Tunachohifadhi.

1. Hazina Yako Ilipo1. Where Your Treasure Is

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Jesus puts His finger on something we would rather He left alone: our money, and what it reveals about our hearts. He does not say your heart will produce your treasure; He says the reverse — where your treasure is, there your heart will be. What we do with our money actually shapes and steers the heart. Generosity, then, is not merely a financial matter; it is a spiritual one. How we hold our possessions is one of the truest indicators of who, or what, we really love.

That is why this command cuts so deep. To be generous is not first about funding good causes; it is about being set free from the grip money has on us, so that our hearts can be where our true treasure is — with God. Earthly treasure rots, rusts, and gets stolen; only what we send ahead to heaven is secure. The generous life is, at bottom, the wise life: investing where the returns are eternal.

2. Ngumi Iliyokunjwa ya Tumbili2. The Monkey's Clenched Fist

Kuna mtego rahisi ambao wawindaji barani Afrika waliwahi kuutumia kuwanasa tumbili. There is a simple trap hunters in Africa once used to catch monkeys. They would put peanuts inside a jar with a narrow neck. A monkey could slide its open hand in, but once it grabbed a fistful of peanuts, it could not pull its closed fist back out. Freedom was always within reach — all it had to do was let go. But it would not let go, and so, clinging to a handful of peanuts, it was captured. The trap worked not because the jar was strong, but because the monkey would not open its hand.

That is a parable of the human heart and its possessions. Jesus said, "new wine must be put into new wineskins." The old wineskin of greed, hoarding, and self-preservation simply cannot hold the radical new wine of Christ; it is too brittle and too tight. The old wine is the clenched fist — clinging, anxious, self-protecting. The new wine is the open hand — generosity and trust in God. We are caught not by the wealth itself but by our refusal to open our hand, and the gospel calls us to let go.

3. Mungu Aliyekuwa Maskini3. The God Who Became Poor

The deepest motive for generosity is not a principle but a Person. Jesus, the Creator and rightful owner of the whole universe, by whom and for whom all things were made, chose to live with nothing. He had no house of His own, no transportation but a borrowed colt, no fine clothes but a simple tunic, no wealth beyond what the day required. He who owned everything held it all with an open hand. As Paul says, "though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9).

This is not a prosperity gospel that promises us earthly riches; the riches Christ gives are spiritual and eternal. But it is the pattern that makes Christian generosity possible. We give because He gave; we open our hands because He opened His, all the way to the cross. Generosity is simply the overflow of having received, freely, the immeasurable wealth of grace from a Savior who made Himself poor to enrich us forever.

4. Divai Mpya ya Kutoa kwa Kujitolea Dhabihu4. The New Wine of Sacrificial Giving

Luka 21:1-4 (SUV): "Akamwona mjane mmoja maskini akitia humo senti mbili. He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, 'Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.'"

Jesus watched the rich drop large gifts into the temple treasury, and then He watched a poor widow drop in two tiny copper coins — and He said she had given more than all of them. How? Because they gave out of their abundance, what they would never miss, while she gave out of her poverty, all she had to live on. Heaven does not measure a gift by its size but by its cost to the giver, and by the trust behind it.

This is the first move of the new wine: sacrificial giving. The widow's gift was tiny by earthly measure and priceless by heaven's, because it cost her everything and flung her entirely upon God. Generosity that costs us nothing barely registers in heaven; generosity that costs us something stretches the wineskin of our hearts to hold more of God's provision. The question is never how much we give, but how much it costs us, and how much trust it expresses.

5. Divai Mpya ya Mali Iliyokabidhiwa5. The New Wine of Surrendered Wealth

Then Jesus... said to him, 'One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.' But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions."

If the widow shows generosity at its best, the rich young ruler shows the tragedy of its refusal. His story is heartbreaking precisely because he asked exactly the right question — "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" — and then refused the only true answer. Jesus, looking on him with love, put His finger on the one thing the man could not surrender: his wealth. He wanted eternal life, but not at the cost of his comfort, and so he went away sorrowful.

Chochote tusichoweza kuwazia kukiachilia ndicho hasa kinachotumiliki. Yeye ndiye alikuwa tumbili ambaye hakutaka kufungua mkono wake. His wealth had become his wineskin — brittle, rigid, unable to stretch for the new wine of discipleship. Notice that Jesus did not give this command to everyone; He gave it to this man because money was precisely his god, the one rival to Christ in his heart. The point is not that every Christian must sell everything, but that nothing may be allowed to hold the place that belongs to Christ alone. Whatever we cannot imagine surrendering is exactly the thing that owns us. He was the monkey who would not open his hand.

