Tunachohifadhi.

Utangulizi — Mchungaji MlimaniIntroduction — The Shepherd on the Hillside

Picture a shepherd on a rocky hillside at dusk. The sheep are scattered — some drifting toward a cliff, some tangled in thorns, a few too weak to keep up. He does not stand at a distance and shout instructions. He walks in among them. He knows their voices and they know his. He carries the weak ones. And he himself is not the owner of the flock; he works for the One who owns it, and one day that Owner will return and ask, "How have you cared for what is Mine?" That picture is not poetry. It is the plain job description of every pastor and every leader in the church of God. In Unit 1 we saw that leadership is a calling carried out in humility. Now we go deeper into what the leader actually is: an undershepherd and a steward, two words that, once you understand them, will govern the rest of your ministry.

Si Mmiliki — Neno "Chini"Not the Owner — The Word "Under"

Kila kitu kinategemea neno moja dogo: chini. Everything turns on one small syllable: under. Peter, an apostle who could have pulled rank, instead writes to the elders as a fellow elder, and tells them: "Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers" (1 Peter 5:1-2). Note the phrase — the flock of God. Not the flock of the pastor, not the flock of the elders, not the flock of the denomination. The sheep were bought with the blood of Christ, and they belong to Christ, who is the Chief Shepherd. The pastor is an undershepherd: a real shepherd with real authority and real responsibility, but always a second shepherd serving under the first. The moment a leader forgets that small word and begins to think of the church as his — his people, his pulpit, his ministry, his kingdom — he has stopped being a shepherd and started being a thief, however slowly and respectably the theft proceeds.

— 1 Petro 5:2 (SUV)"Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly." — 1 Peter 5:2 (NKJV)

Kazi Tatu za MchungajiThe Shepherd's Three Tasks

Mchungaji hufanya nini hasa? Kulisha, kuongoza, kulinda. Kiongozi anayelisha tu anakuwa mhadhiri; anayeongoza tu anakuwa mswagaji; anayelinda tu anakuwa mlinzi wa lango tupu. Mchungaji hufanya yote matatu kwa sababu kondoo wanahitaji yote matatu. What does a shepherd actually do? Strip the work down and three tasks remain, and a leader who neglects any one of them is only playing at the office. First, he feeds. The sheep cannot feed themselves; they must be led to green pasture, and for the church that pasture is the Word of God, taught plainly enough that ordinary believers can eat and grow. Second, he leads. Sheep left to themselves scatter and wander into danger, so the shepherd goes ahead of them and they follow his voice; he does not drive them from behind like cattle. Third, he protects. Wolves come — false teaching, division, the slow predators of discouragement and sin — and the shepherd stands between the flock and the danger, even at cost to himself. Feed, lead, protect. The leader who only feeds becomes a lecturer; the one who only leads becomes a driver; the one who only protects becomes a guard at an empty gate. The shepherd does all three because the sheep need all three.

Moyo wa Mchungaji: Jinsi, Si Nini TuThe Heart of the Shepherd: How, Not Just What

Peter is not finished with what the shepherd does; he presses into how he does it, and here the passage searches the heart. The shepherd is to serve "not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock" (1 Peter 5:2-3). Read those three contrasts slowly, for they expose the three diseases of the shepherd's heart. Not by compulsion, but willingly — the man who shepherds only because he is trapped, who would quit tomorrow if he could, has the wrong heart; God loves a willing shepherd. Not for dishonest gain, but eagerly — the man who shepherds for what he can get out of it, money or comfort or status, has made the flock a means to his own ends. Not lording it over them, but being an example — the man who drives the sheep with the heavy hand of a tyrant has forgotten that Christ leads by going first. The true shepherd does not say "Do as I command from a distance"; he says "Follow me as I follow Christ," and he leads from the front, where the danger is.

