Chumba cha Masomo ya Ziada

Walking with God — chagua matatu yoyote

The Master's textbook test: read Collins, Soul Care (assigned excerpts), then take its test: twenty fill-in-the-blank questions, drawn from forty; eighteen right passes. Each answer is marked right or wrong at once. Correct answers and explanations are available after the attempt passes. It is separate from the reading test on the five digests below: passing one does not pass the other. On the M.Div. and Th.M. tracks both tests are being introduced; each test's page says whether it is in force yet. Until then any student may take them, and a pass is kept in your record.

Jinsi ya kutumia rafu hii

This course is about the practical Christian life — the life you actually live between Sundays: a whole-life devotion to God, the inner life of following Christ, the life of prayer, the fight against sin, and the long faithful finish. These five readings are Chapala Theological Seminary digests, each drawn from the great public-domain classics of the devotional life — Thomas à Kempis, William Law, and Andrew Murray — and each written to be read on its own, in English, Spanish or French. Choose any three, read them in full, and record your reading below.

The Master's reading test: separate from the honors invitation below. Honors asks you to read any three of these digests; the Master's test covers all five. It has twenty fill-in-the-blank questions, four from each reading, drawn from forty; eighteen right passes. Each answer is marked right or wrong at once; correct answers and explanations are available after the attempt passes. You may try again after a short wait. The test is being introduced: its page says whether it is in force yet. Until then any student may take it, and a pass is kept in your record.

Somo la the digests & the links

Every one of these five readings is a Chapala Theological Seminary digest, written by CTS and available here on the site — all of them open directly from this page, in English, Spanish or French, with nothing to download. Each digest draws on a public-domain classic of the devotional life, but the digests themselves are CTS-authored teaching, not reproductions, and the classic works they rest on are freely available online for any who wish to read them in full.

Kusoma kwa lugha nyingine

Most of these works are in English. If you would rather read in Spanish, French or another language, the Chrome browser can translate a whole page for you. On a computer, right-click anywhere on the opened reading and choose “Translate to…”. On an Android phone or tablet, tap the three-dot menu and choose “Translate”. On an iPhone or iPad, tap the translate icon in the address bar. Machine translation is not perfect, but it is enough to follow the argument.

Masomo Matano

Yaliyochaguliwa: 0 kati ya 3

The Whole Life · A Serious, Wholehearted Devotion
1.A Serious Call: The Devout and Holy LifeMuhtasari wa CTS
muhtasari · takriban maneno 1,900 kwa kila lugha

The call to a wholehearted rather than half-hearted religion; what real devotion is — all of life ordered to please God, not a compartment kept beside a worldly life; the inconsistency of being devout in prayer but worldly everywhere else; living to please God in everything. Grace-framed: devotion as glad surrender flowing from grace, not works to earn it.

The Inner Life · Following Christ from the Heart
2.The Imitation of Christ: The Hidden Life of DevotionMuhtasari wa CTS
muhtasari · takriban maneno 1,900 kwa kila lugha

Following Christ inwardly and not in outward show; humility as the root of the devout life (framed as freeing truthfulness before a loving God, not self-hatred); self-denial and the royal road of the cross; holding the world loosely; and the soul’s intimate communion with Christ — all as His grace-work in us.

Prayer · Learning to Pray from the Master
3.With Christ in the School of PrayerMuhtasari wa CTS
muhtasari · takriban maneno 1,900 kwa kila lugha

Learning to pray from Jesus Himself: prayer as communion with the Father, praying in Jesus’ name (union with Him, not a formula), praying in faith (trusting God’s wisdom and will, not dictating to Him), persevering prayer since God’s delays are not denials, and a whole life of prayer, abiding in Christ and helped by the Spirit.

The Battle · Overcoming Sin by Grace
4.The Fight for Holiness: Overcoming SinMuhtasari wa CTS
muhtasari · takriban maneno 1,900 kwa kila lugha

The real, lifelong battle against indwelling sin — won not by willpower but by grace and the Spirit: putting sin to death (mortification), putting on Christ, using the means grace works through (Word, prayer, watchfulness, faith), and fighting from Christ’s already-won victory, forgiven when we fall and finally perfected by grace.

The Finish · Persevering to the End
5.Running with Endurance: Perseverance in the Christian LifeMuhtasari wa CTS
muhtasari · takriban maneno 1,900 kwa kila lugha

The capstone: the race won by finishing; the long road of dryness and hardship (with a care note that dry seasons are normal, not a sign of God’s displeasure); looking to Jesus the author and finisher; not growing weary; the means of perseverance; and — resting on God’s keeping power — running all the way to the end. It gathers the whole course into one.

Somo la Heshima — limeandikwa

alithibitisha tarehe kuwa amesoma kikamilifu:

Chapala Theological Seminary · Practical Theology · present or print this page as your honors reading record.

