Día 1 — ¿Por qué predicar la Iglesia?Day 1 — Why Preach the Church?
Of all the doctrines, this is the one your hearers think they already understand — and most of them have it wrong. Ask the average person what the church is and you will hear “the building on the corner,” or “the service I attend,” or “the club I belong to.” The preacher’s task is to replace those small pictures with the New Testament’s great one: the church is the people of God, the body of Christ, the temple of the Spirit.
So the pastoral aim is to move hearers from attending to belonging, and from belonging to mission. A sermon on the church should leave a person no longer asking “what do I get from this service?” but “who am I as part of this people, and what am I for?”
Día 2 — El fundamento doctrinal (breve; vea Teología Sistemática, Unidad 8)Day 2 — The Doctrinal Backbone (lean; see Systematic Theology Unit 8)
Hold the doctrine before shaping it. Keep it compressed and point students to ST Unit 8 for the full treatment. The nature of the church. The church is not a building but the people God has called out: the people of God, the body of Christ with Christ as Head, and the temple indwelt by the Spirit. It is both universal (all believers of all ages) and local (the gathered congregation). The mission of the church. Three tasks run through the New Testament: worship toward God, edification of one another, and evangelism toward the world — the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19–20. The ordinances. Two were given by Christ: baptism, which pictures union with Him in death and resurrection (Romans 6:3–4), and the Lord’s Supper, which proclaims His death until He comes (1 Corinthians 11:26). The course keeps its ecclesiology deliberately non-denominational, naming what all believers share rather than what divides them.
Here is the other road from Unit 2: start inside one text and let its own clauses become the points. This is the textual method opening naturally into a topical naming of ideas. The worked example is adapted from Dr. Cook’s sermon “The Identity of the Gathered.”
Tema: quién es la iglesia. Interrogativo: “¿Cómo llama Dios a su pueblo reunido?” Palabra clave: identidades. Los cuatro puntos son las cuatro cláusulas del solo versículo, cada una un nombre que Dios da a su pueblo:Subject: who the church is. Interrogative: “What does God call His gathered people?” Keyword: identities. The four points are the four clauses of the one verse, each a name God gives His people:
| Punto (palabra clave: identidades)Point (keyword: identities) | Cláusula de 1 Pedro 2:9Clause of 1 Peter 2:9 |
|---|---|
A chosen generation — a people God chose for Himself | "linaje escogido""a chosen generation" |
| 2. Real sacerdocio — cada creyente tiene acceso y ministerio2. A royal priesthood — every believer has access and a ministry | "real sacerdocio""a royal priesthood" |
| 3. Nación santa — un pueblo apartado para Dios3. A holy nation — a people set apart for God | "nación santa""a holy nation" |
| 4. Pueblo adquirido — la posesión atesorada de Dios4. His own special people — God’s treasured possession | "pueblo adquirido""His own special people" |
Take each name in turn, for each tells the gathered people something true about who they are.
1. Linaje escogido. A chosen generation. Chosen, elected, predestined — these are good biblical words, and we will not flinch from them. But we must preach them the way Scripture does. Scripture never once says God chose anyone for hell; it says the very opposite — God is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). He does not look down upon a child in the womb and decree its damnation. He foreknows all things, yes — but foreknowledge is not the same as predestining a soul to be lost. And the best-known verse in all the Bible holds the truth out to everyone: “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). The door stands open to whoever will come, and when one comes, the angels of heaven rejoice (Luke 15:10). And here is why this matters for the gathered church: take election so far that every soul is settled beyond recall, and you cut the nerve of missions — for why carry the gospel across the world if no one’s eternity can turn on the hearing of it? That is the very logic that once told a young William Carey to sit down, that God would save the heathen without his help. Carey would not sit down, and neither must we. We preach a real choosing by a sovereign God and a real “whosoever,” because the gospel is for the world. So preach election as the warm truth it is — that God has chosen a people for Himself — and never as a cold decree that bolts the door God has thrown open.
2. Real sacerdocio. A royal priesthood. This identity is developed in full below as the worked example — every believer brought near, with direct access to God and a real ministry to others, and no spiritual middle-man standing between the soul and the Father.
A holy nation. The word holy means set apart. These people are a nation within the nations, citizens of a kingdom not of this world, living under a different law and a different King. They are in the world but not of it — not better than their neighbors by nature, but claimed and set apart by God for His own purposes. A church that looks exactly like the world around it has forgotten this name; the gathered people are meant to be visibly different, not in pride but in holiness.
4. Pueblo adquirido. His own special people. The older word is peculiar — not strange, but treasured, a personal possession a king keeps for himself. Of all that God owns — and He owns everything — He calls His people His treasure. The hearer who has felt unwanted his whole life is told the astonishing thing: the God of heaven counts him among His prized possessions, purchased at the price of His Son’s own blood and kept as His own forever.
And the verse supplies its own conclusion. The closing clause — “that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you” — turns identity into mission. Who the church is drives what the church is for.
Día 4 — Desarrollando un punto (E-A-I) y un banco de ilustracionesDay 4 — Developing a Point (E-A-I) and an Illustration Bank
He aquí el Punto 2, el real sacerdocio, desarrollado por completo:Here is Point 2, the royal priesthood, developed in full:
Las otras tres identidades se desarrollan igual. Las ilustraciones para la iglesia abundan — use el banco:The other three identities are developed the same way. Illustrations for the church are plentiful — use the bank:
Día 5 — Notas de oficio y resumenDay 5 — Craft Notes and Summary
Two cautions. Do not preach an organizational chart. The temptation is to spend the sermon on church government, committees, and structures; those have their place, but a sermon on the church should send people away knowing who they are, not how the bylaws read. Preach toward belonging and serving. Because identity drives mission, the natural arc of a church sermon is an invitation to stop spectating: to belong to the people, take up the priesthood, and join the work. That is the response the text itself reaches for.
So Unit 9 showed the second road of the method: a textual sermon that begins inside one verse and lets its clauses become the points, naming the church’s identities and ending where the verse ends — in mission. Unit 10 brings the course home with the doctrine of Last Things.
