All of us who came to live in a new country started over when we arrived. We may have left behind cars and houses, a familiar lifestyle, and old friends, and faced new challenges of culture, language, and daily life. But there was a gift hidden in it: a fresh start, a chance to become something better than we had been. The book of Ezra is the great Bible story of a fresh new start. After seventy years of captivity in Babylon, a remnant of the Jews came home to a ruined Jerusalem — the temple destroyed, the walls broken down — to begin again. And the keyword that holds the whole book together is one beautiful word: Restoration. Ezra shows us how God restores what sin has wrecked, whether in a nation, a church, or a single human heart.
Somo: Ezra — mwanzo mpya, na Mungu anayerejesha.Subject: Ezra — a fresh new start, and the God who restores.
Neno kuu: Urejesho. Andiko: Ezra 1:1-4.Keyword: Restoration. Text: Ezra 1:1-4.
Proposition: After the exile God stirred a king and a people to come home and rebuild; under Zerubbabel the temple was restored, and under Ezra the scribe the Word was restored and the people brought to repentance — and it all pictures how God, by His grace, restores the fallen and points us at last to the greater restoration we have in Christ.
Tutafuatilia hatua tano katika ujumbe wa Ezra.We will trace five movements in the message of Ezra.
I. Mwanzo MpyaI. A Fresh New Start
The book opens after Judah's seventy years in Babylon. Those born in exile had never seen the homeland; those old enough to remember knew that everything they had loved was gone. Yet the very first verse shows where any restoration begins — not with human resolve, but with God.
The Lord stirred up the spirit of a pagan emperor to send His people home, and then, verse five tells us, He stirred the spirits of the people themselves so that they rose up to go. Here is the first lesson of restoration: it is the work of God's grace from start to finish. We do not climb back to God on our own; He moves first, He stirs the heart, He opens the door — and those whose hearts He stirs respond and go. About fifty thousand made the long journey home. The God who began the work of bringing them back is the same God who still takes the initiative with every wandering soul, awakening in us a holy discontent with the far country and a longing to come home.
There is great comfort in beginning the book this way. The exiles were not summoned home because they had earned their way back, nor because seventy years had somehow paid their debt; they came home because God remembered His promise and moved. So it is with every spiritual comeback. The first stirring of desire you feel to return to God, the first discomfort with the life you have been living, is not something you manufactured — it is God already at work, calling you home. Do not despise that small beginning. It is the sign that the great Restorer has set His hand to your restoration.
II. Kazi ya Mfalme: Kujenga Upya HekaluII. The King's Work: Rebuilding the Temple
The book divides naturally between two men. The first is Zerubbabel, the governor, a descendant of David of the kingly line, and his work was to rebuild the temple, told in chapters one through six. The work of a king is to build. Notice the order of what they did. Their very first act, out under the open sky among the ruins, was to build an altar and renew the worship and sacrifice God had commanded. Before they raised a single wall, they restored worship, for restoration always begins at the altar. Then they laid the foundation of the temple, and the sound that went up was strange and mixed.
The young shouted for joy at a beginning; the old wept, remembering Solomon's glorious temple now lost. And then came opposition, as it always does. The adversaries of the land offered to "help" build — but their worship was mixed with idolatry, and to join with them would have corrupted the work, so they were refused. The veil of friendship quickly turned to hostility; the enemies discouraged the people, made them afraid, and even used legal means to stop the work for years. But God sent two prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, to stir the people's hearts again; the work resumed, the decree of Darius confirmed it, and at last the temple was finished and the people kept the Passover with joy. The pattern is unmistakable: God's work meets opposition, but God's word, through His prophets, revives His people to finish what He began.
We should not pass quickly over those mixed voices at the foundation. The same event drew shouts of joy from some and tears from others, and both were sincere. Restoration often feels exactly like that. When God begins to rebuild a broken life, there is real joy at the fresh beginning, and yet there can be honest grief over the wasted years and the ruined glory that sin destroyed. Both belong. We may weep over what was lost even as we rejoice over what God is now doing, and the Lord receives both the shout and the tear as worship from a heart coming home.
