On the night of November 23, 1654, in a quiet Paris house, the brilliant young French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal sat down at a desk. He was thirty-one years old. He had already invented the mechanical calculator. He had laid the foundations of probability theory. He had begun the work in physics that still bears his name (the pascal, the unit of pressure). He was famous and tired and not satisfied.
Kuanzia takriban saa 4:30 usiku hadi takriban saa 6:30 usiku wa manane, kwa saa mbili zilizovunja maisha yake kuwa sehemu mbili, Pascal alipata jambo ambalo hakumweleza mtu yeyote kamwe. Hatujui aliona nini. Hatujui alisikia nini. Hatujui alielewa nini. From about 10:30 in the evening until about 12:30 in the morning, for two hours that broke his life in half, Pascal experienced something he never explained to anyone. We do not know what he saw. We do not know what he heard. We do not know what he understood. We only know what he wrote on a small scrap of parchment in the fever of those two hours. He wrote one word at the top of the page, in capital letters: FIRE. Then he wrote, in scattered phrases, what he had been given. "God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob — not of the philosophers and scholars. Certitude. Certitude. Feeling. Joy. Peace. The God of Jesus Christ... Forgetfulness of the world and of everything except God. He is to be found only by the ways taught in the Gospel..."
When the two hours were over, Pascal folded the parchment, slipped it inside the lining of his coat, and stitched it shut. He wore that coat every day for the remaining eight years of his life. He never spoke of what had happened. He told no one. Only after his death in 1662, when a servant was preparing his coat for burial, did anyone discover the small folded paper sewn over Pascal's heart. He had spent the rest of his life carrying a private record of his encounter with the holy God against his chest.
"MOTO. Uhakika. Uhakika. Hisia. Furaha. Amani." — Kumbukumbu (Memorial) ya Pascal, 23 Novemba 1654"FIRE. Certitude. Certitude. Feeling. Joy. Peace." Moto. Utakatifu. Uwepo wa Mungu. Why does this open Unit 5? Because what Pascal encountered in Paris in 1654, Isaiah encountered in Jerusalem about 740 BC. Both men were brilliant. Both men were already religious. Both men met the holy God in a way that broke their lives in half. Pascal wrote down "FIRE." Isaiah wrote down what the angels cried out, three times in a single Hebrew word: qadosh, qadosh, qadosh. The fiery ones — the seraphim, whose name means "burning ones" — were shouting the very word Pascal scrawled in capital letters across the top of his Memorial. Fire. Holiness. The presence of God.
Tunachofanya katika sehemu hiiWhat we are doing in this unit
You finished Unit 4 with six Hebrew words from Genesis 1 in your notebook: Bereshit, Bara, Elohim, Ruach, Or, Adam. In Unit 5 you will add seven more. Three of them come straight out of the Isaiah 6 throne-room vision — qadosh, kavod, YHWH. The other four are the great covenant words that fill out the picture of who this holy God is and how He deals with His people — chesed, shalom, torah, berit. By the end of this unit you will own thirteen Hebrew words. That is enough to read your Old Testament in a way most Christians never do.
I. Qadosh + Kavod — Kilio Pacha cha Chumba cha Kiti cha EnziI. Qadosh + Kavod — The Twin Cry of the Throne Room
Kilicho kitakatifu katika Kiebrania ni kile ambacho Mungu amekikata kutoka katika mambo ya kawaida na kukiweka wakfu kwa ajili yake mwenyewe: nchi takatifu (kichaka kilichowaka moto), siku takatifu (Sabato), mahali patakatifu (hekalu), watu watakatifu (Israeli), Mungu mtakatifu (juu ya haya yote).Qadosh begins with the letter Qof — the deep guttural "q" you met in Unit 3, the sound that comes from the back of the throat. Hebrew holiness rumbles. The root meaning is "to be cut off, to be set apart, to be separated." What is holy in Hebrew is what God has cut out of the ordinary and dedicated to Himself: holy ground (the burning bush), holy days (the Sabbath), holy place (the temple), holy people (Israel), holy God (above all of these).
And here is the wonder of Isaiah 6:3. Hebrew has no grammatical form for the superlative. There is no Hebrew word for "more holy" or "holiest." Hebrew expresses the absolute superlative by repetition. To call a song "song of songs" is to say it is the greatest of songs. To call a heaven "heaven of heavens" is to say it is the highest heaven. So when the seraphim cry qadosh, qadosh, qadosh — three times in a row — they are saying the most that Hebrew grammar can say. God is not just holy, not just very holy, not just unspeakably holy. God is holy-holy-holy. The triple repetition is the absolute maximum holiness Hebrew language can express.
