Tunachohifadhi.
Sasa tumefika kwenye sehemu ambayo kozi nzima imekuwa ikiielekea. We come now to the unit the whole course has been leaning toward. We have spoken of gathering people — through worship, through the screen, through the small group — but gathering was never the goal. The Lord did not commission us to make decisions, to fill rooms, or to produce casual believers and church attenders. He commissioned us to make disciples (Matthew 28:19). That one word governs everything. A church may gather a great crowd and still fail its commission utterly, if the crowd never becomes disciples. And here, in truth, is the root of the dechurching we have traced: we became expert at gathering attenders and never made them disciples, and an attender, untaught and unrooted, drifts away at the first change of weather. The cure for the open back door is not a better front door. It is discipleship.
So we must learn from the Master Discipler Himself.
Jinsi Yesu alivyofanya wanafunzi. How Jesus made disciples. The first thing to see is the most easily missed: He called the Twelve, Mark says, that they might be with Him (Mark 3:14). Before they were sent, before they preached or healed, they were simply with Him. Discipleship began not with a curriculum but with a Presence — three years of shared road and shared table, of watching how He prayed and how He treated a leper and how He answered a trap. We have too often reduced discipleship to a class and a workbook; He made it a life lived alongside a life.
Hakuwapa hitimisho; alivuta kweli kutoka ndani yao. Na alifundisha kwa kutuma: aliwaonyesha, kisha akawatuma wawili wawili wafanye wenyewe, kisha akawakusanya tena ili kutafakari kilichotokea. Onyesha, tuma, tathmini pamoja — hivyo ndivyo ujuzi unavyokuwa maisha.See, too, that He went deep rather than wide. He preached to thousands, but He poured Himself into twelve, and within the twelve into three. He was building not an audience but a nucleus, knowing that a few thoroughly formed would outlast a multitude lightly touched. He taught in the teachable moment — a coin, a fig tree, a child set in the midst — and He taught by question as much as by lecture: “Who do you say that I am?” He did not hand them conclusions; He drew the truth up out of them. And He taught by sending: He showed them, then sent them out two by two to do it themselves, then gathered them back to reckon with what had happened. Show, send, debrief — that is how a skill becomes a life.
And He never hid the cost. “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Luke 9:23). There was nothing casual in His call; He spoke of a yoke, a cross, a narrow gate, and He let the crowds thin when the saying grew hard. The aim of it all was transformation — “a disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40) — Christ formed in a person until the life begins to resemble the One who made it. And then, the last move and the whole point: He made disciples who would make disciples. “Go and make disciples,” He said, and the chain has run unbroken ever since — what He poured into twelve, they poured into others, who taught others still (2 Timothy 2:2). Discipleship that does not reproduce is not yet finished discipleship.
The most effective way to do it. A student may grant all of this and still ask the honest question: so what do I actually do Monday morning? The answer, by both the example of the Master and the witness of our own day, is simpler than our programs have led us to believe. The most effective discipleship is relational, and it reproduces. It is not first a class, a curriculum, or a screen; it is one maturing believer walking life beside a few others, with the open intention that those few will soon go and do the same. A life beside a life — that is the method that outperforms all the rest.
The proven shape is a small, reproducing group — not merely one-on-one, but three or four together. Larger than a pair, so it does not collapse when one person is away and so it already feels like a little body; small enough that no one can hide. Such a group runs on four plain engines. The Word, read and obeyed together. Accountability honest enough to ask, “How is it really with your soul?” Prayer, for and with one another. And multiplication — the settled expectation that within a year or two each person will start a group of his own. That fourth engine is the one we always omit and the one that changes everything; without it a group becomes a cozy huddle that warms a few and reaches no one. With it, the chain runs on as the Lord designed: He poured into the Twelve, who poured into others, who taught others still. “What you have heard from me… entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2) — four generations of disciples in a single verse.
