizo la kudhibitiwa. Mwanafunzi ni mtu wa kupendwa.A learner is not a problem to be managed. A learner is a person to be loved.

Christian Education that does not begin with the learner ends with the curriculum. Christian Education that begins with the learner ends with a changed life.

What follows is a broad teaching heuristic, not a rigid scientific classification: real children, youth, and adults vary widely, and any individual learner may not fit the pattern described. Used as a starting point for how a teacher might approach each age, though, the pattern holds true often enough to be worth knowing.

I. Watoto: Wanafunzi WanaoigaI. The Children: The Imitative Learners

Children from infancy through about age twelve are imitative learners. They learn by watching, copying, and asking. Their thinking is largely concrete — they understand a story before they understand a doctrine, a person before a principle. They trust deeply, they memorize easily, and they believe what is told to them by adults whom they trust. The Christian Education teacher of children stands in a sacred place, because that trust is being placed in the teacher and, through the teacher, in the Word the teacher carries.

Mungu hajawahi kuogopa kufanya kazi kupitia watoto. Ilihitajika miito mitatu kabla Eli mzee hajatambua kilichokuwa kikitendeka. Ndipo Eli akamwambia Samweli amjibu BWANA: "Nena, BWANA; kwa kuwa mtumishi wako anasikia" (1 Samweli 3:9). Naye BWANA akamwambia mtoto mdogo kile ambacho hangemwambia kuhani mzee.God has never been afraid of working through children. The most famous example in the Old Testament is Samuel. The boy was so young that when the LORD called him in the night, Samuel ran to Eli and said, "Here am I; for thou calledst me" (1 Samuel 3:5). It took three calls before old Eli realized what was happening. Then Eli told Samuel to answer the LORD: "Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth" (1 Samuel 3:9). And the LORD spoke to a little boy what he would not speak to the old priest.

Huyo ndiye Mungu wa namna tunayemtumikia. Huwaita watoto. That is the kind of God we serve. He calls children. He speaks to them in language they understand. He uses their honest answers and their unlearned trust. The Christian Education teacher of children is in the line of Eli — teaching the child how to listen, then stepping out of the way so the LORD can do his own speaking.

Mtoto atajifunza jinsi mwalimu alivyo muda mrefu kabla hajajifunza kile mwalimu anachosema. What does the imitative learner need from the teacher? Concrete examples, not abstractions. Stories that have a hero and a villain and a lesson. Repetition, because the child's memory is fresh but unformed. Patience with questions, because the child is forming categories that will hold theology for the rest of his life. And modeling, because the child is watching the teacher more than he is listening to the teacher. The child will learn what the teacher is long before he learns what the teacher says.

II. Vijana: Wanafunzi Wenye Maono BoraII. The Youth: The Idealistic Learners

Kijana sasa anaweza kuuliza maswali ambayo mtoto asingeweza kuyaunda: Kwa nini kuna uovu? From about age twelve through the early twenties, the learner enters a new country. The concrete thinking of childhood gives way to abstract thinking. Theology becomes possible because justice becomes possible because truth itself becomes a category in the mind. The young learner can now ask questions that the child could not have framed: Why is there evil? Why does God allow this? What if the Bible is wrong? What is my purpose? These are not signs of rebellion. They are signs of a mind that has just become large enough to hold the questions.

Kijana pia ana maono bora. Anauona ulimwengu kwa rangi kali za maadili. Bado hajachoka wala hajakata tamaa. The youth is also idealistic. He sees the world in sharp moral colors. He has not yet become tired or cynical. He wants to give his life for something that matters. He is, in many ways, the most dangerous Christian and the most evangelizable Christian on the planet. The Devil knows it. The Lord knows it. The Christian Education teacher needs to know it.

Paul saw this in Timothy. He left a young man in charge of a major church — a young man so young that the older members were tempted to ignore him. Paul wrote, "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity" (1 Timothy 4:12). Notice what Paul did not say. He did not say, "Wait until you are older." He did not say, "Defer to your elders on every question." He told a young man to be the example. The youth was capable of leading because the youth was already mighty in the things of God.

What does the idealistic learner need from the teacher? Honest answers to honest questions, even hard ones. Doctrine that holds together under pressure, because youth will pressure-test it. Examples of believers who have given their lives for the cause — missionary biography and testimony have lit real fires under generations of young believers, William Carey among them, who traced his own missionary call in part to reading an explorer's journal as a young pastor. And a teacher who will treat the young learner as a future leader, not as a present problem. Dismiss the young, and you lose the next generation. Disciple the young, and you light a fuse that will burn for fifty years.

III. Watu Wazima: Wanafunzi Wanaotumia WanachojifunzaIII. The Adults: The Applied Learners

Mwanafunzi mtu mzima anaingia darasani akiwa na kitu ambacho mtoto na kijana bado hawana: maisha. Ameumizwa. Amevunjwa moyo. Amefiwa na watu. Amefanya maamuzi ambayo angetamani kuyabatilisha. The adult learner walks into the classroom with something the child and the youth do not yet have: a life. He has been hurt. He has been disappointed. He has lost people. He has made decisions he wishes he could unmake. He has years of work behind him and, if he is honest, fewer years ahead than behind. He sits down with his Bible and his coffee, and he asks one question more often than any other: "What does this have to do with my Monday?"

