1. Taipolojia Ni Nini?1. What Is Typology?

Typology is the study of how persons, events, and institutions in the Old Testament foreshadow and point forward to Jesus Christ. As Augustine said, "The New Testament is hidden in the Old, and the Old is revealed in the New." Jesus Himself taught typology: on the road to Emmaus, "beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself" (Luke 24:27). The writers of the New Testament consistently read the Pentateuch as a book that prefigures Christ. The Passover lamb, the bronze serpent, the rock that gave water, Melchizedek, the tabernacle, the sacrifices — all were "shadows of things to come, but the substance is of Christ" (Colossians 2:17). This unit will trace the major types of Christ in the first five books of the Bible. The goal is not allegorical imagination — where any detail can mean anything — but careful, textually grounded patterns that the New Testament authors themselves identified.

So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ."

2. Adamu: Wa Kwanza na wa Mwisho2. Adam: The First and the Last

Paul explicitly identifies Adam as a "type" (Greek typos) of Christ in Romans 5:14: "Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come." The parallels: Adam brought sin and death to all humanity through one act of disobedience; Christ brought righteousness and life to all who believe through one act of obedience (Romans 5:18-19). Adam was the head of the old creation; Christ is the head of the new creation (1 Corinthians 15:45-47). Where Adam hid from God in shame, Christ walked openly to the cross. Where Adam blamed his wife, Christ loved His bride (the church) and gave Himself for her. For the pastor, this means that the story of Genesis 3 is not just ancient history — it is your story, and Christ's story. Every human being is born "in Adam." Only by being "in Christ" can we be made alive.

3. Melkizedeki: Mfalme wa Haki na wa Amani3. Melchizedek: King of Righteousness and Peace

Melchizedek appears suddenly in Genesis 14, then disappears. He is king of Salem (Jerusalem) and priest of God Most High. He brings bread and wine to Abraham after the battle, blesses him, and receives a tithe. His name means "King of Righteousness." Salem means "peace." So he is King of Righteousness and King of Peace. In Psalm 110, David prophesies that the Messiah would be "a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek" — not according to the order of Aaron (who came later and died). The author of Hebrews (chapters 5-7) unpacks this: Jesus is a priest like Melchizedek — not based on genealogy, not limited by death, both king and priest. Unlike Levitical priests who offered sacrifices for their own sins first, Melchizedek has no recorded beginning or end — a fitting type of Christ's eternal priesthood. The bread and wine he brought also anticipate the Lord's Supper.

Yesu, Kuhani wetu Mkuu, bado anakutana nasi mezani.Pastoral Application: When you serve communion, you are standing in a line that goes back to Melchizedek — a priest-king who served bread and wine to a weary warrior. Jesus, our great High Priest, still meets us at the table.

4. Isaka: Mwana Mpendwa Aliyetolewa4. Isaac: The Beloved Son Offered

Mahali tukio hili lilipotokea, Mlima Moria (Mwanzo 22:2), karibu hakika ndicho kilima kile kile ambapo Sulemani alijenga hekalu na ambapo Yesu alisulubiwa.Genesis 22 is one of the most powerful types of Christ in the Old Testament. Abraham is commanded to offer Isaac, "your son, your only son, whom you love." Isaac carries the wood for his own sacrifice up the mountain. He asks, "Where is the lamb?" Abraham replies, "God will provide for Himself the lamb." At the last moment, a ram is caught in the thicket, and Isaac is spared. Hebrews 11:19 tells us that Abraham believed God could raise Isaac from the dead. The parallels to Christ are striking: Jesus is the beloved Son of the Father (Matthew 3:17). He carried His cross (the wood) to Golgotha. He was sacrificed not as a ram caught in a thicket, but as the Lamb of God. And on the third day, He rose from the dead. The place where this happened, Mount Moriah (Genesis 22:2), is almost certainly the same hill where Solomon built the temple and where Jesus was crucified.

Yohana 1:29 (SUV): "Siku ya pili yake amwona Yesu anakuja kwake, akasema, 'Tazama, Mwana-kondoo wa Mungu, aichukuaye dhambi ya ulimwengu!'"John 1:29 (NKJV): "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, 'Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!'"

5. Mwana-kondoo wa Pasaka: Kuchukua Nafasi Yetu na Wokovu5. The Passover Lamb: Substitution and Salvation

The Passover narrative in Exodus 12 is the central saving event of the Old Testament, and it is explicitly a type of Christ. A lamb without blemish was slaughtered. Its blood was applied to the doorposts. When the angel of death saw the blood, he "passed over" that house. Paul writes, "Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us" (1 Corinthians 5:7). John the Baptist calls Jesus "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Peter says we were redeemed "with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot" (1 Peter 1:19). The details matter: the lamb was to be eaten with unleavened bread (purity) and bitter herbs (the bitterness of sin). Nothing was to be broken (John 19:36). The blood was applied, not just shed. For the pastor, the Passover teaches that salvation is not by good works or religious effort — it is by the blood of the Lamb applied by faith. You are not saved because you are a good Israelite; you are saved because you are under the blood.

