UraibuAddiction
Uraibu ni utumwa — na Kristo alikuja kuwaweka mateka huru."Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin" (John 8:34). "I will not be mastered by anything" (1 Corinthians 6:12). Addiction is bondage — and Christ came to set captives free.
Hali YenyeweThe Situation
The pastor is approached — often not by the addict but by a desperate spouse or parent — about a person enslaved to alcohol, to drugs, to pornography, to gambling, or to some other compulsion that has taken over their life. Or the addict comes himself, usually only after the bottom has fallen out: a lost job, a wrecked marriage, an arrest, a health scare. The pastor must understand addiction with both halves of the truth held together. On one hand, it is genuine bondage: what may have begun as a free choice has become a slavery the person can no longer simply will their way out of, with the body and brain themselves now in its grip. Scripture knows this bondage well — "everyone who sins is a slave to sin," and Paul's anguished cry, "the very thing I hate, I do" (Romans 7). To bark "just stop" at an addict is as useless as telling a drowning man to simply swim. On the other hand, addiction is not merely a disease that happens to someone and removes all responsibility; there remain real choices, real accountability, and the need for repentance. The wise pastor refuses both errors — the cheap moralism that ignores the bondage, and the false comfort that denies all responsibility — and holds out the gospel's stranger and better word: you are more enslaved than you admit, and more able to be freed than you dare hope, because Another has come to break the chains.
Mkumbuke mwana mpotevu. Baba hakusubiri mlangoni amekunja mikono; alikimbia. Chini kabisa si mwisho wa hadithi. Mara nyingi sana, ndipo "kuzingatia moyoni" kunapoanzia, na ndipo Baba tayari anakimbia kumlaki yule anayegeuka kurudi nyumbani.Recall the prodigal son. He demanded his inheritance early — in effect wishing his father dead — and went to a far country, where he squandered everything on what Jesus calls "riotous living." We are not told he set out to destroy himself; no one does. But the far country always charges more than it promised, and soon a famine came, and the boy who had wanted only freedom found himself a slave — feeding pigs, a horror to a Jewish son, so hungry he longed to eat the pods he was feeding them, and no one gave him anything. This is the trajectory of every addiction: it promises freedom and delivers slavery; it asks for a little and takes everything. And then comes the turning point, three of the most hopeful words in Scripture: "he came to himself." In the pigpen, at the bottom, he finally saw clearly — who he was, where he belonged, what he had become. He rehearsed his confession and turned toward home. And here is the part for every weary spouse and parent who has waited up nights: "while he was still a long way off, his father saw him" — saw him, meaning the father had been watching the road — "and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him." The father did not wait at the door with arms folded; he ran. The bottom is not the end of the story. It is, very often, where "coming to oneself" begins, and where the Father is already running to meet the one turning home.
Withdrawal from alcohol and some drugs can be physically dangerous and even fatal, and must never be attempted without medical supervision. The pastor's role here is not to manage detox but to insist on and help arrange proper medical care. Addiction also frequently brings danger to the family — financial ruin, neglect, and sometimes violence; where anyone is being harmed or endangered, protecting them and involving the proper help comes first. As always, the standing safeguard about not counseling the opposite gender alone behind closed doors applies.
Hatua Kumi, Zikitumika kwa UraibuThe Ten Steps, Applied to Addiction
Hatua ya Kwanza · Awamu ya 1Step One · Stage 1
Amua Wakati na MahaliDetermine the Time and the Place
The counselor seeks a private, sober setting — and timing is critical, for there is no use trying to counsel someone who is currently intoxicated or high; that conversation must wait until they are clear. He should also be aware that the addict has usually become a skilled deceiver, and that the family around them may have arranged their whole lives to manage the addiction. Sometimes the right "time and place" is a planned, loving intervention with the family present, but that is delicate work best done with experienced help. The basic posture is a door held open: the addict often expects condemnation, and a setting that is calm, private, and without ambush can let them stay long enough to be reached.
Hatua ya Pili · Awamu ya 1Step Two · Stage 1
Sikiliza — Kupitia UkanajiListen — Through the Denial
The counselor listens carefully, knowing that the defining feature of addiction is denial. The addict minimizes ("I can stop anytime"), blames ("anyone would drink with a wife like mine"), and conceals the true extent. The counselor does not call the person a liar, but neither is he taken in; he listens for the gap between the story and the wreckage around it. He listens, too, for the pain underneath — addictions almost always grow over a wound the substance was first used to numb: grief, abuse, shame, emptiness, unbearable stress. Reaching that wound matters, because an addiction is rarely surrendered until the ache it was medicating is brought into the light and met with something better. Patient, non-accusing listening is what eventually lets a person lower the defenses long enough to tell the truth.
