— Yakobo 1:27 (SUV)"Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble..." — James 1:27 (NKJV)

Tunachohifadhi.

In Unit 5 the families were assigned and introduced. The deacon has met the families given to him, and the relationship has begun. But an introduction is only a beginning. Now comes the work that makes the Plan more than a paper arrangement — the ongoing, year-round ministry by which the deacon actually cares for the families entrusted to him. That ongoing care flows mainly through two channels: the deacon goes to his families, and he prays for them.

Why must the care be ongoing? Because care that arrives only in a crisis is too little and too late. The relationship must be kept alive between the troubles, so that when trouble finally comes the deacon is already a trusted friend and not a stranger knocking at the door. Pure religion, James tells us, visits the widow and the orphan in their trouble — and it is the deacon who has visited all along who will be welcome when the trouble comes.

Subject: the ongoing care of the deacon for his families.

Proposition: The deacon cares for his families continually through two great ministries — the ministry of visitation, by which he goes to them, and the ministry of prayer, by which he carries them to God — and he sustains both by faithfulness through the years.

Basi, tunashughulikia huduma hizi mbili, na uaminifu unaozishikilia. We take up, then, these two ministries, and the faithfulness that holds them up.

I. Huduma ya Kutembelea: Kwa Nini Shemasi AnakwendaI. The Ministry of Visitation: Why the Deacon Goes

The first and most visible work of ongoing care is visitation — going to the people where they are. This is no mere church custom; it runs deep in Scripture. James makes it the very heart of pure religion: to visit the orphan and the widow in their trouble. And the Lord Himself makes visiting the sick and the imprisoned a mark of true love for Him.

nalikuwa uchi, mkanivika; nalikuwa mgonjwa, mkaja kunitazama; nalikuwa kifungoni, mkaja kwangu... Amin, nawaambia, Kadiri mlivyomtendea mmojawapo wa hawa ndugu zangu walio wadogo, mlinitendea mimi. (Mathayo 25:36, 40, SUV)I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me... Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me. (Matthew 25:36, 40, NKJV)

To visit the least is to minister to Christ Himself. This was also the apostolic pattern, for Paul taught not only publicly but “from house to house” (Acts 20:20); the gospel goes to where people actually live. And there is something deeply fitting about going in person, for it follows the way of God Himself. He did not merely send a message from heaven; He sent His Son to dwell among us. A card is kind and a telephone call is good, but to show up — to be present in the living room, at the hospital bed, in the funeral home — embodies the love of Christ as nothing else can. The deacon goes because his Lord went.

Wala shemasi asidharau kamwe kile ambacho ziara moja inaweza kufanya. Nor should the deacon ever underestimate what a single visit can do. To a person lying ill and afraid, to a widow sitting alone in a quiet house, to a family stunned by sudden loss, the knock at the door that says ‘the church has not forgotten you’ can be a lifeline. People remember for years the deacon who came when they were low. The visit preaches a sermon no pulpit can: that they are loved, that they belong, and that they are not alone.

II. Huduma ya Kutembelea: Anamtembelea Nani, na Mara NgapiII. The Ministry of Visitation: Whom He Visits, and How Often

Shemasi anamtembelea nani? Whom does the deacon visit? In one sense, all of his families. The whole point of the Plan is that every family has ongoing contact, not merely the few who speak up, so the deacon keeps in regular touch with each one, that none be forgotten. Yet certain people need special and prompt attention.

He goes to the sick and the shut-in, for those who cannot come to the church need the church to come to them — in the hospital, the nursing home, or the house they can no longer leave. He goes to the bereaved, who need a steady presence in their grief. He goes to the absent and the drifting, with a visit before the back door quietly closes. He goes to the new and the lonely — the newcomer to be welcomed, the widow or the single person easily overlooked. And he goes in times of joy as well: a new baby, a graduation, a milestone, for the deacon is to rejoice with those who rejoice and not only weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15).

Anakwenda mara ngapi? How often does he go? Regularly enough that the relationship stays alive. The exact rhythm will vary from family to family, but the principle is steady, ongoing contact — not a single visit at the start followed by years of silence. A faithful deacon's families hear from him through the year, in good seasons and bad, so that he is always near at hand.

It is worth saying that the ordinary, uneventful visit is the foundation of all the rest. A deacon who only appears in emergencies will always feel like a stranger when he comes; but one who has shared coffee and conversation in calmer days has earned the right to be present in the hard ones. The quiet visits, when nothing is wrong, are what make the urgent visits welcome.

III. Huduma ya Kutembelea: Jinsi ya Kutembelea VizuriIII. The Ministry of Visitation: How to Visit Well

A visit may be done well or poorly, and a few simple principles make the difference. The deacon goes warmly and humbly, as a servant and not as an inspector. The visit is about them, not about him; he comes to listen far more than to talk, to learn their needs and to know their hearts.