It is the only attribute of God anywhere in Scripture repeated three times. The Bible never says "love, love, love" or "good, good, good" or "wise, wise, wise" about God. It says qadosh, qadosh, qadosh. Holiness is the attribute the angels cannot get over. Long Christian tradition has heard in the threefold cry a quiet reflection of the Trinity — one cry of holiness for each Person. Strong's H6918. Look it up; qadosh appears about a hundred times in the Old Testament, and every time you read "holy" applied to God in English, you are reading this word.
Angalia kinachotokea mwishoni mwa Isaya 6:3. Mzizi wa Kiebrania unamaanisha "kuwa mzito."Watch what happens at the end of Isaiah 6:3. After the seraphim cry qadosh, qadosh, qadosh, they finish the sentence: "m'lo kol-ha'aretz kevodo" — "the whole earth is full of His kavod." And here is what English translations cannot quite carry. The Hebrew word kavod does not mean "glory" the way English ears hear "glory" — some abstract shining brightness. The Hebrew root means "to be heavy."
Kavod ya Mungu ni uzito wake. Ukamilifu wa unene wake. Uzito wa nafsi yake. Uhalisi wake usiovumilika. The kavod of God is His weight. His density. His mass. His unbearable substance. To say "the whole earth is full of His kavod" is to say creation is dense with God, weighted with God, heavy with the presence of God. When Moses asked to see the kavod of God in Exodus 33, what he was asking to see was the unmediated weight of the divine self. When the kavod settled on the tabernacle in a cloud in Exodus 40, the people called the settled-down weight by a related word, the Shekinah, the dwelling-weight of God.
Lipeleke neno hili mbele hadi Agano Jipya. Take this word forward to the New Testament. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 4:17 that our present sufferings are working in us an "eternal weight of glory." The Greek there is doxa, but Paul, a Jew who knew his Hebrew, retains the Hebrew metaphor: an eternal weight. Paul is using the Hebrew theology of kavod in Greek words. Strong's H3519. Kavod appears about two hundred times in the Old Testament, and almost every time you read "glory" applied to God in English, you are reading this word about weight.
Qadosh tells you what God is in Himself. Kavod tells you what God weighs as He fills the earth.II. YHWH — Jina LisilotamkwaII. YHWH — The Unspoken Name
Fungua Biblia yako kwenye Isaya 6:5. YHWH. Tetragrammaton. Jina binafsi la Mungu.Open your English Bible to Isaiah 6:5. Isaiah cries, "Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts." Notice the strange typography. Most English Bibles print "the LORD" with the L large and the O-R-D in smaller capital letters. That special spelling is a clue. It tells you that in the Hebrew original, the word is not Adonai (the regular Hebrew word for "Lord"). It is the four-letter name: Yod-He-Vav-He. YHWH. The Tetragrammaton. The personal name of God.
Jina hili lilifunuliwa kwanza katika Kutoka 3:14 wakati Musa, akiwa amesimama bila viatu mbele ya kichaka kilichowaka moto, alipomwuliza Mungu jina lake. Mungu alijibu Ehyeh asher Ehyeh — "MIMI NIKO AMBAYE NIKO." Jina lake lenyewe linasema hivyo. This name was first revealed in Exodus 3:14 when Moses, standing barefoot before the burning bush, asked God His name. God answered Ehyeh asher Ehyeh — "I AM WHO I AM." From that Ehyeh, "I AM," the four-letter name YHWH is built. It is a name made from the Hebrew verb "to be." God is the One who simply is. He does not borrow His existence from another. He is not derived. He is not made. He is the self-existing, self-defining, eternal One. His very name says it.
Ilikuwa kutoelewa, lakini kutoelewa huko kulidumu.)The Jewish people considered this name so holy that, by the time of Jesus, no one spoke it aloud anymore. When a reader in the synagogue came to the four letters in his scroll, he did not pronounce them. He said instead the substitute word Adonai ("Lord"). When the Masoretes came along centuries later and added vowel pointings to the Hebrew Bible (Unit 3), they wrote the consonants of YHWH but added the vowels of Adonai — a sacred reminder to the reader to say "Adonai" rather than risk profaning the name. (The made-up English word "Jehovah" comes from someone in the Middle Ages combining the consonants of YHWH with the vowels of Adonai and reading the result as a single word. It was a misunderstanding, but the misunderstanding stuck.)