Hatua ya Tatu · Awamu ya 1Step Three · Stage 1
Fafanua Hali — Kuvunja UkanajiClarify the Situation — Breaking Denial
Clarifying, in addiction, means helping the person come to honest reality — which is the prodigal's "coming to himself." This cannot be forced, but it can be helped: gently and without attacking, the counselor holds up the mirror of the actual consequences — the relationships damaged, the promises broken, the money gone, the lies told, the body harmed. Not to shame, but because the lie of addiction is "this is under control," and freedom begins only when that lie is abandoned. The counselor names plainly, with compassion, what the person may have spent years not letting themselves see. He also helps clarify what they are actually dealing with — how deep, how long, what substance or behavior, what physical hold — so that the path forward fits the real situation and not a minimized version of it.
The counselor learns the history of the struggle. Has the person tried to quit before, and what happened? Have there been treatment programs, support groups, other counselors — and what helped, even briefly? Relapse is common in addiction, and a history of failed attempts is not proof that recovery is impossible; it is information. Most importantly, this is where the pastor clearly recognizes the limits of his role. Addiction almost always requires more than a pastor alone can give: medical care for safe withdrawal, often a specialized treatment program, and the ongoing support of a recovery community. The faithful pastor does not try to be the addict's entire solution; he becomes one strong part of a team, connecting the person to professional and medical help while remaining the steady spiritual shepherd alongside it. To attempt to handle severe addiction solo is to set both pastor and addict up to fail.
Hatua ya Tano · Awamu ya 2Step Five · Stage 2
Wajibu — Kumiliki Kile Kilicho Changu KumilikiResponsibility — Owning What Is Mine to Own
Here both halves of the truth meet. The addict cannot take responsibility for the bondage by sheer willpower — that is precisely what addiction has stolen. Yet there is a responsibility that is the very turning point of recovery, and it has a paradoxical shape: it begins with admitting powerlessness. Like the prodigal coming to himself, the addict must stop saying "I've got this" and confess the truth — "I cannot do this on my own; I need help; I need God." This honest surrender is not the end of responsibility but its beginning, for from it flow the responsible actions only the person can take: to enter treatment, to attend the meetings, to remove the bottle from the house, to make the call, to tell the truth to those they have deceived, to take the next sober step today. The counselor neither lets the person hide behind "it's a disease, I can't help it," nor crushes them with "just stop." He leads them to the one responsible act that opens the door — surrender — and then to the daily responsible steps that walk through it.
The counselor models the grace that does not excuse and the firmness that does not condemn. He shows what it looks like to love someone without enabling them — to keep the door open while refusing to be lied to, to offer real help while declining to prop up the addiction. This is the hardest balance, and the addict has rarely seen it: most people in their life have either condemned them or covered for them. The pastor models a third way: the father in the parable, who let the son go and feel the famine, who did not chase him into the far country with rescue after rescue, but who watched the road and ran the moment the son turned home. He embodies hope rooted not in the addict's track record but in the God who frees captives — which is exactly the steady, non-anxious, non-enabling presence the recovering person needs to lean on.
Hatua ya Saba · Awamu ya 2Step Seven · Stage 2
Pitia Njia MbadalaReview the Alternatives
The counselor lays out the real avenues of help, because addiction's lie is that there is no way out. There is the medical avenue: safe, supervised withdrawal and any treatment for the body's dependence — non-negotiable where the substance makes withdrawal dangerous. There is the treatment avenue: programs, whether residential or outpatient, designed for exactly this. There is the community avenue: recovery groups and accountability, for almost no one beats an addiction alone — the steady support of others walking the same road is one of the most powerful helps there is. There is the behavioral avenue: identifying and avoiding the triggers, removing the access, restructuring a daily life so the old cues are broken and replaced. And there is the spiritual avenue, the deepest: surrender to God, confession, the means of grace, and the new identity and power found in Christ. The point of naming these together is to show that recovery, though hard, has well-worn paths, and the person need not invent the way alone.
