Hata hivyo, hata watu waaminifu huogopa — na tiba ya hofu mara chache huwa rahisi kama amri tu."Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer... let your requests be made known to God" (Philippians 4:6). Yet even faithful people are afraid — and the cure is rarely as simple as a command.

Hali YenyeweThe Situation

A member confesses, almost ashamed, that they are afraid all the time — that worry runs in their mind like a wheel that will not stop, that their chest tightens and their heart races for no reason they can name, that they have begun avoiding the things that frighten them until their world is growing smaller. This is anxiety, and the pastor must understand it as carefully as he does depression. Some fear is normal and even good — it warns us of real danger. But anxiety is fear that has slipped its mooring from real threat: worry about what may never happen, dread without a clear cause, sometimes the sudden terror of a panic attack that feels like dying though the body is unharmed. As with depression, the pastor must not treat this as simple faithlessness. Yes, Scripture says "do not be anxious" and "fear not" — but it says so as a loving invitation and promise, not as a club to beat the fearful. A trembling person flogged with "you just need more faith" only adds shame to fear. And anxiety, too, can have deep physical and chemical roots; a racing heart and a flood of dread can rise from the body itself. The pastor comes, then, not to scold the fear away but to help carry it toward the One who says, again and again, "Fear not, for I am with you."

Picture the boat. It is night on the Sea of Galilee, and a storm has come down with the suddenness those waters are known for. The waves are breaking over the boat — not splashing it, filling it — and these are not landsmen but fishermen, men who know this lake, and they are terrified. Water is rising around their knees. And Jesus is asleep. They wake Him with the rawest prayer in all the Gospels: "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" He rises, speaks three words to the wind and the sea — "Peace! Be still!" — and the text says there was a great calm, the wind gone as if it had never blown. Then He turns to them and asks the question that hangs over every anxious heart: "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?" Notice He does not ask it before He stills the storm, while they are drowning, but after, when they are safe. And notice the disciples are left not merely calmed but full of awe and wonder — "Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?" That wonder is the beginning of the cure for fear: not that the storms never come, but that the One in the boat with us is Lord even of the wind.

Hatua Kumi, Zikitumika kwa WasiwasiThe Ten Steps, Applied to Anxiety

Hatua ya Kwanza · Awamu ya 1Step One · Stage 1

Amua Muda na MahaliDetermine the Time and the Place

An anxious person is calmed or unsettled by their surroundings more than most, so the counselor chooses a place that feels safe, quiet, and unhurried, with no sense of being trapped or rushed. He keeps his own manner slow and steady, for anxiety is contagious and so is calm. Honoring the standing safeguard, he meets in a way that is open and above reproach. The very atmosphere of the meeting — unpressured, patient, secure — begins to preach before a word is said: here, for this hour, you are safe.

Hatua ya Pili · Awamu ya 1Step Two · Stage 1

SikilizaListen

The counselor listens without minimizing. Nothing shuts an anxious person down faster than "there's nothing to worry about" — to them the fear is utterly real, and being told it is silly only adds the shame of not being understood. So he listens to the whole shape of it: what they fear, when it started, how it shows in the body, what they have begun to avoid. He listens for the difference between worry he can reason with and the physical storm of panic that may need a doctor. And simply by taking the fear seriously and staying calm in its presence, he gives the anxious person a first taste of what they most need — to be met in the fear by someone who is not afraid of it.

Hatua ya Tatu · Awamu ya 1Step Three · Stage 1

Fafanua HaliClarify the Situation

Together they bring the fog of anxiety into focus, for fear shrinks when it is named. Vague dread is harder to fight than a named fear, so the counselor gently helps the person put words to it: Is there a specific fear — flying, illness, a person, a place — or a free-floating worry that attaches to anything? Is it constant, or does it come in sudden attacks? Is it tied to a real situation that genuinely needs addressing, or has it outgrown its cause? Often simply distinguishing what is a real and present danger (which calls for action) from what is a "what if" about a future that may never arrive (which calls for trust) brings the first relief. Naming the fear is the beginning of facing it.

