Mwana-Kondoo Anazifungua MuhuriThe Lamb Opens the Seals
Chapter five ended with the Lamb taking the sealed scroll from the hand of God; now He begins to open it. This is the first thing to notice, and it governs the whole chapter: it is the Lamb who breaks the seals. The judgments that follow are not the work of blind fate or of an enemy out of control, but unfold only as the slain and risen Lamb opens them, one by one, under His sovereign hand. Christians have read the seals in different ways — some seeing them fulfilled in the first centuries, some across the long span of history, some as describing a final period still to come, and some as a picture of the recurring troubles of every age. The course has set those approaches side by side already and will not press one here. What every faithful reading shares is the comfort that nothing breaks loose upon the world except by the hand of the Lamb who loves His people and was found worthy to open the scroll of history.
Wapanda Farasi Wanne: Ushindi wa Kivita, Vita, Njaa, MautiThe Four Horsemen: Conquest, War, Famine, Death
As the first four seals are opened, four horses and their riders ride out. The first is a white horse whose rider holds a bow, is given a crown, and goes out "conquering and to conquer" (Revelation 6:2). This rider has been understood in two main ways: some take him as Christ or the advance of the gospel going out in triumph, while others take him as a spirit of conquest or a false christ, and the course leaves the matter open. The second is a red horse, whose rider is granted power to "take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another," and is given a great sword (Revelation 6:4) — this is war and slaughter. The third is a black horse, whose rider holds a pair of scales, and a voice prices a day's wheat at a day's wage — this is famine and crushing scarcity, while the oil and the wine are spared. The fourth is a pale, ashen horse, "and the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him" (Revelation 6:8). It is a haunting picture: Death rides the pale horse, and the grave comes close behind like a hearse, given power over a fourth of the earth to kill with sword, with hunger, with plague, and by the beasts of the earth. The four horsemen gather up the great recurring woes of a fallen world under the judgment of God.
Muhuri wa Tano: Kilio cha Wafia ImaniThe Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs
When the Lamb opens the fifth seal, the scene shifts from earth to the altar in heaven. "I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held" (Revelation 6:9). These are the martyrs, those put to death for their faithfulness to Christ, and they cry out with a loud voice, "How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?" (Revelation 6:10). It is not a cry of personal revenge but a longing that God would set the world right and vindicate His own. They are given white robes, the dress of purity and acceptance, and they are told to "rest a little longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed" (Revelation 6:11). The answer is tender but sobering: justice is certain, but not yet; more of God's servants will yet suffer, and the martyrs are to rest in God's timing until the full number is gathered.
Muhuri wa Sita: Siku Kuu ya HasiraThe Sixth Seal: The Great Day of Wrath
The sixth seal brings a violent shaking of the whole created order. There is a great earthquake; "the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood"; the stars of heaven fall like late figs shaken from a tree; the sky recedes "as a scroll when it is rolled up"; and every mountain and island is moved out of its place (Revelation 6:12-14). The reaction on earth is universal terror. Kings, great men, commanders, the rich and the mighty, and every slave and free man hide themselves in caves and among the rocks, and they cry to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?" (Revelation 6:16-17). Notice that even the wrath is the wrath of the Lamb; the same gentle Lamb who was slain is also the holy Judge whose day no sinner can face. The chapter ends on that desperate question, "Who is able to stand?" — and it is exactly that question that chapter seven steps in to answer.
Kipindi cha Katikati: Wale 144,000 Waliotiwa MuhuriThe Interlude: The 144,000 Sealed
Between the sixth seal and the seventh comes a pause, and in it John sees two scenes of God's protected people. In the first, four angels hold back the four winds of judgment until the servants of God are sealed. "And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed" (Revelation 7:4), twelve thousand from each of twelve tribes. To be sealed on the forehead is to be marked as God's own and kept safe through what is coming, just as Israel was marked before the plagues fell on Egypt. Who exactly the 144,000 are has been understood in several ways — some take them as literal Israel, some as the church as the true Israel of God, and some as a faithful remnant — and the number itself is read by some as exact and by others as a symbol of completeness, twelve times twelve times a thousand. The course presents these views fairly. The point all share is clear and comforting: before the storm of judgment fully breaks, God sets His seal upon His servants, and not one of them is overlooked.
Kipindi cha Katikati: Mkutano MkubwaThe Interlude: The Great Multitude
The second scene lifts John's eyes from the sealed servants on earth to a vast throng in heaven. "After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands" (Revelation 7:9). They cry out, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" (Revelation 7:10). When John asks who they are, an elder tells him, "These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb" (Revelation 7:14). Their robes are white not by their own effort but by the blood of the Lamb that cleanses from sin. And their future is glorious: they serve God day and night in His temple; they hunger and thirst no more; the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes (Revelation 7:15-17). This is the answer to the sixth seal's question. Who is able to stand? These are: the countless redeemed of every nation, washed in the blood of the Lamb, standing before the throne.
Muhuri wa Saba: Kimya MbinguniThe Seventh Seal: Silence in Heaven
After the long interlude, the Lamb opens the last seal. "When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour" (Revelation 8:1). After the thunder of the horsemen, the cry of the martyrs, the shaking of the sixth seal, and the great shouts of the multitude, heaven falls utterly still. The silence is full of awe and expectation, the hush before God's purposes move forward into the next great cycle of visions, for in that silence seven angels are given seven trumpets, which the next unit will take up. Read together, the seven seals teach a steadying truth. The judgments of history fall only as the Lamb opens them; the martyrs are heard and will be vindicated in God's time; God seals and secures His own before the storm; and the redeemed of every nation, washed in the Lamb's blood, stand at last before the throne. The world may be shaken to its foundations, but the Lamb holds the scroll, and His people are safe in His hand.