So this is the convention you will see across every Bible in the world. When English prints "the Lord" with small caps, that is YHWH. When English prints "Lord" normally, that is Adonai. When English prints "God" with regular capitals, that is Elohim. Three different Hebrew words, three different printed conventions. Now you can tell them apart. Strong's H3068 for YHWH; it appears almost seven thousand times in the Old Testament.
In Isaiah 6:5, the prophet sees the King, YHWH Tsevaot — "YHWH of armies" or "the LORD of hosts." The full divine name with the title of His angelic host attached. The seraphim are part of those armies. The one Isaiah saw on the throne was YHWH Himself, the I-AM-WHO-I-AM, the God of the burning bush, now seated above the temple in unbearable holiness.
III. Chesed — Upendo wa Agano wa MunguIII. Chesed — God's Covenant Love
Now we leave the throne room of Isaiah 6 and go to the great theological vocabulary that fills out who this holy God is. The first word is chesed — pronounced with the guttural Chet you met in Unit 2, the same letter that opens chai (life) and chokmah (wisdom).
Chesed is one of the most untranslatable words in the Hebrew Bible. It appears about two hundred and fifty times in the Old Testament, mostly in the Psalms. No single English word captures it. The King James translators tried "lovingkindness" — a compound word they coined precisely because no single English word would do. Modern translations try "steadfast love" (ESV), "faithful love" (HCSB), "loyal love," "mercy," "unfailing love." Every translation picks a different facet because chesed holds many facets in one syllable.
Ndiyo inayomfanya mume amsamehe mke aliyevunja nadhiri zake. Ndiyo inayomfanya Mungu amtume Hosea kumfuata Gomeri. Ndiyo inayomfanya Mungu atume manabii wake kwa Israeli asiye mwaminifu karne baada ya karne. At its heart, chesed is the kind of love that operates inside a covenant relationship and will not quit. It is not romance and it is not affection alone. It is love that has bound itself to another by promise, and that keeps the promise even when the other party fails to keep their side. Chesed is what makes covenant survive sin. It is what makes a husband forgive a wife who has broken her vows. It is what makes God send Hosea after Gomer. It is what makes God send His prophets to a faithless Israel century after century.
Psalm 136 is the great chesed Psalm. Twenty-six times in twenty-six verses the refrain returns: "for His chesed endures forever." Whatever happens — creation, plagues, Red Sea, wilderness, conquest, kings — the refrain answers: ki l'olam chasdo. "For His covenant love endures forever." It is one of the most repeated phrases in the entire Hebrew Old Testament. Hebrew chooses to drive this word in like a nail.
Strong's H2617. Strong's H2617. The next time you read in your English Bible "His lovingkindness endures forever," or "His steadfast love endures forever," or "His mercy endures forever," you are reading chesed — the word that says God's love is the kind that does not give up.
Chesed: the kind of love that does not give up because it has bound itself by promise.IV. Shalom — Ukamilifu wa MunguIV. Shalom — God's Wholeness
Huenda tayari unalijua neno hili. Shalom limejengwa juu ya mzizi shalem, unaomaanisha "kamili, zima, salama, lisiloharibika."You probably already know this word. Shalom is one of the most famous Hebrew words in the world. In modern Israel it is the everyday greeting — the way Americans say "hi" or "hello," Israelis say "shalom." But the Hebrew word is much larger than the English word "peace." Shalom is built on the root shalem, which means "complete, whole, sound, undamaged."
Mwili umepona. Familia imepatanishwa. Mazao yanakua. Haki imetendeka. Rafiki ana amani na rafiki. Nafsi ina amani na Mungu. Kila kipande kiko mahali pake panapostahili. Hiyo ndiyo shalom. What an English speaker hears in "peace" is mostly negative — the absence of conflict, quiet, calm. What a Hebrew speaker hears in shalom is positive — the presence of all-rightness. Shalom is not the silence after a battle. Shalom is what is left when a fractured world has been put back together. Body healed. Family reconciled. Crops growing. Justice done. Friend at peace with friend. Soul at peace with God. Every piece in its right place. That is shalom.
Marafiki Waisraeli wanapokutana, wakati mwingine huuliza "Mah shlomkha?" — kihalisi "Shalom yako ikoje?" Swali si "Je, umetulia?" Swali ni "Ustawi wako wote ukoje?"The greeting "Shalom" therefore means much more than "hi." It means "may all-rightness be on you." When Israeli friends meet, they sometimes ask "Mah shlomkha?" — literally "What is your shalom?" The question is not "Are you calm?" The question is "How is the whole of your well-being?"
The great Aaronic blessing in Numbers 6:24–26 ends with this word: "The LORD bless you and keep you... The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you shalom." The blessing climbs from "bless and keep" to "shine and be gracious" to "give shalom." Shalom is the highest gift in the priestly benediction — the wholeness that holds everything else.
