When Hannah left her little son at the tabernacle in Shiloh, she could not have known what God would make of him. That boy, Samuel, would grow up to become one of the towering figures of the Old Testament — the last of the judges and the first of the great prophets, the man who would anoint Israel's first two kings, and the bridge between the chaotic days of the judges and the kingdom of David. But Samuel's greatness did not begin with power or position. It began on a quiet night, when a child answered God's call with a posture every believer must learn: "Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears." Samuel's own calling that night was a unique prophetic commission, given at a time when the word of the Lord was rare — but the humility behind his answer, a readiness to listen and obey rather than to tell God what we expect Him to say, is exactly the posture every believer needs toward the Word God has already given us.
Somo: Samweli — mvulana aliyemsikia Mungu, nabii aliyemtumikia maisha yake yote.Subject: Samuel — the boy who heard God, the prophet who served Him all his life.
Proposition: From the night God called a boy who answered "Speak, Lord," Samuel gave his whole life to hearing and obeying God's Word, calling Israel back in prayer, and anointing God's chosen kings — a prophet of integrity and obedience who bridges the judges and the kings, and whose anointing of David points to the true Anointed One, Jesus Christ.
Tutafuatilia hatua tano katika maisha ya Samweli. We will trace five movements in the life of Samuel.
To feel the weight of Samuel's life, we must remember the times into which he was born. The book of Judges, which comes just before his story, ends with one of the saddest verses in the Bible: "everyone did what was right in his own eyes." Israel had no king, no settled leadership, and little sense of God's voice. Into that confusion and spiritual silence God placed a single boy, dedicated by a praying mother, to become the voice that would call a whole nation back. It is a pattern God loves to repeat — when things look darkest, He is often quietly preparing one faithful person through whom He will work. Samuel was that person for his generation.
I. Mvulana Aliyemsikia MunguI. The Boy Who Heard God
Samuel was still a boy, ministering before the Lord under old Eli, in a dark time when, the Scripture says, "the word of the LORD was rare; there was no widespread revelation." One night, as Samuel lay down, a voice called his name. Three times he ran to Eli, sure the old priest had called him; three times Eli sent him back. At last Eli perceived that it was the Lord, and he told the boy what to say.
When the voice came again, Samuel answered — and God gave him his first message, a hard word of judgment against Eli's own house. Notice two things about this boy. First, he was willing to listen: he did not tell God what he wanted; he made himself a servant who would hear. And second, he was willing to obey even when the word was hard, faithfully delivering a message he would much rather not have given. Samuel's own calling that night was a unique prophetic commission; God does not call every believer to receive new revelation the way He called Samuel. But the posture behind Samuel's answer is exactly where a life with God begins for all of us — not in doing great things for Him, but in learning to be still before His written Word and say, "Speak, Lord, I am listening, and I will obey."
There is something tender in the way God dealt with young Samuel. He did not overwhelm the boy with thunder; He simply called his name, the way a father wakes a child. And He was patient with Samuel's confusion, calling again and again until, with Eli's help, the boy understood. God still works this way with those who are young in the faith. He meets us where we are, speaks in ways we can begin to grasp, and is patient while we learn to recognize His voice. We need not be afraid that we are too young, too new, or too slow to hear from God. If we will simply make ourselves available and say, "Speak, Lord," He is more than willing to teach us to listen.
II. Nabii Aliyewaita Israeli WarudiII. The Prophet Who Called Israel Back
Samuel grew, and all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that he was established as a prophet of the Lord. He found a people who had drifted into idolatry, and he called them home. "Put away the foreign gods," he said, "and prepare your hearts for the LORD and serve Him only." The people gathered at Mizpah, confessed their sin, and Samuel prayed for them; and when the Philistines attacked, God thundered against them and Israel was delivered.
Samuel named that stone Ebenezer — "stone of help" — saying, "Thus far the Lord has helped us." Samuel was a man of prayer above all else. Later he would tell the people, "Far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you." He understood that a leader's first work is done on his knees, and that revival comes when a people put away their idols and a man of God stands in the gap to intercede. Every believer needs an Ebenezer or two — a marked place in the memory where we can stop and say, "this far the Lord has brought me" — and the prayers of the faithful are still the engine of every true return to God.
It is worth lingering on that word Ebenezer, because it captures something every believer needs. The Christian life is a long road, and it is easy to forget along the way how faithfully God has carried us. Samuel's stone was a deliberate act of memory — a way of freezing one moment of deliverance so the people would never forget it. We would do well to build a few Ebenezers of our own: to write down the answered prayer, to mark the anniversary of God's rescue, to tell our children the story of how the Lord helped us in a hard year. "Thus far the Lord has helped us" is not only a record of the past; it is fuel for faith in the present, for the God who has helped us thus far will not abandon us now.
