It is one of the most beautiful love stories in the Bible, and one of its most quietly profound pictures of the gospel. An aging father sends his most trusted servant on a long journey to find a bride for his beloved son. At a well in a far country the servant prays, and God answers — and a young woman named Rebekah, by a single act of kindness and a single word of faith, becomes the chosen bride. Her story runs from a well to a wedding, and from a wedding to the cradle of two nations. Along the way Rebekah shows us a faith bold enough to leave everything behind, and, sadly, a heart still capable of scheming — reminding us that God accomplishes His purposes through people who are both believing and flawed, just like us.
Somo: Rebeka — bibi arusi aliyesema "Nitakwenda."Subject: Rebekah — the bride who said "I will go."
Proposition: Sought by a servant at a well, Rebekah answered with a faith-filled "I will go," was brought home to a bridegroom who loved her, and became the mother of two nations — and though her later scheming marred the story, God's promise stood, in a picture that points us to Christ, the Bridegroom who sought and won His bride.
Tutafuatilia hatua tano katika maisha ya Rebeka. We will trace five movements in the life of Rebekah.
I. Bibi Arusi Aliyetafutwa KisimaniI. The Bride Sought at the Well
It is worth noticing how seriously Abraham took this matter of his son's marriage. He did not leave it to chance or to Isaac's passing fancy; he saw that the bride would shape the whole future of the covenant family, and so he gave his most careful thought and his most trusted servant to the task. There is wisdom here for every generation. The choice of a life's partner is among the weightiest decisions a person ever makes, and it deserves prayer, counsel, and care rather than mere impulse. Abraham wanted for his son a wife who shared his faith, not one who would draw his heart away to other gods. That concern still matters, for marriage either strengthens or strains a person's walk with God.
Ibrahimu, akiwa sasa mzee, hakukubali mwanawe Isaka aoe kati ya Wakanaani walioabudu sanamu. Basi akamtuma mtumishi wake mwaminifu arudi kwa watu wake mwenyewe ili kumtafutia bibi arusi. Alipofika kisimani jioni, mtumishi huyo alifanya jambo la hekima kuliko yote ambalo mtu aliye katika kazi ngumu anaweza kufanya: aliomba.Abraham, now old, would not let his son Isaac marry among the idol-worshiping Canaanites. So he sent his trusted servant back to his own people to find a bride. Arriving at a well in the evening, the servant did the wisest thing a man on a hard errand can do: he prayed.
He asked God for a clear sign — that the right woman would not only give him a drink but offer to water his ten thirsty camels, a backbreaking task that would reveal a generous and willing heart. Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came to the well, drew water, and said the very words: "Drink, and I will draw for your camels also." God had answered before the prayer was done. Notice that Rebekah was chosen not for her beauty alone, but for her servant heart. She was found doing humble, generous work — and that is where God's eye so often falls. The Lord is still drawn to the willing hand and the kind spirit, and He often shapes a great future out of someone faithfully doing a small and thankless task.
The servant's prayer at the well repays a closer look, because it models how a believer can seek God's guidance in an honest decision. He did not demand a miracle for its own sake; he asked for a sign that would reveal character — a woman kind enough to water a stranger's camels would be a woman fit to marry into a household of faith. He tied his request to the kind of person God would be pleased to choose. And then he watched, ready to act the moment God answered. That is a healthy pattern: to pray specifically, to look for the wisdom God provides, and to move when the way is clear. God is not reluctant to guide those who genuinely seek to do His will and are willing to follow when He shows them the way.
II. "Nitakwenda" — Uamuzi wa ImaniII. "I Will Go" — the Decision of Faith
Utakwenda na mtu huyu?"The servant told the whole story, and the family agreed that this was clearly the Lord's doing. But when they wanted to keep Rebekah home a while longer, the matter was put to her directly: "Will you go with this man?"
Her answer is one of the great short sentences of Scripture: "I will go." Think of what it cost her. She was leaving her home, her family, and everything familiar, to travel to a distant land and marry a man she had never laid eyes on, on the strength of a servant's testimony about him. That is faith — to commit your whole life to one you have not seen, because you trust the word that has come to you. Every believer is called to make Rebekah's decision: to hear the testimony of Christ, whom we have not seen, and to say with our whole heart, "I will go." Faith is not the absence of the unknown; it is the willingness to step into it on the strength of a trustworthy word.
We should sit for a moment with the courage of Rebekah's answer. She had no photograph of Isaac, no letters from him, no chance to weigh him for herself; she had only the servant's account of a faithful family and a God who had led him to her door. To say "I will go" was to stake her entire future on the trustworthiness of that testimony. This is exactly the venture of faith that the gospel asks of us. We have not seen Christ with our eyes, but we have the testimony of those He sent, and the witness of His Spirit in the word. Faith does not wait until every question is answered; it acts on a reliable word, and in the acting it finds that the word was true.
