MwelekeoOrientation
Eleven units ago, this course opened with Paul standing among the altars of Athens, provoked in spirit yet patient in method, building a bridge from what the Athenians already believed toward the God they did not yet know. This final unit closes the same way it began, because everything in between has been an extended exercise in learning to do what Paul did: understand a religious world honestly, name clearly where it echoes truth and where it departs from it, and proclaim Christ without contempt and without compromise. This capstone unit does not introduce new content so much as it gathers the whole course into a single, coherent theology of religions — an answer to the question every unit has been circling: given everything we now know about how the nations have sought God, what should the church actually believe, and do, about the religious world around it?
Before drawing the threads together, it is worth remembering the full distance this course has traveled. From the universal religious impulse in Unit 1, through Judaism and Islam's shared Abrahamic roots, through Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese religion, and Sikhism's very different pictures of ultimate reality, through the modern movements of Unit 8, the comparative synthesis of Unit 9, the apologetic method of Unit 10, and the folk traditions of Cuba and Mexico in Unit 11 — you have surveyed, in twelve units, a genuine cross-section of how humanity has sought, worshiped, and misunderstood the God who made it. This unit asks what all of that adds up to.
It is worth being honest about what this final unit cannot do. It cannot condense eleven units of careful, tradition-by-tradition study into a shortcut that replaces the specific knowledge each prior unit built. A pastor tempted to skip ahead to this capstone without having done the work of Units 2 through 11 will find here a framework with nothing to hang it on — the four-question comparison, the apologetic method, and the charge this unit issues all depend on the specific content those earlier units supplied. What this unit offers instead is the connective tissue: the theological account of why the course was organized the way it was, and what the whole of it demands of a working pastor once the course itself has ended.
I. Misimamo Mitatu, Kwa Mara NyingineI. Three Positions, Revisited
That promise is kept here. Exclusivism holds that explicit, conscious faith in Jesus Christ is necessary for salvation; general revelation leaves all people without excuse (Romans 1:20) but does not itself save. Exclusivists appeal to texts like John 14:6 and Acts 4:12, and to the New Testament's consistent missionary urgency — if the unevangelized could be saved through general revelation alone, Paul's willingness to be shipwrecked, beaten, and imprisoned to bring them the gospel becomes difficult to explain. Inclusivism, associated historically with theologians like Karl Rahner and, among evangelicals, cautiously explored by figures like John Sanders and Clark Pinnock, holds that Christ's atoning work remains the sole ground of salvation for anyone ever saved, but allows that God may apply its benefits to some who respond in genuine faith to the light they have received, even without explicit gospel knowledge — appealing to figures like Melchizedek and Job, who appear to know and worship the true God without belonging to Israel's covenant community, and to Cornelius in Acts 10, whose prayers and alms "came up as a memorial before God" prior to hearing the gospel from Peter, though Cornelius still required Peter's preaching to be saved (Acts 11:14).
Pluralism, associated with philosophers like John Hick, holds that multiple religious paths lead equally to God or ultimate reality, treating claims of Christ's uniqueness as one culturally conditioned perspective among others equally valid. This course has consistently declined to treat pluralism as a live option for a Christian minister, and Unit 9's comparative work explained why: the traditions surveyed do not merely differ in surface ritual but contradict one another on the most basic questions of what is real, making the claim that they all lead to the same destination a claim none of the traditions themselves would recognize as an honest description of what they teach. Between exclusivism and inclusivism, however, this course has maintained throughout that faithful, Bible-believing pastors have genuinely disagreed for generations, and this unit does not resolve that disagreement for you. What this unit does insist on is that both positions agree on far more than they disagree: both affirm salvation is through Christ's atoning work alone, both affirm the necessity and urgency of world missions, and neither position offers grounds for the pastoral complacency pluralism invites.
It is worth naming plainly what is at stake in getting this distinction right. A pastor who quietly slides from inclusivism into functional pluralism — treating the possibility that God may save some through the light of general revelation as a reason missions is merely helpful rather than urgent — has abandoned a position this unit has actually described. Genuine inclusivism, as held by its careful evangelical proponents, has never treated the possibility of salvation apart from gospel proclamation as grounds for withholding that proclamation; if anything, Romans 10:14-15, examined below, presses every position studied in this unit toward the same missionary urgency, since even the inclusivist's own account of how "the light they have received" operates leaves the ordinary, commanded means of salvation as hearing and believing the preached word.
II. Kile Ambacho Warumi Inafundisha Kwa Kweli Kuhusu Wasiofikiwa na InjiliII. What Romans Actually Teaches About the Unevangelized
The sharpest form of this question — what becomes of a person who never hears the gospel through no fault of his own — deserves direct engagement with the text most commonly cited on both sides. Romans 1:18-20 teaches that general revelation through creation is sufficient to render all people "without excuse," but explicitly for the purpose of establishing universal guilt, not universal salvation: "although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God" (Romans 1:21). Romans 2:14-16 extends this to the moral law written on the heart, "their conscience also bearing witness," again in a passage whose surrounding argument (Romans 3:9-20, 23) concludes that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" — general revelation establishes accountability, and Paul's argument moves from it directly to universal condemnation, not to an alternate path of salvation running alongside the gospel.