Hatua ya Nne · Awamu ya 1Step Four · Stage 1

Chunguza Ushauri UliotanguliaInvestigate Previous Counseling

The counselor learns the history and the limits of his role. Has the person seen a doctor, since panic and severe anxiety can have physical causes and effective medical help exists? What have they already tried — and has avoidance, the most natural response, quietly made the fear worse? He watches for the signs that this is more than a pastor should carry alone: panic attacks that recur, anxiety so severe it stops the person from working or leaving home, fear bound up with past trauma, or any anxiety shadowed by thoughts of self-harm. In these the loving move is to bring in professional and medical help, not as a replacement for the pastor's care but alongside it. Knowing what has and has not helped keeps him from repeating what failed and shows him where his own competence ends.

Hatua ya Tano · Awamu ya 2Step Five · Stage 2

Uwajibikaji — Hatua Zilizo Ndani ya UwezoResponsibility — the Steps Within Reach

As with depression, this step is never "your fear is your fault." But there is a true and freeing responsibility the anxious person can take: the recognition that, while they cannot simply will the fear away, they can choose their next action in spite of it. Here is the heart of it — courage is not the absence of fear but doing the right thing while afraid. The counselor helps the person see the one pattern that always feeds anxiety: avoidance. Every time we flee the thing we fear, the fear grows stronger and our world grows smaller. So responsibility is reframed as the choice to stop feeding the fear by running, and instead to take the next small, do-able step toward what they have been avoiding — not recklessly, not all at once, but deliberately. They are not responsible for feeling afraid; they are invited to take responsibility for what they do next.

Hatua ya Sita · Awamu ya 2Step Six · Stage 2

Kuonyesha Mfano wa JukumuModel the Role

The counselor models the calm presence of one who is not ruled by fear. Like Jesus asleep in the stern while the storm raged, his settledness is not indifference but trust — and trust, witnessed up close, is steadying. He does not pretend fears never touch him; that would ring false and isolate the anxious person further. Instead he shows what it looks like to feel fear and not be commanded by it, to face a hard thing while trembling, to bring worry honestly to God rather than either denying it or drowning in it. By being a non-anxious presence, he lends the frightened person, for a while, a borrowed steadiness until they can find their own.

Hatua ya Saba · Awamu ya 2Step Seven · Stage 2

Pitia Njia MbadalaReview the Alternatives

The counselor lays out the real paths forward. There is the medical avenue, for anxiety that is rooted in the body — seeing a doctor, without shame. There is the bodily avenue: anxiety lives partly in the body, so slow breathing, rest, exercise, and cutting back on what stokes a racing heart are genuine helps, not trivial ones. There is the avenue of facing fear by degrees rather than fleeing it — approaching the feared thing in small, manageable steps so the fear can subside instead of being fed by escape. There is the relational avenue: anxiety isolates, and a few safe people who know and carry the burden lighten it. And there is the spiritual avenue, the deepest: the practice of bringing every anxious thought to God in prayer, of dwelling on what is true rather than on the dreaded "what if," of resting in promises rehearsed until they are familiar. The point of naming these together is to show the anxious person that they are not helpless and there is more than one door out.

Hatua ya Nane · Awamu ya 2Step Eight · Stage 2

Chunguza MatokeoExplore the Outcomes

Mshauri humsaidia mtu kuona kila njia inaelekea wapi. The counselor helps the person see where each road leads. The road of avoidance feels safer in the moment but always narrows the life: one feared thing avoided becomes two, then ten, until the world shrinks to a single room. The road of facing fear by degrees feels harder at first but always widens the life: each small fear faced and survived teaches the nervous system a truer lesson than any argument — I felt the fear, I went anyway, and I was not destroyed. He is honest that this is not instant and that fear will protest loudly the first times it is disobeyed. But he holds out the real and reachable hope that anxiety, faced with help, loosens its grip, and that a life need not keep getting smaller. The far country of a freer life is reached one faced fear at a time.

