Tucked into the opening of First Samuel, at one of the lowest points in Israel's history, stands one of the most beautiful women of faith in all the Bible. Hannah is not a queen or a warrior; she is a heartbroken wife who could not have a child. Yet out of her tears and her prayers came a son who would change the nation, and from her lips came a song that the mother of our Lord would one day echo. Hannah teaches us how to pray when life is hard, how to surrender what we love most, and how to praise the God who lifts up the lowly and fills the empty. Hers is the story of a praying mother who gave her son back to God.

Somo: Hana — mama mwombaji aliyemrudisha mwanawe kwa Mungu.Subject: Hannah — the praying mother who gave her son back to God.

Proposition: In a hard place Hannah poured out her heart to God in humble, persistent, fervent prayer; God heard her, gave her a son, and she gave him back — and her praise overflowed, teaching us that God lifts up the lowly, and that the surrendered son of a praying mother became the prophet who anointed kings, in the line that leads to Christ.

Tutafuatilia hatua tano katika maisha ya Hana.We will trace five movements in the life of Hannah.

I. Mahali PagumuI. A Hard Place

Hannah's story begins in a dark time and a hard home. The nation of Israel had fallen far from God; in the days of the judges everyone did what was right in his own eyes, and even the house of God was corrupt, for the aged priest Eli had wicked sons who stole the offerings and defiled the worship. Into that spiritually barren age came a personally barren woman. Hannah's husband, Elkanah, had taken two wives — Hannah, whom he loved, and Peninnah, who had children.

(1 Samweli 1:6-7, SUV)And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable... So it was, year by year... that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat. (1 Samuel 1:6-7, NKJV)

Usipadharau mahali hapo. Huenda ndiyo ardhi yenyewe ambamo Mungu anakusudia kukufundisha kuomba kama Hana alivyoomba.Year after year Peninnah taunted and provoked Hannah over her childlessness, until Hannah wept and could not eat. Perhaps you know something of Hannah's hard place — a world that has drifted from God, a family that is far from ideal, a private grief that others cannot see. Do not despise that place. It may be the very soil in which God means to teach you to pray as Hannah prayed.

Inafaa kutulia kidogo tuone jinsi Mungu mara nyingi huanza kazi zake kuu kabisa mahali pasipotarajiwa kabisa. Utupu wenyewe unaouombolezea huenda ukawa nafasi anayokusudia kuijaza. It is worth pausing on how God so often begins His greatest works in the most unlikely places. The Bible has a striking pattern of barren women — Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Hannah, and later Elizabeth — to whom God gave sons of destiny. He seems to delight in starting where there is no human possibility, so that when the gift comes everyone knows it was His doing and not ours. Hannah's empty arms were not a sign that God had forgotten her; they were the place where He was preparing to show His power. If you are in a season of waiting and lack, do not assume God is absent. The very emptiness you grieve may be the room He intends to fill.

II. Maombi ya HanaII. Hannah's Prayer

Angalia jinsi alivyoomba. In her anguish Hannah went up to the house of the Lord and poured out her soul. Notice how she prayed.

(1 Samweli 1:15-16, SUV)No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit... but have poured out my soul before the LORD... for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now. (1 Samuel 1:15-16, NKJV)

She prayed humbly. She did not come demanding her rights; she called herself the Lord's maidservant and simply asked that He would remember her. She was the opposite of the proud man in Jesus' parable who stood and thanked God that he was not like other men, and went home unheard; Hannah came low, and God lifted her up. She prayed persistently. This was no first attempt; year by year she had come, and now in bitterness of soul she prayed and wept and would not give up until God answered. The Lord Himself taught us to pray like this — to keep knocking, like the man at his neighbor's door at midnight, until the door is opened. And she prayed fervently. Hannah was so caught up in pouring out her heart that only her lips moved and no sound came, and old Eli, watching, actually thought she was drunk. One wonders how many of us have ever been so lost in prayer that someone might mistake our earnestness for intoxication. Then Hannah made a vow: if God would give her a son, she would give him back to the Lord all the days of his life. Eli blessed her, and Hannah went away and ate, and her face was no longer sad. She had left her burden with God.

There is a quiet but important moment at the end of Hannah's praying that we must not miss. After she had poured out her soul and made her vow, the Scripture says she went her way, and ate, and her face was no longer sad — and all of this before there was any sign that her prayer would be answered. Nothing had changed in her circumstances; she was still childless when she rose from her knees. What had changed was that she had truly handed her burden over to God. That is the mark of real prayer: not that we always get an immediate answer, but that we are able to leave the matter with the Lord and walk away lighter. Hannah teaches us that we can cast our care on Him and rise in peace, trusting Him with the outcome.

III. Nadhiri Iliyotimizwa na Upendo wa MamaIII. The Vow Kept and a Mother's Love

And God remembered Hannah. In time she conceived and bore a son, and she named him Samuel, for she had asked him of the Lord. But Hannah did not forget her vow. Many of us, having made such a promise in a desperate hour, would quietly take it back — we would tell ourselves we were under stress and did not really mean it. Hannah kept her word.

