On the first Easter morning, the first person to see the risen Lord Jesus was not Peter, nor John, nor any of the twelve. It was a woman named Mary Magdalene, who came to the tomb in tears and went away in worship. Her story is the story of what the resurrection does to a human heart: the risen Christ turns weeping into worship, and the One who calls us by name takes our grief away.

Subject: Mary Magdalene — from grief at the tomb to the first witness of the risen Christ.

Hoja Kuu: Kristo aliyefufuka hugeuza kilio kuwa ibada; Yule anayetuita kwa majina yetu huondoa huzuni yetu.Proposition: The risen Christ turns weeping into worship; the One who calls us by name takes our grief away.

First, let us be clear who she is. This is Mary Magdalene — not Mary the mother of Jesus, and not Mary of Bethany, the sister of Lazarus. The Bible tells us that she was a woman out of whom the Lord had cast seven demons (Luke 8:2). Whatever darkness had once held her, Jesus had set her completely free, and she never forgot it. She became one of the women who followed Jesus and supported His ministry out of their own means (Luke 8:1-3). When most of the disciples had fled in fear, Mary stood near the cross and watched her Lord die, and she watched to see where His body was laid (Mark 15:40, 47). And while it was still dark on the first day of the week, she was the first to come to the tomb. We will follow her through three movements.

I. HuzuniI. The Grief

Alikuwa bado hajaamini ufufuo; wazo hilo halikuingia akilini mwake kamwe. Kwa kweli alikuwa amekwisha kukimbia kuwaambia Simoni Petro na Yohana, "Wamemwondoa Bwana kaburini, wala hatujui walikomweka." Wale wanafunzi wawili walikwenda mbio kaburini, wakaona sanda zilizoachwa, wakarudi nyumbani kwao. Lakini Mariamu hakuweza kuondoka. Upendo ulimshikilia pale kando ya kaburi wakati wengine wote walikuwa wameondoka. Basi alisimama nje ya kaburi akilia. Alipoinama kuchungulia ndani, aliona malaika wawili wenye mavazi meupe, wameketi pale mwili wa Yesu ulipokuwa umelala.Mary came to the tomb expecting to find a dead body to anoint, and instead she found the stone rolled away and the grave empty. To her this could mean only one terrible thing: someone had taken the body of her Lord. She did not yet believe in the resurrection; the thought never entered her mind. In fact she had already run to tell Simon Peter and John, "They have taken away the Lord, and we do not know where they have laid Him." The two disciples raced to the tomb, saw the empty grave-clothes, and went back to their homes. But Mary could not leave. Love held her there at the graveside when everyone else had gone. So she stood outside the tomb, weeping. Stooping down to look inside, she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain.

"Mama, unalia nini?" Akawaambia, "Kwa sababu wamemwondoa Bwana wangu, wala mimi sijui walikomweka." (Yohana 20:13, SUV)"Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him." (John 20:13, NKJV)

Here is grief layered upon grief. It was not enough that they had crucified Him; now, she believed, they had even robbed Him of a resting place. Her state was one of trembling sorrow and fear, and she could not see past her tears. How often we are just like her — standing in the very presence of resurrection hope, yet so blinded by our weeping that we cannot see it.

II. KugeukaII. The Turning

Kisha kitu fulani kikamfanya ageuke nyuma. Then something made her turn around.

(Yohana 20:14, SUV)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. (John 20:14, NKJV)

Alidhani kwamba ni mtunza bustani. Kupitia machozi yake hakumtambua Yule yule aliyekuwa akimtafuta. "Bwana," alisema, "ikiwa umemchukua wewe, uniambie ulipomweka, nami nitamchukua." Alikuwa tayari kuubeba mwili yeye mwenyewe, mwanamke huyu aliyempenda hivyo. Na kisha Bwana Yesu akanena neno moja tu — jina lake mwenyewe. She supposed Him to be the gardener. Through her tears she did not recognize the very One she was looking for. "Sir," she said, "if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away." She was ready to carry the body herself, this woman who loved Him so. And then the Lord Jesus spoke a single word — her own name.

