Tunachohifadhi.

So far we have watched the deacon at work largely as an individual — caring for his own families, visiting, praying, discipling, and ministering in crisis. But the deacon never labors in isolation. He is one of a band of deacons, all serving under one pastor, and the strength of the whole Plan depends on how well that band works together, and how well it works with its pastor. This unit takes up the supporting structure of the Plan itself: how the deacons meet, how they report their work, and how they relate to their pastor.

Subject: the deacons meeting together, reporting their work, and relating to their pastor.

Proposition: The Plan is held together and held up by deacons who meet as a spiritual body, faithfully report the care of their families, and stand with their pastor as his servants and helpers, in unity.

We will consider the deacons' meeting and its conduct, the ministry of reporting, and then the deacon's partnership with his pastor and his duty to uphold him.

I. Mashemasi Pamoja: Kusudi la MkutanoI. The Deacons Together: The Purpose of the Meeting

The deacons meet regularly as a body, for the care of a whole congregation can never be coordinated by men who never confer. The meeting is the heartbeat of the Plan — the place where the work is reviewed, the needs are shared, the condition of the families is taken, and the men encourage and pray for one another. But it is vital to see what the meeting is not. It is not chiefly a business session, and the deacons are not a board of directors running the church. Above all else, their meeting is a report on souls.

Kielelezo. Illustration. Picture two deacon meetings. In the first, the whole hour is spent debating the color of the new carpet and the setting of the thermostat. In the second, the men go around the table, and one says, “The Hendersons buried their father this week”; another, “Young Tommy has stopped coming”; a third, “The Garcias are out of work.” And at each name they stop and pray. The second is what a deacon meeting under this Plan is meant to be. The carpet has its place, but souls come first.

Gathered together, the deacons see what no single one of them could see alone, for “in the multitude of counselors” plans are established (Proverbs 15:22). It is in the meeting that the whole flock is surveyed, and the body makes sure that not one family has been left without care.

II. Jinsi Mkutano UnavyoendeshwaII. The Conduct of the Meeting

A deacon meeting should bear the marks of a spiritual gathering and not merely those of a committee. It is bathed in prayer, opened with it and saturated by it, as the men pray for their families by name, for their pastor, and for their church. It is orderly, so that all things are done decently and in order (1 Corinthians 14:40) and the time is spent well rather than wasted. Its true agenda is the families: each deacon's report, the needs that have arisen, and the plans to meet them. Business matters are handled in their place, but they must never be allowed to crowd out the care of souls.

The meeting is also a place of mutual encouragement, where the deacons strengthen one another, bear one another's burdens, and hold one another accountable in love. The work is hard and sometimes discouraging, and the meeting is where the men are refreshed and steadied for it. And throughout, the meeting observes confidentiality. What is shared there is shared for the sake of care and prayer, never as gossip, and the deepest confidences entrusted to a deacon are guarded even among his brothers.

How often the deacons meet will vary from church to church, but the meeting must be regular, not occasional. A body that gathers only when a crisis forces it will always be behind the need; one that meets faithfully stays ahead of it, catching small troubles before they grow large. The regular meeting is to the deacon body what the regular visit is to the single family — the steady rhythm that keeps the care alive.

III. Huduma ya Kutoa TaarifaIII. The Ministry of Reporting

At the center of the meeting is reporting: each deacon gives an account of the families in his care. This is the great safeguard of the Plan's central promise — that no family is forgotten. When each man reports, the body can see at a glance whether every family is truly being cared for, and can catch in time the one who has begun to slip through the cracks.

What does the deacon report? The condition and needs of his families — who is sick, who is grieving, who has been absent, who is in need, who has a joy to share — so that the care can be coordinated and the pastor informed of what requires him. And how does he report? Faithfully and honestly, yet always within the bounds of confidentiality. He reports what is needed for care and prayer — “Mrs. Allen is in the hospital; let us pray and send help” — and not the private confidences trusted to him alone. There is a world of difference between sharing a need and betraying a secret.

Good reporting rests upon faithful work. A deacon who has kept current records, as Unit 5 urged, and who has actually visited his families, as Unit 6 required, will have something true to report; a deacon who has done neither will have nothing, and his families will quietly suffer. Reporting, then, is not mere paperwork but loving accountability — the gentle, brotherly pressure that keeps every deacon actually doing the work he promised. And it keeps the pastor informed, for he cannot possibly know every need in a large congregation; through his deacons' reports, he learns where his own shepherding is most needed.

