Tunachohifadhi.
Meli bado inazama.Take a plateaued or declining church, and almost always you will find a leadership whose spiritual fire has gone out. This is where renewal must begin — not with a new program, but with the rekindling of the leaders themselves. Unless those who lead possess real spiritual vitality, everything else they attempt is, in the memorable phrase, like rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking ship. The activity may look industrious. The ship still goes down.
If there is a single key ingredient in a growing church, it is the vision of the pastor. Not his cleverness, not his program, not his personality — his vision: the God-given ability to see what a church could become, and to call the people toward it. Where that vision is absent, a church drifts, however busy it may be. Many churches do not grow for the plainest of reasons — no one has set before them any compelling picture of what they are growing toward, and so there is nothing to grow toward at all.
This is why some churches that have plateaued or even declined suddenly begin to grow again. They are sometimes called breakout churches, and the pattern behind them is striking: nearly half of them began to grow right after calling a new pastor. The building did not change. The neighborhood did not change. What changed was that a leader arrived with a vision, shared it with the people, and the people caught it. Vision, shared and owned, is what breaks a church out of its long sleep.
So the call to leadership is first a call to be a person of vision and vitality — to keep your own fire burning before God, and then to see, and to share what you see, until the congregation sees it too.
Tulipo Sasa (2026)Where We Are Now (2026)
Everything above remains true: vision is still the key ingredient, and a leader’s own spiritual vitality is still where renewal begins. But the last thirty years have written a second half to this unit in hard lessons, and it cannot be left unsaid. We learned to prize the visionary leader — the bold, driven, charismatic figure who could cast a vision and gather a crowd — and then we watched, again and again, such leaders fall, and take a congregation’s faith down with them when they fell. The wreckage taught the whole church something it should have known from Scripture all along: gift is not the same as character, and the church that measures a leader by gift alone is building over a fault line.
So we must now hold two things together that the first edition held only one of. Vision without character is the most dangerous thing in a church — the more magnetic the leader, the greater the ruin when the hidden life does not match the public one. The New Testament knew this perfectly: when it lists the qualifications of an overseer, almost every one of them is a matter of character, not talent — above reproach, self-controlled, gentle, not a lover of money, faithful at home, not a new convert (1 Timothy 3; Titus 1). The one explicitly competence-related requirement is that he be able to teach. Scripture screens first for who a man is, and only then for what he can do. We had reversed the order, and we paid for it.
Two practical guards follow. The first is accountability: no leader, however gifted, should stand alone and unquestioned. A healthy circle of leadership around the pastor — elders, a team, partners who can tell him the truth to his face — is not a limit on his vision but the very thing that keeps his vision from destroying him. The lone, unaccountable visionary is the figure the years have taught us to fear. The second is a recovered understanding of the office itself. The leader of a growing church is not finally a chief executive who builds an organization around his own gifts, but a shepherd who feeds the flock and an equipper who, as Scripture says, prepares God’s people for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:11–12). His success is not measured by how indispensable he has made himself, but by how many others he has raised up to lead and to serve. The pastor who builds a church that cannot function without him has not succeeded; he has only made himself a single point of failure.
The vision, then, still comes first — but it must be carried by a trustworthy hand. The breakout church still begins when a leader sees what God could do and the people catch it. What the years have added is simply this: see that the man who carries the vision is a man whose private life could bear the weight of the public one. The church does not finally need more brilliant leaders. It needs more faithful ones.