III. Bibi Arusi Aletwa kwa Bwana ArusiIII. The Bride Brought to the Bridegroom
Safari ndefu ilipokaribia mwisho, Isaka alikuwa ametoka kwenda shambani jioni, akitafakari. Rebeka aliinua macho, akamwona, na kwa adabu akajifunika shela; mtumishi akamweleza Isaka mambo yote aliyoyafanya. As the long journey ended, Isaac was out in the field at evening, meditating. Rebekah looked up, saw him, and modestly veiled herself; the servant told Isaac all he had done.
Bibi arusi aliyetafutwa, aliyeitwa, na aliyekuwa tayari hatimaye aliletwa nyumbani kwa bwana arusi aliyempenda. Haiwezekani kuikosa picha iliyo hapa. The bride who was sought, called, and willing was at last brought home to the bridegroom who loved her. It is impossible to miss the picture here. A father sends his servant to seek a bride for his beloved son; the servant comes bearing gifts and testimony; the bride believes, says "I will go," leaves her old home, and is brought to the son who loves her. So the Father sends the Holy Spirit into the world to seek a bride for His Son; the Spirit comes bearing gifts and the testimony of Christ; and all who believe and come are brought home at last to the Bridegroom who loved them and gave Himself for them. Rebekah's wedding is a window into the love of God — the whole drama of redemption played out in a single family by a desert well.
Before we leave this wedding, let us linger on the gifts the servant brought. He came not empty-handed but laden with treasures from the father's house, tokens of the bridegroom's wealth and pledges of the home awaiting the bride. So it is with the Spirit who seeks us for Christ: He comes bearing gifts, the first installment of an inheritance kept in heaven, assuring our hearts that the One who calls us is rich beyond measure and that the home prepared for us is real. The Christian life even now is sweetened by such pledges of what is to come. We travel toward a Bridegroom we have not yet seen, but we travel with His gifts in hand, and they steady us for the road.
IV. Nyumba ya Maombi na Mataifa MawiliIV. The Praying Household and Two Nations
For twenty years Rebekah, like Sarah before her, was barren. Isaac pleaded with the Lord on her behalf, and God granted the prayer. But the pregnancy was troubled — the children struggled within her — and when she asked the Lord why, He answered her.
Here God revealed His sovereign choice of the line through which His promise would run — not because Jacob had earned it, but according to His own purpose. Yet human choices were just as real. The twins were opposites: Esau, the rugged hunter, a man of the appetite; and Jacob, the quieter man who valued the things of God. And in a single careless moment, Esau sold his birthright — his sacred place in the covenant family — for a single bowl of stew, because he despised it. Esau lost his blessing not by fate but by valuing a full stomach over the promise of God. The lesson stands for us all: do not trade what is eternal for what is momentary. A passing appetite, satisfied in a careless hour, has robbed many a soul of treasures it can never get back.
The struggle of the twins is a picture of a conflict that runs through every human heart. Esau represents the pull of the flesh — the man who lives for the appetite of the moment and counts the things of God cheap; Jacob, for all his faults, represents the one who reaches, however imperfectly, for the blessing and the birthright. Scripture later holds up Esau as a warning to us, a profane man who for one meal sold what could never be bought back. The danger is not far from any of us. There are seasons when the immediate craving feels so urgent that the eternal seems unreal, and in such a moment a person can barter away what matters most. To value the promise of God above the appetite of the hour is the daily wisdom this story presses upon us.
V. Hila, na Mungu Anayetimiza Ahadi YakeV. The Scheme, and the God Who Keeps His Promise
Sadly, the story does not end on its high note. Years later, when blind old Isaac prepared to give the family blessing to Esau, Rebekah overheard and devised a scheme. She dressed her favorite son Jacob in Esau's clothes and covered his arms with goatskins, and sent him in with a savory meal to deceive his father and steal the blessing. The deception "worked" — but at a terrible price. Esau's fury forced Jacob to flee for his life, and Rebekah, who had loved him most, would die without ever seeing her son again. Here is the sad irony: God had already promised that the older would serve the younger. Rebekah did not need to lie to secure what God had pledged to give; her scheming only brought heartbreak to her home. It is a sobering reminder that we cannot accomplish God's purposes by ungodly means, and that even people of real faith can fall into manipulation when they stop trusting God to keep His own word.
And yet — this is the wonder of grace — God's promise did not fail. Through Jacob, with all his faults, came the twelve tribes of Israel, and in time the Messiah Himself. God wove His perfect purpose through a flawed family, not because they earned it, but because He is faithful even when we are not; He cannot deny Himself. That is the hope of every believer who has stumbled. Our failures are real, and they carry consequences, but they do not cancel the promises of a faithful God. So Rebekah's life leaves us with two pictures held together: a bride who once said "I will go," a beautiful image of the faith that follows Christ; and a woman who later schemed, a sober warning against trying to help God by sinning. Hear both. Say to the unseen Bridegroom, with all your heart, "I will go" — and then trust Him enough to keep His promises His way, in His time, without your scheming. For the Father is still seeking a bride for His Son, and all who will come are brought home at last to the One who loves them.
