Of all the disciples, Peter is the one we know best, because Peter is the one most like us. He is bold and then afraid, believing and then doubting, loyal and then a coward — and through it all, loved and never let go by his Lord. His life asks each of us a single question: how firm is your faith? And it answers with good news for every faltering believer: Christ takes a stumbling man and, through failure and the power of the resurrection, makes him a rock who feeds the sheep.

Somo: Petro — kutoka mvuvi mwenye pupa hadi mwamba anayelilisha kundi.Subject: Peter — from impulsive fisherman to the rock who feeds the flock.

Proposition: Christ takes a faltering man and, through failure and resurrection-power, makes him a fearless shepherd.

Tutafuatilia hatua tatu katika maisha ya Petro. We will trace three movements in the life of Peter.

I. MvuviI. The Fisherman

Kwa mtu huyo wa kawaida aliyefanya kazi kwa mikono yake Yesu alisema:Peter was a fisherman, mending his nets by the Sea of Galilee when Jesus walked by. Anyone who has watched the fishermen on Lake Chapala set out before dawn knows the life: hard, weathered, unglamorous, ruled by the wind and the catch. To that ordinary working man Jesus said:

Nifuateni, nami nitawafanya wavuvi wa watu. (Mathayo 4:19, SUV)Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. (Matthew 4:19, NKJV)

Naye Petro akaziacha nyavu zake akamfuata. Hakuwa bado ameelewa yote ambayo jambo hilo lingemaanisha; alikuja tu. And Peter left his nets and followed. He did not yet understand all that it would mean; he simply came. That is where every disciple begins — not with a finished faith, but with a willingness to follow the One who calls.

There was a day when Peter had fished all night and caught nothing, and Jesus told him to let down his nets once more. Peter obeyed, and the catch was so great that the nets began to break and the boats began to sink. Seeing it, Peter fell down at Jesus' knees and said, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" He sensed at once that he was unworthy to stand so near such holiness. But Jesus answered, "Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men." From the very beginning, then, the Lord was calling not a worthy man but a sinful one — and a sinful man is the only kind He has ever called.

II. MwanafunziII. The Disciple

Peter's years with Jesus show us the good, the bad, and the ugly — for the same man who reached the heights also stumbled badly, and the Lord used both.

Mazuri — ukiri mkuu. Yesu alipowauliza wanafunzi waliamini yeye ni nani, ni Petro aliyejibu kwa niaba yao wote:The good — the great confession. When Jesus asked the disciples who they believed He was, it was Peter who answered for them all:

Wewe ndiwe Kristo, Mwana wa Mungu aliye hai. (Mathayo 16:16, SUV)You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. (Matthew 16:16, NKJV)

This was a confession given by revelation, and Jesus blessed him for it. Upon the great truth Peter had just confessed, the Lord declared, "On this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." Here Peter is at his best, speaking the central truth of the faith.

Kisha kitu kikatokea:The bad — the Peter Doubt. But the same Peter who could rise so high could also sink. One night the disciples were straining at the oars in a storm when they saw Jesus walking on the water. Peter, impulsive as ever, called out, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." Jesus said, "Come" — and Peter actually walked on the water toward Him. Then something happened:

(Mathayo 14:30, SUV)But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" (Matthew 14:30, NKJV)

Yule aliyemwamuru Petro atembee hatamwacha azame. As long as Peter looked at Christ, he walked; the moment he saw the wind, he lost faith in his Lord's power and began to sink. Jesus immediately reached out His hand and caught him, saying, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" Notice what failed — not Christ's power, but Peter's confidence in it. I once knew a seminary student named Wayne Woodward, a deaf man who had given up a good job at Boeing and moved his family clear across the country to prepare for ministry. His doubt was not about God at all; it was about himself. "I don't belong here," he would say. "I could never pastor a church." That is the Peter doubt — not doubting God's power, but doubting whether God could use someone like you. And the answer to it is always the same: God is not looking for ability; He is looking for availability. The One who bid Peter walk will not let him sink.

The ugly — the denial. Then came Peter's darkest hour. On the night Jesus was arrested, Peter, who had sworn he would die before denying his Lord, denied three times that he even knew Him — the last time with curses, as a servant girl pressed him. And then the rooster crowed. Luke tells us that at that very moment "the Lord turned and looked at Peter," and the memory of that look broke him. He went out and wept bitterly. This is the lowest point a follower can reach: not weakness on the water, but open denial of the Lord he loved.

III. MchungajiIII. The Pastor

Kila mara Petro alijibu ndiyo, na kila mara Yesu alimpa agizo:And here the gospel shines, for the story does not end at the denial. After the resurrection, the risen Christ sought Peter out by the same sea where He had first called him, and three times — one for each denial — He asked, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" Each time Peter answered yes, and each time Jesus gave him a charge:

Lisha wana-kondoo wangu... Chunga kondoo zangu... Lisha kondoo zangu. (Yohana 21:15-17, SUV)Feed My lambs... Tend My sheep... Feed My sheep. (John 21:15-17, NKJV)

The Lord did not cast Peter off for his failure; He restored him and recommissioned him. The fisherman who had denied his Master was made a shepherd to feed the flock. And feed them he did. On the Day of Pentecost, the same Peter who had cowered before a servant girl stood up before thousands and boldly preached Christ crucified and risen, and three thousand were saved. Later God used him to open the door of the gospel to the Gentiles, sending him to the house of Cornelius (Acts 10) with the realization that God shows no partiality. The denying disciple had become the rock who feeds the sheep. Years later this same Peter would write two letters to scattered, suffering believers, comforting them in their trials and urging the elders among them, "Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers" — the very charge the risen Christ had given him by the sea. The trembling lamb had truly become a faithful shepherd, and he spent the rest of his life feeding the flock he had once been too afraid to own.

Ufufuo Ulimgeuza Mwoga Kuwa Mpiganaji ShupavuThe Resurrection Turned the Coward into a Crusader

It was not a stronger personality or a fresh resolve. The difference was the resurrection. Before the resurrection, Peter denied Christ three times to save his own skin. After it, the very same man proclaimed Christ openly, was arrested, beaten, jailed, and threatened — and gained nothing for himself in this world. Tradition tells us Peter at last died for Christ, crucified upside down, counting himself unworthy to die as his Lord had died. No ordinary explanation accounts for that change. Only one thing does: he had seen the risen Lord. As Peter himself declared at Pentecost, "This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses" (Acts 2:32).

The risen Christ still turns fear into courage. There was an African man named Malamba, a converted witch doctor, who was tormented by his neighbors' threats of voodoo and curses, until the missionaries taught him the words of the risen Christ to John:

(Ufunuo 1:17-18, SUV)Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. (Revelation 1:17-18, NKJV)

When Malamba grasped that the living Christ — not the witch doctors, not the spirits — held the keys of death and held his own destiny, fear lost its grip and he was filled with courage and hope. The same risen Lord who emptied the tomb holds your life in His hands as well.

Kushindwa Si MwishoFailure Is Not the End

This is the great encouragement of Peter's life: failure is not the end for the one Christ restores. Peter doubted on the water and denied at the fire, yet he became the rock who fed the flock and finally laid down his life for his Lord. It was never his natural strength that made him; it was grace and risen power. So if you have stumbled, take heart — the Lord who looked at Peter still looks at you, not to condemn, but to restore. He is asking the same question He asked by the sea: "Do you love Me?" And to all who answer yes, He gives the same charge and the same power: follow Me, and feed My sheep.