Yesu akamwambia, "Mariamu!" Yeye akageuka, akamwambia, "Raboni!" (yaani, Mwalimu wangu). (Yohana 20:16, SUV)Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him, "Rabboni!" (which is to say, Teacher). (John 20:16, NKJV)

One word, and everything changed. He did not preach her a sermon; He simply spoke her name, and in the sound of that beloved voice she knew Him at once. Grief became adoring worship in a single heartbeat. "Rabboni!" she cried — my Teacher, my Master. So overwhelmed was she that she took hold of Him, unwilling ever to let Him go again. But Jesus gently said, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father" (John 20:17). She did not need to hold Him with her hands; He would be with her in a deeper and more lasting way than before. The risen Christ was not a ghost or a vision but her living Lord, the same Jesus she had followed, now triumphant over death. This is exactly what the Lord had said of Himself: the Good Shepherd "calls his own sheep by name and leads them out" (John 10:3). She knew His voice because she belonged to Him. The risen Christ still does this; He comes to His own in the middle of their sorrow and calls them by name, and the tears that blinded them are wiped away by the sight of His face.

III. UshuhudaIII. The Witness

Kulikuwa na jambo moja zaidi. Mariamu Magdalene hakuwa tu wa kwanza kumwona Bwana aliyefufuka; alikuwa wa kwanza kutumwa kwenda kuzitangaza habari njema. There was one thing more. Mary Magdalene was not only the first to see the risen Lord; she was the first to be sent to tell the good news.

(Yohana 20:17, SUV)Jesus said to her, "Go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'" (John 20:17, NKJV)

The first preacher of the resurrection was this woman whose life Christ had completely remade. She ran to the disciples with the greatest announcement the world had ever heard: "I have seen the Lord!" The resurrection had changed everything for her, and it would soon change everything for them. There is a quiet wonder in this. In that day the testimony of a woman was given little weight, yet God chose a woman to be the very first herald of the resurrection. The Lord who had cast seven demons out of her now entrusted to her the greatest news in history. This is how Christ honors the lowly and the redeemed: He lifts up those the world overlooks and sends them out as His witnesses.

Ukweli Unaobadilisha MaishaThe Fact That Changes Lives

This is the heart of the whole matter. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not a comforting legend; it is a fact, and it is a fact that changes lives. The apostle Peter would later stand before thousands and declare, "This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses" (Acts 2:32). Paul would write down the gospel in its simplest form: "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4), and he listed the many eyewitnesses who saw the risen Christ alive. Paul even staked the whole of the faith on it: if Christ is not risen, he said, then our preaching is empty and our faith is futile, and we are still in our sins. But Christ is risen indeed, and because He lives, all who belong to Him will live also. The empty tomb is the cornerstone of everything we believe and the guarantee of everything we hope for; it is the reason the gospel is good news at all. What the empty tomb took from Mary Magdalene was her grief; what it gave her was the living Christ. This is the difference between religion and the gospel. Religion can admire a dead teacher and keep his memory; only the gospel can introduce you to a Savior who is alive. Mary did not go home with a memory; she went home having seen the Lord.

Ndipo akakivua kile kitambaa cheusi, wala hakukivaa tena kamwe. Kwa nini amwombolezee Mwokozi aliye hai? There was once a man in a faraway British colony who had heard only of the death of Jesus, only of the cross. Moved by the sufferings of the crucified Christ, he wore a black armband to mark himself a follower of the One who had died. He carried his sorrow about as a kind of devotion, until one day he heard a sermon on the resurrection — and learned for the first time that his Lord was not dead and buried at all, but alive and risen. He took off the black armband then, and he never put it on again. Why should he mourn a Savior who lives?

Hiyo ndiyo tofauti ambayo kaburi tupu huleta. Hatumtumikii mwalimu aliyekufa ambaye tunalitembelea kaburi lake; tunamtumikia Bwana aliye hai anayetembea pamoja nasi hata sasa. That is the difference the empty tomb makes. We do not serve a dead teacher whose grave we visit; we serve a living Lord who walks with us still. When Mary turned that morning, she turned from a tomb to a Person, from death to life, from weeping to worship. And the Lord who called her by name knows your name too. Whatever grief has you standing blinded by your tears, the risen Christ is nearer than you think, ready to speak your name and turn your mourning into joy. Mary's cry of "Rabboni!" is the cry of every heart that has met the living Lord — and it can be yours. This is where the whole story of every believer begins: not at a grave to be mourned, but at an empty tomb and a living Savior who speaks our name. The same power that raised Him will one day raise all who are His, and wipe away every tear from their eyes.
