Tunachohifadhi.

Utangulizi — Rasilimali yenye Thamani Kuliko ZoteIntroduction — The Most Precious Resource

Usiwamalize. Wasimamie kama wakili. We have talked about vision, about structure, about money. But a church is not finally made of plans and pesos; it is made of people. And the moment a leader starts treating those people as resources to be spent rather than souls to be shepherded, he has stopped being a pastor and started being a foreman. Here is the truth that must govern everything in this unit: in the church, managing personnel is not a corporate skill borrowed from the world. It is shepherding by another name. The deacon, the Sunday school teacher, the volunteer who unlocks the building — every one of them is a person God entrusted to you and gifted by His Spirit. "As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God" (1 Peter 4:10). You are a steward of people and their gifts. Do not consume them. Steward them.

I. Watu Si VyomboI. People Are Not Tools

There is a kind of leader who is wonderful at getting things done and terrible with the people who do them. He fills slots, assigns tasks, hits his numbers — and leaves behind a trail of used-up, quietly bitter workers who will never volunteer again. He has confused two very different things: a workforce and a flock. A workforce exists to produce; you drive it. A flock exists to be fed; you tend it. The church is a flock.

So fix this in your mind before we go one step further: the volunteer is not free labor. The staff member is not a hired hand to be worked to the bone. Each is a brother or sister exercising a gift God gave them, and your task is to be a good steward of that gift — to receive it, place it, develop it, and honor it. The leader who uses people will always have a personnel problem, because people can feel the difference between being shepherded and being used. Lead people as what they are: not your tools, but God's children, lent to you for a season.

I am not your boss; I am your fellow laborer." When God first began sending inmate chaplains to serve alongside me in a prison, that is what I told each of them. God had called them to be there, so each man would have to seek out what God wanted him to do — and then do it. And each one, in turn, took up a different work. Every morning we met for devotions and to share what lay before us that day. Before long the officers themselves were saying that these men had helped turn the whole prison around: the violence fell, inmate against inmate and inmate against officer alike. I take no credit for it. I only refused to stand over them as a foreman, and God placed each man in the work He had gifted him to do.

II. Pamoja Naye Kabla ya KutumwaII. With Him Before Sent

Yesu alikaa miaka mitatu na watu kumi na wawili kabla ya kuwakabidhi kanisa — akila pamoja nao, akiwafundisha, akiwasahihisha, akiwa pamoja nao tu.Watch how the Lord Himself built His team, because He did it backwards from how we usually do. "Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach" (Mark 3:14). Read the order slowly. First, that they might be with Him. Then, that He might send them out. Being before doing. Relationship before task. Jesus spent three years with twelve men before He turned the church over to them — eating with them, teaching them, correcting them, simply being with them.

Sasa tazama jinsi sisi tunavyofanya mara nyingi: tunamwandikisha mtu, tunampeleka kwenye kazi, na hatumwendelezi hata kidogo. Tunampigia simu tu tunapohitaji kitu, kisha tunashangaa kwa nini anapotea polepole. Ukitaka watendakazi wanaodumu, kaa nao kabla ya kuwatuma. Wamiminie watu kabla ya kuwategemea. Kina cha kile wanachoweza kulifanyia kanisa mara chache huzidi kina cha uhusiano uliojenga nao.Now look at how we often do it: we recruit a person, deploy them to a task, and never develop them at all. We call them only when we need something, and then wonder why they drift away. The leader who only ever shows up at a volunteer's door with a request has built a transaction, not a relationship — and transactions burn out. If you want workers who last, be with them before you send them. Pour into the people before you lean on them. The depth of what they can do for the church will rarely exceed the depth of the relationship you have built with them.

III. Andikisha kwa Kuzingatia TabiaIII. Recruit for Character

When a slot is empty, the pressure is to grab the first warm body who says yes. Resist it. Scripture sets the bar higher than availability. When the early church needed men merely to wait tables and distribute food, the standard was still: "seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom" (Acts 6:3). Good reputation. Full of the Spirit. Wisdom — to hand out bread. How much more for those who teach and lead?

Paul makes it a rule. Deacons must be examined first: "let these also first be tested; then let them serve, being found blameless" (1 Timothy 3:10). And to Timothy directly: "Do not lay hands on anyone hastily" (1 Timothy 5:22). Proven, then placed. Tested, then trusted. Hear me, brother: a gifted but ungodly worker will cost you far more than an empty slot ever could. The talented man with no character will draw a crowd and then break their hearts. Recruit slowly. Watch a person serve in small things before you give them large things. Character is the qualification that matters most, and it is the one you cannot install after the fact.

