Tunachohifadhi.

Andi turns from the lesson plan to the methods that fill it. The same lesson plan, carried by the right method for the right point, becomes a lesson the learner remembers for life.

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver."
— Mithali 25:11 (SUV)Unit Scripture: "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver." — Proverbs 25:11 (NKJV)

Utangulizi: Neno Sahihi, katika Chombo SahihiOrientation: The Right Word, in the Right Setting

Solomon's image is one of the loveliest in the Old Testament. A word fitly spoken is a golden apple resting in a silver bowl. The fruit is the truth itself. The bowl is the form in which the truth is delivered. Without the bowl, the apple still has its color and its sweetness, but no setting to display it. Without the apple, the bowl is only an empty container. The two are made to fit each other, and a word that fits its setting is twice as memorable as a word that does not.

This unit is about the silver setting. We have already settled what the apple is — the aim of Unit 6, the lesson the teacher prepared with prayer and care. Now we ask the second question: How will I deliver this lesson? The answer is called method, and though the biblical teachers who follow were not consciously choosing among modern pedagogical categories, their examples can be examined through that lens with real profit — some lessons are best carried by lecture, some by discussion, some by story, some by question, some by demonstration. The teacher who has only one method is like a carpenter with only a hammer. Everything starts to look like a nail.

A teacher with only one method is a carpenter with only a hammer.

Vifungu sita vinafuata. Six sections follow. Section I asks why methods matter at all. Sections II through V each take one modern method and examine a biblical teacher through that lens: Stephen's lecture, the Emmaus discussion, Nathan's story, the Caesarea Philippi question. Section VI brings the methods back together and asks how the teacher chooses among them. The next unit will continue with three more methods — question and answer, case study, and experiential study — that build on what is learned here.

I. Kwa Nini Mbinu Zina UmuhimuI. Why Methods Matter

Some teachers say method does not matter, that only the message matters. They are half right. The message matters most. But a true message poorly delivered will not be received, and the teacher who claims that method is unimportant is usually a teacher whose only method is failing the learners.

Sababu tatu zinaifanya mbinu kuwa na umuhimu. Kwanza, masomo tofauti yanahitaji mbinu tofauti. Pili, wanafunzi tofauti hupokea ukweli kupitia milango tofauti. Wengine huupokea kwa kusikia, wengine kwa kuona, wengine kwa kutenda. Mwalimu asiyebadilisha mbinu kamwe huifunga milango mingi wakati mwingi. Tatu, utofauti hushikilia usikivu. Three reasons make method matter. First, different lessons need different methods. The doctrine of the Trinity is not taught the same way as the story of David and Goliath. A historical book is taught one way; a parable is taught another; a Pauline argument is taught a third. To teach all three the same way is to flatten the variety God himself wrote into the Bible. Second, different learners receive truth through different doors. Some take it in by hearing, some by seeing, some by doing. The teacher who never varies the method shuts most of the doors most of the time. Third, variety holds attention. Even the most willing learner cannot listen to forty straight minutes of one tone of voice in one posture without his mind beginning to wander. The teacher who shifts methods every ten or fifteen minutes is not entertaining; he is teaching the way the human attention span actually works.

Mwalimu Mkuu alilijua hili. The Master Teacher knew this. The Sermon on the Mount is a lecture. The parable of the sower is a story. The conversation with the rich young ruler is a question. The washing of feet is a demonstration. The visit to the sisters at Bethany is a discussion. Jesus did not have a method; he had a tool kit. He picked up whichever tool fit the work in front of him, did the work with that tool, and laid the tool down when the work was finished.

The Christian Education teacher learns the same thing slowly, over years. The first year, every lesson is taught the same way. The fifth year, the teacher has learned three methods. The fifteenth year, the teacher has learned to choose. That last skill is the one this unit is trying to begin in the new teacher and refine in the older one.

II. Hotuba: Stefano Mbele ya BarazaII. The Lecture: Stephen Before the Council

The lecture is the oldest and most criticized method in Christian Education. Done badly, it is the worst method in the world: a teacher droning into the air while the learners count ceiling tiles. Done well, it is one of the most powerful methods ever used. Stephen's defense in Acts 7 is the longest single speech in the book of Acts, and it is a textbook lecture from beginning to end.