Nalimwomba mtoto huyu; na BWANA amenipa dua yangu niliyomwomba; kwa sababu hiyo mimi nami nimempa BWANA; wakati wote atakaokuwa hai amepewa BWANA. (1 Samweli 1:27-28, SUV)For this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. Therefore I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the LORD. (1 Samuel 1:27-28, NKJV)

When the boy was weaned, she brought him to Eli at the house of the Lord, with a sacrifice, and gave him back: "For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted my petition; therefore I have lent him to the Lord as long as he lives." Think of what that cost her — the very thing she had wept and prayed for through all those bitter years, she now placed into the hands of God and left at the tabernacle. Yet giving him up did not mean she stopped loving him. Every year, when the family went up to worship, Hannah brought Samuel a little coat that she had sewn with her own hands, and we may be sure she put love into every stitch; as he grew, each year she made him a larger one. Is that not just like a mother? She had surrendered her son to God, but her love followed him all his days. This is faith come full circle — to ask God for a gift, to receive it with joy, to give it back open-handed, and to go on loving in the giving.

Consider also what Hannah's faithfulness meant for the nation. Because one mother kept her word and gave her son to God, Israel received Samuel, the prophet who would call the whole people back to the Lord and anoint its first kings. We never know what God intends to do through the children we dedicate to Him. Hannah could not have seen the centuries of history that hung upon her quiet obedience at the tabernacle door. Parents today carry the same unseen significance: when we give our children to the Lord, pray over them, and raise them for His purposes, we may be placing into His hands a life He will use far beyond anything we could imagine. Faithfulness in the small, hidden duties of the home echoes down through generations.

IV. Sifa ZinazofurikaIV. Praise That Overflows

And here is the wonder: it was after Hannah gave her son away that she sang. Her great song in First Samuel 2 is not the giddy relief of a prayer just answered; it rises in the aftermath of surrender.

Moyo wangu wamshangilia BWANA... (1 Samweli 2:1-2, SUV)My heart rejoices in the LORD... There is none holy like the LORD, for there is none besides You, nor is there any rock like our God. (1 Samuel 2:1-2, NKJV)

My heart rejoices in the Lord," she begins, and then she sings of the God who turns the world upside down: "The bows of the mighty men are broken, and those who stumbled are girded with strength... The Lord makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the beggar from the ash heap, to set them among princes." This is the heart of Hannah's faith and the lesson of her life: God exalts the lowly and casts down the proud; He fills the empty and humbles the full. So let me ask you what Hannah's life asks us all: does your praise overflow from the good you have had to let go? Anyone can thank God for what they receive; Hannah teaches a deeper thanksgiving — the praise that is born when we surrender to Him the thing we love most. Centuries later a young virgin named Mary would stand and sing almost the same song — "He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly" — for the God of Hannah is the God of the Magnificat, and He had not changed.

It is striking that Hannah's song hardly mentions her baby at all. We might have expected a new mother's lullaby, full of the child she had longed for; instead she sings almost entirely about God — His holiness, His power, His justice, His care for the weak. Her answered prayer had lifted her eyes off the gift and onto the Giver. This is the true direction of praise. Lesser thanksgiving stops at the blessing; mature thanksgiving runs past the blessing to the God who gave it. Hannah received a son and worshiped the Lord; she let the good thing point her to the best thing. May our own answered prayers do the same in us, turning every gift into a window through which we see and adore the God behind it.

V. Kutoka kwa Mwana Aliyesalimishwa hadi kwa Mfalme wa WafalmeV. From a Surrendered Son to the King of Kings

The child Hannah gave back to God became Samuel, the last of the judges and the first of the prophets — the very bridge from the chaos of the judges to the kingdom of Israel. While he was still a boy ministering before Eli, the Lord called him by name in the night, and the child answered, "Speak, for Your servant hears."

(1 Samweli 2:9-10, SUV)He will guard the feet of His saints... The LORD will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to His king, and exalt the horn of His anointed. (1 Samuel 2:9-10, NKJV)

It was this same Samuel who would one day anoint Saul, and then David, the shepherd-king after God's own heart, from whose line the Messiah Himself would come. Do you see it? Hannah's surrendered son stands at the hinge of the whole story. The thread runs straight from a weeping woman's prayer to the throne of David and on to David's greater Son, Jesus Christ, the King of kings. And the God of Hannah's song is the God of the gospel — the God who lifts the lowly, fills the empty, and exalts the humble; who receives everyone who comes to Him empty-handed and low; who gave His own Son so that we might be lifted from the dust and set among princes. Hannah came to God with nothing but her tears and went away with a song. So may we. Pray in the hard place, as Hannah prayed — humbly, persistently, fervently. Surrender to God the very thing you love most, as Hannah gave back her son, and go on loving in the giving. And let your praise overflow, not only for what He gives, but for the joy of belonging to the God who lifts up the lowly and fills the empty with good things. For the same Lord who heard a barren woman's prayer hears yours, and the King who came at last from her son's anointing reigns forever.