Hatua ya Tisa · Awamu ya 2Step Nine · Stage 2

Toa Taarifa — "Usiogope, Kwa Maana Mimi Ni Pamoja Nawe"Supply Information — "Fear Not, For I Am With You"

Now the counselor brings the deep well of Scripture on fear — and the Bible has much, for "fear not" is said to be its most repeated command. But notice how God says it. He almost never says merely "stop being afraid"; He says "fear not, for I am with you" (Isaiah 41:10). The cure is not a command to feel differently but a Presence to lean on. Philippians 4:6–7 does not stop at "do not be anxious"; it gives the path — prayer and thanksgiving — and the promise that the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard our hearts. Jesus reasons gently with worry in Matthew 6: look at the birds, the lilies; your Father feeds and clothes them, and you are worth more; do not be anxious about tomorrow. Peter says, "cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). And here the counselor lets a real wonder stand: he cannot promise the storms will not come, and he should not pretend to know why this person carries this fear. What he can hold out is the truth the disciples learned in the boat — that the cure for fear is finally not the absence of the storm but the presence of the Lord of the storm, asking, even of us, "Why are you afraid?"

Hatua ya Kumi · Awamu ya 2Step Ten · Stage 2

HitimishaProvide Closure

Anxiety rarely lifts in a single meeting, so closure is a plan and a continued walking-alongside. The counselor leaves the person with one or two concrete, do-able next steps — a small fear to face this week, a doctor's appointment to keep, a promise to memorize, an anxious habit to interrupt — rather than a vague resolve to "worry less." He arranges to follow up, both to encourage and to keep the person honest about the steps, since avoidance will quietly creep back. He celebrates each small fear faced. And where the anxiety needs professional or medical help, closure includes making sure that handoff actually happens, with the pastor remaining the steady, praying presence beside it. The message of closure is the message of the whole unit: you are not alone in the boat.

Lenzi ya Nadharia — Tiba ya Uhalisia (Reality Therapy) na Mbinu ya KitabiaTheory Lens — Reality Therapy & the Behavioral Approach

Reality Therapy (William Glasser) turns attention away from endlessly analyzing the past and toward present choices and behavior. Its questions are bracingly practical: What are you doing now? Is it working? What could you choose to do differently? It insists that, whatever our circumstances or feelings, we still have real choices, and it holds us responsible for those choices without excusing them by our history. For the anxious, this is genuinely useful: it cuts through the paralysis of "I can't help it" to the freeing truth that, while I cannot choose to feel unafraid, I can choose my next action. The Behavioral approach adds a second tool. Joseph Wolpe observed that fears learned by association can be unlearned the same way, through systematic desensitization — facing a feared thing gradually, in small steps, while staying relaxed, so the body slowly learns the dreaded thing is survivable. This is the clinical name for what Step Eight described: avoidance feeds fear, while graded, supported exposure loosens it. Both approaches carry real, usable wisdom for the fearful.

Mbinu hutumika; haiokoi. The biblical caution. Yet both fall short of the gospel, and the pastor must see where. Reality Therapy can speak as if the human will were enough — "just choose better" — but Scripture knows the will itself is weak, that "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak," and that we need not only resolve but the help of the Spirit and the renewing of the heart. And both approaches can quiet the symptom while leaving the soul's deeper need untouched, for the final cure for fear is not merely a calmer body or a better choice but a trust that rests in the character of God. The behavioral tools can teach the nervous system that a feared thing is survivable; only the gospel can teach the heart that, even if the worst should come, we are held by a Father who works all things for good and from whose love nothing can separate us. So the wise pastor gladly uses these tools — the practical question, the graded step, the relaxed body — but sets them inside the greater work: leading an anxious soul not just to manage fear but to rest in the One who is with us in the boat. The technique serves; it does not save.
