Mfalme AnajitokezaThe King Steps Forward

In the first unit Matthew answered the question of identity: who is this child? He is the Son of David and the Son of Abraham; He is Jesus, who saves His people from their sins; and He is Immanuel, God with us. Now, in chapters 3 and 4, the King who was hidden in Nazareth steps forward to be presented to His people. Nearly thirty silent years have passed since the wise men knelt at the cradle. Then, all at once, the silence breaks. A prophet's voice cries in the wilderness; the heavens open over a river; a tempter is met and mastered in a desert; and the first men are called to follow. Matthew is showing us the King attested and proven before His public work begins — attested by the forerunner, by the Father's own voice, and by the descending Spirit, and proven against the enemy who had ruined the first man. By the end of these two chapters the King has been presented, and He has begun to gather a kingdom.

Sauti NyikaniThe Voice in the Wilderness

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!'" (Matthew 3:1-2). Matthew sees in John the very herald the prophets foretold: "For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the LORD, make His paths straight'" (Matthew 3:3, quoting Isaiah 40:3). A king of the ancient world did not arrive unannounced; a herald went before him to make the road ready. John is that herald. He comes in rough camel's hair with a leather belt, eating locusts and wild honey — a man stripped of every comfort so that nothing about him competes with his message. Crowds stream out from Jerusalem and all Judea, confessing their sins and being baptized in the Jordan. The herald's whole glory is that men look past him to the One who comes after. He is, as he says of himself, only a voice; the Word is Another.

Toba Yenye MiziziRepentance with Roots

Mungu hana wajukuu. Kila nafsi lazima igeuke yenyewe. But when John sees many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he does not flatter them. He calls them a "brood of vipers" and presses the one demand they least expect: "Bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not think to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'" (Matthew 3:8-9). Here is the heart of John's preaching, and it searches us still. The people of his day rested in their pedigree — they were children of Abraham, and surely that was enough. John tells them it is not. A bloodline cannot repent; only a person can. Repentance in the Bible is more than regret and more than a good resolution; it is a turning — a turning away from sin and a turning back to God — and a true turning bears fruit. "Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees," John warns; "every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire" (Matthew 3:10). We must not presume that a Christian upbringing, a church membership, or a long family history has settled the matter of our hearts. God has no grandchildren. Each soul must turn for itself.

Mwenye Nguvu Kuliko MimiOne Mightier Than I

John knows the limit of his own work. "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire" (Matthew 3:11). John's baptism is a baptism of preparation — water that confesses the need of cleansing. The One who comes will do what water cannot: He will baptize with the Holy Spirit, pouring out God's own life upon His people. John adds a solemn word of judgment too: the Coming One holds a winnowing fan, and He will gather the wheat into the barn but burn the chaff with unquenchable fire (Matthew 3:12). The same King who saves will also judge; the gospel is good news precisely because the judgment it answers is real.

Kuitimiza Haki YoteTo Fulfill All Righteousness

Kisha Yule ambaye Yohana alimtangaza anafika mtoni. Then the One whom John announced arrives at the river. "Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him" (Matthew 3:13). John recoils, for this is backward — "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?" (Matthew 3:14). Why would the sinless Son submit to a baptism of repentance, when He had no sin to confess? Jesus answers, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness" (Matthew 3:15). He is not confessing sin of His own; He is taking His place with sinners. From the very threshold of His ministry, the King steps down into the river beside the guilty, identifying Himself with the people He came to save. It is the first step of a road that will end at a cross.

And as He comes up from the water, heaven answers. "The heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased'" (Matthew 3:16-17). Here, at the Jordan, the one God is shown as Father, Son, and Spirit in a single moment: the Son stands in the water, the Spirit descends as a dove, the Father speaks from heaven. This is not three Gods but one God in three Persons — a truth no human mind invented and none can fully fathom, yet a truth the Scripture plainly sets before our eyes. The King is anointed for His work and openly declared to be the beloved Son.

