Siku ya 1 — Hitaji la Wokovu na Kazi ya Neema yenye Sehemu TatuDay 1 — The Necessity of Salvation and the Threefold Work of Grace
The doctrine of salvation answers the most urgent question raised by the doctrine of sin: if humanity is fallen and separated from God, how can that relationship be restored? Salvation is not a human achievement. It is God's work on behalf of humanity. What man cannot accomplish, God provides through grace. At the same time, salvation is not merely a single moment in isolation. It is a comprehensive work that addresses the past, the present, and the future of the believer. It is both an event and a process, grounded in what Christ has done and applied through the life of the believer.
Scripture presents humanity as separated from God, not by circumstance, but by nature. Sin has affected every part of the human person. It has distorted the mind, disordered the will, and corrupted the affections. Left to itself, humanity does not move toward God, but away from Him. This is why salvation is necessary. It is not an optional doctrine reserved for religious reflection—it is the only answer to the human condition.
Ikiwa wokovu utatokea, lazima utoke nje yetu. Lazima utolewe na Mungu.Because of this, salvation cannot originate with man. What is broken at the level of nature cannot be repaired by effort, education, or moral reform. No accumulation of good works can undo guilt, and no discipline can reverse spiritual death. If salvation is to occur, it must come from outside of us. It must be provided by God.
Salvation, therefore, is not a human achievement. It is the work of God on behalf of humanity. What man cannot accomplish, God provides through grace.
This comprehensive nature of salvation is often described as the threefold work of grace. In justification, the believer is saved from the penalty of sin (past). In sanctification, the believer is being saved from the power of sin (present). In glorification, the believer will be saved from the presence of sin (future). These are not separate salvations, but one unified work of God. Together they show that salvation is not partial—it is complete.
Mpangilio wa Wokovu — Jinsi Neema Inavyomfikia Mwenye DhambiThe Order of Salvation — How Grace Reaches the Sinner
If salvation is wholly the work of God's grace, Scripture also shows grace reaching the sinner in a discernible order. Salvation is not a single, undivided act but a sequence of saving works, each flowing from the one before. Seeing this order guards us from two errors: treating salvation as a vague feeling, and treating it as a ladder of human steps to climb. From first to last the order magnifies grace, for every link is God's gift—yet at its center stands the response He requires of us.
The order begins not with us but with God's initiative in the gospel. The good news of Christ crucified and risen is proclaimed and offered freely to all who hear. God "desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:4), and the invitation is genuine: "whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). Salvation is set in motion by a God who calls.
Yet the sinner, left to himself, will not come. Sin has so darkened the mind and bound the will that no one seeks God on his own. So grace must go before—drawing, convicting, and awakening the heart. "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him" (John 6:44). This drawing grace does not drag a man against his will; it opens blind eyes and frees a bound will, so that he is made able to respond. The first movement is always God's.
Hata hivyo, ndiyo sharti ambalo Mungu Mwenyewe ameliweka: "Mwamini Bwana Yesu, nawe utaokoka" (Matendo 16:31).The response God asks is faith and repentance, and here is the hinge on which the whole order turns. Faith is the empty hand that receives Christ; repentance is the turning of the heart from sin to God. Scripture makes this response indispensable: "without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6). Faith adds nothing to the cross and earns nothing from God—it simply lays hold of the Christ who is offered. Yet it is the condition God Himself has set: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31).
At this point sincere believers have long differed over a single question: which comes first, the new birth or faith? Some hold that, because the sinner is spiritually dead, God must first regenerate him—make him alive—before he is able to believe, so that the new birth precedes and produces faith. Others hold that faith is the God-appointed condition He requires and rewards, so that the new birth follows upon believing: "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life" (John 3:36). Both sides confess that salvation is by grace and received through faith in Christ; they differ only on the order of these two works, and neither view should be branded a heresy. The student should know where godly Christians stand and weigh the Scriptures for himself.
To everyone who believes, God grants at once a cluster of saving gifts. He regenerates, imparting new spiritual life—the new birth. He justifies, declaring the believer righteous in Christ, his sins forgiven and Christ's righteousness reckoned to him (Romans 5:1). He adopts, receiving him as a son into the family of God (John 1:12; Galatians 4:5). And He gives the indwelling Spirit, who seals the believer as God's own possession (Ephesians 1:13). These are not rewards earned by stages but gifts received together in the moment of faith.
Kuhesabiwa haki ni kazi ya kitambo kimoja; utakaso ni kazi ya maisha yote—mada tutakayoigeukia katika Siku ya 3.From that new beginning unfolds the lifelong work of sanctification, as the Spirit gradually conforms the believer to the likeness of Christ, putting sin to death and bringing forth holiness. Justification is the work of a moment; sanctification is the work of a lifetime—the theme to which we turn in Day 3.
