Tunachohifadhi.

We have followed the deacon through the assigning of his families, the ongoing care of visitation and prayer, and the spiritual work of discipleship and evangelism. But sooner or later every family meets a crisis — a sudden illness, a death, a financial blow, a family rupture, a collapse of faith. It is in these dark hours that the deacon's ministry is most needed and most deeply felt. This unit takes up the deacon in crisis: how he ministers when trouble strikes, how he guards what is told him in confidence, and how he wisely knows his own limits and refers.

Subject: the deacon's ministry in crisis, his guarding of confidence, and his wisdom in referral.

Proposition: When crisis comes to his families, the deacon ministers with presence and practical help, guards as sacred what is told him in confidence, and humbly refers what lies beyond him to the pastor and to others fit to help.

We will consider the deacon's ministry in crisis — in sickness and death, and in other troubles — then the sacred trust of confidentiality, and finally the wisdom of referral.

I. Saa Bora Kabisa ya ShemasiI. The Deacon's Finest Hour

A crisis is often the deacon's finest hour. In ordinary days his care is welcome; in a crisis it becomes a lifeline. When the worst happens, people remember who came. The crisis is precisely the moment when a burden grows too heavy to carry alone, and the deacon steps in to help shoulder it. A few principles guide him in any crisis. He comes, and he comes quickly, for the first and greatest thing is simply to be there; trouble rarely sends an invitation, so the deacon does not wait to be asked. He brings calm and he brings Christ, a steady presence and, above all, the comfort of God.

(2 Wakorintho 1:3–4, SUV)Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (2 Corinthians 1:3–4, NKJV)

Shemasi huzipa familia zake faraja ile ile ambayo yeye mwenyewe ameipokea kutoka kwa Mungu. Tena huleta msaada wa vitendo. The deacon passes on to his families the very comfort he has himself received from God. And he brings practical help.

Kielelezo. Illustration. When a crisis strikes, a family is often simply paralyzed, unable to think what must be done next. The deacon who quietly takes up the practical tasks — making the phone calls, arranging the meals, driving to the hospital, keeping the household running — frees the family to grieve and to lean on God. In the crisis he becomes the calm and capable hands of the whole church.

Na katika yote hayo huwaelekeza kwa Bwana, aliye karibu nao waliovunjika moyo (Zaburi 34:18).Nor does he carry it alone. He mobilizes the wider body — the other deacons, the ministries of the church, its benevolence — so that the family is surrounded and upheld. And through it all he points them to the Lord, who is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

Tahadhari moja inafaa hapa. In a crisis the deacon is tempted to explain the tragedy, to answer the unanswerable ‘why,’ or to rush the family toward feeling better. He should resist. The grieving do not need a lecture on the ways of God; they need a brother who will sit with them, weep with them, and quietly trust God on their behalf when they cannot. Often the wisest thing the deacon can say is very little, and the kindest thing he can do is simply stay.

II. Kuhudumu Wakati wa Ugonjwa na KifoII. Ministering in Sickness and Death

The two heaviest crises are sickness and death, and here the deacon's ministry is most tested and most precious. In times of sickness, he goes to the hospital and the sickbed; he brings comfort, prays, reads a portion of Scripture, and stands by. When the illness is grave, he calls the pastor, for the church's ministry to the sick belongs first to the pastor and the elders, who are to pray over the sick (James 5:14); and he helps the family bear the heavy practical load that serious illness always brings.

To sit beside the dying and their loved ones is holy ground. The deacon need not arrive with answers; he brings his presence, his prayers, and the hope of Christ, who has conquered death. To a dying believer he may speak gently of the Lord who waits on the other side. And when death comes, in bereavement he weeps with those who weep (Romans 12:15). He helps with the hundred practical needs of those first days, he stands with the family through the funeral, and — most importantly — he keeps caring through the long, lonely weeks afterward, when the crowds have gone home and only the grief remains. Grief does not end at the graveside, and neither does the faithful deacon's care.

Indeed, some of the deacon's most valued visits come weeks or months after the funeral, when the casseroles have stopped and the cards have ceased and the bereaved must learn to live with an empty chair. A call on the first birthday without a spouse, a visit near the anniversary of a death — these say, more loudly than any words, that the loss has not been forgotten and that the church still remembers and still cares.

III. Kuhudumu Wakati wa Taabu na ShidaIII. Ministering in Hardship and Trouble

Not every crisis is sickness or death; families meet other blows, and the deacon ministers in these as well. In material and financial need — a lost job, a sudden bill, an empty cupboard — the deacon's original calling shines, for this is the very work of Acts 6. He helps discreetly, guarding the family's dignity, and draws on the church's benevolence, distributing to the needs of the saints (Romans 12:13). In family conflict — a marriage under strain, a prodigal child, a broken relationship — he listens, encourages, and prays, while knowing when a matter must go to the pastor or a counselor. In spiritual crisis — doubt, despair, a believer overtaken in some sin, a faith shaken by suffering — he comes alongside gently, not to condemn but to restore in a spirit of meekness (Galatians 6:1), pointing the struggler back to Christ. And in sudden disaster — an accident, a fire, a calamity — he rallies the church's help around the stricken home. Through every kind of trouble the old proverb holds: a friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity (Proverbs 17:17). The deacon is meant to be exactly that friend and brother.