Mahali palikuwa Baraza (Sanhedrini). The setting was the Sanhedrin. Stephen had been arrested on false charges. The high priest gave him the chance to answer, and Stephen took it. He began with Abraham's call from Ur (Acts 7:2). He moved to Joseph in Egypt (Acts 7:9). He told of Moses and the burning bush (Acts 7:30). He named the wilderness, the tabernacle, David, Solomon's temple. He preached the entire history of Israel as a single argument: God has always sent deliverers; Israel has always rejected them. By verse 51 he had laid the trap. By verse 52 he sprung it: "Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers" (Acts 7:52). The lecture had carried the listeners from Mesopotamia to the cross, and it had done so without a single interruption.

Notice what made Stephen's lecture work. It had a clear thesis — one main argument that every other detail served. It was deeply rooted in Scripture — nearly every sentence echoed an Old Testament text the audience knew by heart. It moved chronologically, so the audience could not get lost. It built toward a point, instead of merely listing facts. And it ended with an application so sharp the listeners could not avoid it. They killed Stephen rather than answer the lecture, which is the highest backhanded compliment a lecture can receive: it had reached them.

The Christian Education teacher who would lecture should learn from Stephen. Pick one thesis. Build it from Scripture. Move it forward instead of letting it loop. Land it on the listener's life. A lecture done that way will outwork three discussions. A lecture done any other way will outlast every learner's patience.

III. Majadiliano: Njia ya Kwenda EmauIII. The Discussion: The Road to Emmaus

If the lecture is teaching by speaking, the discussion is teaching by listening. The model is Luke 24, the road to Emmaus on the afternoon of resurrection day. Two disciples were walking the seven miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus, talking through the events of the past three days. The risen Jesus joined them on the road. They did not recognize him. And what Jesus did next is one of the most beautiful pictures of teaching by discussion in any book.

Hakuanza na hotuba. Hakusema, "Ketini chini, ninyi wawili, mnisikilize nikieleza kilichotokea sasa hivi." Aliuliza swali: "Ni maneno gani haya mnayosemezana hivi mnapotembea, mkiwa na huzuni?" (Luka 24:17). Aliwakaribisha wazungumze. Wakazungumza. He did not begin with a speech. He did not say, "Sit down, both of you, and listen to me explain what just happened." He asked a question: "What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?" (Luke 24:17). He invited them to talk. They talked. They told him about Jesus of Nazareth, a prophet mighty in deed and word, condemned and crucified, and how on this very morning some women had reported the tomb empty. They emptied themselves of their disappointment, their hope, their confusion, and their grief, all in the hearing of the very Person they were grieving.

Only after they had spoken did Jesus speak. "Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?" (Luke 24:25–26). Then, beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself (Luke 24:27). Notice the sequence. He let them speak first. He let them feel the weight of their own confusion. Only then did he answer with the Word, and his answer landed on hearts that had been opened by the very act of speaking aloud what was in them.

Hayo ndiyo mafundisho kwa njia ya majadiliano. Mwalimu haachi nafasi yake; majadiliano si vurugu ambamo kila maoni yana uzito sawa. Mwalimu huongoza. Mwalimu huuliza. Mwalimu husubiri.

That is teaching by discussion. The teacher does not abdicate his role; the discussion is not a free-for-all in which every opinion has equal weight. The teacher guides. The teacher questions. The teacher waits. And when the right moment comes, the teacher speaks, with the authority of one who has listened. The disciples on the Emmaus road said it best: "Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?" (Luke 24:32). A heart that has spoken is a heart ready to burn.

CTS Editorial Note (2026): A discussion is not successful simply because several confident people speak. Give learners a moment to think, invite different voices, and make room for those working in a second language without embarrassing anyone who chooses not to speak. Distinguish what Scripture explicitly says from an interpretation or customary application. When opinions differ, ask which claims the passage itself supports. The teacher guides discussion toward biblical understanding while modeling patience, courtesy, and a willingness to correct mistaken assumptions.