Hatua ya Nane · Awamu ya 2Step Eight · Stage 2
Chunguza MatokeoExplore the Outcomes
The counselor walks both roads to their ends, honestly. The road of continued addiction has a well-documented destination, and love does not hide it: it almost always grows worse, not better, costing health, relationships, freedom, and not rarely life itself, while the far country keeps charging more. The road of recovery is hard and rarely a straight line — relapse is common, and the counselor prepares the person for it so that a slip does not become a reason to abandon the whole journey. But it leads somewhere real: sobriety, restored relationships, self-respect, and a freedom the addiction always promised and never gave. He holds out genuine hope grounded in the truth that people do recover, that the Father runs to meet those who turn home, and that the bottom is often where the climb begins — without ever minimizing how hard the climb will be.
Hatua ya Tisa · Awamu ya 2Step Nine · Stage 2
Toa Taarifa — Uhuru ndani ya KristoSupply Information — Freedom in Christ
When the person is ready, the counselor brings the gospel's word to the addict's deepest need. The bondage is real, but so is the Liberator: "if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). Paul's cry of helpless slavery in Romans 7 — "wretched man that I am, who will deliver me?" — is answered in the very next breath: "Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord," and then, "there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). The gospel meets the addict at exactly the two points addiction attacks: it answers the crushing shame with no-condemnation grace, and it answers the helpless bondage with a power not the person's own — the Spirit who breaks sin's dominion. The counselor also brings the truth that freedom is not just from something but for something: a new identity, a new family in the church, a new purpose that fills the emptiness the substance was hired to fill. He does not pretend grace removes the hard work of recovery; he proclaims that the hard work is now done in the strength of One who has already broken the chains.
Hatua ya Kumi · Awamu ya 2Step Ten · Stage 2
Toa HitimishoProvide Closure
Recovery from addiction is a long road — often described as one day at a time, for life — so closure is never a single decision but a sustained, patient walking-alongside. The counselor leaves the person with a concrete plan owned by them: the medical appointment, the treatment program, the first meeting, the trigger removed, the accountability partner, the next sober day. He stays connected for the long haul, knowing that the dangerous moments come not only at the start but later, when the crisis has faded and vigilance relaxes. He prepares for relapse without expecting it, so that a fall is met with help back up rather than abandonment. He keeps the person tethered to the recovery community and the church, because isolation is the addiction's ally. And he remains, like the watching father, a steady presence who refuses to give up — pointing again and again past the substance to the Christ who alone makes captives free, and who is not finished with this person yet.
The Twelve-Step movement (Alcoholics Anonymous and its many descendants) is the most widely used approach to addiction in the world, and a pastor will meet it constantly. Its early steps are strikingly close to the gospel: admitting one is powerless and life has become unmanageable; coming to believe a Power greater than ourselves can restore us; making a searching and fearless moral inventory; admitting our wrongs; making amends to those we have harmed. Honest confession, surrender, restitution, dependence on God, and a community of fellow strugglers — these are deeply biblical instincts, and the steps have helped millions find sobriety. The behavioral view adds a complementary insight: that an addiction operates as a habit loop — a cue (a feeling, a time of day, a place, a person) triggers a routine (the substance or behavior) that delivers a reward (relief, escape, pleasure), and repetition carves the loop ever deeper. Recovery, on this view, means learning one's cues, avoiding or changing them, and replacing the old routine with a new one that meets the real need — practical wisdom that fits hand-in-glove with Step Seven's avenues.
Tiba ni Mtu.The biblical caution. The pastor uses both gladly, but sees where each falls short of the gospel. The Twelve Steps deliberately speak of a "higher power" as each person understands it — "God as we understood Him" — and this vagueness, which lets the program serve everyone, is also its theological limit: a generic higher power, or a doorknob, or "the group" is not the living God who has revealed Himself in Jesus Christ, and cannot finally save. The fellowship of a recovery group is a real grace, but it is not the church, and sobriety is not the same as salvation; a person can be dry and still lost. So the pastor honors what the Steps get right — and points beyond the unnamed higher power to the named Savior, beyond sobriety to new life in Christ. The behavioral habit-loop, for its part, is true and useful as far as it goes, but it describes the mechanism of bondage without reaching its heart: addiction is finally not only a habit but a worship disorder, an attempt to fill with a created thing the place meant for God. Managing the loop can interrupt the behavior; only Christ can fill the emptiness that drove it. The tools serve the cure; they are not the cure. The cure is a Person.
