I. La predicación como adoraciónI. Preaching as Worship

We come now to the elements that fill the heart of the service. The first is preaching, and we must understand from the start that preaching is itself an act of worship, not merely instruction. When the word of God is proclaimed, God speaks to His people and they respond. This is why preaching stands at the center of Protestant worship. We saw in Unit 4 that the Reformers moved the pulpit to the center of the sanctuary; that was a confession that the preached Word, not the consecrated host, is the central act of worship. The sermon is prepared from Scripture through careful study and delivered prayerfully, aimed not merely at informing the people but at moving the whole person, the mind, the heart, and the will.

II. La ofrenda y los anunciosII. The Offering and the Announcements

The offering is an act of worship and dedication, not merely fundraising. In it we dedicate our resources to God, returning to Him a portion of what He first gave us. It belongs to the mood of dedication that we studied in Unit 5, and it should be presented as worship, an act of giving to God, rather than as the collection of money to pay the bills. The way the offering is led teaches the people what it means.

Announcements are a different matter. They should be brief and handled so that they do not detract from worship. The danger is that announcements swell to fill more time than they deserve and break the mood of worship. Recall the sober comparison from Unit 7: the reading of Scripture is far more important than the announcements, yet often takes less time. Keep announcements minimal, place them well, and consider printing them rather than letting them consume the worship hour. Do not let the trivial crowd out the eternal.

III. La invitación: la parte más importanteIII. The Invitation: The Most Important Part

Now we come to what I consider the most important part of the entire service: the invitation. It is the most important because it is the moment of response, the point at which people respond to what God has said. Everything else in the service has prepared the way; the invitation is the climax. Here the Spirit moves on souls and people make decisions for Christ. Preaching that issues no call to respond is incomplete; the invitation gives the hearer the chance to do something about what he has heard. The relationship between the preached word and the invitation is call and response, the word calls, and the invitation is where the answer is made.

The invitation connects directly to the mood of dedication. We noted in Unit 5 that dedication comes in two places. In the offering we dedicate our resources; in the invitation we dedicate ourselves. The invitation is the place where the worshipper gives himself back to God, and so it is the personal climax of the whole service.

IV. Dar bien una invitaciónIV. Giving an Invitation Well

Sea paciente, sea claro, y siga Su dirección.How is an invitation given well? First, give it clearly, so people know exactly how they may respond. Second, be sensitive to the Spirit and never rush it. I have seen an invitation last an hour and a half because the Spirit was moving, and it would have been a sin to cut it short. Third, guide people without manipulating them, no high-pressure tactics, no emotional manipulation, just a clear and patient call to respond. The Spirit, not the clock, governs the invitation. Be patient, be clear, and follow His leading.

Each of these elements has its proper place in the flow of the service. Preaching proclaims the word and moves the people; the offering dedicates their resources; the announcements stay brief and out of the way; and the invitation forms the climax of response. The preacher's task is to guard the service so that the lesser elements never crowd out the most important parts, the word preached and the response given. Protect what matters most.
