Tunachohifadhi.
Summarize the threefold task of a biblical assessment: to affirm, to decline, and to leave open, without collapsing into a single verdict.
- Kukumbuka njia iliyotumika katika kozi nzima: kuyatenganisha maswali mawili, kuyapima maswali yaliyo wazi bila upendeleo, kupima kila kitu kwa Maandiko, na kumweka Kristo katikati.Recall the method used throughout the course: keeping two questions apart, weighing open questions even-handedly, measuring all by Scripture, and keeping Christ central.
- Kueleza mambo makuu ambayo kozi inayathibitisha na mambo makuu ambayo inayakataa.State the main things the course affirms and the main things it declines.
Identify the questions the course deliberately leaves open, and explain why leaving them open is faithful.
Apply the central test — whether a work glorifies Christ — to any gift, teacher, or claim.
Kuziunganisha Nyuzi PamojaDrawing the Threads Together
We come now to the last unit, and to the task the whole course has been preparing. Over these lessons we have studied the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures, the birth of the Spirit-empowered church at Pentecost, the gift of tongues in the book of Acts and in Paul's letters, the meaning of the baptism in the Spirit, the rise and renewal of the modern movement, the exercise of the gifts today, and the distortions that have grown up alongside. Now we must gather all of it into a single biblical assessment of the movement as a whole. That assessment is threefold, and its first discipline is to resist being collapsed into one word. We are to affirm what is true and good, to decline what fails the test of Scripture, and to separate the questions Scripture leaves open from those it settles. The constant temptation is to reach for a verdict — to declare the movement simply right, or simply wrong — and we will not yield to it, because the movement is not a single thing and its questions are not all of one kind.
This is not an evasion but the shape the subject itself requires. A living movement of hundreds of millions contains, like the visible church in every age, both the wheat and the tares; and the questions it raises range from the plainly settled to the honestly disputed. An assessment that flattened all of this into a single yes or no would be neither honest nor useful. So we will take the movement as it actually is — mixed, large, and still growing — and weigh its parts with the care each deserves, letting Scripture, not our preference, set the terms.
Njia TuliyoitumiaThe Method We Have Used
Before we state the assessment, it is worth naming the discipline that has shaped every unit, for the method is itself part of the conclusion. First, we have kept two questions apart wherever they arose: whether a gift is real is one question, and whether a particular experience is required of every believer is another; much confusion dissolves the moment these are separated. Second, we have handled the genuinely open questions the way the seminary handles the millennium — setting out each faithful position at its strongest and imposing no verdict of our own. Third, we have measured everything by Scripture, and we have judged a movement not by its worst and most visible preachers but by its Scriptures and its faithful. Fourth, through all of it we have kept Christ at the center, remembering that the Spirit was given to glorify Him. This is not the indecision of a mind that cannot make itself up; it is the fairness that truth demands when godly people who love the same Bible read it differently.
It is worth adding why such fairness is not weakness. On the great essentials of the faith — the deity of Christ, His atoning death and resurrection, salvation by grace through faith, the authority of Scripture — the Bible speaks with a clarity that leaves no room for a shrug, and on these the course has never wavered. It is precisely because those foundations are firm that we can afford to be patient on the secondary questions, where sincere believers differ. To confuse the two — treating a disputed matter as though it were a creed, or a creed as though it were disputable — is one of the surest ways to divide the church and misrepresent the Scriptures at once.
Kile TunachothibitishaWhat We Affirm
Begin with the affirmations, for they are many and they come first. We affirm that the Holy Spirit is fully God, personally and powerfully at work in the church today — convicting the world of sin, granting the new birth, indwelling every believer from the moment of faith, and conforming the saints to the image of Christ. We affirm that God still saves, still sanctifies, and still hears and answers the prayers of His people.
“Lakini kila mmoja hupewa ufunuo wa Roho kwa kufaidiana.”1 Wakorintho 12:7 (SUV)"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all."1 Corinthians 12:7 (NKJV)
We affirm that the gifts of the Spirit described in the New Testament are real, distributed by the Spirit as He wills for the building up of the whole body, and that the ordered desire for them is something Scripture commands rather than forbids. We affirm that God still heals, though never on demand and never as a wage owed to sufficient faith. And we affirm the fruit the movement has borne across a little more than a century: a place at the very forefront of world evangelism, the gospel carried to the poor, the remote, and the unreached, and hundreds of millions of people — by careful estimate approaching six hundred and forty-four million — brought to name the Lord Jesus Christ. Wherever the Spirit is exalting Christ, converting sinners, and building holiness, we give thanks without reservation and without suspicion.
We affirm, too, the healthy experiential dimension the movement has often recovered for the wider church: the assurance of God's love poured into the heart, the inward witness of the Spirit that we are children of God (Rom 8:16), the joy and boldness that mark lives genuinely touched by grace, and a hunger for God's presence that no dead formality can satisfy. Christianity is not mere assent to true propositions; it is life in the Spirit, and a movement that has pressed this upon a sometimes cold and comfortable church has done it a service worth acknowledging.
Kile TunachokataaWhat We Decline
With the same honesty, we decline whatever does not survive the testing of the Word. We decline the teaching that speaking in tongues is the required and universal evidence of the baptism in the Spirit, for Scripture lays down no such rule and describes the Spirit's coming in more ways than one. We decline the prosperity gospel, which turns a generous Father into a machine that dispenses health and wealth to the right technique, and which cruelly reads a believer's suffering as the verdict of his unbelief.