The adult is the applied learner. He does not need motivation; he is already motivated, or he would not be in the classroom. He does not need entertainment; he has the news, the sports, and the family for that. He needs the Word brought into contact with the actual problems on his desk this week. He needs theology that can be used. He needs application that does not insult his intelligence, and intelligence that does not omit application.

Apolo aliyapokea. Akaendelea kuwa mmoja wa walimu wenye matokeo makubwa zaidi katika kanisa la kwanza, akitajwa na Paulo kama mshirika katika kazi (1 Wakorintho 3:6).Acts 18 gives us a beautiful picture of one adult learning from two other adults. Apollos was an Alexandrian Jew, "an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures" (Acts 18:24). He was already a teacher. He was teaching the things of the Lord. But he "knew only the baptism of John" (Acts 18:25). His doctrine was incomplete. Two adults in the synagogue that day, Aquila and Priscilla, recognized the gap. They did not stand up in public and embarrass him. They "took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly" (Acts 18:26). Apollos received it. He went on to become one of the most effective teachers in the early church, mentioned by Paul as a partner in the work (1 Corinthians 3:6).

Notice the lesson for the Christian Education teacher. The adult learner is rarely starting from zero. He has knowledge, conviction, and history. The teacher's job is not always to fill an empty cup. Sometimes it is to clarify a partial cup. Sometimes it is to take a brother aside, in privacy and respect, and expound the way of God more perfectly. The adult who is treated like a child will leave the classroom. The adult who is treated like a colleague in the faith will keep coming back for fifty years.

IV. Mtu Mmoja Mmoja Ndani ya KundiIV. The Individual Within the Group

Three age categories are useful, but they are not the whole truth. Within any age category, no two learners are alike. One six-year-old listens with his whole body; another six-year-old at the same table is dreaming about lunch. One teenager devours every word; another teenager at the same row is calculating how soon she can leave without offending her grandmother. One adult comes hungry every Sunday; another adult sits down with arms folded and dares the teacher to feed him. The teacher who treats them all the same is teaching nobody well.

Wanafunzi tofauti hujifunza kwa njia tofauti. Wengine hupokea kweli kupitia macho — picha, chati, muhtasari ulioandikwa.

Different learners learn differently. Some take in truth through the eyes — pictures, charts, written outlines. Some take it in through the ears — stories, songs, the rhythm of a familiar voice. Some take it in through the hands and feet — doing, building, acting it out, going somewhere. Some take it in alone, in silence, on a long walk afterward. Some take it in best in conversation, by talking the lesson through with another believer. The teacher who knows his learners varies the menu so that every kind of hunger is fed.

CTS Editorial Note (2026): These are useful teaching methods, not fixed categories into which each learner must be placed. Vary methods because the subject matter, language, accessibility, and students’ needs differ; check what learners understand rather than assuming they have one permanent “learning style.”

Hakubadilisha ujumbe. Hakubadilisha Injili. Alibadilisha jinsi alivyoubeba, ili uweze kutua pale ambapo mwanafunzi tayari aliishi. The apostle Paul understood this so deeply that he made it the rule of his ministry. "Unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law... To them that are without law, as without law... To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some" (1 Corinthians 9:20–22). The greatest teacher of the early church changed his approach for every learner he met. He did not change the message. He did not change the gospel. He changed the way he carried it, so that it could land where the learner already lived.

The Christian Education teacher does the same. The lesson is fixed; the Bible does not change. The learners are not fixed; every classroom is a different mission field. The teacher who refuses to study his learners will deliver a perfect lesson into an empty room.

V. Wakati Unaofaa wa Kufundisha: Nyakati Nne za Kumbukumbu la Torati 6V. The Teachable Moment: The Four Whens of Deuteronomy 6

The most important verse in the Old Testament about Christian Education is Deuteronomy 6:7. It contains the entire philosophy of how the Word of God is passed from one generation to the next. Listen to it carefully: "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up."

Angalia kile ambacho Mungu HAKUSEMA. Notice what God did NOT say. He did not say, "Send your children to a special religious class on the seventh day, and consider yourself finished." He named four whens, four moments distributed throughout daily life: when you sit at home, when you walk on the road, when you lie down at night, when you get up in the morning. The whole day is a teaching field. Every part of the family's routine is a potential teachable moment.

Zote lazima zitambuliwe. This is what we mean by the teachable moment. It is the place where readiness meets opportunity. The Sunday school teacher schedules a lesson for forty-five minutes a week. The teachable moment is the fifteen seconds a parent has when the four-year-old looks up at the sky and asks, "Where is heaven?" The teachable moment is the ten minutes a youth pastor has when a teenager stays after the meeting to ask a question he could not ask in front of his friends. The teachable moment is the half hour an older saint has with a young couple at a kitchen table after a funeral. None of these moments can be scheduled. All of them must be recognized.

A teachable moment cannot be planned. It can only be prepared for and seized.