IV. Hadithi: Mfano wa Nathani kwa DaudiIV. The Story: Nathan's Parable to David

Some lessons cannot be taught by lecture or discussion. They have to be carried in by a story, sneaking past the defenses of a learner who would never accept the truth in any direct form. The classic Old Testament example is 2 Samuel 12, the prophet Nathan delivering a hammer blow to King David in the form of the gentlest possible parable.

Alidhani hakuna aliyejua. BWANA alijua, naye BWANA akamtuma Nathani. David had committed adultery with Bathsheba and arranged the murder of her husband Uriah to cover the sin. He thought no one knew. The LORD knew, and the LORD sent Nathan. Imagine the prophet's challenge. He had to confront the most powerful man in Israel about a sin the man had been hiding for nearly a year. A direct accusation might have ended in Nathan's death. So Nathan did not begin with an accusation. He began with a story: "There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor" (2 Samuel 12:1). The rich man had many flocks. The poor man had only one little ewe lamb, which lay in his bosom and ate of his own meat and drank of his own cup. When a traveler came to the rich man, the rich man took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for his guest.

Daudi hakubishana. Hakuweza. Alisema, "Nimemfanyia BWANA dhambi" (2 Samweli 12:13).David's anger was kindled. He swore by the LORD that the rich man should die, and should restore fourfold for the lamb. He had walked into the parable, agreed with its judgment, even named the penalty — without realizing that the parable was about him. Then Nathan spoke the four words that probably lived in David's memory for the rest of his days: "Thou art the man" (2 Samuel 12:7). The story had carried David past every defense and set him directly under the judgment of his own mouth. David did not argue. He could not. He said, "I have sinned against the LORD" (2 Samuel 12:13).

That is the power of story as a teaching method. A story bypasses the listener's resistance because the listener does not know to defend himself yet. He enters the world of the story as a spectator, not as the accused. Only when the parable lands does he discover that he was not just watching a story; he was inside one. Jesus's parables work the same way. The Christian Education teacher who has a hard truth to deliver should not always announce it. Sometimes he should hand the learner a lamb, and let the LORD do the rest.

V. Swali: Huko Kaisaria FilipiV. The Question: At Caesarea Philippi

Yesu akawageukia akawauliza, "Watu hunena kuwa mimi ni nani?"The most powerful method in any teacher's tool kit is the well-crafted question. The single most important question Jesus ever asked his disciples was put to them at Caesarea Philippi. Mark records the moment in three short verses (Mark 8:27–29). They were on the road in the north, far from the religious authorities. Jesus turned to them and asked, "Whom do men say that I am?"

Angalia hekima ya kuanzia hapo. Hakuuliza kwanza Ninyi mnaamini nini? Walikuwa wamechangamka.Notice the brilliance of starting there. He did not first ask What do you believe? That would have put the disciples on the defensive. He asked first about other people. The disciples could speak freely about what they had heard in the marketplace. They answered: "Some say that thou art John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets" (Mark 8:28). They had reported the public opinion. They had warmed up.

Then Jesus asked the second question, the only one that mattered. "But whom say ye that I am?" (Mark 8:29). Six words. Personal pronoun. Direct. Inescapable. After all the answers about other people's opinions, he turned the same question on his own disciples and demanded their own answer. Peter rose and gave the confession that has anchored the church ever since: "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Notice that Jesus did not give them the answer. He drew the answer out of them. The answer was now theirs in a way it never could have been if he had simply announced it.

Kwanza uliza watu wengine wanafikiri nini; kisha uliza mwanafunzi anafikiri nini. Kwanza uliza juu ya juujuu; kisha uliza juu ya kina. Kwanza uliza mstari unasema nini; kisha uliza mstari una maana gani kwangu. Kila swali ni mlango mdogo, na mwalimu aliyelitunga swali vizuri amejenga mlango ambao mwanafunzi anaweza kuupitia. Mwalimu anayejaribu kumsukuma mwanafunzi kupitia milango iliyofungwa atafanikiwa tu kumsukuma mwanafunzi mbali. The Christian Education teacher who learns to ask in this two-step pattern has gained one of the most useful instruments in the kit. First ask what other people think; then ask what the learner thinks. First ask about the surface; then ask about the depth. First ask what the verse says; then ask what the verse means for me. Each question is a small door, and the teacher who has crafted the question well has built a door the learner can walk through. The teacher who tries to push the learner through closed doors will succeed only in pushing the learner away.