Mfano. Illustration. Often the greatest gift a visitor can bring is simply to be there. When Job's friends first came to him, they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights and said not a word, “for they saw that his grief was very great” (Job 2:13). In that silence they ministered well; it was only later, when they opened their mouths, that they went wrong. A deacon need not arrive with clever words or ready answers. His presence, his listening ear, and his quiet sympathy will often say far more than any speech.

The deacon also brings the Lord into the visit. A word of Scripture and a prayer, fitted gently to the moment, turn a friendly call into a means of grace, for he comes not merely as a neighbor but as a servant of Christ. He guards confidentiality strictly: what is shared within the home stays there, a matter we will weigh more fully in Unit 8, for a deacon who carries tales destroys the very trust his ministry depends upon. He knows, too, when to leave; a visit need not be long, and an unhurried but not endless call is a blessing, while overstaying only wearies. And he avoids the common pitfalls — prying into what is not offered, filling the time with his own stories, or turning a family's sorrow into gossip afterward.

Jambo moja zaidi linaitofautisha ziara nzuri: haiishii mlangoni. One thing more sets a good visit apart: it does not end at the door. The deacon who notices a need carries it away with him — to pray over it, to mention it (with care) to the pastor, to return with help if help is needed. A visit that merely passes the time is pleasant; a visit that leads to real ministry is what the Plan is for.

IV. Huduma ya MaombiIV. The Ministry of Prayer

If visitation is the deacon's most visible work, prayer is his most powerful. Here he carries his families, one by one, into the presence of God. The deacon prays for his families by name; and to pray for them by name he must know them — their burdens, their sicknesses, their struggles and their joys — so that his prayer is specific and real and not a vague good wish. He prays with them as well: in the visit, at the bedside, in the hour of crisis, a prayer offered aloud brings the comfort and the power of God right into the room.

Na nabii Samweli alihesabu kuwa dhambi hata kuacha:The priority of prayer stands very high. When the apostles appointed the seven, they reserved for themselves “prayer and the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4) — and they named prayer first. Epaphras “always labored fervently” in prayers for his people (Colossians 4:12). And the prophet Samuel counted it a sin even to stop:

(1 Samweli 12:23, SUV)Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way. (1 Samuel 12:23, NKJV)

For the deacon, to cease praying for his families would be to fail them at the deepest level of all. He cannot always fix their troubles; but he can always pray, and very often the praying accomplishes more than any fixing could. Let no deacon think that prayer is the least he can do for his families. In truth it is the most.

The deacon's praying need not be solitary, either. As he learns the needs of his families, he can bring them — carefully, and only as far as is fitting — before the prayers of the other deacons and, where appropriate, the whole church, so that many hands are lifted for one burdened home. In this way the care of a single deacon opens into the intercession of the entire body.

V. Waaminifu kwa Miaka YoteV. Faithful Through the Years

These two ministries are sustained by a single virtue: faithfulness. The danger to ongoing care is rarely a bad beginning; it is a slow fading — visits that grow rare, prayers that grow vague, until at last the family is forgotten again and the back door stands open once more.

Hivyo ndivyo utunzaji unaoendelea unavyokuwa hatimaye.Faithfulness is what keeps the ministry alive: regular contact maintained, a simple record of visits and needs kept up as Unit 5 urged, and a steady refusal to grow weary in the work. “Let us not grow weary while doing good,” Paul wrote, “for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (Galatians 6:9). The reward of such faithfulness is a ministry that deepens over the years into a trusted bond — a deacon who has walked with his families through sickness and health, through birth and death, until they would think to call him first in any trouble. That is what ongoing care finally becomes.

Much of this faithfulness goes unseen. No crowd applauds the deacon who drives across town on a cold night to sit with a dying saint, or who prays, year upon year, for a family that never knows it. But it is seen by the One who matters, who has promised that the cup of cold water given in His name will not lose its reward. The faithful deacon labors for an audience of One.

HitimishoConclusion

The introduction of Unit 5 only opened the door; ongoing care is the walking through it, again and again, year after year. The deacon goes to his families and he prays for his families, and he keeps doing both, faithfully, when it is convenient and when it is not. Everything else in the Plan rests upon this steady, unglamorous, Christlike work.

Programs may come and go, and methods may be improved, but nothing will ever replace a caring man at the door and a praying man on his knees. Where those two are found, the Plan is alive; where they are missing, no amount of organization can make up the lack.

The deacon who faithfully visits and prays is practicing the purest kind of religion there is — the very care of Christ, carried to every home. With this rhythm of care established, we turn in Unit 7 to a deeper purpose hidden within it: how the deacon, even as he visits and prays, also disciples and evangelizes the families given into his care.