In all these troubles the deacon must also use discernment, for not every kind of help is truly helpful. Mercy that simply funds a destructive habit, or rescues a person from every consequence of his own choices, can do more harm than good. The deacon learns to help in a way that lifts a family toward standing on its own, rather than fostering a dependence that weakens them. Love is not the same as indulgence.

IV. Dhamana Takatifu ya UsiriIV. The Sacred Trust of Confidentiality

Crisis ministry carries the deacon into the private places of people's lives, and with that access comes a sacred trust: confidentiality. People will tell their deacon things they would tell no one else — their sins, their fears, their family secrets, their shame — and they do so only because they trust him. The moment that trust is betrayed, his ministry is finished.

Mwenye kuchongea hutembea akitangaza siri; bali mwenye roho ya uaminifu husitiri neno. (Mithali 11:13, SUV)A talebearer reveals secrets, but he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter. (Proverbs 11:13, NKJV)

Shemasi lazima awe mtu mwenye roho ya uaminifu, anayesitiri yale aliyokabidhiwa. The deacon must be a man of a faithful spirit, one who conceals what is entrusted to him.

Kielelezo. Illustration. Gossip is cunning, and it often disguises itself as concern. “We really must pray for the So-and-so family — did you hear that he...” is gossip dressed in the clothing of a prayer request. The faithful deacon learns to pray for his families without broadcasting their troubles, and to share a need only as far as is genuinely necessary and right.

Yet confidentiality has its limits, for it is never a shield for danger or for crime. There are things the deacon must not keep secret. When a life is at risk — when someone speaks of taking their own life, or threatens harm to another — he must act at once, bringing the matter to the pastor and to those able to help. And when a child is being harmed or abused, he must never stay silent to protect the one doing harm; he must bring it to the pastor and to the proper authorities. To keep silence then is not faithfulness but complicity. Wisdom learns the difference between a confidence that must be kept and a danger that must be reported.

Lengo kamwe si kuiaibisha familia, bali kuwapatia msaada wanaouhitaji huku ikilinda heshima yao kadiri inavyowezekana kabisa kuilinda.Even within these bounds, discretion remains the rule. When the deacon must bring a confidence to the pastor, he tells only what is needful and only to the one who needs to know, not to the whole circle of deacons as common news. The aim is never to expose a family, but to get them the help they require while protecting their dignity as far as it can possibly be protected.

V. Hekima ya Kuwapeleka Watu kwa WengineV. The Wisdom of Referral

Finally, the good deacon knows the limits of his own competence. He is a caring layman, not a trained physician, a professional counselor, a lawyer, or even the pastor. Some needs lie beyond him, and the loving thing is then to refer.

This is no admission of failure. As the proverb says, “in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14); to bring in others is simple wisdom. He refers to the pastor for the deeper things — serious spiritual crises, hard doctrinal questions, matters that need the pastor's training or authority, the ministry of the elders to the sick. The deacon is the pastor's helper, not his replacement, and part of helping well is knowing when to hand a matter up. He refers to others fit to help for what truly requires them — a physician for serious illness, a trained counselor for deep depression or a failing marriage, a lawyer for legal trouble, the proper authorities for danger or crime. A deacon who pretends to an expertise he does not have can do real harm; a deacon who refers wisely protects the very people he loves.

But referral is never abandonment. Having brought in the pastor or the professional, the deacon does not vanish from the scene; he stays alongside, still caring, still praying, still present. He hands off the part of the burden that is beyond him, while keeping firm hold of the part that is always his — to love.

Seen rightly, then, a wise referral is not the deacon caring less but caring more. It would be a poor love that let a man drown rather than admit it could not swim. The deacon who knows his limits, and humbly brings the right help to bear, loves his family better than the proud one who tries to be everything and ends by failing them when it matters most.

HitimishoConclusion

Dharura humdhihirisha shemasi. The crisis reveals the deacon. When the dark hour comes, the faithful deacon is there — bearing the burden, bringing the comfort of God, quietly handling what must be handled, guarding what must be kept secret, and wisely calling for help where help is truly needed. He cannot prevent the storms that come to his families, but he can make sure that no family faces them alone.

This, in the end, is what the church is for — not merely to gather on Sundays, but to be present in the valley. And in the valley, the deacon is the church with a face and a name, kneeling beside the bed, sitting in the waiting room, standing at the graveside, so that a hurting family can see and touch the love of Christ.

There is no purer fulfillment of that law than a deacon standing beside a family in its very worst hour. Yet the deacon does not labor alone, nor unaccountable. How the deacons meet together, report their work, and relate to the pastor — the structure that supports and watches over all this ministry — is the subject we take up in Unit 9.