Israeli wa Kweli NyikaniThe True Israel in the Wilderness

Yeye ndiye Adamu mpya, asiyekubali pale ambapo mtu wa kwanza alikubali, na Israeli wa kweli, mwaminifu pale ambapo taifa halikuwa mwaminifu."Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry" (Matthew 4:1-2). The same Spirit that descended as a dove now leads Him into the desert to be tested. Notice the number: forty days. Israel of old wandered forty years in the wilderness and failed again and again — grumbling for bread, testing God, turning aside to idols. Now the true Son of God enters the same wilderness, and where the nation fell, He stands. This is the pattern we named in Unit 1 and will meet again and again in Matthew: what God did with His people Israel is taken up and brought to its true completion in Jesus. Scholars call it recapitulation — Jesus relives Israel's story and gets it right. He is the new Adam, who does not yield where the first man yielded, and the true Israel, faithful where the nation was faithless.

The three temptations probe Him at every point. First the tempter says, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread" — turn Your power to Your own appetite. Jesus answers from Deuteronomy: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). Then Satan sets Him on the pinnacle of the temple: throw Yourself down, for it is written that angels will bear You up — force God's hand with a spectacle. Jesus answers, "You shall not tempt the LORD your God" (Matthew 4:7). Finally the devil shows Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory: "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me" — the crown without the cross. Jesus answers, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve'" (Matthew 4:10). Three times the King meets the lie with "It is written," wielding the very Scripture His people had been given. The tempter leaves Him, and angels come and minister to Him. The King has been proven; He will not buy the kingdom on the enemy's terms.

Nuru ImewazukiaLight Has Dawned

When Jesus hears that John has been put in prison, He withdraws to Galilee and makes His home in Capernaum, by the sea (Matthew 4:12-13). Matthew, faithful to his great theme, sees a prophecy fulfilled: this is the region Isaiah called "Galilee of the Gentiles," where "the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned" (Matthew 4:16, quoting Isaiah 9:1-2). The light dawns in the very place the world counted least. And then Jesus begins to preach — and His first word is John's word: "From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand'" (Matthew 4:17). The herald's torch passes to the King. The cry that opened the chapter on John's lips now opens the ministry on the lips of the King Himself, for John was only ever the voice preparing the way for this word.

Njooni Nyuma YanguFollow Me

"Mara wakaziacha nyavu zao, wakamfuata" (Mathayo 4:20). Mbele kidogo anawaita Yakobo na Yohana, wakizitengeneza nyavu zao chomboni pamoja na Zebedayo baba yao, na "mara wakakiacha chombo na baba yao, wakamfuata" (Mathayo 4:22). Angalia neno ambalo Mathayo analirudia mara mbili: mara. The King's first public act is not to build a throne but to call men. Walking by the Sea of Galilee, He sees two fishermen, Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net, and He says, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19). "They immediately left their nets and followed Him" (Matthew 4:20). A little farther He calls James and John, mending nets in the boat with their father Zebedee, and "immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him" (Matthew 4:22). Mark the word Matthew twice repeats: immediately. As Joseph in the opening chapters obeyed God's word without a question, so these men leave nets, boat, and father at the King's call. This is how the kingdom is gathered — not by force, but by a word that summons and a heart that answers. The King who was presented at the Jordan now begins to draw a people to Himself, one call at a time.

Mfalme AmetambulishwaThe King Presented

By the close of Matthew 4 the King has been fully presented. He was announced by a prophet sent ahead to prepare His way. He was attested at His baptism by the Father's voice and the Spirit's descent. He was proven in the wilderness against the tempter who had ruined the first man. He has taken up His message — repent, for the kingdom is here — and begun to gather the first of His followers. Everything still rests, as Unit 1 said, on who He is; but now the world has been shown who He is. And the same word that fell on Peter and Andrew by the lake falls on every reader still: "Follow Me." The King has been presented to you. The only question is whether, like those first fishermen, you will leave the net and go.

"Njooni nyuma yangu, nami nitawafanya wavuvi wa watu." — Mathayo 4:19 (SUV)"Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." — Matthew 4:19 (NKJV)
