No life in the Old Testament is drawn in more colors than David's. He was a shepherd boy, a giant-killer, a fugitive, a king, a poet, a sinner, and a penitent — and through it all God called him "a man after My own heart" (Acts 13:22). The thread that holds his whole story together is the Shepherd: the boy who kept sheep came to know the LORD as his own Shepherd, and the God who shepherded David fought his battles, supplied his needs, and forgave his sin. The same Shepherd cares for us in exactly the same way.

Somo: Daudi — mfalme-mchungaji anayeupendeza moyo wa Mungu.Subject: David — the shepherd-king after God's own heart.

Proposition: The Lord shepherds His servant through faith, trust, and repentance — fighting his battles, providing his needs, and forgiving his sin — and shepherds us the same way.

Tutafuatilia hatua tatu katika maisha ya Daudi. We will trace three movements in the life of David.

I. Imani ya Mvulana MchungajiI. The Shepherd Boy's Faith

Goliathi alimcheka mvulana mwenye kombeo, lakini Daudi alimjibu kwa maneno yanayovuma katika karne zote:Saul's whole army stood paralyzed before Goliath, a Philistine giant — the traditional Hebrew text puts him at roughly nine feet tall, though the ancient Greek translation and the Dead Sea Scrolls give a shorter reading — who blasphemed the living God and dared any Israelite to fight him. Forty days he taunted them, and not one soldier would go. Then a shepherd boy arrived with bread for his brothers, heard the giant's blasphemy, and was the only one unafraid. David went out with a sling and five smooth stones — and he needed only one. Goliath laughed at a boy with a sling, but David answered him with words that ring down the centuries:

(1 Samweli 17:45-47, SUV)You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts... This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand... that all this assembly may know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD's, and He will give you into our hands. (1 Samuel 17:45-47, NKJV)

Here is the lesson: do not size up your problems by your own strength; measure them against God's might. The whole army saw a giant too big to beat; David saw a giant too big to miss, because he was looking at God. It is the same trust he would later put into a psalm — "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me."

Unapokabiliana na jitu, vita ni vya Bwana.I think of a llama I heard of, set among a flock of sheep in Montana. A coyote can scatter and kill defenseless sheep, but the llama is afraid of nothing; when it sees the coyote, it lifts its head and walks straight at it, and the predator loses its nerve and its opportunity. God's people need not cower before the enemy either. I think too of a grandmother whose husband was hostile to the gospel, honking the horn and shouting for her in front of the church. She did not win him by argument; she answered him with a quiet, humble spirit, just as Peter counsels a believing wife to win her husband "by the conduct" of her life (1 Peter 3:1) — and in time she won him to Christ. She let God do the battle. For the truth is that no man ever won a fight against the devil in his own strength — not Adam, not Peter, not Thomas — no one but Christ. When you face a giant, the battle belongs to the Lord.

II. BWANA Ndiye Mchungaji WanguII. The Lord My Shepherd

Of all David wrote, none is loved like the twenty-third Psalm — and no one was better qualified to write it, for he had kept sheep himself and knew how helpless they are without a shepherd. The psalm falls into three movements of a shepherd's care.

First, the Shepherd's provision. "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." He gives rest — "He makes me to lie down in green pastures" — for a sheep will not lie down while it is anxious or hungry, and sometimes God has to lay a driven man on his back before he will rest. He gives refreshment beside the still waters, and He gives restoration: "He restores my soul." A sheep can become "cast down," rolled over on its back and unable to right itself, where it will perish unless the shepherd lifts it up — and that is what God does for the soul that has fallen.

Hunihuisha nafsi yangu. (Zaburi 23:1-3, SUV)The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul. (Psalm 23:1-3, NKJV)

Second, the Shepherd's protection. He leads "in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake" — His plan for us is good. And when the path goes down into the dark, His presence goes with us: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me." The comfort is not the absence of the valley but the presence of the Shepherd. "Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me" — the rod to drive off the wolf, the staff to draw the sheep back; His power is enough.

Third, the Shepherd's preparation. "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over." The shepherd goes ahead to ready the pasture, and pours healing oil on the wounded sheep. Then comes the shepherd's mark: "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life" — goodness and mercy following us like two faithful sheepdogs, the brand that shows we belong to Him. And the psalm ends at home: "and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever." A dying boy was once taught to count the psalm on his fingers and to hold the fourth finger — "the LORD is my shepherd" — for everything turns on that little word my. This Shepherd is no distant figure; the Lord Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep" (John 10:11). He is the Shepherd of the twenty-third Psalm in the flesh.

III. Msamaha wa MchungajiIII. The Shepherd's Forgiveness

But David was no marble saint. He fell, and he fell hard. He took Bathsheba, another man's wife, and then had her husband Uriah killed to cover it. For about a year he carried the guilt unconfessed, and the joy drained out of him — until God sent the prophet Nathan, who told him of a rich man who stole a poor man's only ewe lamb. When David burned with anger at the man, Nathan turned and said, "You are the man!" (2 Samuel 12:7). Out of that confrontation came Psalm 51, and in it we can trace the path back to God.

He was confronted — Nathan's parable cut through every excuse and named the sin. He admitted it: "Against You, You only, have I sinned." He made no excuses, blamed no one, and killed no prophet for telling him the truth — he simply owned it. He was truly sorry: a year of guilt had taught him that unconfessed sin blocks the channel of prayer, and he knew the promise that "if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins" (1 John 1:9). And he turned — back to God, with a new heart: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." His sin was forgiven, though some consequences remained, for forgiveness does not always erase the wreckage we have made — and the pain of our sin, every bit of it, was finally borne by Christ on the cross.

In the trenches of the First World War, the story is told of a man who found a wounded comrade and gave him his own identity disc, in effect saying, "I will carry your name and your crimes away in my death." That is what Christ has done; He takes our guilt and carries it away, and "He doesn't remember" it against us anymore. There is an old tale of a wandering dog named Lassie called home across the moors with the words, "Lassie, come home — for the dear Lord's sake." That is the Shepherd's voice to every wanderer: come home, for the dear Lord's sake.

Neema Moja Katika YoteThe One Grace Through It All

Three movements, but one grace runs through them: the Shepherd who fights our battles, provides our needs, and forgives our sin. David did not earn any of it; he received it all by faith — the same faith that walked out to meet a giant, that rested in green pastures, and that crept home after a fall. The boy who once measured a giant against the might of God learned across a lifetime that every battle, every need, and every sin must be brought to the same place: to the Shepherd, to whom the battle belongs. And that is the hope this psalm-singing king leaves with us — the Shepherd who was faithful to David, through triumph and through failure alike, is the very same Shepherd who keeps us, and He will not lose one of His sheep.
