Tunachohifadhi.

Planning Around the Moods

A worship service is not a random pile of songs, prayers, and announcements thrown together at the last minute. It is planned, and it is planned around moods or motifs. There are five such moods, and they give the service its shape and its movement. The worship leader's task is to examine these moods and decide how and where to use each one, so that the service builds rather than wanders. A service planned around the moods has unity and progression; a service thrown together has neither.

II. Utambuzi, Sifa, na MaungamoII. Recognition, Praise, and Confession

The first mood is recognition, sometimes called adoration or vision. It is first of all God's recognition of us. Read Isaiah 6, where the prophet sees the Lord high and lifted up. We enter recognition through silence and meditation, through a call to worship, and through an invocation. This is where the service properly begins, with the awe of standing before the holy God.

The second mood is praise or thanksgiving. Through hymns, prayers, and Scriptures we glorify God. Genuine gratitude rises from the soul as God satisfies our hunger; we thank Him for His love, for life itself, and for the necessities of life. The third mood is confession. In confession we see ourselves as God sees us and we agree with Him about our sin, as 1 John 1:9 teaches, longing for cleansing. Notice that Isaiah confessed only after he had seen God's holiness, recognition leads naturally to confession. And confession should be specific, not general. David understood that any sin is finally a sin against God.

III. Kutiwa Nuru na Kujitoa WakfuIII. Illumination and Dedication

Kutiwa nuru kunakusudiwa kumgusa mtu mzima wote. The fourth mood is illumination or proclamation. This is the moment when God moves us, and it is accomplished above all through the reading of Scripture and through preaching, though drama, the children's sermon, and testimony may serve it too. Here we must remember a key distinction: teaching touches the mind, but preaching touches the mind, the heart, and the will. Illumination is meant to move the whole person.

The fifth mood is dedication or consecration. Here we give back to God, and it normally comes in two places. In the offering we dedicate our resources; in the invitation we offer ourselves. Both are acts of returning to God what we first received from Him. Notice how the moods carry the worshipper on a journey: we recognize God, we praise Him, we confess our sin, we are moved by His word, and we dedicate ourselves back to Him. That is the architecture of a service.

IV. Mipaka Miwili, Mashauri, na KanuniIV. Extremes, Counsels, and Principles

There are two extremes to avoid in planning. One is rigid formalism, a burdensome structure that quenches the Spirit. The other is pure spontaneity with no order at all. As the old saying goes, if I am your leader, which way do we go? Worship needs both dignity and planning; wisdom lies in the balance. A few counsels help: involve your people in the music, the message, and the planning; make use of seasonal events without being a slave to the calendar; provide variety, but change gradually, for people need the familiar; and make sure all the facilities and people are ready before the service begins.

Kanuni tano huongoza mipango mizuri. Watu hawatamfuata kiongozi ambaye anaendesha programu tu.Five principles guide good planning. Unity means the whole service is one and every element fits together. Order means real structure, accomplished with an order of service. Proportion means giving each part the right amount of time. Movement means the service moves forward, building toward something. And climax means the service reaches a high point, ideally the invitation. Finally, the one who leads must prepare himself spiritually and emotionally, pray ahead of time, come enthusiastic and joyful so the people catch that spirit, dress appropriately, and let the congregation see him genuinely worshipping. People will not follow a leader who is merely managing a program.
