Tunachohifadhi.
1. Kutoka Masomoni Hadi Hudumani1. From Study to Ministry
For ten units we have studied the Psalms one at a time — the two ways of Psalm 1, the Shepherd of Psalm 23, the King of glory in Psalm 24, the penitence of Psalm 51, the Word in Psalm 119, the cross in Psalm 22, the fearless trust of Psalm 56, the silence of God in Psalm 28, the blessings of Psalm 103, and the cast burden of Psalm 55. In these final two units we turn a corner. The question is no longer only "What does this psalm mean?" but "How do I now carry these psalms into the work of ministry?" The Psalms were never meant to stay on the study desk. They were Israel's hymnbook and prayer book, sung in the temple and whispered in exile, and they remain the most usable book in all of Scripture for the practical work of caring for souls.
There is a reason ministers have always reached for the Psalms first. Every other part of the Bible speaks to us — the Law commands, the Gospels narrate, the Epistles instruct. But the Psalms speak for us. They put words in the mouth of the grieving, the guilty, the frightened, the thankful, and the lost. When a person in your care cannot find words for what they feel, the Psalms have already written them. This unit considers four arenas where that gift becomes ministry: preaching, pastoral care, public worship, and the leading of others in prayer.
2. Kuhubiri Zaburi2. Preaching the Psalms
The Psalms preach differently from other texts, and the wise preacher honors the difference. A psalm is not an argument to be outlined like one of Paul's letters; it is a piece of inspired poetry meant to move the heart as it teaches the mind. To preach a psalm well, begin by finding its single dominant emotion or claim — trust, repentance, awe, lament, praise — and let that become the center of gravity for the whole message. Psalm 23 is not six unrelated points about sheep; it is one great assurance: the LORD is my shepherd, and therefore I shall not want. Psalm 51 is not a lecture on sin; it is the cry of a broken man finding his way home.
Notice, too, how often the Psalms preach Christ. We saw it most plainly in Psalm 22, where the cross is described a thousand years before it happened, but it runs everywhere: the blessed Man of Psalm 1 is fulfilled in Jesus, the King of glory of Psalm 24 enters as our Redeemer, and the Shepherd of Psalm 23 lays down His life in John 10. The preacher who handles a psalm faithfully will, like Philip with the Ethiopian, begin at the psalm and preach Jesus. And because the Psalms are so honest about human emotion, they give the preacher permission to address what people actually feel on Monday morning — fear, guilt, grief, doubt — rather than only what they are supposed to feel.
3. Zaburi katika Uchungaji wa Watu3. The Psalms in Pastoral Care
If the Psalms are powerful in the pulpit, they are indispensable at the bedside. There is a reason a pastor reads Psalm 23 at gravesides "countless times over the years," as one of our lessons put it. In a moment when fresh words fail and well-meant explanations only irritate, the ancient cadences of "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me" reach a grieving heart in a way no original sermon can. The Psalms are tested words. They have comforted the dying for three thousand years, and they carry an authority and a familiarity that homemade comfort cannot match.
But using the Psalms in pastoral care is an art, not a formula. We learned from Joe Bayly's two visitors that the grieving usually need presence more than paragraphs; the Psalms are meant to be offered gently, in small doses, often simply read aloud and left to do their own work. Match the psalm to the wound. For the guilt-stricken, Psalm 51 and Psalm 103 speak of a God who forgives all our iniquities. For the frightened, Psalm 56 and Psalm 46 speak of a refuge. For the one crushed by loss, Psalm 55 invites the casting of the burden, and Psalm 42 gives honest words to a soul that thirsts and is downcast. Part of pastoral wisdom is knowing which psalm to open, and when simply to sit and let it be read.
4. Zaburi katika Ibada ya Hadhara4. The Psalms in Public Worship
The Psalms were Israel's songbook, and they remain a deep well for the worship of the church. They were written to be sung, and across the centuries the church has sung them, chanted them, paraphrased them into hymns, and prayed them responsively. To build worship around a psalm is to let Scripture itself set the agenda of praise — its words become our words, its God-centered honesty corrects our self-centered moods, and its sweep from lament to praise teaches a congregation the full range of the life of faith.