Scripture gives the believer strong assurance: the sealing of the Spirit, the intercession of Christ, and the promise that "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it" (Philippians 1:6). Yet here, too, faithful Christians have differed. Some understand that the one truly born of God is eternally kept and can never finally be lost: "they shall never perish, neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand" (John 10:28). Others take the Bible's warnings against falling away with full seriousness and hold that a believer must continue in faith to the end (Hebrews 3:14). This course does not settle the question for you; it sets the texts of assurance and the texts of warning side by side and calls every believer to persevere in Christ.
The order reaches its end in glorification, when the believer is raised and made perfectly like Christ, freed at last from the very presence of sin—the subject of Day 4. From the first call of the gospel to the final glory, salvation is one unbroken work of grace: begun by God, received by faith, and finished by God. To Him alone belongs the praise.
Siku ya 2 — Picha Sita za WokovuDay 2 — The Six Images of Salvation
The first stage of salvation—what we call conversion—is strictly an Act of God. We cannot buy, earn, or deserve it; it is a free gift. Scripture uses six powerful metaphors to describe the miracle of conversion. Each metaphor places us in a different setting and reveals a different aspect of what Christ has done for us and what happens in the life of the believer.
Maisha mapya yanaanza. Tabia mpya inatolewa. Kama vile mtoto mchanga hafanyi chochote katika kuzaliwa kwake kimwili, mwenye dhambi pia hafanyi chochote hapa, Roho anapompulizia uzima yeye aliyekufa kiroho.1. Regeneration (The Birthing Room): The setting is a birthing room. The first birth is physical. The second birth is spiritual. This new birth is by the Holy Spirit. The believer is born again—not merely improved, but made new. A new life begins. A new nature is given. Just as a baby is passive in its physical birth, the sinner is passive here as the Spirit breathes life into the spiritually dead.
Kilichovunjika kinarejeshwa. Amani inachukua nafasi ya uadui. Mwamini hayuko tena mbali, bali amesogezwa karibu.2. Reconciliation (The Broken Relationship): The setting is a broken relationship, like a marriage where the couple has divorced and been estranged. Humanity is not naturally in friendship with God, but in opposition. Scripture describes us as being at enmity with Him. The relationship is broken and out of alignment. It is as though it had been completely severed. Through Christ, that separation is removed. What was broken is restored. Peace replaces hostility. The believer is no longer distant, but brought near.
Important theological note: In the Bible, we are always reconciled to God, and God is never said to be reconciled to us. Why? Scripture does speak of God's wrath against sin (Romans 1:18) and of Christ's death as a propitiation — the turning away of that righteous wrath (Romans 3:25; 1 John 2:2). So it is not that God was ever fickle or that His holy opposition to sin is unreal. But God's wrath is never petty hostility; it is the settled response of His holiness to sin, and He Himself, in love, provided the propitiation that satisfies it. We, by contrast, were the ones running — alienated, hostile in our minds toward Him (Colossians 1:21). That is why the biblical language is always that we are reconciled to God, not that God is reconciled to us: God's character and holy purpose do not change, but our standing before Him does, through Christ.
Justification (The Courtroom): The setting is a courtroom. God is the judge. Humanity stands guilty before Him. The evidence is clear, and the verdict is certain. There is no defense that can be offered and no righteousness that can be presented. But in this courtroom, Jesus Christ stands as the defense attorney. He does not argue that we are innocent. He declares that the penalty has already been paid—paid by His own blood. Because of this, the judge declares the guilty sinner to be righteous. This is justification. It is not a process, but a declaration. It happens once and is complete. The sentence has been satisfied. The case is closed. The believer leaves the courtroom not on probation, but fully accepted.
Picha Sita za Wokovu (inaendelea)The Six Images of Salvation (continued)
Kwa sababu gharama imelipwa, mwamini si mtumwa tena. Uhuru umenunuliwa. Minyororo ya dhambi, mauti, na jehanamu imevunjwa.4. Redemption (The Slave Market): The setting is a slave market. Humanity is in bondage to sin, death, and hell. We are chained by sin, unable to free ourselves. There is no ability to free ourselves. Christ enters and pays the price to set us free. The cost is His own life. Because the price has been paid, the believer is no longer a slave. Freedom has been purchased. The chains of sin, death, and hell have been broken.
