1. El Salmo de la Palabra1. The Psalm of the Word

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible — one hundred and seventy-six verses, arranged as an acrostic poem in twenty-two sections, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. And almost every single verse mentions the Word of God under one of its many names: the law, the testimonies, the precepts, the statutes, the commandments, the judgments, the word. There are two great psalms of the Word, Psalm 19 and Psalm 119, and this one is the great anthem of a believer who has fallen in love with the Scriptures. We live in a confusing world, and sometimes we do not know which way to turn. The good news of Psalm 119 is that God has answers, and they are often found in His Word.

When we speak of the "Word of God," we should remember that the phrase carries more than one meaning. There is the prophetic Word of God — the message God spoke through His prophets. There is the living Word of God — the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, who is called the Word made flesh. And there is the written Word of God — the Bible, the book we hold in our hands. All three are God speaking, and Psalm 119 teaches us to treasure that speaking with our whole heart.

2. Dónde se Halla la Sabiduría2. Where Wisdom Is Found

King Solomon, when God offered him anything he wished, asked for wisdom — wisdom that came from God. That is still the great need. And there are three places where God's wisdom comes to us. The first is through prayer. James 1:5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him." Many times when we pray, God grants a quiet sense of rightness about the way forward.

The second place wisdom comes is through godly counsel. We see this when Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, watched Moses judging the people who came to him all day long — alone — until he was overwhelmed by the needs of others. Jethro gave him wise counsel: appoint God-honoring men as judges to help carry the load (Exodus 18:13-27). That counsel let Moses use the gifts of others for the service of many, rather than trying to manage everything himself. Many times in life we seek wisdom from godly men and women, and almost immediately we know when it is coming from the Lord — because it sounds like Jesus. The third and most critical place, as we will see, is the written Word itself.

3. La Lámpara y la Lumbrera3. The Lamp and the Light

Salmo 119:105 (RVG): "Lámpara es a mis pies tu palabra, y lumbrera a mi camino."Psalm 119:105 (NKJV): "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

But the most critical piece of wisdom comes from the written Word of God, the Bible. It is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path — light enough for the next step, and light enough for the whole journey. The world tries every other path to satisfaction and comes up empty, but the Word of God has guided pilgrims home for thousands of years.

Consider the ward sister in a children's hospital in England who had found life, as she herself said, futile and meaningless. She had waded through book after book and labored through philosophy after philosophy trying to find satisfaction. She had never tried the Bible, because a friend had convinced her with subtle arguments that it could not be true. One day a visitor came to the ward and left a supply of Gospels. She read a copy of John's Gospel, and she believed. "I listened to that voice," she said, "and heard the truth, and found my Savior." The lamp had been within her reach the whole time.

4. Guardada en el Corazón4. Hidden in the Heart

Salmo 119:11 (RVG): "En mi corazón he guardado tus dichos, para no pecar contra ti."Psalm 119:11 (NKJV): "Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You."

Notice where the Word is stored: not merely on a shelf, but in the heart. When the Word is hidden in the heart, it becomes a guard against sin and a treasure that no enemy can confiscate. People may take away your Bible, but they cannot reach into your heart and remove what you have hidden there.

The Bible That Could Not Be Burned: A boy was ordered by his father to stop reading his Bible, but he slipped it aside and read it anyway despite his father's objections. One day the father caught him, snatched the Bible away, and threw it into the fire. But he noticed the boy was smiling. "Why are you smiling?" he demanded. The boy answered, "I was just thinking that you cannot burn this in here" — and he pointed to his heart. That is the one place the Word is truly safe.

5. La Palabra que Sobrevive a sus Enemigos5. The Word That Outlasts Its Enemies

Salmo 119:89 (RVG): "Para siempre, oh Jehová, permanece tu palabra en los cielos."Psalm 119:89 (NKJV): "Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven."

The Word of God has outlasted every ruler who ever tried to destroy it. Henry V of England once considered Bible reading a crime and passed a law that threatened death or loss of property to anyone caught reading a Bible. But his decrees could not shorten the life of the Scriptures by one minute or lighten their weight by one ounce. The Bible has traveled more roads, been spoken in more languages, and knocked at more doors than any other book ever written. The Scripture is holy; it is altogether different from any other book, because it is the living Word of the living God, and it is settled forever in heaven.

6. La Palabra que No Será Silenciada6. The Word That Will Not Be Silenced

No ardía. Two Men and One Book: A man in Brazil bought a New Testament and took it home to burn. He found the fire had gone out, so he deliberately lit it again and flung the New Testament on the flames. It would not burn. He opened the pages to make it catch more easily, and it fell open to the Sermon on the Mount. He glanced at the words as the flames worked at the edges — and his mind was caught. He took the book back out, read on through the night, forgetting all time until the dawn broke, and then stood up and declared, "I believe." Another man, in Chile, found a few water-stained pages of a book washed up on the seashore after an earthquake and tidal wave. He read them and never rested until he had obtained the rest of the Bible. He not only became a Christian; he devoted the rest of his life to carrying the Scriptures into the forgotten villages of northern Chile.

You cannot burn this Book out of the world, and you cannot wash it away. It has a life of its own, because it is the Word of the One who lives forever.

7. El Amor a la Ley7. The Love of the Law

Salmo 119:97 (RVG): "¡Oh, cuánto amo yo tu ley! Todo el día es ella mi meditación."Psalm 119:97 (NKJV): "Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day."

The psalmist does not merely study the Word or obey it from duty — he loves it. It is his meditation all the day, the thing his mind returns to when it is free to go where it pleases. This is the difference between religion as a burden and religion as a delight. When you truly love someone, you want to hear their voice, you turn their words over in your mind, you keep their letters. The believer who loves God loves to hear Him speak, and God speaks in His Word. To meditate on the law all the day is simply to keep company with the God who wrote it.

8. Honestos Delante de Dios8. Honest Before God

All the psalms are designed to teach us to do one thing: to worship. They reflect every human emotion, but they do so in a distinct and important way — they are emotions seen in relationship to God. Every psalm is written in the presence of God, and so this whole book teaches us how to be honest before Him. If you have a problem, tell God about it. Do not hide it, do not cover it up, and above all do not get pious and try to smooth it over. If you are angry, say so. If you are resentful, bring it out. If you are happy, express it. That is what worship is: a heart's honesty in the presence of God. As Jesus told the woman at the well, "The true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth," and that is the kind of worshiper God is seeking.

Think of the old story of a converted miser, long known as a stingy man. After his conversion a neighbor suffered a serious loss, and the former miser's first thought was, "They need help; I will take them a ham from my smokehouse." But on the way his old nature whispered, "Why a whole ham? Half a ham will be plenty." He debated it the whole way. Then he remembered what he had resolved in the presence of God — that by grace he would stand against the old evil whenever it asserted itself. When the tempter kept whispering, "Give him half," the old man finally said, "Look, Satan, if you don't pipe down, I'll give him the whole smokehouse." That is what grace does. Where sin abounds, grace abounds much more — and that is the purpose of the psalms: to bring us to grace, and to teach us to love the God who speaks to us in His Word.