6. Divai Mpya ya Kutoa kwa Unyenyekevu6. The New Wine of Humble Giving

Mathayo 6:3-4 (SUV): "Bali wewe utoapo sadaka, mkono wako wa kushoto usijue ufanyalo mkono wako wa kuume; sadaka yako iwe kwa siri; na Baba yako aonaye sirini atakujazi waziwazi."Matthew 6:3-4 (NKJV): "But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly."

The third move guards the first two from corruption, for generosity can be poisoned by pride. Jesus says that when we give, we should do it so quietly that our left hand does not know what our right hand is doing. God is not impressed by loud, public giving that advertises the giver; heaven is moved by secret generosity that seeks no audience but God. The new wine gives joyfully and abundantly — and, importantly, humbly.

Barnaba ndiye kielelezo. Barnabas is the model. When the Spirit filled the early church and believers began to share everything, Barnabas, a Levite from Cyprus, sold a field and laid the money at the apostles' feet (Acts 4:36-37). He did it not for recognition but to meet real needs, and his quiet, Spirit-led sacrifice helped set the whole generous culture of the early church, inspiring others to live with open hands. True generosity does not keep score, does not seek applause, and does not give to be seen; it simply meets the need and lets God keep the books.

7. Ukarimu Unaomtumaini Mungu7. Generosity That Trusts God

This kind of giving only makes sense if God can be trusted to provide, and the lives of generous believers prove again and again that He can. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, began as a young minister living on thirty pounds a year. As his income climbed to many times that, he kept living on thirty pounds and gave all the rest away, having resolved to "gain all you can, save all you can, give all you can." He warned that wherever true religion spreads, wealth tends to increase, and with it the love of the world — so he guarded his own heart by relentless giving, and died with almost nothing in possessions but rich in every way that lasts.

Wawili waliomtumaini Mungu: J.C. Two who trusted God: J.C. Penney built his business on the Golden Rule and is widely remembered for practicing "reverse tithing" — giving away far more of his income than he kept. When the Depression broke him financially and physically, he recovered his faith in a sanitarium and kept on giving, faithful in both wealth and loss. And a Florida church, facing the seemingly impossible task of raising two million dollars debt-free, resolved simply to trust God for it and to go about it in a way that pleased Him — while many of their members were already giving sacrificially to missions rather than to their own comfort.

The same spirit shows in ordinary people who quietly reorder their whole lives around God's priorities — like Wycliffe workers who could earn large salaries but instead fly translators into remote jungles or give up comfortable careers to bring Scripture to people who have never had it, living month to month on the gifts of friends. They have simply decided that God's ways are not the world's ways, and that for the believer, materialism is immaterial.

8. Vifaa vya Vitendo kwa Ajili ya Ukarimu8. Practical Tools for Generosity

Scripture and these examples give us concrete ways to train a generous heart. First, give first, not last: "honor the LORD with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase" (Proverbs 3:9). Generosity that comes off the top, before everything else claims the money, is generosity that means it. Second, give in secret: practice the kind of giving no one else sees, because anonymous giving trains the heart to please God rather than people, exactly as Jesus taught.

Hatutupi rasilimali zetu tunapotoa; tunazihamishia kwenye akaunti pekee iliyo salama kabisa.Third, expand generosity beyond money: be generous with your time, your attention, your forgiveness, your hospitality, and your encouragement, for a stingy heart and an open heart show up in far more than dollars. And fourth, remember the reward: the treasure we lay up in heaven never rusts, never fades, and never fails (Matthew 6:19-20). We are not throwing our resources away when we give; we are transferring them to the only account that is utterly secure.

9. Je, Utashikilia, au Utaachilia?9. Will You Cling, or Release?

Wote wawili walisimama kwenye njia panda ile ile, nasi pia tunasimama hapo, kila mara fedha zinapoomba kuwa bwana wetu.So we come back to the monkey with its fist full of peanuts, and to the question the whole unit has been pressing. The trap is still set today, and it is the same trap: a hand that will not open. The rich young ruler clung, and went away sorrowful; the widow released, and was honored forever by the Lord Himself. Both stood at the same fork, and so do we, every time money asks to be our master.

Radical Christianity does not fit in the old wineskins of greed and hoarding; it calls us to a generosity that is sacrificial, joyful, and humble. And it all begins with a heart whose treasure is in the right place, because where our treasure is, our heart will follow. The God who became poor to make us rich is asking only that we open our hand. Will you cling — or will you release?