“Jaribuni mambo yote; lishikeni lililo jema.”1 Wathesalonike 5:21 (SUV)"Test all things; hold fast what is good."1 Thessalonians 5:21 (NKJV)
We decline the excesses examined in the previous unit — the manipulation of emotion and of the offering, leaders gathered beyond all accountability, prophecies that fail and are never honestly owned, and the mistaking of noise and excitement for the moving of God. And we decline, in whatever quarter it appears, any spirit that lifts experience above Scripture, or a gift above the Giver, or a man above the Lord. To decline these things is not contempt for the movement; it is love for it — love that cares enough to hold it to the standard of its own Book, as the movement's own faithful people do.
Yet let it be clearly said what we do not decline. We do not decline the supernatural itself, nor the possibility that God still gives every gift named in the New Testament; that larger question we have deliberately left open. What we decline are the specific distortions — the false rule, the false promise, the unaccountable practice — not the Spirit's freedom to work as He wills. It would be a poor cure for one error to fall into its opposite, quenching the Spirit in the very act of guarding the Word. We reject the counterfeit precisely in order to honor the genuine.
Kile Tunachoacha WaziWhat We Leave Open
Now the assessment does something a mere verdict never could: it lets the open questions remain open, and it does so on purpose. Some matters Scripture does not close, and honesty forbids us to close them in its name. Whether the revelatory gifts continue in the church or ceased with the apostolic age; whether "that which is perfect" in First Corinthians thirteen is the completed canon or the return of Christ; whether the baptism in the Spirit is best understood as conversion itself or as a distinct and later empowering; whether the tongues of Acts ten and nineteen were known human languages or a prayer language the text does not define — on each of these, careful and faithful Christians have stood on different ground for generations, and each can open the Bible to make his case. We have set out the strongest form of each position and left it with the reader to weigh before God. To manufacture certainty where the Scriptures are quiet would not be faithfulness; it would be trading the discipline of fair reading for the false comfort of a settled score.
Someone may object that leaving such questions open is a failure of nerve. But consider the alternative. To bind every conscience to one answer where Scripture has not bound it is to add to the Word, the very fault we warned against when we spoke of the closed canon. The apostle Paul himself taught the churches to bear with one another on disputable matters, each fully persuaded in his own mind, without despising or judging a brother who saw things differently (Rom 14). The open questions of this movement belong to that category. We hold our own convictions, and we hold them honestly; but we do not press them as terms of fellowship, and we grant to others the same liberty of conscience we claim for ourselves.
Jinsi ya Kuyashika YoteHow to Hold It All
How, then, is a pastor or an ordinary believer to carry an assessment so deliberately mixed? The answer is the one the last unit gave: hold truth and charity together, and refuse to let go of either. Be clear and firm where Scripture is clear, and genuinely humble where it is not. Test all things and hold fast what is good; do not despise prophecies, and do not swallow every claim made in the Spirit's name.
Receive as brothers and sisters those who have weighed the same texts and come to rest on different ground, and save your sharp words for real errors rather than for honest differences among the faithful. Guard the flock diligently from every distortion, yet never by slandering the great many who are faithful. This posture is harder to keep than any slogan, and it will satisfy neither the party that wants everything embraced nor the party that wants everything condemned; but it is the only stance worthy of the truth and of the people it is meant to serve.
Kristo KatikatiChrist at the Center
Roho wa kweli, aliwaambia wanafunzi wake, haji kujitangaza mwenyewe wala kuvuta macho kwa karama zake mwenyewe, bali kumtukuza Mwana:Every strand of this assessment runs back at last to a single test, and it is the test the Lord Himself supplied. The Spirit of truth, He told His disciples, does not come to advertise Himself or to draw attention to His own gifts, but to glorify the Son:
He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you."John 16:14 (NKJV)
So the surest measure of any work that claims to be the Spirit's is not its volume, its crowds, or its wonders, but whether it lifts up Jesus Christ — His cross, His gospel, and His lordship — and whether it makes His people more like Him. A movement is as healthy as it is Christ-centered, and no healthier; the same is true of a congregation, a ministry, and a single teacher. Where Christ is exalted and His people are sanctified, the Spirit is surely at work; where He is eclipsed by a gift, a technique, or a personality, something has gone wrong however impressive the display. Judge every gift, every teacher, and every claim by that one steady light.
Thibitisha kilicho kweli, kataa kilicho uongo, yaache maswali yaliyo wazi yabaki wazi, na ushike kila sehemu yake mbele za Kristo:We have studied this movement not as outsiders looking down upon it, but as members of one body examining a large and living part of itself. Much within it is the genuine work of God, some within it is the corruption of that work by human hands, and some of its questions remain honestly open for faithful minds to weigh. Affirm the true, decline the false, keep the open questions open, and hold every part of it up to Christ:
“…na kujitahidi kuuhifadhi umoja wa Roho katika kifungo cha amani.”Waefeso 4:3 (SUV)"…endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."Ephesians 4:3 (NKJV)
That is the whole of a biblical assessment, and it is enough. With this the course is complete. May the Lord grant you a discerning mind that tests all things by His Word, a charitable heart that loves the brethren across every honest difference, and above all a deepening love for the Christ whom the Spirit came to glorify. To God, who pours out His Spirit and exalts His Son, be all the glory.