Yule anayeuunganisha tena ulimwengu uliovunjika. And then the great Messianic title: Isaiah 9:6 announces that the coming Child will be called Sar Shalom, "Prince of Peace." Not just the prince of cease-fire. The Prince of every-piece-in-its-right-place. The One who reassembles a fractured world.
Strong's H7965.Take this word into the New Testament. John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you." The Greek word is eirênê (G1515), the Septuagint's standard translation of shalom. The peace Jesus gives is not Roman cease-fire. It is Hebrew wholeness. Strong's H7965.
V. Torah + Berit — Mafundisho na AganoV. Torah + Berit — Instruction and Covenant
Maelekezo hayo ndiyo torah.Torah is most often translated "law" in English Bibles, but the translation is misleading. The English word "law" has a courtroom feel: rules a judge enforces. Torah is much warmer than that. The Hebrew root is yarah, which means "to shoot, to aim, to point in a direction" — the same verb used for an archer firing an arrow. A torah is therefore not a legal code; it is an aim, a pointing, a fatherly direction-giving. A father shows his son how to live. That instruction is torah.
In a narrow sense, "the Torah" refers to the first five books of the Bible — Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy — the books Moses gave Israel as the foundation of life with God. In a wider sense, torah is all the instruction of God: His commands, His warnings, His promises, His teaching through psalmist and prophet. The whole Old Testament was sometimes called torah in shorthand.
"Torah yako naipenda mno ajabu, ndiyo kutafakari kwangu mchana kutwa" (Zaburi 119:97; SUV: "Sheria yako naipenda mno ajabu"). Hivyo ndivyo torah inavyosikika wakati Biblia yako imekupotosha ukasikia "sheria" tu.The towering biblical celebration of torah is Psalm 119 — the longest chapter in the Bible, one hundred and seventy-six verses, structured as an alphabetic acrostic. Eight verses for each of the twenty-two Hebrew letters you learned in Units 2 and 3. Every verse but two mentions God's torah or one of its synonyms (statutes, commandments, precepts, judgments). The Psalm is not the rant of a man bound by law. It is the love song of a man captivated by instruction. "Oh, how I love your torah! It is my meditation all the day" (Psalm 119:97). That is what torah sounds like when an English Bible has misled you into hearing only "law."
Strong's H8451. Litafute. Takriban mara mia mbili. Strong's H8451. Look it up. About two hundred occurrences. Every time you read "law" in the English Old Testament about God's law, hear torah: not a rulebook but a Father's instruction.
And here is the word that holds the whole Old Testament together. Berit means "covenant" — a binding agreement between two parties. Berit is the structural skeleton of biblical religion. The God of the Bible does not relate to His people through bare command, the way an emperor commands a subject. He relates to them by entering binding agreements that involve obligations on both sides and promises that cannot be broken. Every great phase of Old Testament history is anchored in a berit.
The Noahic berit: never again to destroy the earth with flood (Genesis 9). The Abrahamic berit: land, descendants, blessing for the nations (Genesis 15, 17). The Mosaic berit: Sinai, the Ten Words, Israel as God's people (Exodus 19–24). The Davidic berit: a throne forever (2 Samuel 7). The New berit: a heart of flesh, the Spirit inside, sins forgiven (Jeremiah 31:31–34). Five great covenants, each opening a new chapter of God's dealings with humanity.
Here is the eerie thing about the Hebrew. The verb most often used with berit is not "make" but "cut." In Hebrew you do not "make" a covenant; you karat berit, you "cut a covenant." Why "cut"? Because covenants in the ancient world were sealed with sacrifice. Animals were cut in two, and the parties walked between the bloody pieces, saying in effect: "May I become like these animals if I break this covenant." Genesis 15:9–17 shows God Himself, in the form of a smoking firepot and a flaming torch, passing between the cut pieces of Abram's sacrifice while Abram sleeps. God alone walks the path. God alone takes the curse of broken covenant on Himself.
Yeye ndiye dhabihu iliyokatwa. Damu yake ndiyo muhuri. Berit mpya imekatwa katika mwili wake mwenyewe msalabani. Strong's H1285.Take this word forward to the Lord's Supper. Jesus lifts the cup and says, "This is the new berit in My blood, which is shed for many." Greek diathêkê is the Septuagint's translation of Hebrew berit. Jesus is invoking the whole Old Testament covenant system in one sentence. He is the cut sacrifice. His blood is the seal. The new berit is cut in His own body on the cross. Strong's H1285.
