The Master's textbook test: read Harvey, The Pastor: His Qualifications and Duties (assigned excerpts), then take its test: twenty fill-in-the-blank questions, drawn from forty; eighteen right passes. Each answer is marked right or wrong at once. Correct answers and explanations are available after the attempt passes. It is separate from the reading test on the five digests below: passing one does not pass the other. On the M.Div. and Th.M. tracks both tests are being introduced; each test's page says whether it is in force yet. Until then any student may take them, and a pass is kept in your record.

Jinsi ya kutumia rafu hii

This course is about the care of souls — the calling and the character, the shepherd’s work of feeding, leading, and guarding, the personal knowing of the flock, the guarding of the pastor’s own heart, and the long faithful finish. These five readings are Chapala Theological Seminary digests, each drawn from the great public-domain classics of pastoral ministry — Gregory the Great, Richard Baxter, Ichabod Spencer, and the apostle Peter — and each written to be read on its own, in English, Spanish or French. Choose any three, read them in full, and record your reading below.

The Master's reading test: separate from the honors invitation below. Honors asks you to read any three of these digests; the Master's test covers all five. It has twenty fill-in-the-blank questions, four from each reading, drawn from forty; eighteen right passes. Each answer is marked right or wrong at once; correct answers and explanations are available after the attempt passes. You may try again after a short wait. The test is being introduced: its page says whether it is in force yet. Until then any student may take it, and a pass is kept in your record.

Somo la the digests & the links

Every one of these five readings is a Chapala Theological Seminary digest, written by CTS and available here on the site — all of them open directly from this page, in English, Spanish or French, with nothing to download. Each digest draws on a public-domain classic of pastoral ministry, but the digests themselves are CTS-authored teaching, not reproductions, and the classic works they rest on are freely available online for any who wish to read them in full.

Yaliyochaguliwa: 0 kati ya 3

The Calling · Who Is Fit to Shepherd
1.The Shepherd’s Call and CharacterMuhtasari wa CTS
muhtasari · takriban maneno 1,900 kwa kila lugha

The weight of the pastoral office (“the government of souls is the art of arts”), why it must not be entered for ambition or gain, the inward call confirmed by the church, and — above all — the character it requires: for the qualifications of First Timothy and Titus are mostly character, not skill. Godliness comes before gifts, and humility is the pastoral grace.

The Work · Feed, Lead, Guard the Flock
2.Feeding, Leading, GuardingMuhtasari wa CTS
muhtasari · takriban maneno 1,900 kwa kila lugha

The pastor as under-shepherd of Christ’s flock, doing the shepherd’s three great works: feeding the sheep the whole counsel of God, leading them by example toward maturity, and guarding them from wolves and every danger — all with Baxter’s call to wholehearted diligence, over a flock God purchased with His own blood.

The Parlour · Visitation and Personal Care
3.Knowing the FlockMuhtasari wa CTS
muhtasari · takriban maneno 1,900 kwa kila lugha

The flock is made of individuals, each to be known by name. The vital duty of visitation — going to the people, not only waiting for them — with Spencer’s Pastor’s Sketches as the model of wise, personal dealing with each soul, adapting the word to the person, in the very work Christ Himself did one soul at a time.

The Heart · Guarding the Pastor’s Own Soul
4.The Peril of the MinistryMuhtasari wa CTS
muhtasari · takriban maneno 1,900 kwa kila lugha

Baxter’s “take heed to yourselves” — first, before the flock — the special dangers of ministry (dullness with holy things, work in place of walk, pride, applause, gain, hypocrisy, discouragement), and the self-watch that keeps both the pastor’s life and his doctrine, resting on the keeping grace of the Chief Shepherd.

The Finish · Enduring to the End
5.Faithfulness and RewardMuhtasari wa CTS
muhtasari · takriban maneno 1,900 kwa kila lugha

The long road of ministry and how to stay faithful over a lifetime — shepherding willingly, unselfishly, and humbly; not losing heart under hardship; the quiet ministry of staying; serving out of love for Christ and His flock; and the unfading crown the Chief Shepherd gives. The capstone that gathers the whole course into one.

The Calling · What Makes a Shepherd Faithful
    1. Faithful Shepherding

Houghton asks the plain question this whole course rests on: how would you know whether a man pastoring is faithful to the calling or not? His answer comes in three marks. The faithful shepherd loves his flock — and the distinction our Lord draws between the shepherd and the hireling is not schooling or ability but attitude toward the sheep. He tends, provides, guides, and guards — in the homes of his people, preaching the whole counsel of God, and warning them of wolves, because to be silent when warning is needed is sin. And he remembers he is accountable to the Chief Shepherd. Note the shape of it: an interrogative, a keyword, three parallel divisions. Short, and worth the ten minutes twice.