Romans 10:13-15 then asks the question most directly relevant to missions: "how then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent?" The rhetorical structure of this passage assumes hearing and believing the preached gospel as the ordinary means of salvation, which is precisely why Paul immediately pivots to the urgency of sending: "how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace." Whatever room a pastor believes Scripture leaves for God's mercy toward those who have never heard — and this unit leaves that question, as Unit 1 promised, for the pastor's own careful study rather than resolving it by fiat — Romans itself treats the sending of preachers, not confidence in an alternate path, as the church's actual responsibility and this passage's own emphasis.
Notice, too, what Paul does not do in this passage. He does not pause to speculate confidently about the eternal fate of those the church has not yet reached, weighing exclusivist against inclusivist possibilities before deciding whether sending is worth the cost. He treats the question as settled in the only direction that actually matters for the church's practice: people need to hear, therefore preachers must be sent, therefore the church must send them. A pastor who has spent eleven units learning to understand other religious systems with genuine care should let that same care sharpen, rather than dull, this missionary urgency — the better a pastor understands what a Muslim, a Buddhist, or a santera actually believes, the more clearly he should see exactly what the gospel offers that their own system cannot supply, and the more urgent, not less, the task of bringing it to them becomes.
III. Agizo Kuu kama Jibu la KanisaIII. The Great Commission as the Church's Answer
Whatever position a pastor holds on the fate of the unevangelized, Scripture leaves no ambiguity about what the church is commanded to do about it. Matthew 28:18-20, the Great Commission, follows directly from Christ's claim to "all authority in heaven and on earth" — the missionary mandate is not a suggestion offered alongside competing priorities but a command issued by the risen, universally authoritative Christ, extending to "all the nations," a phrase that would have included, for its first hearers, every tradition this course has surveyed. This is the practical payoff of eleven units of comparative study: not academic curiosity about other religions, but equipping for exactly the task Christ commanded, carried out with exactly the posture Paul modeled at the Areopagus — patient understanding joined to clear proclamation, aimed not at winning arguments but making disciples, "teaching them to observe all things" Christ commanded, a lifelong process of discipleship rather than a single decisive conversation.
The scope of this course itself has been a small enactment of the Commission's scope. Judaism and Islam, the traditions closest to the church's own Abrahamic roots; Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Chinese religion, traditions that developed entirely independently across Asia; the modern movements examined in Unit 8; and the folk traditions woven into the daily life of Cuba and Mexico in Unit 11 — together represent a genuine cross-section of "all the nations" Christ commanded His church to reach. A pastor who has completed this course carries knowledge few pastors anywhere possess: an accurate, respectful, and theologically clear understanding of how the great majority of the world's population actually understands God, salvation, and the human condition, together with a tested method for engaging every one of them with the gospel.
None of this knowledge, it is worth stressing one final time, is an end in itself. Every unit in this course has warned against the temptation to treat comparative religious knowledge as an academic trophy rather than a pastoral tool, and this final unit repeats that warning with the full weight of everything the course has covered behind it. Knowledge of Islam's Five Pillars that never leads to an actual conversation with an actual Muslim neighbor has failed its purpose. Understanding of Buddhism's diagnosis of suffering that never comforts an actual grieving parishioner drawn to meditation has failed its purpose. The entire value of this course is realized only in the ordinary, unglamorous work of pastoral ministry — a conversation on a doorstep, a question answered honestly in a hospital room, a new believer patiently discipled out of years of Santería practice — not in the possession of facts for their own sake.
IV. Agizo kwa MhitimuIV. A Charge to the Graduate
You began this course with Paul at the Areopagus, and you end it there as well, because that posture — careful observation before confrontation, genuine respect joined to unflinching proclamation, patience toward the person combined with clarity about the truth — is not a technique this course taught you to deploy once and set aside, but a lifelong pastoral disposition. The knowledge you now carry, of Judaism's covenant, Islam's submission, Hinduism's karma, Buddhism's craving, Chinese filial piety, Sikhism's equality, the modern movements' borrowed vocabulary, and the folk traditions of your own Cuban and Mexican context, is not trivia to display but understanding to deploy in service of actual people God has placed in your path — a neighbor, a family member, a stranger at your door, each one, in Paul's words, "not far from" the God who made them, groping toward a truth this course has equipped you to proclaim with both accuracy and love.
Kozi imekwisha. Kazi iliyokuandaa kwa ajili yake ndiyo inaanza tu.Scripture closes the New Testament with a vision of every nation, tribe, people, and tongue gathered before the throne (Revelation 7:9) — the ultimate answer to every religious system this course has studied, each of which, in its own way, has been reaching toward a unity and a peace only the Lamb who was slain can actually provide. You are commissioned, as every pastor is commissioned, to labor toward that vision in the small, particular corner of it God has assigned you: the specific neighbors, the specific families, the specific congregation He has placed under your care. Go, therefore, and make disciples — not of an abstraction called "the nations," but of the actual Muslim, Buddhist, Santero, and secular neighbor this course has prepared you to meet with the same patient love and unyielding truth Paul carried onto Mars Hill nearly two thousand years ago. The course is finished. The work it prepared you for is only beginning.