IV. Weka kwa Karama, Si kwa PengoIV. Place by Gift, Not by Gap

Here is the error that quietly wastes more ministry than any other: we place people according to the gap in our organization rather than the gift in the person. The nursery needs a worker, so we ask the next willing soul — never mind that her gift is teaching and she will wither among the cribs. Meanwhile a born encourager is balancing the books and slowly dying inside.

Every believer has a gift (Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12; 1 Peter 4:10), and your task as a leader is first to discern that gift and then to place the person where it fits. There is a sweet spot for every worker — the place where their gift, their passion, and a real need in the body all meet — and a wise leader spends real effort helping people find it. Watch what happens when you get it right: the person serving squarely in their gift seems tireless, joyful, hard to stop. And watch what happens when you get it wrong: the person serving outside their gift burns out fast and blames themselves for a weariness that is really just a bad fit. Do not merely fill gaps with bodies. Deploy gifts into ministry. Match the person to the place God built them for.

V. Huduma ya BarnabaV. The Barnabas Ministry

Let me introduce you to the patron saint of personnel development. His name was Joseph, but the apostles nicknamed him Barnabas, "Son of Encouragement" (Acts 4:36), and he had a gift the church desperately needs in every generation: he saw what people could become and he invested in them before they had proven it.

Mara mbili jambo hilo lilibadilisha historia. Sauli aliyekuwa ameongoka karibuni alipofika Yerusalemu na kanisa zima likamwogopa — huyu ndiye mtu aliyekuwa akiwawinda — alikuwa Barnaba ambaye "alimtwaa, akamleta kwa mitume" (Matendo 9:27). Barnaba alimthibitisha mtu ambaye hakuwa amejaribiwa, ambaye angekuwa Paulo. Twice it changed history. When a freshly converted Saul came to Jerusalem and the whole church was afraid of him — this was the man who had hunted them — it was Barnabas who "took him and brought him to the apostles" (Acts 9:27). Barnabas vouched for the untried man who would become Paul. And later, when young John Mark had failed — he had abandoned the first missionary journey partway through — Paul wanted nothing more to do with him, and the disagreement was so sharp that Paul and Barnabas parted ways (Acts 15:37–39). Barnabas took the quitter, invested in him, and gave him a second chance. Years later even Paul came around: "Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry" (2 Timothy 4:11). The failure became useful because someone refused to write him off.

Every leader needs the Barnabas ministry — the eye that sees potential in the untried and the fallen, and the patience to develop them. The leader who only ever uses finished, polished people develops no one and leaves behind nothing. The Barnabas leader makes ministers out of nobodies. Be a Barnabas to somebody.

VI. Rejesha, UsitupeVI. Restore, Don't Discard

But what about the worker who fails, or even sins? Here the church must look least like the world. The world fires; the church restores. "Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness" (Galatians 6:1). The word restore is the word for setting a broken bone — painful, careful, aimed at making the limb useful again.

Now wisdom is needed here, and I will not pretend otherwise. Sometimes a person must be removed from a role for the good of the flock; stewardship of the church can require it. But removal from a role is not the same as disposal of a person, and even when you must take away a responsibility, the goal is never to destroy the worker but to restore the brother. Remember how Christ handled Peter, who had denied Him three times. He did not discard him. He sought him out, confronted him gently three times over, and recommissioned him: "Feed My sheep" (John 21:17). Confront clearly, correct in love, and aim always at restoration. Discarding people is not the shepherd's way.

VII. Mheshimu Mtendakazi na Kumlinda Asichoke Kupita KiasiVII. Honor the Laborer and Guard Against Burnout

Majukumu mawili ya mwisho, nayo yanakwenda pamoja. Kwanza, waheshimu watendakazi wako. Two final duties, and they belong together. First, honor your workers. People who serve need to be seen, thanked, and honored — not flattered, but genuinely appreciated. The unthanked volunteer does not usually complain; he simply, quietly, stops coming. The "laborer is worthy" principle from Unit 5 is not only about wages; it is about honor, and honor is mostly free. A leader who notices, names, and thanks the faithful will keep them.

Pili, walinde wasichoke kupita kiasi. Second, guard them against burnout. Every church has the eighty-twenty problem: a faithful few carry nearly everything until they collapse. Go back to Jethro in Unit 1 — if you do not distribute the load, you will wear out your very best people, the ones who never say no. So build rest and sustainability into the way you deploy your team. Watch your most willing workers especially, because their willingness is exactly what will let you ruin them if you are careless. The shepherd feeds the flock; he does not feed on it. Steward the people God gives you as carefully as you steward His money and His truth — be with them, place them by gift, raise up the untried, restore the fallen, honor the faithful, and protect them from the very zeal that makes them precious. They are His most valuable resource, lent to your care.

— 1 Petro 4:10 (SUV)"As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God." — 1 Peter 4:10 (NKJV)