III. Kazi ya Kuhani: Kurejesha NenoIII. The Priest's Work: Restoring the Word
The second man is Ezra himself, and he appears more than sixty years later, in chapters seven through ten. If Zerubbabel was of the kingly line and came to rebuild, Ezra was of the priestly line, descended from Aaron, and the work of a priest is to cleanse. He came to restore not stones but souls — to bring the people back to the Word of God.
Je, hungependa isemwe juu yako, "mfalme akampa yote aliyoyaomba"? Would you not like to have it said of you, "the king granted him all that he asked"? What kind of man is this, that a pagan emperor holds him in such regard? The secret is given in the next verses, in the great epigraph of his life: Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach His statutes in Israel. Notice the order — study, do, teach. He did not merely prepare his arguments or sharpen his intellect; he prepared his heart. He first learned the Word, then obeyed the Word, and only then taught the Word, and because he lived it before he preached it, his teaching had power. That is what the Word of God does in a life given to it: it strengthens and beautifies the place of our fellowship with God, the way a restored temple is made glorious again.
It is worth weighing how rare such a man is. Many know the Scriptures well enough to argue about them, yet have never let the Word govern their conduct. Ezra closed that gap. The book he opened was not first a book to debate but a book to obey, and only a man who has bowed to the Word himself can teach it with authority to others. This is the order God still honors in those who would handle His Word. Learn it on your knees, live it in your home and your work, and then your teaching will carry a weight that mere cleverness can never give.
IV. Urejesho Maana Yake ni TobaIV. Restoration Means Repentance
When Ezra arrived in Jerusalem, he found a heartbreaking condition. The people, the priests, even the leaders had intermarried with the surrounding pagan nations, mixing the holy people of God with the idolatry of the land. It was the very sin that had broken the nation before the exile — and after seventy years of discipline, they had drifted right back into it. The flesh never changes; no matter how long we have walked with God, we are never beyond the reach of our old sins if we leave off depending on Him. Ezra's reaction was not a shrug but anguish.
Ezra tore his clothes, sat appalled, and then poured out a prayer of confession, identifying himself with his people's guilt. And God moved in their hearts. The leaders came in broken-hearted contrition; a proclamation went out; and the people assembled — thousands of them, standing in the pouring rain in front of the temple — to confess their guilt and to put away the compromise they had embraced outside the will of God. It was radical, costly repentance. Real restoration is never cheap; it means naming the sin honestly, turning from it decisively, and making a clean break with whatever has pulled us away from God. The Lord Jesus taught the same severity: if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. Be ruthless with the thing that is destroying you.
One sobering truth runs beneath this whole scene. These were God's own people, freshly returned from the discipline of exile, and still they drifted back into the very sin that had ruined them. It is a warning to every believer that no amount of past blessing makes us safe in the present. The flesh does not improve with age; the moment we stop leaning on the Spirit of God, we are capable of returning to the worst we ever were. That is why the work of restoration is never finished in a single ceremony. It is a daily returning, a daily dependence, a daily keeping of the heart near to God.
V. Urejesho Mkuu Zaidi katika KristoV. The Greater Restoration in Christ
Stand back now and see the whole picture, for the book of Ezra is a portrait of how God restores a fallen heart, and it points beyond itself to Christ. First, the temple. Under the new covenant, God no longer dwells in a building of stone. There were no church buildings at all for the first centuries; the early believers met in homes, because the church has never been a building — it is the people of God when they gather.
You yourself, believer, are now the temple where God's Spirit lives; and Jesus told the woman at the well that true worshipers worship not on this mountain or that, but in spirit and in truth, for the temple is no longer a place but a Presence. And see how the two men of Ezra meet in one Person. Christ is our King of David's line, who rebuilds what sin tore down; and Christ is our great High Priest, who cleanses what sin defiled. He does both works of restoration that Zerubbabel and Ezra only pictured. Remember, too, that no one fallen into sin ever comes back unless God first brings him back; the same grace that stirred Cyrus and stirred the exiles is the grace that stirs the heart of every prodigal, making us restless with the husks of the far country until we rise and go home to the Father. So hear the message of Ezra. If you have fallen, God has already taken the first step toward you. Come back to the altar; let His Word search and restore you; make a clean break with the sin; and be restored. For our God is the God of the fresh new start, and in Christ the ruined temple of the human heart is raised up and made glorious again.