Hawakuwa wakifanywa. Wanafunzi hufanywa jinsi ambavyo wamekuwa wakifanywa siku zote, jinsi Bwana alivyowafanya mara ya kwanza: tafuta wachache, tembea nao, na uwatume wakatafute wachache wao wenyewe.Hear clearly what this does and does not say. The classes, the foundations course, the online teaching, the Sunday sermon — these are good and useful, but they are scaffolding, not the building. They feed the relationship; they cannot replace it. The great mistake of the last generation was to mistake the scaffolding for the house — to run the classes and fill the rooms and assume that disciples were being made. They were not. Disciples are made the way they have always been made, the way the Lord first made them: find a few, walk with them, and send them to find a few of their own.
Puuza mmojawapo naye hatasimama.Grounding a believer in the faith and into a church. Bring that down to the new believer in your own congregation, the one who has just trusted Christ — and who will, statistically, drift away within a year or two unless something holds him. Our task is to ground him, and the word has two directions. He must be rooted in the faith — the vertical — and rooted into the church — the horizontal. Neglect either and he will not stand.
Rooted in the faith means he is no longer left to fend for himself the moment he believes. He is given the next step, and then the next: the Scriptures, until a man who may never have owned a Bible learns to find his way through it and feed himself; prayer, taught and modeled until it becomes his own; the basic doctrines, so his faith has bones and not only feelings; and the long, patient disciplines that, as the old word has it, form a soul into the likeness of Christ rather than merely informing a mind about Him. Best of all, and most like the Master, this happens not chiefly in a classroom but in a relationship — one older believer walking life beside one younger, the with-Him principle carried on in us.
Rooted into the church means he is brought into the body until he genuinely belongs — and here, by God’s design, the very machinery of this course becomes the machinery of discipleship. He needs friends, and not a few; he needs to be missed when he is absent and reached when he slips; he needs a small circle where life is actually shared; he needs a task, a place to use his gift so that he knows he is not a spectator but a member with work to do. We will say in the next unit that a new member who does not quickly make friends and find a role will leave — and that is simply discipleship described from the back door. Membership, rightly understood, is not consumer access to religious goods; it is covenant, a joining of oneself to a people. The same enrolling, missing, contacting, gift-deploying labor that grows a church is exactly what roots a disciple — which is why discipleship is not one program among the church’s many, but the thread running through them all.
So weigh the two side by side, the casual believer and the disciple, for the difference is the difference between a church that leaks and a church that holds. The casual believer consumes — he attends when convenient, watches the screen, takes what he likes, and drifts when life shifts, and no one is the wiser. The disciple is formed, belongs, serves, and reproduces — he is known and knows others, he has a place and a task, he is being slowly changed into the image of Christ, and in time he becomes the one walking beside the next new believer. The first is the open back door we keep trying to close with better programs. The second is the door closed, from the inside, by love.
This is the unit toward which the whole course has been moving, and it can be said in a single line. The goal of church growth was never the crowd. It was the disciple. Make disciples — not casual believers, not mere attenders — and the crowd, the health, and the staying power will follow; aim at the crowd alone, and you will lose even that.
Tulipo Sasa (2026)Where We Are Now (2026)
If there is one word the whole movement has circled back to in these last years, it is this one. After a long season of counting decisions and attendance, the church has been driven — by the dechurching, by its own hard self-examination — to remember that the Commission said make disciples, and that we had been making something else. The recovery of discipleship and spiritual formation is the most hopeful turn of our moment, and it is, at bottom, a return to the very thing the Master did at the beginning.
The tools have multiplied, and rightly used they are a gift: a church can now track every new believer’s next step so that no one quietly falls through; it can carry teaching to a phone in a pocket; it can connect a mentor and a young believer across any distance. But here the warning of the digital unit returns with full force. Information is not formation. A library of online teaching can fill a head while leaving a life untouched and a soul un-companioned, and a disciple has never yet been mass-produced through a screen. The screen can deliver the content; it cannot be the community, and it was always in the community — with Him, and with one another — that disciples were made. Use every new tool to serve the ancient pattern; never imagine the tool can replace it.
For the pattern itself has not aged a day. A new generation, weary of spectacle and hungry for what is real, is quietly asking for exactly what Jesus offered the Twelve: not a better production, but a Presence; not more content, but a life to walk beside. The church that will grow and hold in this dechurching age is not the one with the brightest stage or the largest screen. It is the one that does the slow, unglamorous, deeply personal work the Master did on the roads of Galilee — being with people, and forming them, one life beside another, into disciples who will go and do the same.
