Before a church can run a plan for its deacons, it must know what a deacon is. The Deacon Family Ministry Plan, which this course will study unit by unit, is a way of organizing the care of a whole congregation through its deacons; it was developed and is widely used among Southern Baptist churches. But a plan for deacons is only as good as its grasp of the office it serves. So in this first unit we set the plan aside and go back to the Scriptures to ask a simpler question: what kind of man, doing what kind of work, does the New Testament call a deacon?

The answer begins with the word itself. "Deacon" is simply the English form of the Greek word diakonos, a common, humble word that means a servant — one who waits on tables, attends to needs, and serves others. The New Testament uses this word and its relatives (the verb diakoneō, to serve, and the noun diakonia, service or ministry) more than ninety times, very often of plain, ordinary service. By his very name, then, the deacon is a servant. He is not first a manager, a board member, or an officer of business. He is a servant of the church.

Far from lowering the man, the title honors him, for it is shared by the greatest. Paul calls himself a diakonos of the gospel and of the church (Ephesians 3:7; Colossians 1:25), and Scripture even calls Christ Himself a servant of the circumcision for the truth of God (Romans 15:8). The servant of the church follows the supreme Servant. Alongside Acts 6, two other passages anchor what the New Testament says about deacons: Philippians 1:1, where Paul greets the overseers and deacons as the two settled groups of leaders in a healthy church, and 1 Timothy 3:8–13, which lists the deacon's qualifications in detail. We will weigh those qualifications in Unit 2; here we lay the foundation beneath them all.

Hivi ndivyo hasa Bwana Yesu alivyoufafanua ukuu katika ufalme Wake. Kabla huduma yoyote iitwayo "shemasi" haijakuwepo, Yeye alikuwa ameshaupindua utaratibu wa ulimwengu:This is exactly how the Lord Jesus defined greatness in His kingdom. Before any office called "deacon" existed, He had already overturned the world's order:

(Marko 10:43–45, SUV)Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. (Mark 10:43–45, NKJV)

The office of deacon is this teaching made permanent — a standing, visible reminder in every church that its leaders serve the people; they do not lord over them. The deacon wears the towel, not the crown.

Kielelezo. Illustration. In Mountains Beyond Mountains, Tracy Kidder tells of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Harvard physician who could have built a comfortable career anywhere he pleased. Instead, appalled by the suffering of the poor in Haiti, he poured out his life founding clinics that now serve about a million people. Challenged once that no one could love the children of strangers as his own, he answered, “All the great religions say, ‘love thy neighbor as thyself.’ I’m sorry. I can’t. But I’m going to keep on trying.” That is the servant’s heart the deacon is called to wear — a life spent for others rather than on itself.

Although the word "deacon" does not actually appear in the passage, the church has always seen the seed and pattern of the diaconate in the seven men chosen in Acts chapter 6. The fit is unmistakable: a practical need arises, spiritually qualified men are set apart to meet it, and the apostles are freed for the Word and prayer. From this one account we will draw five lessons about the ministry of the deacon.

Subject: the biblical origin and nature of the deacon's ministry.

Proposition: God established the deacon's service so that practical care, entrusted to godly servants, would protect the ministry of the Word, guard the unity of the church, and advance the gospel.

I. Hitaji Lililozaa WatumishiI. The Need That Gave Rise to Servants

Kanisa la Yerusalemu lilikuwa likikua haraka, na ukuaji huo ulileta mvutano:The diaconate was not born out of theory but out of a very real, very awkward problem. The church in Jerusalem was growing quickly, and growth brought strain:

(Matendo 6:1, SUV)Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. (Acts 6:1, NKJV)

The Greek-speaking (Hellenist) widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food, while the Hebrew widows were cared for. Notice what kind of problem this was. It was not a doctrinal heresy or an outside persecution; it was something as ordinary as hungry widows and the appearance of partiality at the food line. The first deacons were appointed to make sure that widows were fed and treated fairly. Here is the first lesson: deacon ministry begins where real human need meets the family of God. It is never beneath a deacon to attend to the practical, the physical, and the overlooked.

Scripture never treats such care as a lesser thing. James makes it the very test of true religion: "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble…" (James 1:27, NKJV). What the world counts small — a meal carried to a widow, a fair share at the table — heaven counts as worship. The deacon is the church's appointed hands for exactly this work.

Notice, too, the danger. A neglected need was breeding a complaint — a murmuring — that threatened the unity of the young church along ethnic lines. Practical neglect always carries spiritual consequences. Left unattended, the matter of the widows could have split the body in two. The deacon stands at exactly this point, where a quiet, unmet need could grow into a public wound.

II. Kipaumbele Kinachopaswa KulindwaII. The Priority That Must Be Protected

Jibu la mitume linadhihirisha kusudi lililo ndani kabisa la shemasi:The apostles' response reveals the deacon's deepest purpose:

Wale Thenashara wakawaita jamii ya wanafunzi, wakasema, "Haipendezi sisi tuliache neno la Mungu, tukahudumu mezani." (Matendo 6:2, SUV)Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables." (Acts 6:2, NKJV)

Kwa hiyo waliazimia:This is not contempt for serving tables. The apostles call the work good and worthy of seven Spirit-filled men; they simply recognize their own calling and its limits. If the Twelve tried to manage the food distribution personally, the ministry of the Word and prayer would suffer. So they resolved:

(Matendo 6:4, SUV)but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. (Acts 6:4, NKJV)

Here is the second lesson, and it is the heart of the office: the deacon exists to carry the load of practical care so that the spiritual leaders are freed for the Word and prayer. When the deacons serve well, the pastor can give himself to study, preaching, teaching, and prayer without being swallowed by tasks that others can do just as faithfully. The health of the pulpit is tied to the faithfulness of the deacons. A church served by devoted deacons is a church whose minister is free to feed it.

