Mfalme na Ufalme WakeThe King and His Kingdom

Wale Kumi na Wawili, Mahubiri ya Mlimani, na Mifano ya UfalmeThe Twelve, the Sermon on the Mount, and the Parables of the Kingdom

1. Mfalme Anawachagua Wale Kumi na Wawili1. The King Chooses the Twelve

Mfalme alikuwa amekuja, naye alikuja akitangaza utawala. From the wilderness Jesus came into Galilee, and Matthew sums up the whole season in a single sweep: He went about "teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness" (Matthew 4:23). Three strands — teaching, preaching, healing — but one theme runs through them all: the kingdom. The King had come, and He came announcing a reign.

A king gathers a court; but before He chose, He prayed. "He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God" (Luke 6:12). The weight of the choice drove Him to His knees through the dark. Then "He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach" (Mark 3:14). Hold those two purposes in their order, for the order is the lesson: first to be with Him, then to be sent. Communion before commission; the messenger must know the King before he can carry the King's word.

Watu hawa wa kawaida, walioitwa mitume, "waliotumwa," wangekuwa msingi ambao juu yake kanisa lilijengwa (Waefeso 2:20).He chose twelve — and the number is no accident, for Israel had twelve tribes, and around Himself the Lord was quietly forming a new people (Matthew 19:28). He chose them from the wrong end of the world's ladder: fishermen, a despised tax collector, a hot-blooded zealot. "God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise" (1 Corinthians 1:27). The list even ends in a shadow — "Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him" (Mark 3:19). These ordinary men, called apostles, "sent ones," would become the foundation on which the church was built (Ephesians 2:20).

And why send them at all? Because when He saw the crowds He was "moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd" (Matthew 9:36). To His disciples He said, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest" (Matthew 9:37–38). The Twelve were the first answer to that prayer.

2. Mahubiri ya Mlimani: Tabia ya Ufalme2. The Sermon on the Mount: The Character of the Kingdom

He went up on a mountain and sat down to teach (Matthew 5:1–2) — a new Moses on a new mountain, yet with a difference: Moses said, "Thus says the LORD," while this Teacher said, "But I say to you" (Matthew 5:22), speaking with the law-Giver's own authority.

He began not with commands but with blessings, and every blessing turned the world upside down. "Blessed are the poor in spirit... those who mourn... the meek... those who hunger and thirst for righteousness... the merciful... the pure in heart... the peacemakers... those who are persecuted" (Matthew 5:3–10). The world counts the rich and comfortable and strong as blessed; the King pronounces His blessing on the empty, the grieving, the lowly, the hungry. The citizens of His kingdom are marked not by what they own or achieve but by a poverty of spirit that knows its need of God.

These citizens are to live visibly: "You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:13–16). The kingdom is not a private religion but a public savor and a public light.

Then He turned to the law and made plain He had not come to loosen it: "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill" (Matthew 5:17). Six times He said, "You have heard... but I say to you," and each time He drove the command past the hand to the heart. You have heard "You shall not murder" — but the anger that kills in the heart is already guilty (Matthew 5:21–22). You have heard "You shall not commit adultery" — but the lustful look has already done it within (Matthew 5:27–28). The righteousness of the kingdom must "exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees" (Matthew 5:20) — not by more rules kept outwardly, but by a clean heart.

Aliwafundisha kuomba: "Baba yetu uliye mbinguni, Jina lako litukuzwe. Ufalme wako uje. Mapenzi yako yatimizwe" (Mathayo 6:9–10). He taught them to pray: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done" (Matthew 6:9–10). He warned that no one can serve two masters — "You cannot serve God and mammon" (Matthew 6:24) — and lifted their eyes off anxious striving: "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (Matthew 6:33).

Before the close He set two roads before them: "Enter by the narrow gate" (Matthew 7:13), for the way to life is hard and few find it. He warned that not every claim is real — "You will know them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:16) — and "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father" (Matthew 7:21). Profession is not possession.

Dhoruba haijengi tabia; inaufunua msingi uliokuwako siku zote. And He ended not with a flourish but with a foundation. Two men built houses, and from the outside the houses looked the same. Then the rain fell, the floods came, the winds beat on both, and one stood while the other fell — "and great was its fall" (Matthew 7:27). The only difference lay underneath, unseen until the storm: one had dug down to rock, the other had laid his house on sand. The storm does not build character; it reveals the foundation that was always there. And the rock, Jesus said, is to hear His words "and does them" (Matthew 7:24). The Sermon does not ask to be admired; it asks to be built upon. No wonder "the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes" (Matthew 7:28–29).

3. Mifano ya Ufalme3. The Parables of the Kingdom

Much of His Galilean teaching came in parables — earthly stories with a heavenly point. When the disciples asked why, He answered that a parable both reveals and conceals: "to you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given" (Matthew 13:11). The story rewards the seeker who leans in and slips past the scoffer who will not.

In Matthew 13 He told a string of them, each opening, "The kingdom of heaven is like..." The Sower scatters seed on four soils — the hard path, the rocky ground, the thorns, and the good earth — and Jesus Himself explained that the seed is the word and the soils are the hearts that hear it (Matthew 13:18–23). The kingdom advances not by force but by a sown word, and the harvest depends on the soil. The wheat and the tares grow together in one field; the servants want to tear out the weeds at once, but the owner says wait — let both grow until the harvest, lest the wheat be uprooted with them (Matthew 13:30). The kingdom and its counterfeit are intertwined now; God Himself will do the sorting, and not before the time.

Ufalme si faida ndogo inayoongezwa kwenye maisha yaliyojaa tayari; ndiyo hazina ambayo mtu mwenye hekima hubadilisha kwa furaha vyote alivyo navyo ili aipate. The mustard seed is least of seeds yet becomes a tree (Matthew 13:31–32); the leaven is hidden in the dough until the whole is leavened (Matthew 13:33). The kingdom begins almost invisibly and spreads beyond all reckoning. And it is worth everything: a man finds treasure hidden in a field, and "for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field" (Matthew 13:44); a merchant finds one pearl of great price and sells everything to have it (Matthew 13:45–46). The kingdom is not a bargain added to a full life; it is the treasure for which a wise man gladly trades all he owns.

Last, a dragnet is cast and gathers fish of every kind, and at the end the good are kept and the bad thrown away (Matthew 13:47–50) — the same final sorting as the tares. A disciple who has grasped all this, Jesus said, is like a householder who brings out of his treasure "things new and old" (Matthew 13:52).

4. Mfalme na Ufalme Wake4. The King and His Kingdom

Viweke vitatu hivyo pamoja. Set the three together. The King gathered messengers to carry the kingdom; on the mountain He described the citizens of the kingdom; in the parables He unveiled its nature — present but hidden, sown and not imposed, mixed with its counterfeit until the harvest, small now but unstoppable, and worth all a man has. It is not yet a kingdom of armies and thrones; it is entered by the new birth (recall Unit 3) and lived out from a changed heart.

And the One who teaches it is the God-Man still. As a man He sat wearied on a hillside and told stories of seeds and bread and fishing nets; as God He spoke with an authority that left the crowds breathless — "But I say to you." The kingdom He preached asks the same of us it asked of them: not applause, but a house dug down to the Rock; not curiosity about the seed, but a heart made good ground.