Karat berit: kukata agano. Karat berit: to cut a covenant. Hebrew covenants are sealed with blood. Christ's covenant was sealed with His own.VI. Hitimisho: Maneno Kumi na Matatu na Nusu ya Biblia Katika Daftari LakoVI. A Closer: Thirteen Words and the Half-Bible in Your Notebook
Simama na uhisi ulicho nacho. Baada ya Sehemu ya 4 ulikuwa na maneno sita ya Kiebrania: Bereshit, Bara, Elohim, Ruach, Or, Adam. Sasa una mengine saba: Qadosh, Kavod, YHWH, Chesed, Shalom, Torah, Berit. Maneno kumi na matatu ya Kiebrania. Kutoka Mwanzo hadi Isaya hadi Zaburi hadi agano jipya. Wewe unayamiliki.Stop and feel what you have. After Unit 4 you had six Hebrew words: Bereshit, Bara, Elohim, Ruach, Or, Adam. Now you have seven more: Qadosh, Kavod, YHWH, Chesed, Shalom, Torah, Berit. Thirteen Hebrew words. Genesis to Isaiah to the Psalms to the new covenant. These thirteen words carry the architecture of the entire Old Testament theology. There are theology students with doctorates who do not own these thirteen words. You do.
Angalia kilichotokea katika usomaji wako. Wakati ujao utakaposoma Isaya 6, jicho lako litanasa "mtakatifu, mtakatifu, mtakatifu" na utasikia qadosh, qadosh, qadosh. Utasikia Qof ikinguruma. Wakati ujao utakaposoma "amani," utasikia shalom — kila kipande mahali pake panapostahili. Wakati ujao utakaposoma "sheria," utasikia torah — maelekezo ya Baba, si kanuni ya mahakamani. Wakati ujao utakaposoma "agano," utaona kukatwa, damu, tanuru litokalo moshi likipita katikati ya vipande.Notice what has happened to your reading. The next time you read Isaiah 6, your eye will catch on "holy, holy, holy" and you will hear qadosh, qadosh, qadosh. You will hear the Qof rumbling. You will know that no other attribute of God is repeated three times. The next time you read "the LORD" in small capitals, you will see the four letters YHWH behind the English. You will remember the burning bush. The next time you read "His lovingkindness endures forever," you will feel the weight of chesed — love that does not give up because it has bound itself by promise. The next time you read "peace," you will hear shalom — every piece in its right place. The next time you read "law," you will hear torah — a Father's instruction, not a courtroom rule. The next time you read "covenant," you will see the cut, the blood, the smoking firepot passing between the pieces.
Wewe unayamiliki.""There are theology students with doctorates who do not own these thirteen words. You do."Katika Sehemu ya 6 tunavuka daraja. Tunaondoka katika Kiebrania na kuhamia Kigiriki. Alfabeti inabadilika. Lugha hizi mbili zitakutana pale pale, machoni pako, katika Yohana 1:1.In Unit 6 we cross the bridge. We leave Hebrew and move to Greek. The alphabet changes. The direction of reading changes — Greek runs left to right like English. We will meet the first twelve Greek letters in Unit 6 and the last twelve in Unit 7, and at the end of Unit 7 you will read the first sentence of the Gospel of John in Greek: "En archê ên ho logos." "In the beginning was the Word." The verse John deliberately wrote to echo the Hebrew Bereshit you already know. The two languages will meet right there, in your eyes, on John 1:1.
Zoezi la Daftari (karatasi na kalamu)Notebook Activity (paper and pen)
Fungua daftari lako. Open your notebook. Turn to where you left off after Unit 4 — the six-word Genesis 1 table. Below it, write the heading "Unit 5 — Holiness and Covenant: Seven More." Add a second table with the same five columns from last unit (Hebrew word, Transliteration, Strong's Number, Meaning in one sentence, Key verse). Fill in all seven words: Qadosh (Isaiah 6:3), Kavod (Isaiah 6:3), YHWH (Exodus 3:14, Isaiah 6:5), Chesed (Psalm 136:1), Shalom (Numbers 6:26), Torah (Psalm 119:97), Berit (Genesis 15:18). Below the second table, write this sentence in your own hand: "YHWH is qadosh, qadosh, qadosh. His kavod fills the eretz. His chesed endures forever. His shalom is the wholeness He gives. His torah is the instruction of a Father. His berit is cut in blood — and the new berit was cut in the blood of His own Son." Read it out loud. With thirteen Hebrew words mixed into the sentence, you have just spoken a complete summary of Old Testament theology.
