1. Viriba Vipya vya Imani1. New Wineskins of Faith

Mithali 3:5-6 (SUV): "Mtumaini BWANA kwa moyo wako wote, wala usizitegemee akili zako mwenyewe; katika njia zako zote mkiri yeye, naye atayanyosha mapito yako."Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."

When Jesus said no one pours new wine into old wineskins, He was describing the radical new life He brings. New wine ferments and expands, and old, brittle skins burst under the pressure; only new wineskins can stretch to hold it. In the same way, Jesus calls His disciples into a faith that stretches us beyond what feels safe or comfortable. He calls us to a radical trust — the kind that does not collapse under storms, worries, or uncertainty.

Proverbs sets the terms of that trust. We are to trust the LORD with all our heart, not a cautious portion of it, and specifically told to stop leaning on our own understanding — the hard part, since our understanding is exactly what we reach for when life turns frightening. Radical trust means letting go of the handrail of our own calculations and resting our whole weight on God. In this unit we watch that trust be stretched in three directions: trusting the Lord over storms, over worry, and over what we cannot yet see.

2. Bwana Juu ya Dhoruba2. The Lord Over Storms

Marko 4:39-40 (SUV): "Akaamka, akaukemea upepo, akaiambia bahari, 'Nyamaza, utulie!' Upepo ukakoma, kukawa shwari kuu. Akawaambia, 'Mbona mmekuwa waoga? Hamna imani bado?'"Mark 4:39-40 (NKJV): "Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, 'Peace, be still!' And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, 'Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?'"

Akasimama, akaukemea upepo, akayaambia mawimbi, "Nyamaza, utulie." Dhoruba ikakoma mara moja, nao wakanong'onezana kwa mshangao, "Ni nani huyu basi, hata upepo na bahari humtii?"Jesus asked His disciples to cross the Sea of Galilee, and as they sailed a violent storm broke out, so fierce that the boat began filling with water. These were seasoned fishermen, yet the waves terrified them — and where was Jesus? Asleep in the stern, resting on a cushion. They shook Him awake: "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?" He stood, rebuked the wind, and said to the waves, "Peace, be still." The storm stopped at once, and they whispered in astonishment, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"

The lesson is not that storms will never come. The lesson is that the Lord of the storm is in the boat with you. Radical trust knows that His presence is greater than any wave. Notice that His question to them was not "why did the storm come?" but "how is it that you have no faith?" The danger was real, but so was the sleeping Savior beside them — and faith is simply remembering who is in the boat.

Elisabeth Elliot: In 1956 five young missionaries were speared to death in Ecuador while trying to reach the Huaorani tribe. Jim Elliot's wife, Elisabeth, just twenty-nine with a baby daughter, was left a widow. She could have surrendered to bitterness and fear. Instead she trusted the Lord of the storm, and two years later went to live among the very tribe that had killed her husband, showing them the love of Christ. In time many Huaorani came to faith — including some of the men who had held the spears.

3. Uwepo Kuliko Matokeo3. Presence Over Outcome

Elisabeth Elliot's story teaches us what trust actually rests on, because her storm was never calmed in the way she might have wished. Her husband was not given back to her. And yet the same Jesus who stilled the Sea of Galilee was unmistakably with her in the deeper storm, and ruled over it to bring a harvest she could never have engineered. Faith does not always stop the storm; what it always does is anchor us to the Savior who rules over it.

This corrects a shallow idea of trust. We often assume trusting God means He will give us the calm we ask for — the healing, the rescue, the restored situation. But the disciples' deepest need in the boat was not calmer water; it was to know who was with them. You may not be able to calm your storm, but you can rest in the One who commands it. So the first instinct of radical trust, when the wind rises, is to pray first rather than panic first — turning at once to the One asleep in the stern, who is in fact Lord of the wind and the waves.

4. Bwana Juu ya Wasiwasi4. The Lord Over Worry

Bali utafuteni kwanza ufalme wa Mungu, na haki yake; na hayo yote mtazidishiwa."Matthew 6:31-33 (NKJV): "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?'... For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."

From the dramatic storm Jesus turns to the quiet, daily storm of anxiety: food, drink, clothing, the ordinary cares that keep us awake at night. "Do not worry about your life," He says, and points to the birds of the air, which neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, yet the heavenly Father feeds them. He points to the lilies of the field, which neither toil nor spin, yet not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass, will He not much more clothe you?

Then He asks the question that exposes worry for what it is: "which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?" Worry accomplishes nothing; it changes no outcome and adds not a single hour to our lives. It is, in the end, a failure to reckon with the Father's care. So Jesus gives the antidote: "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." Radical trust surrenders anxiety to the Father who already knows exactly what we need before we ask.

