Andiko: Mathayo 10:32Text: Matthew 10:32
Mfalme Anawatuma Wajumbe WakeThe King Sends His Messengers
Hadi sasa Mfalme amekuwa akiwakusanya wanafunzi kwake; sasa anawatuma waende. Up to this point the King has been gathering disciples to Himself; now He sends them out. "And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness" (Matthew 10:1). The King who came preaching the kingdom now multiplies His voice, entrusting His own authority to twelve ordinary men. Their first commission is narrow: "Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (Matthew 10:6), and their message is the same word John and Jesus both preached — "The kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matthew 10:7). They are to give as freely as they have received, carrying no gold and no extra provision, depending wholly on the One who sent them. From the start the mission is not a human enterprise to be managed but a trust to be carried in dependence on God.
Kondoo Kati ya Mbwa-mwituSheep Among Wolves
But Jesus does not send them out with false comfort. "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves" (Matthew 10:16). He tells them plainly that they will be handed over to councils, dragged before governors, and hated for His name's sake — "but he who endures to the end will be saved" (Matthew 10:22). This is the first clear note of the opposition that will rise through these chapters and finally crest at the cross. And yet, three times in this passage, the King says, "Do not fear." Do not fear those who can kill the body but cannot touch the soul. Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin, and not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will? "But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows" (Matthew 10:30-31). The messengers go into danger, but they go watched over by a Father to whom no sparrow and no servant is small.
Alama za MwanafunziThe Marks of a Disciple
Then Jesus turns from the mission to the disciple himself, and lays down what it costs to belong to Him. The first mark is confession: "Whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father" (Matthew 10:32-33). A true disciple sees the King clearly enough to own Him out loud, in a world that would rather he kept silent. The second mark is love that outranks every rival: "He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me" (Matthew 10:37). Jesus is not setting family aside as worthless; He is claiming the first place that belongs to God alone. So He warns that following Him may bring a sword rather than easy peace — division even within a household (Matthew 10:34-36) — because a loyalty this total will always cut across lesser loyalties. The third mark is the cross: "He who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it" (Matthew 10:38-39). To follow the King nearly is to die to self and find true life in Him. See Him clearly, love Him dearly, follow Him nearly — that is the shape of a disciple's life.
Alama Inayoonyesha Sisi ni Mali ya NaniA Mark That Shows Whose We Are
In an earlier sermon on this passage I used an old family branding iron stamped with the name Cook. My father had used it on cattle, and the mark told everyone who they belonged to. Jesus says that a disciple also bears recognizable marks. The sermon gathered them under three headings: commitment, confession, and cost. Commitment is more than interest in God; it becomes active service. Confession is more than a private opinion; Christ is owned with the lips and displayed by the influence of a changed life. And discipleship has a cost: family loyalties, worldly interests, and even life itself can never outrank the Lord. The old stagecoach illustration makes the point memorably. First-class passengers kept their seats on the steep hill, second-class passengers got out and walked, but third-class passengers got out and pushed. The church needs disciples who will push — not from guilt, but from love. Jesus' words in Matthew 10 therefore ask not merely whether we admire Him, but whether His ownership is visible on us.
Wewe Ndiwe Yule Ajaye? Are You the Coming One?
Naye heri awaye yote asiyechukizwa nami" (Mathayo 11:5-6). Now the scene shifts to a prison cell. John the Baptist, the bold herald of Unit 2, sits in Herod's prison, and doubt steals in. He sends his own disciples to ask Jesus, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?" (Matthew 11:3). It is a tender and honest question, and Jesus does not rebuke it. He answers by pointing to His works: "The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me" (Matthew 11:5-6). The signs Isaiah promised of the kingdom are happening in plain sight. Then Jesus honors John before the crowd, calling him the greatest born of women — and yet adds a startling word: "He who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he" (Matthew 11:11). So great is the kingdom now breaking in that the least within it stands on ground the prophets only longed to see.
Njoni KwanguCome to Me
The opposition deepens. Jesus pronounces woes on the cities that saw His mighty works and would not repent — Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum, His own adopted town — warning that it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon, even for Sodom, in the day of judgment than for them (Matthew 11:20-24). The greater the light refused, the heavier the account. And yet from the same lips, in the same hour, comes the gentlest invitation in all the Gospels: "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light" (Matthew 11:28-30). The King who warns the hard-hearted opens His arms to the weary. His rule is not another load piled on tired backs; it is rest for the soul.
