Tunachokabiliana NachoWhat We Are Facing
The last unit spoke of a church that shares our creed. This one does not. Here we come to the folk religion of our own land — Santa Muerte, spiritism, the curandero and the brujo, and the whole tangle of practices in which Christian words and Catholic images are mixed with the occult and the worship of other powers. Let us be plain from the first sentence: this is not a Christian tradition with which we have a family disagreement. It is a return to the very things the living God has forbidden, dressed up in familiar clothing. It cannot save; it enslaves. And it is not empty superstition, as we shall see, but real traffic with real darkness. We say this not because we despise those caught in it — they are our neighbors, and many of them are poor, sick, and afraid — but because we love them, and because no one is set free by being told that their chains are jewelry. Official Catholicism, it should be said, condemns much of this too, and rightly; what we describe here is not the teaching of Rome but the folk practice that has grown up alongside and beneath it. Our purpose is to name it truthfully, to hear God's verdict on it, and to hold out the only power that can break it: the finished victory of Jesus Christ.
Santa Muerte: Ibada kwa KifoSanta Muerte: Devotion to Death
Consider first Santa Muerte, "Holy Death," whose skeletal image, robed and carrying a scythe, now stands on altars in millions of Mexican homes. She is prayed to for protection, for love, for money, for healing, and, darkly, for vengeance against enemies; she is embraced especially by the poor, by prisoners, and by those in the violent trades who feel abandoned by everyone else. Her devotees call her a saint, but she is no saint: she is death itself, personified and adored. The Catholic Church has condemned her cult as incompatible with the Christian faith, and the Church is right to do so. For here is the heart of the matter: the Christian faith proclaims that death is the last enemy, the very thing Christ came to destroy — and Santa Muerte invites men and women to bow down and pray to that enemy. To seek life, protection, and blessing from death is to beg the executioner for mercy. It is a lie at the deepest level, and behind it stands not a kindly folk-mother but the one whom Scripture calls the enemy of our souls.
Uwasiliani na Mizimu na Kuuliza WafuSpiritism and the Consulting of the Dead
Alongside this runs espiritismo, spiritism: the attempt to reach and consult the spirits of the dead through mediums, séances, and spirit-guides, a practice spread widely through Latin America and blended freely with folk healing. It promises contact with departed loved ones and hidden knowledge from beyond. But Scripture calls this by its true name, necromancy — the consulting of the dead — and forbids it absolutely. "Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?" asks the prophet (Isaiah 8:19). When Saul sought out a medium, it was counted among the sins for which he lost his life and his kingdom (1 Samuel 28; 1 Chronicles 10:13). The dead in Christ are with the Lord and are not ours to summon; and the "spirits" that answer the medium's call are not the loved ones they pretend to be, but deceiving spirits wearing their faces.
Curanderismo, Brujería, na UaguziCuranderismo, Brujería, and Divination
Yanautaja uchawi kati ya matendo ya mwili yanayowafungia watu nje ya ufalme wa Mungu (Wagalatia 5:19-21), na yanamorodhesha mchawi kati ya wale walio nje ya mji wa Mungu milele (Ufunuo 21:8; 22:15).Then there is the wide world of the curandero and the bruja. We must be fair on one point: not everything a folk healer does is occult. A remedy of herbs is simply folk medicine, and there is no sin in a tea. But curanderismo seldom stops at herbs; it moves quickly to the limpia that cleanses by ritual and spirit, to the diagnosis given by divination, to the invoking of saints and spirits for supernatural power — and there it has crossed the line into the forbidden. Brujería crosses it openly: the spell, the hex, the amarre that binds another's will in love or lust, the curse laid on an enemy, the "work" purchased from a brujo to bend the world by dark power. And with these travels the whole trade of divination — the cards, the tarot, the reading of palms and eggs and signs to uncover the future. Scripture does not treat these as harmless games. It names sorcery among the works of the flesh that shut men out of the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21), and it lists the sorcerer among those outside the city of God forever (Revelation 21:8; 22:15).
Mungu Anasema NiniWhat God Says
When we turn to the Word of God, there is no ambiguity, and no gentleness for the practice itself. In one place God gathers nearly the whole of this dark world into a single list and pronounces His verdict: "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you" (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). Read it slowly. Every branch of folk religion we have named is there — witchcraft, divination, spells, mediums, calling up the dead — and every one of them God calls an abomination. It was for these very practices that He drove the nations out of the land in judgment. The command runs from one end of Scripture to the other: "Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits" (Leviticus 19:31); "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus 20:3). This is not one option among many that happens to be inferior. It is rebellion against God, and He calls it what it is.
Nguvu Hizi Ni Halisi — na Tayari ZimeshindwaThe Powers Are Real — and Already Defeated
Kifo kile kile ambacho watu wanakiabudu, Yeye amekishinda; hofu ile ile inayowafanya watumwa, Yeye anaivunja.Someone will object that all of this is mere superstition, that the amulets and spells have no power and so do no harm. Scripture does not grant the comfort of that objection. Behind the idols, Paul says, stand demons: "the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God" (1 Corinthians 10:20). The traffic is real; that is precisely why it is dangerous, and why those who dabble in it are not playing but binding themselves. But now hear the gospel, and hear it as the thunder of victory it is. The powers that folk religion fears and flatters, Christ has already conquered. On the cross, "having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it" (Colossians 2:15). "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil" (1 John 3:8). And to the fear that drives a frightened woman to the altar of Santa Muerte — the fear of death itself — the answer is Christ, who shared our flesh and blood "that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage" (Hebrews 2:14-15). The very death people worship, He has defeated; the very fear that enslaves them, He breaks.
Uhuru, Si Uchawi Wenye Nguvu ZaidiFreedom, Not a Stronger Spell
Hatuombi tumwongeze Yeye kwenye nguvu zetu nyingine. Anatuamuru tuwe huru mbali nazo.We must be clear about what the gospel offers, for it is easy to misunderstand. We do not come to the Santa Muerte devotee or the client of the brujo offering a stronger charm, a more powerful saint, a better spell to fight the old ones. The gospel is not superior magic. It is a finished victory, into which a person enters not by bargaining but by surrender — not by paying a price to a power, but by trusting the One who has already paid and already won. And that entrance requires a clean break. When the Ephesians turned to Christ, those who had practiced magic "brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all" (Acts 19:19) — a fortune in occult books turned to ash, because a soul cannot serve two masters, and Christ will not share an altar with demons. So it must be still: the amulets renounced, the images removed, the practices forsaken, the whole allegiance handed over to Christ alone. He does not ask us to add Him to our other powers. He commands us to be free of them.
Let no one mistake this plainness for hardness toward people. The sharpest words in this unit are aimed at the darkness, never at the frightened soul bound by it. Those who turn to folk religion are, so often, the ones the world has failed — the poor who cannot pay a doctor, the sick who have run out of hope, the mother terrified for a son in danger, the abandoned who found no help in any church. We do not sneer at them; we grieve for them, because they are seeking protection from what can only destroy them, and paying the enemy for the privilege. To them we bring not a rival superstition but the living God — who actually hears, who actually heals, who actually protects, and who has actually conquered the death and the powers they fear — and He gives freely, with no price and no bargain. This is the most urgent evangelism of all, for it is the freeing of captives. We go to them, then, with clear truth and deep compassion, longing to see the chains fall and the fear lifted, and the one who bowed to death stand upright in the life of Christ.
