Utangulizi: Jinsi Injili IlivyotufikiaIntroduction: How the Gospel Reached Us

Mitume walipokufa, Injili haikufa pamoja nao. When the apostles died, the gospel did not die with them. For roughly fifteen centuries — from the last apostle to the dawn of the modern missionary movement — the message of Christ kept moving outward across the world. Sometimes it advanced through the witness of martyrs, sometimes through the labors of monks, sometimes carried by deeply flawed institutions; but it never stopped, for the Lord had promised, "on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18, NKJV). In this unit we trace those centuries — not to glorify the church's institutions, but to see how God kept His gospel moving toward the nations until it finally reached us.

I. Damu ya MashahidiI. The Blood of the Martyrs

The first Christians had no armies, no wealth, and no political power. They were a persecuted minority in a hostile empire. And yet within three centuries they had filled the Roman world. How? In large part, by dying well. Writing around the year 200, Tertullian gave the most famous answer in church history: "the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church." Every public execution became a kind of free advertisement. Pagan crowds came to the arena to watch Christians die, and some of them, astonished at the courage and forgiveness they saw, went home Christians themselves.

The gospel in those years was carried not by professional missionaries but by ordinary believers — merchants, soldiers, slaves, and travelers — who took the message along the roads and trade routes of the empire. Persecution could chain the preachers, but, as Paul had written from his own prison, "the word of God is not chained" (2 Timothy 2:9, NKJV).

II. Dola ya Kikristo — Zawadi na HatariII. A Christian Empire — Gift and Danger

Early in the fourth century the emperor Constantine ended the persecutions, and before long the empire itself became officially Christian. This was, in one sense, a great gift: churches could be built openly, Scriptures copied freely, and the gospel preached without fear. But it brought a danger that has shadowed missions ever since. When being a Christian became respectable — even advantageous — the churches filled with people who had been baptized but never converted. A Christianized culture is not the same thing as a converted people. The missionary must always remember the difference.

III. Watawa WamisionariIII. The Missionary Monks

Through the long medieval centuries, when much of the old Roman world was overrun by pagan tribes, it was often monks who carried the gospel into the darkness. Patrick took it to Ireland. Columba carried it from Ireland to Scotland and the island of Iona. Boniface went to the fierce tribes of Germany. Gregory the Great sent the missionary bishop Augustine of Canterbury to England in the year 597, and within a single generation the Anglo-Saxons had been converted. Far to the east, Cyril and Methodius brought the gospel to the Slavic peoples, and even gave them an alphabet so that they could read the Scriptures in their own tongue. Whatever their limitations, these men left home, crossed cultures, and learned new languages for the sake of Christ.

IV. Nuru Inafifia — na WatanguliziIV. The Light Grows Dim — and the Forerunners

As the centuries passed, the medieval church grew rich and powerful, and in many places the simple gospel of grace was buried under layers of human tradition, works, and superstition. Yet God never left Himself without a witness. Men arose to call the church back to Christ and to put the Scriptures before the people: John Wycliffe in England, who labored to give his countrymen the Bible in their own language, and John Hus in Bohemia, who preached the gospel boldly and was burned at the stake for it. They were the forerunners of the great recovery that was coming.

V. Matengenezo ya Kanisa — Injili ImerejeshwaV. The Reformation — Gospel Recovered

In the sixteenth century the gospel of justification by grace through faith burst back into the light. Through men like Martin Luther, William Tyndale, and John Calvin, the Scriptures were translated and placed into the hands of ordinary people in their own languages, and the church was called back to the cross of Christ. This recovery of the true gospel was the indispensable foundation for everything that followed in world missions. For this is plain: you cannot send out a gospel you have lost. Before the church could carry the good news to the nations with power, it first had to recover the good news itself.

VI. Kuchelewa kwa Matengenezo katika Kazi ya UmisheniVI. The Reformation's Missionary Lag

And yet, for all its glory, the Reformation was strangely slow to take up foreign missions. The Reformers were consumed with reforming the church at home and with simply surviving fierce opposition, and some of them taught that the Great Commission had been binding only on the original apostles, who had already carried the gospel to the known world. Meanwhile, it was Catholic missionaries — the Jesuits and men like Francis Xavier — who were crossing the oceans, carrying their message to Brazil, Mexico, India, China, and Japan. The Protestant world, for all it had recovered, would wait nearly two more centuries for a humble English shoemaker to challenge the apostles-only thinking and reopen the Great Commission for the whole church. That is the story of our next unit.

Hitimisho: Warithi na WadeniConclusion: Heirs and Debtors

From the arena to the monastery to the translator's desk, God never left Himself without a witness among the nations. The gospel that finally reached us traveled fifteen centuries to get here, carried at great cost by martyrs, monks, and Reformers who never saw our faces. We are their heirs, and we are the debtors of all who bore the light before us. The same Lord who kept His church through all those centuries is building it still — and the task is now in our hands.