6. Mwamba Uliowafuata: Kristo Alipigwa Mara Moja6. The Rock That Followed: Christ Struck Once

Hubiri kazi iliyokamilika. In Exodus 17, Moses struck the rock at Horeb, and water came out. In Numbers 20, God told Moses to speak to the rock, but in anger Moses struck it twice. The rock gave water both times, but Moses was judged. Paul reveals the mystery: "They drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:4). Why was Moses punished for striking the rock the second time? Because the rock was a type of Christ. Christ was struck once — at the cross. He does not need to be struck again. Hebrews 9:28 says, "Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many." When Moses struck the rock twice, he was misrepresenting the gospel — as if Christ needed to be crucified repeatedly. The water from the rock is the Holy Spirit, given to all who believe. For the pastor, this is a warning: do not preach a gospel that requires Jesus to suffer again. He died once for all. Preach the finished work.

7. Nyoka wa Shaba: Aliyeinuliwa kwa Ajili ya Uponyaji7. The Bronze Serpent: Lifted Up for Healing

Numbers 21 records that when fiery serpents bit the people, God told Moses to make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole. Anyone who looked at it lived. Jesus explicitly connects this to His own crucifixion: "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:14-15). The serpent is a strange symbol — it represents the curse (Genesis 3:14). Jesus became a curse for us (Galatians 3:13). The serpent on the pole was a curse turned into a cure. All the people had to do was look — not work, not strive, not make a pilgrimage — just look. That is the gospel. Faith is not a work; it is looking away from yourself to the One who was lifted up for you.

Isaya 45:22 (SUV): "Niangalieni mimi, mkaokolewe, enyi ncha zote za dunia; maana mimi ni Mungu, wala hapana mwingine."Isaiah 45:22 (NKJV): "Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other."

8. Maskani: Vivuli vya Mambo Halisi ya Mbinguni8. The Tabernacle: Shadows of Heavenly Realities

The tabernacle, with its sacrifices, priesthood, and furniture, is a vast typological system pointing to Christ. The writer of Hebrews explains that the earthly tabernacle was "a copy and shadow of the heavenly" (Hebrews 8:5). The bronze altar (sacrifice) points to the cross. The laver (washing) points to baptism and cleansing. The lampstand points to Christ the light of the world. The table of showbread points to Christ the bread of life. The altar of incense points to Christ's intercession. The veil separating the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies points to the barrier of sin. When Jesus died, the veil was torn — direct access is now open. The Ark of the Covenant, containing the law, points to Christ who fulfilled the law. The mercy seat (where the blood was sprinkled) points to propitiation — Christ is the place where God's justice and mercy meet. For the pastor, the tabernacle is not an obsolete building plan. It is a gospel drama in three dimensions. Every time you preach the cross, you are standing at the bronze altar. Every time you pray, you are standing at the incense altar. Every time you lead worship, you are lighting the lampstand.

9. Nabii Kama Musa9. The Prophet Like Moses

Musa aliwaombea Israeli; Yesu yu hai sikuzote ili atuombee (Waebrania 7:25). Deuteronomy 18:15-19 promises a prophet like Moses. Moses was a deliverer, lawgiver, and mediator. Jesus is all of these, but infinitely greater. Moses spoke with God face to face (Exodus 33:11); Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:14). Moses saw God's back; Jesus is God. Moses led Israel out of Egypt; Jesus leads His people out of slavery to sin. Moses gave the law from Mount Sinai; Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount. Moses interceded for Israel; Jesus lives to make intercession for us (Hebrews 7:25). Moses' face shone with reflected glory; Jesus is the radiance of God's glory (Hebrews 1:3). The people were afraid to hear God's voice directly; Jesus says, "My sheep hear My voice" (John 10:27). When Peter and Stephen quoted Deuteronomy 18 in the book of Acts, they were making a bold claim: Jesus is that Prophet. Reject Him, and you reject the One sent by God.

10. Mfumo wa Dhabihu: Mara Moja kwa Wote10. The Sacrificial System: Once for All

Imekwisha.Leviticus lays out five main offerings: burnt, grain, peace, sin, and guilt. Each foreshadows a different aspect of Christ's work. The burnt offering (total consumption) points to Christ's total devotion to the Father and the complete satisfaction of His sacrifice. The grain offering (firstfruits) points to Christ's sinless humanity and His resurrection as the firstfruits. The peace offering (shared meal) points to the fellowship with God that Christ's sacrifice secures. The sin offering (blood for atonement) points to Christ bearing our sin. The guilt offering (restitution plus sacrifice) points to Christ making right what sin broke. But the climax is the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16): two goats — one sacrificed (Christ dying in our place) and one scapegoat (Christ carrying our sins away). Hebrews 9-10 explains: if the blood of bulls and goats could take away sin, they would have stopped being offered. But they couldn't. Christ offered Himself once for all. The Old Testament sacrifices were not effective in themselves; they were effective by faith, looking forward to the cross. For the pastor, this means you never need to offer another sacrifice for sin. It is finished.

Hubiri Torati, nawe utamhubiri Kristo. Conclusion: The Pentateuch is not a collection of ancient Jewish laws and stories. It is a carefully crafted portrait of the Messiah. From the seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15) to the Passover lamb to the bronze serpent to the prophet like Moses — every page whispers His name. Jesus said, "If you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me" (John 5:46). Preach the Pentateuch, and you will preach Christ.