The Quiet Time · How to Actually Begin
    1. How to Have a Daily Quiet Time

The most practical thing on this shelf, and the one to read first if your devotional life has quietly died. It begins where honesty begins: most of us struggle at this, and we are not sure what a “successful” time with God even is — whether we must feel peace, or get a message. That is not what happens every time, and that is all right. The quiet time is not the point; it is a tool. Then it gives you the three things Jesus did in Mark 1:35 — He chose a time, a place, and a plan — and hands you a structure simple enough to keep: prayer, the Word, prayer again. There is a printable copy to carry or pass to someone else, and a Spanish edition written, not machine-translated.

Walking with God · The Silence You Have to Protect
    2. The Imitation of Christ

The shortest reading on this shelf — two pages — and the one most likely to follow you around for a week. After the Bible, this is the most widely read Christian book ever written, and it helped bring both Wesley and John Newton to Christ; Wesley thought so much of it that he abridged it for his own preachers. Chapter 20 is the ancestor of every quiet time: seek a suitable time, leave curiosities alone, and withdraw from idle talk and running about, and you will find you had enough time all along. Its most honest line is a confession: as often as I have been among men, I have returned less a man. Written in a monastery, and read for six hundred years by people who never entered one.

Finishing Well · Enduring When You Are Weary
    3. The Power of Perseverance

An exposition of Hebrews 12 written plainly for people who are tired. Olford builds it on one keyword — consider — and three parallel divisions: consider God’s Son, consider God’s love, consider God’s purpose. Then he restates all three and tells you what to do with them. He holds two things together that are often torn apart: the outcome of the race is not in question, because we are united to the One who won it — and we are still in the race and must run it to the end. He is also unusually honest about weakness. Healing is not found by leaving the course, he says; but rest, recuperation, wise counsel, and the plain company of other believers are real needs, and the race is not the same thing as busyness.

The Word in Daily Life · Devotion Is a Life, Not a Half-Hour
    4. A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life

The book that shook John Wesley awake, and this is the chapter that does the shaking. Law’s thesis lands in the first two sentences and never lets go: devotion is neither private nor public prayer — devotion signifies a life given, or devoted, to God. The devout man is not the one who prays well; he is the one who makes all the parts of his common life parts of piety. Then Law does the thing he is famous for: he draws you a man. Julius is never absent from prayers — and spends the rest of his week by humour and chance. Law’s verdict is the sentence that has followed readers for three centuries: such men pray as Christians, and live as heathens. Read it slowly. It is not written to inform you.

The Besetting Sin · And the Friend Who Will Tell You the Truth
    5. How Can I Overcome Sin in My Christian Life?

A plain answer to the question every believer eventually asks in private. It names four resources and refuses to shortcut any of them: the Spirit, the Word, prayer, and the church. The framing is careful where careless writing usually goes wrong. Walking in the Spirit is described as choosing to follow His promptings rather than the flesh, and we are warned not to quench those promptings — He leads, and He can be resisted. Victory is progressive, not instant and not perfect this side of glory, and we persevere because He is faithful to His promises. The last resource is the one men skip: another believer who can pray with you, encourage you, and rebuke you. Set the Bible version to NKJV at the top of the page; the Spanish edition is written, not translated by machine.

Prayer · When Heaven Seems Slow
    6. With Christ in the School of Prayer

Murray wrote thirty-one lessons, one for each day of a month, for farming people who could reach church only rarely — which is to say he wrote for exactly the students this seminary serves. The whole book turns on one request: Lord, teach us to pray. The disciples had watched Him do it and concluded that this, of all things, was the thing to be taught. Lesson 16 takes the hardest case — the prayer that has not been answered yet, and the temptation to conclude that God is either unwilling or not listening. Murray will not let you set the question aside, and he will not answer it cheaply. If you have a prayer you have almost stopped praying, start here. The whole book is online at the link below; there are thirty more days after this one.

Stewardship · Faith Expressed in Possessions
    7. Christian Devotedness

Groves asks what Jesus’ commands about treasure, anxiety, generosity, and trust look like when Christians take them seriously. His conclusions are demanding, and students need not accept every application to profit from the question. Practical theology must eventually reach money, possessions, security, and the habits by which faith becomes visible.

    8. The Practice of the Presence of God

Brother Lawrence is outside the Baptist tradition and should be read with discernment, but his central practical question is valuable: can ordinary work be done consciously before God? He learned to seek God while washing dishes and carrying out routine assignments. The selection broadens spiritual practice beyond the quiet time into the whole day.

    9. A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life

Law exposes the contradiction of reserving religion for worship while arranging business, leisure, ambition, and relationships by another standard. His argument is the heart of practical theology: the same Lord who governs prayer also governs ordinary choices. Read critically, but let the chapter test whether Christian devotion has been confined to religious moments.

    10. Abide in Christ

Practical Christianity is not sustained by willpower alone. Murray begins with Christ’s command to abide and argues that the life that came to Christ for salvation must continue to draw strength from Christ for obedience. The reading supplies the theological center that keeps spiritual disciplines from becoming self-improvement.