Conversion (The Road): The setting is a road. A person is walking in one direction—away from God. At a certain point, that person stops, turns, and begins walking in the opposite direction. This is not a small adjustment. It is a complete turning. The traveler on a highway makes a definitive U-turn. This turning involves two elements: Repentance (turning from sin) and Faith (turning toward God). This is the narrow way, not the broad way.
Adoption (The Family Court): The setting is a family court. A spiritual orphan is legally taken into God's family, receiving the full rights and inheritance of a child. The believer is no longer a stranger or an outsider but a son or daughter of God.
Tunachoweza kufanya ni kuipokea tu.Together, these images show that salvation is complete. Christ deals with guilt, bondage, separation, direction, nature, and orphanhood. Because the penalty of sin has been fully dealt with, the believer does not work toward acceptance, but from acceptance. The first stage of salvation is 100% God's work. All we can do is receive it.
Siku ya 3 — Utakaso: Kuokolewa kutoka katika Nguvu ya DhambiDay 3 — Sanctification: Being Saved from the Power of Sin
If justification answers the problem of guilt, sanctification addresses the ongoing reality of sin within the believer. Though the penalty of sin has been removed, its influence is still present. The believer is no longer under condemnation, but is not yet fully free from the struggle with sin.
Sanctification is the process of becoming like Christ. It is the unfolding of the new life that has already been given. The believer now engages actively in obedience—resisting sin, pursuing righteousness, and growing in holiness. God works in the believer, and the believer responds. Growth is expected—not perfection, but direction. Not completion, but progress. The goal is Christlikeness.
The Christian life is not a matter of trying harder in our own strength. It is a matter of walking in the Spirit—living in daily dependence upon His power and guidance. When we walk in the Spirit, we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). This walk requires surrender, prayer, and obedience to the Word. The Spirit does not force us; He invites us to yield. The more we yield, the more He produces His fruit and manifests His power through us.
Siku ya 4 — Kutukuzwa: Kuokolewa kutoka katika Uwepo wa DhambiDay 4 — Glorification: Saved from the Presence of Sin
Kutukuzwa kunazungumzia siku ambayo hilo halitakuwa kweli tena. While salvation has already dealt with the penalty of sin and is presently dealing with its power, it has not yet reached its final stage. The believer still lives in a world affected by sin and still experiences its presence. Glorification speaks to the day when that will no longer be true.
Mwili unabadilishwa. Uhusiano na Mungu unarejeshwa kikamilifu. Wakati huu ujao ni wa hakika.Glorification is the final and complete stage of salvation. It is the moment when the work God has begun is brought to its full conclusion. In glorification, the presence of sin is removed entirely. There will be no more struggle, no more temptation, and no more internal conflict. The body is transformed. The relationship with God is fully restored. This future is certain.
Kiini cha KutukuzwaThe Heart of Glorification
The most significant element of glorification is not merely the change in our surroundings, but the change in our nature. We shall be made perfect in truth. As the Apostle John writes: "We shall see Him as He is, and we shall be like Him" (1 John 3:2). How God accomplishes this remains one of the great mysteries of the faith. It is the moment where the "germ" of sin is finally and completely eradicated, and we are brought into total alignment with the truth of God.
Siku ya 5 — Neema, Imani, na Maisha YaliyobadilishwaDay 5 — Grace, Faith, and the Transformed Life
Salvation is grounded in grace. Grace is the unearned favor of God toward those who deserve the opposite. It is not a reward for effort, nor a response to human worthiness. It is given freely, not because of what humanity has done, but because of who God is. If grace is misunderstood, the entire doctrine of salvation is distorted.
Inapokea kile ambacho neema inatoa ndani ya Kristo.Faith is the means by which this grace is received. Faith is not merely agreement with certain truths, nor is it a vague sense of belief. Faith is personal trust in Jesus Christ. It does not earn salvation. It receives what grace provides in Christ.
The result of salvation is a transformed life. It produces humility because it is not earned. It produces assurance because it rests on God's work. It produces transformation because it is real. The believer does not live to achieve salvation, but from the reality of having received it. The Christian life is not an attempt to secure God's favor, but the outworking of a relationship already established by grace.
This guards against two common errors. On one hand, it prevents legalism—the idea that salvation must be maintained through effort. On the other hand, it prevents indifference—the idea that salvation produces no real change. The gospel rejects both. The believer lives from grace, not for grace.
The Doctrine of Salvation teaches us that God has done for us what we could never do for ourselves. In justification, He declares us righteous. In sanctification, He makes us holy. In glorification, He will make us perfect. All of this is by grace, received through faith, and results in a transformed life. Salvation is not a reward for the righteous but a gift for the guilty. To receive it is to receive Christ. To receive Christ is to receive eternal life. Therefore, we boast not in ourselves, but in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