5. Kutoka "Itakuwaje Kama?" Hadi "Hata Kama"5. From "What If?" to "Even If"

The practical shape of trusting God over worry is a change of vocabulary in the heart. Anxiety speaks the language of "what if?" — what if the paycheck runs out, what if the diagnosis is bad, what if I cannot provide? Faith answers in the language of "even if." Even if the paycheck is small, even if the refrigerator is empty, even if the future is uncertain — God is still faithful, and He still knows what I need. The "what if" multiplies fears that may never arrive; the "even if" rests on a God who is certain to remain good.

Empty fridge, full faith: Believers have testified to this again and again in hard economic seasons. Picture a single mother in a deep recession, recently out of work, bills piling up, the refrigerator nearly empty, lying awake over how she will feed her children. One night she breaks down in the kitchen and prays, "Lord, I don't know how we'll eat tomorrow, but You promised to care for us, and I trust You." The next morning a friend from church arrives with bags of groceries: "I couldn't sleep last night — I felt God telling me you needed this." Such testimonies, repeated in countless lives, make one point: God shows us we need not live in fear, because He knows what we need before we ask.

So the disciplines of trust are simple but daily: surrender each worry to the Lord, who carries it better than we do; seek first the kingdom, choosing obedience, generosity, and worship over anxiety; and begin each day thanking God for His provision even before we see it arrive, because gratitude is faith remembering that the Father has never failed.

6. Bwana wa Kuona6. The Lord of Sight

Waebrania 11:8 (SUV): "Kwa imani Ibrahimu alipoitwa, alitii, akatoka aende mahali pale atakapopapokea kuwa urithi, akatoka asijue aendako."Hebrews 11:8 (NKJV): "By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going."

The third stretching of trust concerns the future we cannot see. Abraham was called to leave his home for a land he had never laid eyes on, and he went out not knowing where he was going. Romans 4 tells us he believed God's promise of a son even when his body and Sarah's were as good as dead. This is radical trust at its furthest reach: to obey before the map is clear, to stake everything on the promise of God rather than on the evidence of our eyes.

Adoniram Judson: In 1812 Adoniram and Ann Judson sailed from Boston to Burma as among the first American missionaries, leaving family and security for a dangerous unknown. The work was agonizingly slow — seven years before the first convert. Disease struck repeatedly; they buried children. Adoniram was imprisoned nearly two years in filthy conditions, while Ann risked her life daily to bring him food until her own health failed and she died young. From the outside it looked like failure. Yet in his darkest hour Adoniram wrote, "the future is as bright as the promises of God." Today more than four million Christians in Myanmar trace their heritage to the Judsons' faithfulness.

7. Kuenenda kwa Imani, Si kwa Kuona7. Walk by Faith, Not by Sight

Judson could not see the harvest in his lifetime, but he trusted the Lord of sight — and that is the heart of what Paul means when he writes, "we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7). To walk by sight is to let only the visible, present evidence decide what we believe and how we act. To walk by faith is to let the promises of God decide, even when present reality makes those promises look impossible. Abraham did it leaving home; Judson did it in a Burmese prison; and God calls every disciple to it.

This means radical trust will regularly require us to step into obedience without seeing the whole map, and to keep trusting God's promises precisely when circumstances seem to contradict them. The line Judson clung to is worth carrying into every dark season: the future is as bright as the promises of God. Our feelings will often disagree, insisting the situation is hopeless — but faith does not take its orders from feelings. It looks past what is seen to the One who has spoken, and obeys.

8. Imani Kuliko Hisia8. Faith Over Feelings

Across all three of these movements runs a single thread: the choice of faith over feelings. In the boat, the disciples' feelings screamed that they were perishing, while the truth was that the Lord of the sea was with them. In the empty kitchen, feelings say there is no way, while the truth is that the Father knows our needs. In the dark prison, feelings say the mission has failed, while the truth is that God's promises are sure. Emotions are real, but they are not reliable guides; they report how things feel, not how things are.

So radical trust learns to act on what is true rather than on what is felt. When emotions say "fear," faith says "follow." This is not the denial of feeling — Jesus Himself was honest about anguish in Gethsemane — but the refusal to let feeling have the final word. We acknowledge the fear, and then choose to lean not on our own understanding but on the LORD with all our heart. The settled choice to trust, made again and again in small things, is what steadies us when the great storms come.

9. Unahitaji Tumaini la Kujitoa Kikamilifu Wapi?9. Where Do You Need Radical Trust?

Radical trust is the stretching of new wineskins. The old way — fear, anxiety, self-reliance — bursts under the pressure of life's storms, but the new life Christ gives stretches us to hold faith. He is Lord over storms, and the wind and waves obey Him. He is Lord over worry, and your Father knows what you need. He is Lord of sight, and your future rests securely on His promises rather than on what you can presently see.

So the question comes to each of us personally. Where do you need radical trust today — in some storm that will not calm, in worries that steal your sleep, in a future you cannot make out? The Lord of the storm, of worry, and of sight is the same Lord, and He is calling you to stretch, to lean less on your own understanding and to trust Him more deeply. Trust in the LORD with all your heart; He has never once failed those who do, and the future before them is as bright as the promises of God.