VI. Kuchagua MbinuVI. Choosing the Method

The teacher who has more than one method in the kit must learn to choose. The choice is not random, and it is not made by the teacher's mood. The choice is shaped by three factors: the lesson, the learner, and the moment.

Somo ndilo linaloathiri uchaguzi kwanza. The lesson shapes the choice first. Doctrinal exposition usually works best as a lecture, because the truth needs to be stated cleanly and built systematically. A passage of Old Testament history works well as a story, because the form of the original text is itself a story. A passage that confronts the listener directly with sin or duty works well as discussion or question, because direct preaching often only produces resistance. A passage about how to do something works well as a demonstration. Match the form of the teaching to the form of the text, and the lesson teaches itself.

Mwanafunzi ndiye anayeathiri uchaguzi pili. The learner shapes the choice second. The same passage in Romans 12 can be taught to teenagers as a discussion (because they want to talk) and to senior saints as a lecture (because they want to receive). Children learn from stories before they learn from doctrine. New believers learn from question and answer before they learn from systematic exposition. Old believers can sit through deeper lectures than the teacher of a beginner ever could. Know the learner in front of you; the method that fits one age may fail another.

Wakati ndio unaoathiri uchaguzi mwisho. The moment shapes the choice last. Even within a single lesson, different moments call for different methods. The opening of the lesson is usually best with a question or a story, to gather the learners. The body often works best with a lecture or a guided discussion, to develop the truth. The closing usually works best with a question or a personal challenge, to push the learner to a decision. Within forty minutes the teacher may use three methods, each for a few minutes, each fit to the moment.

The teacher who matches lesson, learner, and moment is doing the work of Proverbs 25:11. The fruit is the truth; the bowl is the method; the apple of gold rests in pictures of silver. A word fitly spoken — with the right method, to the right learner, at the right moment — is one of the most beautiful sights in any classroom on earth.

Hitimisho: Sanduku la Zana, Si NyundoClosing: A Tool Kit, Not a Hammer

The Christian Education teacher who finishes this unit ought to leave with one settled conviction: there is no single best method for every lesson, every learner, or every moment. There is only the right method for the lesson at hand, and the teacher's lifelong task is to recognize which method that is.

Stefano alitoa hotuba. Yesu alijadiliana njiani kwenda Emau. Nathani alisimulia hadithi. Yesu aliuliza maswali huko Kaisaria Filipi. Stephen lectured. Jesus discussed on the Emmaus road. Nathan told a story. Jesus questioned at Caesarea Philippi. Each of those teachers chose his method by the lesson he was teaching, the learners he was teaching, and the moment in which he was teaching. None of them used the same method every day. None of them used the wrong method for the moment. The teacher who imitates them in this matter will become, slowly and surely, a teacher whose lessons are remembered for life.

Method is not the message. Method is the bowl that carries the apple. The teacher who has one bowl is offering whatever fruit he has in only one form. The teacher who has many bowls is doing the work of Solomon's proverb — setting a word fitly spoken in pictures of silver, so that the apple of gold can be seen and tasted by every learner who passes by.

In Unit 8 we will continue with three more methods that build on these: the question and answer in detail, the case study, and the experiential study. Each is a method the church has used for two thousand years, and each opens a door that the methods of this unit cannot quite open by themselves. The kit grows larger; the teacher grows wiser; the lesson reaches farther.

Certificate of Ministry: 20 multiple-choice questions, 90% (18 of 20) to pass. Master of Theology & Master of Divinity: 20 MC + 10 short-answer, both at 90% independently. Each MC scores immediately when you click. MC must be passed before SA scores count. A failure locks the relevant section for 15 minutes; if you have already passed MC, only SA locks after an SA fail.
