Tunachohifadhi.
Kisha kamilisha “Msingi wa Kibiblia wa Ukuaji wa Kanisa.”Assignment: Work through the handout “Numbering the Passages in Acts.” Then complete “The Biblical Basis of Church Growth.”
Before we talk about methods, models, or measurements, we must settle a prior question: does God want His church to grow? Because if church growth is merely a human ambition — a denominational scoreboard, a pastor’s vanity — then we ought to repent of this whole study. But if the growth of the church is the revealed will and work of God, then to neglect it is to stand against the current of heaven itself. So we begin not with the experts, but with the Book.
Agizo. Kristo aliyefufuka hakuliachia kanisa lake pendekezo. The mandate. The risen Christ did not leave His church a suggestion. He left it a command, and He prefaced it with all the authority in heaven and earth: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:18–20). Note carefully what He commissioned. Not “make decisions.” Not “draw crowds.” Not “make casual believers or church attenders.” Make disciples. The Commission is the charter of church growth, and it sets the goal once and for all — not bodies in a room, but disciples in the making, baptized into the body and taught to obey.
Kumbukumbu. The record. Then read the Acts of the Apostles with a pencil in your hand, and number the growth as it comes. They began as about a hundred and twenty in an upper room (Acts 1:15). At Pentecost three thousand were added in a day (2:41). Soon the number of the men came to about five thousand (4:4). And between the great moments runs a quieter refrain, easy to miss and impossible to overstate: “the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved” (2:47). The disciples multiplied (6:1). “The word of God increased, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly” (6:7). The churches “were multiplied” (9:31). “The word of God grew and multiplied” (12:24). The churches “increased in number daily” (16:5). “So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed” (19:20). Luke is keeping count on purpose. The Spirit who inspired him was not embarrassed by numbers, because behind every number was a name, and behind every name a soul rescued from death. To care about the count is to care about the people the count represents.
Mtindo. Lazima mtu apande. Lazima mtu atie maji. Kuna kazi halisi, mbinu halisi, wajibu halisi wa kibinadamu — Paulo hakukaa akisubiri mavuno yaanguke kutoka angani. Na bado chipukizi la kijani linapopenya udongo hatimaye, hakuna mkulima mwenye akili timamu anayejipa sifa, kwa maana hawezi kuifanya hata mbegu moja iishi. “Hivyo apandaye si kitu, wala atiaye maji si kitu; bali Mungu akuzaye.” The pattern. But mark who does the growing, for here is the hinge of the whole matter. “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:6–7). Paul will not let us forget either half of that sentence. Someone must plant. Someone must water. There is real labor, real method, real human responsibility — Paul did not sit and wait for the harvest to fall from the sky. And yet when the green shoot finally breaks the soil, no farmer in his right mind takes the credit, for he cannot make a single seed live. “Neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” This is the divine-and-human pattern that runs through the whole of Scripture: God works His sovereign will through the willing labor of ordinary people. The Word is God-breathed, yet written by men. Preaching is God’s truth, yet through a man’s voice. And church growth, as the old definition has it, is God at work through His redeemed people. Lose the human half and you get a fatalism that folds its hands and prays for a harvest it refuses to plant. Lose the divine half and you get the franchise — technique without the Spirit, machinery that manufactures attenders and cannot make a saint. The whole of this course lives in the tension of that one verse.
Picha. The images. And see how the Bible cannot stop reaching for living pictures of the church. It is a body that “grows with a growth that is from God” (Colossians 2:19), knit together and building itself up in love (Ephesians 4:16). It is a temple that “grows into a holy dwelling place for God” (Ephesians 2:21). It is a seed — the smallest of seeds — that becomes a tree where the birds of the air come and nest (Matthew 13:31–32); it is leaven hidden in the dough until the whole is leavened (13:33); it is seed scattered on the ground that sprouts and grows the farmer knows not how (Mark 4:26–29). Every image is alive, and living things grow. A tree that has stopped growing is not resting; it is dying. We will say more of this when we come to the plateaued church, but the seed is planted here: growth is simply the native condition of anything God has made alive.
Moyo. The heart. Finally, behind the mandate and the record and the pattern stands the heart of the Father Himself. He is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). He is the shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to find the one (Luke 15), the woman who sweeps the house for a single coin, the father who runs down the road. And He gives His church the same heart, or He gives it nothing at all. Jesus looked on the crowds and was moved with compassion, “because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd,” and then He turned to His men and said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:36–38). There is where the biblical basis of church growth finally lands us — on our knees. We ended the last unit there, and we begin this one there, because the harvest was never ours. It is His. We are only the laborers He prays us into. “I will build my church,” said the Lord (Matthew 16:18) — I will build it. The most we ever do is swing the hammer He puts in our hands.
Tulipo Sasa (2026)Where We Are Now (2026)
A generation of decline in the West has tempted the church toward two opposite errors, and the biblical foundation guards against both. On the one side is the idol of numbers — the temptation, in a results-driven age, to chase the crowd by any means, to measure a ministry by its attendance and its budget, and to crown the pastor who can fill a room. The scandals of the last thirty years are, in part, the bitter fruit of that idol. On the other side is the quiet despair that has settled over many a faithful, shrinking congregation: we are small, we are old, the culture has turned, so why try? Scripture rebukes them both. Growth is not a trophy to be seized by clever technique; it is the increase God gives. But neither is decline to be accepted as our settled lot; the God who gave the increase in Acts has not changed, and the very multiplication Luke recorded is, in our own day, breaking out across Africa, Asia, and Latin America — Acts being written again in languages Luke never heard. The plant-and-water-and-God-gives-the-growth pattern is exactly what we see there: prayer and labor offered up, and a sovereign Spirit answering. Our task in the chapters ahead is to plant well and water faithfully, in this changed soil — and to leave the increase, as we always must, to God.

You have just numbered the passages with Luke — the hundred and twenty, the three thousand, the five thousand, the word of God multiplying, the churches increasing daily. Each of those surges I open up in its own setting in our Acts Intensive. If this unit has stirred you to study the growth of the early church for yourself, here is where each honorable mention lives in full:
• Rumi yafikiwa, injili bila kizuizi (Matendo 28:31) — Sehemu ya 10.• Pentecost and the first three thousand (Acts 2) — Acts Intensive, Unit 1.
• The five thousand and the multiplying disciples (Acts 4–6) — Unit 2.
• The churches multiplied in the Spirit's comfort (Acts 9:31) — Unit 4.
• Antioch believing; the word growing and multiplying (Acts 11–12) — Unit 5.
• The churches increasing in number daily (Acts 16:5) — Unit 6.
• Ephesus, the word mightily prevailing (Acts 19:20) — Unit 8.
• Rome reached, the gospel unhindered (Acts 28:31) — Unit 10.
Study them there, and the lesson of this unit will only deepen: the increase Luke counts was never a crowd around a man, but the Lord adding to His church such as should be saved.