Mchungaji bora kuliko wote niliowahi kuwajua, nilikutana naye gerezani. The finest pastor I ever knew, I met in a prison. Arthur was converted while serving time in a maximum-security penitentiary, and there, behind the walls, he earned a bachelor's degree from a seminary. When he finished, he came to the prison where I served, as an inmate chaplain. We had started a master's program, and Arthur was among the first to enroll; when he earned his master's in theology, he himself carried most of the teaching of theology for our junior-college classes. But it was not his degrees that set him apart. Of all the dormitories, he asked to live in the one that housed the youngest men just entering prison, so that he could reach them. He walked the cell blocks, and more than once he preached a full sermon to a single inmate locked behind one door. He served in the program that cared for the dying, and would sit up the whole night cleaning a man, tending him, talking softly to him as he passed — and then come to work the next morning. Inmates could buy a few snacks for their lockers; Arthur left his standing open on purpose, so that any man who had nothing could take what he needed. When I stood up at his parole hearing, I told them the simple truth: he was the greatest pastor I had ever met. No one appointed Arthur a leader. He became one the way the Lord said shepherds are made — not by lording over the flock, but by becoming an example to it. People will obey a man who drives them only as far as they must; they will follow a man who serves them to the ends of the earth.

Wakili Ambaye Lazima Atoe HesabuThe Steward Who Must Give Account

Now set beside the shepherd a second picture: the steward. A steward in the ancient world managed a great house that was not his own; he held the keys, ran the affairs, and commanded the servants, but everything he touched belonged to his master, and the day was coming when the master would call him in to settle accounts. This is why the writer of Hebrews lays so heavy a charge on the leaders of the church: "Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch for your souls, as those who must give account" (Hebrews 13:17). Read what the leaders are watching: not the budget first, not the building first, but souls. And read why they watch so carefully: because they must give account for those souls to God Himself. This is the truth that turns administration from a worldly chore into a sacred trust. Every roster, every meeting, every hard conversation is the managing of a house that belongs to Another, and the Master is coming home. The steward who remembers the account he must give handles the smallest matter with care, because he knows that nothing in the Lord's house is too small to answer for.

The Lord Jesus drew this very picture and pressed it home. He asked, "Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?" (Luke 12:42), and He pronounced a blessing on the servant whom the master, when he comes, will find faithfully doing his work. Two things stand out for the church leader. The steward's duty is to give the household their food in due season — the very work of feeding the flock we saw above, now framed as the account a manager must render. And the steward is called faithful and wise: faithful, because the trust is not his own and he must be trustworthy with what belongs to Another; wise, because he must manage with skill and not merely good intentions. The leader who holds both — faithfulness to the Owner and wisdom in the work — is the steward the Master is looking for, and the one He will be glad to find at his post when He returns.

"Ni nani, basi, aliye wakili mwaminifu, mwenye busara, ambaye bwana wake atamweka juu ya utumishi wake, awape watu posho kwa wakati wake?" — Luka 12:42 (SUV)"Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?" — Luke 12:42 (NKJV)
— Waebrania 13:17 (SUV)"Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch for your souls, as those who must give account." — Hebrews 13:17 (NKJV)

Ahadi InayotutegemezaThe Promise That Sustains

If the account were the whole story, the work would crush a man. But Peter does not end with the weight; he ends with the reward. "And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away" (1 Peter 5:4). Here is the strength of the undershepherd: he serves a Chief Shepherd who is not a hard, absent master but the One who laid down His own life for the sheep, and who is coming back not only to settle accounts but to reward His faithful servants with a crown that will never wither. The earthly crowns men chase — the larger church, the bigger name, the applause of the crowd — all of them fade, and most of them fade within the man's own lifetime. The crown the Chief Shepherd gives never fades at all. So the undershepherd can pour himself out without bitterness and lead without grasping, because his reward is not in the flock's praise but in the Master's "Well done." Shepherd the flock of God, brother. It is His, not yours. Watch for souls as one who must give account. And serve in the joy of the coming Chief Shepherd, who repays His shepherds with a crown that lasts forever.