Calling & Character · Who Should Lead — and Who Should Not
    2. The Book of Pastoral Rule

The oldest thing on this shelf, and still the most searching. Gregory wrote it at the beginning of his episcopate, to a bishop who had reproved him for trying to hide from the office — and his reason for writing was that no man should seek the work unwarily, nor hold it without trembling. Chapters 10 and 11 are a matched pair: the portrait of the man who ought to come to rule, and then its negative. His premise is one line every pastor should carry: no one presumes to teach an art he has not learned, yet men take up the care of souls, which is the art of arts. Written for bishops, read for fourteen centuries by everyone else.

Weddings & Funerals · The Day Someone Dies
    3. Pastoral Etiquette

The shortest reading on this shelf, and deliberately so — it is a checklist, not an essay, and you will want it in your pocket rather than in your memory. It walks the whole path: the first hour (be prompt, be helpful, be brief — read Scripture, pray, and stay until things are under control), the day following, the viewing, the service, the graveside, and the six weeks after. The small mercies are the useful part. Arrive fifteen minutes early to prepare your own soul. Ask the funeral director which way the head faces before you reach the cemetery. Call on the bereaved once a week for six weeks — because the flowers stop coming and the grief does not.

    Visitation · House to House
    4. The Reformed Pastor

Do not let the title mislead you: “Reformed” here means renewed, not Calvinist. Baxter’s own theology sat well outside Reformed orthodoxy — the Calvinists of his day fought him over it — and his full title says what the book is actually about: the nature of the Pastoral work; especially in Private Instruction and Catechizing. He wrote it for a day of humiliation his fellow ministers kept at Worcester in December 1655, and then was too ill to go and preach it. This section is the manner of the thing — how a man takes heed to the flock, not merely that he should. Baxter’s own image for ministers who leave the work undone: men asleep at the pumps while the ship fills. The longest reading here, and the one that will cost you something.

The Long Faithful Finish · The Ministry of Not Leaving
    5. Pastors, There’s a Ministry in Staying Put

A pastor ten years into one church, writing honestly about the year he nearly sent a resignation letter instead of a pandemic update. A third of pastors have considered quitting; the pressure is always to move onward and upward. Vrbicek’s counter is that simply staying is itself a victory — preach another decent sermon, officiate another wedding, bury another beloved saint, and then do it again. He is candid that the ministry of staying put often feels like the ministry of being left. But Paul told Timothy to stay long enough that everyone could see his progress, and trust for the weddings, the crises, and the funerals is built over years, not months. The gentlest reading here, and the one for the man who is tired.

Counseling · Sitting with the Anxious Inquirer
    6. A Pastor’s Sketches

Every other reading here tells you about the work; this one puts you in the room. Spencer wrote down his conversations with anxious inquirers as they happened, and said of the collection simply that it is a book of truth — facts, not fancies. This sketch takes the excuse a pastor meets most often and can answer worst: I am waiting for the Spirit. Spencer will not allow it. He deals with the soul in front of him as a man who must repent and believe now, and whose very plea of inability is the proof of the case against him — while never letting go of the truth that grace is God’s to give. Read it before your next conversation with someone under conviction. The whole volume is online at the link below; the other forty-four sketches will keep.

The Pastor’s Soul · Take Heed to Yourself
    7. The Reformed Pastor

Before Baxter tells pastors how to oversee a congregation, he tells them to watch their own hearts. Gifts, office, and public usefulness cannot compensate for private spiritual decay. This selection belongs in pastoral ministry because the pastor’s character is not an accessory to his work; it is one of the principal instruments through which the work is done.

Compassion · Near to the People, Near to God
    8. The Book of Pastoral Rule

Gregory argues that a pastor must be joined to his people by compassion while remaining rooted in contemplation of God. Ministry fails when the pastor becomes so inward that he cannot feel another person’s grief, or so busy with people that he loses the presence of God. The chapter gives a durable picture of pastoral balance.

    9. A Pastor’s Sketches

Spencer records pastoral conversation rather than abstract theory. In this sketch the minister must listen, diagnose spiritual confusion, speak plainly, and refuse both harshness and sentimentality. It gives students a model of patient, personal ministry in the middle of household anxiety.

    10. The Christian Ministry

Bridges treats prayer not as one pastoral duty among many but as the hidden strength of preaching, visitation, counsel, and endurance. He is valuable to Baptist students even though he was Anglican because his concern here is not church polity but the minister’s dependence upon God. The reading presses the pastor to pray for the people before attempting to lead them.