Honest reporting also means a deacon must be willing to admit when he has fallen behind. It is tempting to report only successes and to hide the family one has neglected; but the whole point of reporting is to catch exactly such gaps. A deacon who can humbly say, ‘I have not reached the Watsons this month; I need help,’ serves his families far better than one who covers his failures with a good report. The meeting is not a place to look good, but a place to make sure no one is missed.

IV. Shemasi na Mchungaji Wake: UshirikianoIV. The Deacon and His Pastor: A Partnership

All of this — the meeting, the reporting, the care — exists in relationship to the pastor, and the deacon-pastor relationship is the keystone of the whole Plan. At its heart it is the partnership of Acts 6, where the seven took up the practical care so that the apostles could give themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word. The deacon's very reason for being is to free and to support his pastor in the work God has given him. He is the pastor's helper, never his rival and never his boss; he extends the pastor's care into homes the pastor could never reach alone, carries to the pastor the needs that require him, and lightens the pastor's heavy load.

(Waebrania 13:17, SUV)Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. (Hebrews 13:17, NKJV)

Watu wawili waweza kutembea pamoja, isipokuwa wamepatana?” (Amosi 3:3). Mahali ambapo mchungaji na mashemasi wamepatana na kuungana, kanisa lina nguvu; mahali ambapo wako vitani, kanisa hupasuka. The deacon, of all the people in the church, should be the one who makes his pastor's work a joy and not a grief. Churches differ in how they assign authority among the pastor, the deacons, and the congregation; but whatever the structure, the biblical posture of a deacon toward his pastor is always that of a servant and a supporter, not a ruler. And the two must walk together, for as the prophet asked, “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3). Where pastor and deacons are agreed and united, the church is strong; where they are at war, the church is torn.

This does not mean a deacon may never disagree with his pastor. Honest counsel is part of his service, and a wise pastor welcomes it. But there is a vast difference between a deacon who brings his concerns privately, humbly, and directly to his pastor, and one who spreads them through the congregation to gather a faction. The first strengthens the church; the second wounds it. Disagreement voiced in love and in private is a gift; dissent sown in secret is a poison.

V. Kumtegemeza na Kumlinda MchungajiV. Supporting and Protecting the Pastor

This leads to the deacon's special and sacred duty: to support and protect his pastor. The Scripture gives a beautiful picture of it.

(Kutoka 17:12, SUV)But Moses' hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. (Exodus 17:12, NKJV)

As Aaron and Hur held up the arms of Moses, one on each side, until the battle was won, so the deacons are to hold up the hands of their pastor. They do this in several ways. They hold him up by encouragement, for the pastor's work is lonely and often thankless, and a deacon's word of cheer and his faithful prayer can sustain a weary man. They hold him up by sharing his burdens, taking practical loads from his shoulders, standing beside him in hard decisions, and praying for him without fail. They hold him up by defending him, for a pastor is frequently the target of unjust criticism, and the deacon does not join the grumblers but stands up for his pastor and refuses to carry a single tale against him. And they hold him up by guarding the unity of the church, working as peacemakers to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3), quenching gossip and division before they can spread.

The gravest danger to a church is often a deacon body that turns against its own pastor, becoming a center of opposition and control rather than of support — the very drift from servanthood that we warned of long ago. The faithful deacon will be the last man to oppose his pastor and the first to uphold him. When the deacons hold up the pastor's hands, the whole church prevails.

Few things so gladden a faithful pastor's heart as a band of deacons he can trust at his back. Many a discouraged minister has been kept in the ministry, and many a struggling church turned toward health, simply because a handful of deacons quietly decided to hold up their pastor's hands instead of weighing them down. It is a hidden ministry, but its fruit is everywhere visible in a happy, peaceful, growing church.

HitimishoConclusion

The Plan is not a collection of lone deacons working in their separate corners; it is a body of servants, laboring together and laboring under one pastor, in unity. The meeting binds them together, the reporting keeps them faithful, and the partnership with the pastor gives the whole its strength and its order. Take away any one of these and the Plan begins to fail; hold all three together, and it stands.

And these three are finally one, for they are all the work of love — love among the deacons, love toward the families reported on, and love toward the pastor upheld. The structure exists only to serve the care, and the care exists only to carry the love of Christ to His people.

Sasa imebaki sehemu moja. Kila kazi njema hukutana na changamoto na lazima itathminiwe na kufanywa upya ikiwa itadumu, na kwa hiyo katika sehemu yetu ya mwisho tunauliza jinsi Mpango unavyoweza kudumishwa kwa miaka mingi.“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” A church in which pastor and deacons dwell and labor together in such unity is a church where the Plan — and far more than the Plan — will flourish. One unit now remains. Every good work meets challenges and must be evaluated and renewed if it is to last, and so in our final unit we ask how the Plan can be sustained through the years.