III. Mtawaza Wafalme na Mpakwa Mafuta wa BwanaIII. The Kingmaker and the Lord's Anointed
In Samuel's old age the people came with a demand: "Give us a king to judge us like all the nations." It grieved Samuel deeply, but the Lord told him, "They have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me." So Samuel warned them of all that a king would cost them, and then, at God's direction, he anointed Saul — a tall and handsome man, every inch a king to the eye. But Saul's heart turned from obedience, and God rejected him from being king. Then God sent Samuel to Bethlehem, to the house of Jesse, to anoint a new king.
Jesse paraded his impressive older sons, but God chose none of them, teaching Samuel the lesson that lies at the heart of the whole Bible: the Lord does not see as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. And so Samuel anointed the youngest, a shepherd boy named David. Samuel was the kingmaker, the prophet who poured the oil that set men apart as the Lord's anointed. So sacred was that anointing that David, even while Saul hunted him to kill him, would not lift his hand against the king, saying, "The LORD forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD's anointed." What God sets apart we must learn to honor — and we must never forget that God's eyes are always on the heart, not on the appearance we work so hard to manage before men.
The contrast between Saul and David is one of the great lessons of First Samuel, and Samuel stood at the center of it. Saul looked the part: he was tall, handsome, and impressive, the kind of leader people naturally follow. David, by contrast, was the forgotten youngest son, left in the fields with the sheep while his brothers were summoned. Yet God passed over the one the world admired and chose the one whose heart was right. This should both humble us and encourage us. It humbles the proud, who trust in their gifts and appearance; and it encourages the overlooked, who fear they are too ordinary to be used. God has never been limited by what impresses people. He looks past the surface to the heart, and from there He builds His kingdom.
IV. Mtu wa Uadilifu na UtiiIV. The Man of Integrity and Obedience
At the end of his life, Samuel stood before all Israel and did something few leaders would ever dare to do. He asked them to testify against him: "Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I received a bribe?" And the people answered, "You have not cheated us or oppressed us, nor have you taken anything from any man's hand." Here was a lifetime of clean hands — a man who had led a whole nation and grown rich in nothing but a clear conscience.
And it was this same Samuel who had spoken God's piercing word to King Saul when Saul tried to cover his disobedience with religious sacrifice: "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice." Samuel's whole life preached what his mouth declared — that God desires not the outward show of religion but the surrendered, obedient heart, and that those who lead His people must do so with clean hands. Integrity in his walk and obedience to God's voice: these were the marks of the man, and they are still the marks God looks for in His servants today.
We should not pass over how rare and costly Samuel's integrity was. He lived in a corrupt age, surrounded by leaders who used their position for gain — even Eli's own sons had robbed the offerings and abused their office. It would have been easy for Samuel to do the same and to excuse it as the way things were done. Instead he kept his hands clean through a lifetime of public service, so that at the end he could ask a whole nation to find fault with him and hear only silence. That kind of integrity is built quietly, one honest choice at a time, long before it is ever tested in public. And it preaches a sermon all its own: a life that matches its message gives weight to every word the servant of God ever speaks.
V. Nabii Anaelekeza kwa Mpakwa MafutaV. The Prophet Points to the Anointed One
Samuel was prophet, judge, and intercessor, and in every one of those roles he points us beyond himself to Christ.
He spoke the word of God; Jesus is the living Word and the great Prophet to whom all the prophets pointed — indeed, the apostle Peter said that all the prophets "from Samuel" onward foretold the days of Christ. Samuel judged and delivered Israel; Jesus is the Judge and the Deliverer of all who trust Him. Samuel prayed for his people and would not cease; Jesus ever lives to make intercession for us. But the deepest connection is the oil in Samuel's hand. Samuel anointed kings, marking them as "the Lord's anointed" — yet Saul fell, and even David sinned, and every earthly anointed king proved unequal to the office. Samuel's anointing of David was a signpost pointing forward to David's greater Son, the true and final King. For the word "Messiah," and its Greek form "Christ," both mean "the Anointed One." Jesus was anointed not with a horn of oil but with the Holy Spirit — the King who never fails, the Prophet who is Himself the Word, the Priest who ever prays — and He reigns forever. So Samuel's life ends where ours must begin. The boy's posture in the night — a heart ready to hear and obey rather than to dictate what it wanted — is exactly what God still seeks from every one of us, not toward a new voice in the dark but toward the Word He has already spoken and the Anointed King He has already given. Hear His word, bow to His Anointed King, and give Him, as Samuel did, the whole of your life.
