Utangulizi — Somo Ambalo Yesu HakulikwepaIntroduction — The Subject Jesus Did Not Avoid
There is an old myth that money is somehow beneath the spiritual leader — that a true man of God should not dirty his hands with budgets and bank accounts. But you cannot read the Gospels honestly and believe that myth. Our Lord spoke about money constantly — more than He spoke of heaven, more than He spoke of prayer. He knew what we keep forgetting: that a man's wallet is wired directly to his heart, and that how a church handles its money is a spiritual matter from the first peso to the last. So we will not be too pious to talk about money and budgets. We will follow the Master, who looked the subject full in the face and called it by its name — a test.
I. Hamwezi Kumtumikia Mungu na MaliI. You Cannot Serve God and Money
Ikiwa kitini mwa enzi, huharibu kila kitu inachokigusa, wachungaji wakiwemo.Begin where Jesus begins, with a line that allows no middle ground: "No servant can serve two masters... You cannot serve God and mammon" (Luke 16:13). Mammon is money personified, money with a will of its own, money that wants to be lord. And Jesus says you will have a master; the only question is which one. Money is a wonderful servant and a terrible master. Under God it builds churches, feeds the hungry, and sends missionaries. On the throne it corrupts everything it touches, pastors included.
And just before it, He gives the principle that governs this whole unit: "He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much... if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?" (Luke 16:10-11). Hear what He says. Money is the very least — the training ground. God watches how a man handles the small, the dirty, and the temporary thing of money to decide whether He can trust him with the large and eternal thing of souls. Show me how a pastor handles the offering plate, and I will show you whether God can trust him with a flock. Faithfulness with money is the test that comes before the trust.
II. Amana TakatifuII. The Sacred Trust
So whose money is it? Settle it the way we settled the question of the flock in Unit 2: it is not yours. When a widow lays her offering on the plate, she is not paying the pastor; she is giving to God. That money is a sacred trust — the worship of the people, laid on the altar, passing through your hands on its way to the work of God. The man who forgets this and begins to think of the church's money as his money has committed the first and most deadly error of church finance.
The leader, then, handles the money exactly as he handles the flock: as a steward of what belongs to Another. He will give account for every peso, not first to an auditor but to God. This one conviction — this is God's money, entrusted by His people — will keep a man honest when no one is watching, careful when the amounts are large, and humble when the budget is healthy. Lose that conviction, and no accounting system on earth will save him. Hold it, and he will handle the Lord's money as the holy thing it is.
III. Hesabu Gharama: Bajeti kama MpangoIII. Count the Cost: The Budget as a Plan
Now the practical tool, and notice that Jesus Himself recommends it. "For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, to see whether he has enough to finish it?" (Luke 14:28). That is budgeting, straight from the lips of the Lord. A church that rushes into commitments without sitting down to count the cost is the man who laid a foundation and could not finish, and "all who see it begin to mock him" (Luke 14:29). Budgeting is not unbelief; it is obedience to a direct word of Christ.
Hesabu gharama. Fanya mpango. Fedha na zifuate utume. So understand what a budget really is. A budget is not a cage; it is a plan expressed in money. It is your priorities translated into numbers. Show me a church budget and I will read you the church's true values, because money does not lie — a church spends on what it truly treasures, whatever it says it treasures. This is why budgeting belongs in a leadership course and not only an accounting course. When you build a budget, you are putting the vision of Unit 3 into figures, deciding before God where the people's offerings will go. Count the cost. Make the plan. Let the money follow the mission.
IV. Waaminifu Mbele ya WoteIV. Honest Before All
Now hear the apostle Paul, who handled an enormous relief offering for Jerusalem, tell you how to keep your hands clean. "Avoiding this: that anyone should blame us in this lavish gift which is administered by us — providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men" (2 Corinthians 8:20-21). Read it twice. Paul was an apostle; surely his integrity was beyond question. Yet he refused to carry the money alone. He traveled with trusted brothers chosen by the churches, so that no one could so much as whisper an accusation.
There is the rule that has saved a thousand ministries and whose absence has destroyed a thousand more: be honest not only before God, who sees the heart, but before men, who see only the appearance. It is not enough to be honest; you must be visibly honest. This is why a church's money must never be controlled by one person alone — least of all the pastor — by himself. More than one hand counts it. More than one signature releases it. The books are open. There are reports the congregation can see and an audit they can trust. This is not suspicion; it is wisdom and love. The leader who builds these walls of transparency protects the church not only from himself; he protects himself from the accusation that will surely come, and he protects the gospel from reproach. Avoid even the appearance of evil where money is concerned, and you take a weapon out of the enemy's hand.
V. Furaha ya UkarimuV. The Joy of Generosity
But money in the church is not only to be guarded; it is to be given, and given with joy. "He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:6-7). And the promise that frees us to give: "And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you... may have an abundance for every good work" (2 Corinthians 9:8).
A church that speaks of money only to receive it has missed the point entirely. The leader's task is to teach and to model generosity — to lead the people into the sheer joy of cheerful, open-handed giving, because that giving does them good. A generous church is a happy church, and a stingy church is a sick one, however full its accounts. So preach giving not as the church's need to receive but as the giver's privilege to sow, trusting the God who makes grace abound. And let the leaders give first and give most, for no man can call a people to a generosity he does not practice himself.
VI. Kupenda FedhaVI. The Love of Money
Wachungaji huanguka hapa. Askofu, Paulo anasema, lazima "asiwe mpenda fedha" (1 Timotheo 3:3).Now the warning, sharp and unavoidable. "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows" (1 Timothy 6:10). Mark the words well — not money, but the love of money; and not a trivial danger, but a root from which all kinds of evil spring. And note whom Paul warns: not rich pagans, but men who "stray from the faith." Pastors fall here. The overseer, Paul says, must not be "greedy for money" (1 Timothy 3:3).
Linda moyo wako, ndugu. Ziweke fedha mahali pake kama mtumishi, wala usiruhusu kamwe kitu unachokishughulikia kila wiki kiwe kitu unachokipenda. So the leader must mount a guard over his own heart at exactly the point where money meets ministry. The danger is not that he will steal — most never do. The danger is subtler: that money will quietly rise from servant to master, that he will begin to make decisions for the offering rather than for the Lord, that contentment will slip away and greed move in. The remedy is contentment, "for we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out" (1 Timothy 6:7). Guard your heart, brother. Keep money in its place as a servant, and never let the thing you handle every week become the thing you love.
VII. Mtenda Kazi AstahiliVII. The Laborer Is Worthy
Lest all this make us stingy with those who serve, Paul corrects us in the other direction too. "Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. For the Scripture says, 'You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,' and, 'The laborer is worthy of his wages'" (1 Timothy 5:17-18). Faithful stewardship is not only about guarding money from waste; it is about using it justly, and that includes justly providing for those who give their lives to the work.
A church that leaves its pastor and its workers without what they need, while sitting on full accounts, is not being thrifty; it is muzzling the ox, and God notices. So the same budget that funds the mission must also honor the worker. Here is the beautiful balance of this whole unit: the leader himself must not be greedy, but the church must not be stingy with him; he holds money loosely for his own sake, and the church holds him generously for his. Guard it as a steward, give it as a holy thing, and provide for the worker as a just and grateful people. Be faithful with the unrighteous mammon, and the God who tested you with the very least will commit to you the true riches.
