The Certificate track answers the multiple choice. The Associate adds the fill-in-the-blank questions; M.Div. and Th.M. add those and the short-answer questions. 90% of each part is required to pass.

Look at each principle and at the practical ways it shows up in growing churches.

The Process Principle. Church growth is a process, not an event. Many churches are event-oriented when they ought to be process-oriented, lurching from one big push to the next and wondering why nothing lasts. A process must be planned. It requires clear, measurable goals, honest evaluation, and the flexibility to adjust along the way. Hear this plainly: no single program will ever accomplish church growth. The revival, the campaign, the new curriculum — each may serve the process, but none is the process. Growth is a road walked steadily, not a door kicked open once.

The Pyramid Principle. To raise the height of a ministry, you must first widen its base. The great Mayan pyramids grew taller only by being enlarged at the bottom; pile stone on a base too narrow and the whole thing topples. So it is with a church. Where there is no proper structure underneath — no leadership, no nurture, no teaching, no assimilation — added numbers only make the church top-heavy and unstable. Some churches are high in baptisms but weak in actual growth, because they keep adding at the top without ever broadening the base that must carry the weight. Balance is everything. Win them, yes — but build the base that can hold them.

The Receptivity Principle. Win the winnable while they are winnable. Resources are limited — time, workers, money — and the principle says to invest them where the harvest is ripe, not where the ground is frozen. People are most open to the gospel when they are already in motion: those in transition, the newly arrived, the forgotten, the burdened, the people whom change has shaken loose from their old certainties. They are most receptive precisely because they are most open to change. Some churches are not growing for one simple reason — they are not harvesting the fields that are already white. And the harvest compounds: the more lives you touch, the more receptive a community becomes, until reaching people becomes the very reputation that draws more.

The New Unit Principle. New units grow faster than old ones — always. New churches, new classes, new groups, new ministries, new spaces, new leadership: the new thing, almost without exception, grows faster than the established thing beside it. Watch the spruce trees in the yard. Every year they put on a little growth, and the growth is always at the ends — the bright new tips, a different color from the old wood. Life pushes outward, into the new. The studies bear it out: combine two classes and the count drops; start a new class and within a year it has grown back to the size of the original. This is the most reliable engine of growth there is, and we will build a whole unit on what it now means for planting.

The Homogeneous Principle. People like to be with people like themselves, and groups of people with much in common are more likely to grow. We associate most naturally with those to whom we already belong — by language, background, season of life, and culture. The principle, in its classic form, put it sharply: people should not have to cross unnecessary barriers to come to Christ. Where the gospel is kept clear of needless cultural hurdles, people come more freely.

The Leadership Principle. Leadership is one of the most vital qualities of a growing church. The ability to see a vision and to inspire others to follow it is among the surest keys to growth. The pastors of growing churches tend to have longevity — they stay — and they are seldom novices; they have learned the ground over time. A church will rarely rise above the vision and perseverance of the one called to lead it. We will return to this, both its power and its peril, in the unit on pastoral leadership.

Dónde Estamos Ahora (2026)Where We Are Now (2026)

Most of these six have not aged a day. The Process principle is, if anything, more urgent now that the church has rediscovered discipleship as a slow road and not a single decision. Receptivity has a new and vast field in our day: the great company of the formerly churched, who left without much conviction and remain unusually open to a gracious invitation home. And the New Unit principle has been so thoroughly vindicated that the entire field now treats planting new congregations as the most dependable form of growth there is — the bright tips on the spruce, multiplied across a whole movement. One caution the years have added: a new site is not magic. Opening a second location is a way for a healthy, growing church to multiply; it has never been a cure for a church that is not growing where it already stands.

The principle that must now be handled with great care is the Homogeneous one. In its day it was a clear-eyed observation: people come most readily to Christ among their own kind, without being made to leap cultural walls first. That much remains simply true, and any honest church planter still reckons with it. But three decades of reflection have raised a hard and serious question, and a course taught across denominations must put it on the table rather than hide it. The challenge runs like this: a principle meant only to lower needless barriers can quietly harden into a strategy that baptizes our divisions — that builds churches comfortably segregated by race and class because that is what grows fastest, and calls the comfort a method. Against that stands the vision of Revelation 7, where the redeemed are gathered from every nation and tribe and people and tongue before one throne; and the plain fact that the gospel’s power is most visible exactly where it does what nothing else can — reconcile peoples who had no business sitting at the same table. The early church’s miracle was Jew and Gentile in one body; ought the modern church to settle for less in the name of growth?

I will not resolve that question here, because it is finally a matter of conviction and theology, and the author must own it. What can be said without dispute is this: whatever we make of the Homogeneous Principle as a strategy, it can never be allowed to become a theology — as though heaven itself were segregated. People may indeed gather most easily among their own; but the Spirit who fell at Pentecost reversed Babel and made one understanding people out of many tongues, and He has lost none of His power to do it still.

First, true growth requires the presence of the Holy Spirit. Every principle in this unit is sound, but each one is a mechanic, and mechanics alone can be worked by a clever man with no help from heaven. A pastor can become the center of a popularity contest and gather a crowd, and yet the Spirit may be in none of it; that is not church growth, it is a following. Remember what this whole catalog has taught: it is the Spirit who convicts, who draws, who gives the increase. "Now he who plants and he who waters are one... but God gave the increase" (1 Corinthians 3:6-8). Work the methods, yes — but pray for the Spirit, or you will only build a bigger crowd around yourself.

Second, growth comes through the pastor's personal contact. I have rarely seen a church grow where the pastor would not get out among the people and know them. A pastor must have a real relationship with his people — not from the platform only, but face to face: visiting them, sitting down over coffee, having them out to dinner. In time this must spread to the whole body, for the people will reach people the pastor never could; yet the pastor is the most visible part of it, and the flock will love and reach others about as far as they have seen him do it himself.

Third, the most genuine growth is by conversion. There is a kind of growth that only moves believers from one church to another, and a man can build himself a sizable congregation that way without a single soul being saved. But mark this well: if all you have done is gather the already-converted under your own roof, you have built up your church and done nothing for the Kingdom of God. The growth heaven counts is the growth of the new birth — the lost found, the dead made alive. Aim at that, and you will be building the Kingdom and not merely your own house.