This was the first division of labor in the Christian church, and it set a pattern for all time: good work must never be allowed to crowd out the best work. Every leader has limits of time and strength, and wisdom assigns each task to the right hands. The deacon, by taking up what would otherwise pull the minister away from the Word, guards the one ministry no one else can give the church.

III. Tabia Inayopaswa KudaiwaIII. The Character That Must Be Required

Mitume walipoeleza watu wanaopaswa kuchaguliwa, masharti yao yanashangaza:When the apostles described the men to be chosen, their requirements are striking:

Basi, ndugu, chagueni watu saba miongoni mwenu, watu walioshuhudiwa kuwa wema, wamejaa Roho na hekima, ambao tutawaweka juu ya jambo hili. (Matendo 6:3, SUV)Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. (Acts 6:3, NKJV)

Three things are required, and not one of them is administrative skill. They must be of good reputation — men whose honesty is attested by the whole community. They must be full of the Holy Spirit — men whose lives are governed by God. And they must be full of wisdom — men of sound, practical judgment. The work was waiting on tables; the requirement was spiritual maturity. This is the third lesson: the church refused to separate practical service from spiritual character. A man who handles the church's people, money, and reputation must himself be a man of God. We will study these qualifications in detail in Unit 2, but already we see that a deacon is chosen for what he is before he is trusted with what he does.

Notice the pairing of the two inward marks. To be full of the Holy Spirit is to be governed Godward — yielded, holy, and led by God; to be full of wisdom is to be capable manward — sound and discerning in the affairs of people. The church wanted both, for a man may be devout yet imprudent, or shrewd yet unspiritual, and neither alone is fit to serve. Together they describe a mature believer the congregation can trust with its weakest members and its most delicate needs.

IV. Kanisa LinalowatengaIV. The Church That Sets Them Apart

Jinsi walivyowekwa inafundisha kama vile watu wenyewe:The manner of their appointment is as instructive as the men themselves:

…ambao waliwaweka mbele ya mitume; nao walipokwisha kuomba, wakaweka mikono yao juu yao. (Matendo 6:6, SUV)…whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. (Acts 6:6, NKJV)

The whole congregation chose the seven — and Stephen is named first among them. They then presented these men to the apostles, who confirmed and commissioned them with prayer and the laying on of hands. See the beautiful partnership: the body chooses, and the leaders confirm. Deacon ministry is neither self-appointed nor autocratically imposed; it rises from the church and is set apart before God. The laying on of hands was not a magic rite but a public recognition and blessing, marking these men out for holy service. This is the fourth lesson, and it tells us where a deacon's authority comes from: it is not seized but conferred by the church and consecrated in prayer.

V. Matunda Ambayo Utumishi HuzaaV. The Fruit That Service Bears

The chapter ends not with full stomachs but with an explosion of the gospel:

(Matendo 6:7, SUV)Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. (Acts 6:7, NKJV)

This is no accident of arrangement. With the widows cared for, the unity of the church restored, and the apostles freed to preach, the Word of God ran and the church grew — so much that even many of the priests came to faith. Here is the fifth lesson: servant ministry and gospel growth are tied together. When deacons take up the burden of care so that the Word can be preached and the body kept in peace, God blesses His church with increase. The deacon's quiet, practical service is the soil in which the preached Word bears fruit.

HitimishoConclusion

Gather the five lessons and you have the heart of the office. The deacon's very name means servant. His Lord defined greatness as service and washed feet to prove it. His pattern in Acts 6 shows a service that meets real need, protects the Word, requires godly character, rises from the church, and bears gospel fruit. The deacon is, in a word, service made holy.

Every Christian is called to this servant spirit, but the deacon is called to embody it before the whole church, so that when the congregation looks at him it sees a living picture of the Lord who came not to be served but to serve. That is a high calling clothed in humble work. It is a calling that costs a man his comfort and his pride, yet it repays him with the quiet dignity of standing where his Master once stood — towel in hand, among the very people he loves. The church has never lacked for men willing to lead; its deepest need, in every generation, is for men willing to serve.

Kielelezo. Illustration. Ralph Neighbour tells of a man named Jack, a corporation president who was ruthlessly cast aside when he was diagnosed with cancer, burning through his insurance and his savings with a wife and daughter to leave behind. A deacon and his pastor came to visit. At first the deacon offended him, asking whether he had prepared for life after death, and Jack ordered them out. But the deacon went back, humbly apologized, and then told him this: a realtor in the church would sell Jack’s house and donate the commission; the men of the church would make the payments until it sold; an apartment owner had offered his widow a home, free utilities, and a salary; and the proceeds would send his daughter to college. “Jack cried like a baby.” He died still resisting Christ — yet he had felt the love of God through a deacon’s hands, and his widow, moved by that care, later came to faith. That is the Deacon Family Ministry Plan at work before it ever had a name.

The Deacon Family Ministry Plan, which we take up beginning in Unit 4, is simply one careful, proven way to put Acts 6 into practice in a local church: to make sure that in a growing congregation no "widow" is neglected, every family is known and cared for, and the pastor is freed for the Word. Before we ever learn the plan, we must have the heart, for if we forget the heart the plan becomes mere machinery, but if we keep the heart the plan becomes living service. The deacon is a servant — and his service is the ground in which the Word of God grows.