A psalm can shape an entire service: a call to worship drawn from its opening, a confession from its middle, an assurance from its turn toward hope, and a benediction from its close. The worship planner who learns to read a psalm this way will never run short of material, for the Psalter holds a song for every season of the soul — morning and evening, festival and funeral, triumph and tears.
5. Zaburi katika Ibada ya Binafsi5. The Psalms in Personal Devotion
Before the Psalms can be ministered to others, they must be lived by the minister. The danger of seminary study is that the Psalms become only texts to be analyzed, not prayers to be prayed. But these songs were given first for the closet, not the classroom.
Psalm 1 commends the man who meditates on God's law day and night, like a cow chewing the cud — turning the Word over and over until it nourishes the soul. Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, is one long love song to the Word hidden in the heart.
The Psalms teach us that the heart of devotion is honesty before God. As one of our lessons put it, this book teaches us to be honest with God: if you are angry, say so; if you are afraid, bring it; if you are glad, express it. Every emotion a human being can feel is somewhere in the Psalms, brought openly into the presence of God. The minister who prays the Psalms daily will find his own heart kept tender, his fears stilled, his sins confessed, and his praise enlarged — and only out of that fullness can he truly feed others.
6. Kusoma Zaburi Ipasavyo6. Reading the Psalms Rightly
Because the Psalms are poetry, they must be read as poetry, and a few simple skills protect us from misusing them. First, watch for Hebrew parallelism — the way the second line of a verse echoes, intensifies, or contrasts the first. "The earth is the LORD's, and all its fullness" is answered by "the world and those who dwell therein"; the two lines say one thing twice for emphasis. Reading the lines together, rather than mining each for a separate point, keeps us close to the writer's meaning.
Second, respect the kind of psalm before you. A lament like Psalm 22 or Psalm 42 moves through honest complaint toward renewed trust, and we must not rush it to the happy ending. A psalm of thanksgiving like Psalm 103 counts concrete benefits. A royal or messianic psalm like Psalm 24 points beyond its first occasion to Christ. Third, read every psalm in light of the whole of Scripture and ultimately in light of Jesus, in whom the deepest promises and the darkest cries alike find their answer. These are not academic niceties; they are the difference between feeding people the true sense of the text and feeding them our own invention.
7. Neno la Tahadhari na Uangalifu7. A Word of Caution and Care
The very power of the Psalms calls for care in handling them. Their honesty can be misread: the angry and vengeful lines of some psalms are the raw prayers of sufferers handing their rage to God, not models for our own grudges, and they must be taught as such. Their comfort can be cheapened: to toss "all things work together for good" at a person in fresh grief, without presence and patience, can wound rather than heal. And their promises must be read truly — Psalm 23 does not promise a life without valleys, only a Shepherd within them; Psalm 103 does not promise that every disease is healed in this life, for some of God's choicest servants, like Paul, were left with their thorn.
The minister of the Psalms, then, must be both bold and humble: bold to bring these tested words into every situation, and humble enough to let them say what they actually say. Handled rightly, the Psalms will never run dry. They will preach, comfort, lead worship, and feed the soul long after our own clever words are forgotten.
8. Kuzibeba Nyimbo Mbele8. Carrying the Songs Forward
We began this course by calling the Psalms the folk songs of the Bible — the people's songs, sung in every key of human experience and always in the presence of God. The aim of all our study has been not merely to understand these songs but to be able to sing them with others and for others: to put their words in the mouths of the grieving, to lift them over a congregation, to whisper them at a deathbed, and to pray them in the secret place. That is the Psalms in ministry.
In our final unit we will draw the whole course together and consider what it means to carry these songs through a lifetime of service — how the Psalms accompany the believer from the morning of faith to its evening, and how the minister who has lived in them becomes, like the tree of Psalm 1, planted by the rivers of water, bringing forth fruit in season for the good of God's people. For now, take up the Psalms not only as a book you have studied, but as a ministry you have been given.