The teacher who does not know his learners will miss every teachable moment. He will be teaching the lesson plan when the lesson should have been the question. The teacher who knows his learners is alert. He hears the catch in the voice. He sees the troubled eyes. He notices when a question is being asked underneath another question. He drops the lesson plan when the moment requires it, and he picks up the lesson plan again later. The lesson plan is the tool; the teachable moment is the work.

VI. Kuukamata Wakati: Filipo Katika Njia ya GazaVI. Seizing the Moment: Philip on the Gaza Road

Filipo akaenda. The classic teachable moment in the New Testament is Acts 8. Philip the deacon had been preaching in Samaria with great success when an angel said to him, "Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert" (Acts 8:26). Philip went. There he saw a chariot, and inside the chariot a high official of Ethiopia — the treasurer of Queen Candace — reading a scroll.

Roho akamwambia Filipo, "Sogea, ukashikamane na gari hili" (Matendo 8:29). Filipo "akapiga mbio" kumwendea. Hakutembea taratibu. Hakusimama kufikiria mpango wake wa somo. Alikimbia. Naye alipokuwa akikimbia kando ya gari, alimsikia mtu yule akisoma kwa sauti — kutoka Isaya 53. Ndipo Filipo akauliza swali kamili la mwalimu: "Je! Yamekuelea haya unayosoma?" (Matendo 8:30).The Spirit said to Philip, "Go near, and join thyself to this chariot" (Acts 8:29). Philip "ran thither to him". He did not stroll. He did not pause to think about his lesson plan. He ran. And as he ran alongside the chariot, he heard the man reading aloud — from Isaiah 53. Then Philip asked the perfect teacher's question: "Understandest thou what thou readest?" (Acts 8:30).

Mkushi yule akajibu, "Nitawezaje kuelewa, mtu asiponiongoza?" (Matendo 8:31). Akamkaribisha Filipo gharini. Akaionyesha aya aliyokuwa akiisoma. The Ethiopian answered, "How can I, except some man should guide me?" (Acts 8:31). He invited Philip into the chariot. He pointed to the verse he was reading. And then comes one of the most beautiful sentences in the New Testament: "Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus" (Acts 8:35). Philip did not pull out a fresh passage. He did not redirect to his favorite proof-text. He began at the same scripture — the verse the learner was already reading — and from there he preached unto him Jesus. Within the hour, the Ethiopian was baptized in a roadside pool of water.

Filipo alikuwa mahali alipoambiwa awe (maandalizi). Aliutambua wakati alipomwona mtu akisoma Maandiko (kuwa macho). Alienda haraka (bidii ya haraka). Aliuliza swali badala ya kuanza hotuba (kumjua mwanafunzi). Alianzia pale mwanafunzi alipokuwa tayari akisoma (kumkuta mwanafunzi). Look at all the teachable moment principles in that one story. Philip was where he had been told to be (preparation). He recognized the moment when he saw a man reading Scripture (alertness). He moved fast (urgency). He asked a question rather than launching into a lecture (knowing the learner). He started where the learner was already reading (meeting the student). He led the conversation from the learner's question to Jesus (purpose). And he was ready to act on the result the same day (follow-through). One conversation. One soul. One unforgettable picture of how a teachable moment is recognized, seized, and crowned with eternal fruit.

Hakuna hata mmoja ulio mtakatifu kidogo. The Christian Education teacher who walks out of the classroom this Sunday with eyes open will pass through three or four such moments before he reaches his car. Most of them are smaller than the Ethiopian's. None of them are less holy.

Hitimisho: Mpanzi na UdongoClosing: The Sower and the Soil

Neno lile lile. Mwalimu yule yule. Wanafunzi tofauti. Mavuno tofauti.Jesus's most famous parable about teaching is the parable of the sower (Matthew 13). The same seed lands on four different soils — the wayside, the stony places, the thorny ground, and the good ground — and produces four different results. Same Word. Same teacher. Different learners. Different harvest.

Mwalimu hawezi kuufanya udongo. The teacher cannot make the soil. The teacher can only sow the seed faithfully. But the teacher who knows his learners has at least begun to recognize the soil. He knows which child is the wayside, where the seed is taken away by the next distraction. He knows which youth is the stony ground, all enthusiasm but shallow root. He knows which adult is the thorny ground, where the cares of this world choke the Word. And he knows which one of all of them is the good ground, the one in whom the seed will produce thirty, sixty, a hundredfold.

Huyo wa mwisho ndiye sababu tunaendelea kufundisha, hata wakati sehemu kubwa ya mbegu inaonekana kuanguka vibaya. Udongo mzuri upo daima. That last one is why we keep teaching, even when most of the seed seems to fall poorly. The good ground is always there. The teacher who keeps sowing will, sooner or later, sow into that good ground. And the harvest from one Timothy, one Apollos, one Ethiopian eunuch, one little Samuel, will more than justify a lifetime of sowing.

In Unit 5 we will turn from the learners to the place where the learning happens: the learning environment. A skilled teacher and a willing learner can still be defeated by a poor environment. We will look at how to prepare the room, the schedule, and the atmosphere so that the seed has every advantage when it lands.