Bwana wa SabatoLord of the Sabbath
Hata hapa Mathayo anamwona Mtumishi mpole wa Isaya, ambaye mwanzi uliopondeka hatauvunja, wala utambi utokao moshi hatauzima (Mathayo 12:20).In chapter 12 the rising opposition takes sharper form, and the battleground is the Sabbath. When His disciples pluck heads of grain on the Sabbath because they are hungry, the Pharisees object, and Jesus answers them out of Scripture — David ate the showbread, the priests work in the temple — and declares, "I desire mercy and not sacrifice," and then, "the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath" (Matthew 12:7-8). Soon after, in the synagogue, He heals a man with a withered hand, asking which of them would not lift a sheep out of a pit on the Sabbath: "Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath" (Matthew 12:12). The Pharisees had buried the Sabbath under their own rules and lost its purpose; the King restores it as a gift for man's good. But their response shows where opposition is heading: "Then the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him" (Matthew 12:14). Matthew sees even here the gentle Servant of Isaiah, who will not break a bruised reed nor quench a smoking flax (Matthew 12:20).
Dhambi IsiyosamehekaThe Unpardonable Sin
The conflict reaches its most solemn point when Jesus casts a demon out of a blind and mute man, and the Pharisees, unable to deny the miracle, attribute it to the devil: "This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub" (Matthew 12:24). Jesus shows the folly of it — a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand, and if He casts out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon them (Matthew 12:28). Here He draws the line that runs through the whole unit: "He who is not with Me is against Me" (Matthew 12:30). Then comes the gravest warning in Matthew: "Every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men... either in this age or in the age to come" (Matthew 12:31-32). What is this unpardonable sin? It is not a single slip of the tongue. The Pharisees were looking straight at the Spirit's own work and calling it the devil's — knowing better, and hardening themselves against the only One who could lead them to repentance. Blasphemy against the Spirit is the settled, willful, final rejection of the Spirit's witness to Christ; it is the sin of unbelief carried to the point of no return. It cannot be forgiven, not because God's grace runs short, but because the man who persists in calling good evil has shut against himself the only door through which forgiveness comes. Let this comfort the troubled soul who fears having committed it: that very fear is the Spirit still at work, a tender conscience He has not abandoned. The man who has truly turned final against the Spirit no longer cares at all.
Ishara ya YonaThe Sign of Jonah
When the scribes and Pharisees demand a sign, Jesus refuses to perform on command. "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" (Matthew 12:39-40). Here the King points past every lesser wonder to the one sign that will settle everything — His own death and resurrection. As Jonah came up from the deep as if from the grave, so the Son of Man will rise. This is the same pattern of fulfillment we have traced from the beginning: an old story of the prophet Jonah becomes a true sign of the greater work of Christ. Jesus warns that the men of Nineveh, who repented at Jonah's preaching, will rise in judgment against this generation, "for indeed a greater than Jonah is here" (Matthew 12:41).
The unit closes with a quiet but searching scene. While Jesus is teaching, word comes that His mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak with Him. He answers with a question that redraws the lines of belonging: "Who is My mother and who are My brothers?" And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He says, "Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother" (Matthew 12:48-50). The kingdom the messengers were sent to announce gathers a new family, bound not by blood but by obedience to the Father. The opposition has been rising — Pharisees plotting, cities refusing, the charge of Beelzebub — but around the King a people is forming who hear the will of God and do it.
Utume na UpinzaniMission and Opposition
These three chapters move on two tracks at once. On one track the King's mission goes out — the Twelve are sent, the message spreads, the weary are invited, a new family is gathered. On the other track opposition rises — messengers are warned of wolves, cities refuse to repent, Pharisees plot His death and slander the Spirit's work. The two tracks are not really separate; the same light that draws some hardens others. And running down the middle is the line Jesus Himself drew: "He who is not with Me is against Me." There is no neutral ground before this King. The same word that sent the Twelve and welcomed the weary still asks each of us where we stand — with Him, confessing and following, or against Him. To do the will of the Father is to belong to His family forever.
