Siku ya 1 — Kuhubiri Mafundisho ni NiniDay 1 — What Doctrinal Preaching Is

The word doctrine simply means teaching. Doctrinal or theological preaching, then, is the preaching of what the Bible teaches — taking a basic Christian belief and expounding it so that the hearer comes to understand it and to accept it. But it does not stop at the mind. A doctrinal sermon takes that belief and applies it to life. It aims past the intellect at the heart and the will.

This is the first thing to settle, because doctrinal preaching is easily mistaken for a lecture. A lecture informs; a sermon proclaims. The goal is not that the congregation should know more about God, but that they should know God, trust Him, and obey Him. Doctrine is the fuel; worship and obedience are the fire.

"Bali wewe nena mambo yanayopatana na mafundisho yenye uzima." — Tito 2:1 (SUV)"But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine." — Titus 2:1 (NKJV)

So the theological message has two movements: it expounds a belief to gain understanding and acceptance, and it applies that belief to life. Hold both together and you have doctrinal preaching. Drop the first and you have mere exhortation; drop the second and you have a classroom.

Siku ya 2 — Kwa Nini Tunahubiri MafundishoDay 2 — Why We Preach Doctrine

There are three reasons to preach a theological sermon. First, to lay a foundation. The church is built on the kerygma, the core gospel message, and a congregation grounded in that message will stand when shallow teaching fails elsewhere. Second, to educate. God's people are to be built up in the faith, not left to live on milk. Third, to develop your own position. Preparing doctrinal sermons forces the preacher into real study, and he comes out with convictions he did not have before.

This is no novelty. The preaching of the New Testament was doctrinal. The apostles preached the kerygma, the cross, judgment, and the love of God; they preached boldly, in the power of the Spirit, and everywhere they went. Doctrinal preaching is not a departure from biblical preaching — it is a return to it.

— 1 Timotheo 4:13,16 (SUV)"Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine... Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine." — 1 Timothy 4:13,16 (NKJV)

Siku ya 3 — Je, Mahubiri ya Kimada ni ya Kibiblia?Day 3 — Is Topical Preaching Biblical?

Here is the objection every doctrinal preacher must answer. Sermons fall along a spectrum. In the textual sermon the divisions come from the text and the explanation from the preacher. In the expository sermon both the divisions and the explanation come from the text; it is the most closely tied to the passage. In the topical sermon the idea comes from the text, but the preacher arranges the points himself by deduction. The topical sermon is therefore analytically the least tied to the text — and that is why people suspect it is just the preacher's ideas with verses bolted on afterward.

The answer is simple and strict: to keep a topical sermon biblical, every point must rest on, and quote, its own verse of Scripture. When each point stands on a text, the sermon is the teaching of Scripture even though the preacher arranged it. Deduction moves from the general to the specific (topical); induction moves from the specific to the general (textual and expository). Either road is biblical, so long as the text governs the idea and not the reverse.

And the reverse must be said too. A preacher may take an expository or textual structure — divisions drawn straight from the text — and still develop them in a way that is not biblical at all, reading his own ideas into the words instead of drawing God's meaning out of them. So structure, by itself, neither makes a sermon biblical nor makes it less biblical. A biblical sermon is one whose content is truly derived from the Word of God.

This is why a doctrinal sermon commonly takes a topical or synthetic form — though it can also be strongly expository while still synthesizing doctrine, when a single passage sustains the weight of the point. The great Christian doctrines are not laid out complete in any single passage; Scripture reveals them a little here and a little there. So the preacher must go to several places, gather what each one says, and put the whole together — letting Scripture explain itself. There is always danger in building a theology on one or two verses; if those verses seem to contradict what the Bible teaches generally, it is our interpretation of them that must be corrected, not the rest of Scripture.

Two convictions guard this work. The first is sola scriptura — Scripture alone. If a thing is not in the Bible, we have no business preaching it as God's truth; and if it is in the Bible, we must handle it with great care. The second is the priesthood of all believers: God gives His people the ability to read and interpret His Word, for we are a kingdom of priests (1 Peter 2:9), each able to come to the Scriptures himself.

Uwajibikaji huo haukusudiwi kumnyamazisha bali kumfanya awe mwangalifu — kumrudisha kwenye kifungu tena na tena kabla hajathubutu kusema, "Bwana asema hivi."And there is a safeguard the preacher must never forget: God holds teachers to a stricter standard. "My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment" (James 3:1, NKJV). The preacher is accountable to God in a heavier way than others, precisely because his error can lead others astray. That accountability is not meant to silence him but to make him careful — to send him back to the text again and again before he dares to say, "Thus says the Lord."

"Usipoweza kupata kifungu cha kuhubiri wazo hilo, basi huenda ni wazo lako, wala si la Bwana.""If you cannot find a text to preach the idea, then it may be your idea and not the Lord's."

Siku ya 4 — Viungo Vinne vya Mahubiri Yenye MafanikioDay 4 — The Four Ingredients of Successful Preaching

1. Tafsiri. Hutoi mahubiri tu. Unahubiri kutoka nafsini.1. Interpretation. This is harder than it looks. It calls for knowledge of the history, geography, theology, and setting of Scripture, and ideally its languages. The governing rule is one to write on the wall of the study: the subject of the sermon must be the subject of the text. Where the two part company, the preacher has stopped interpreting and started inventing — the words of Scripture may still be on his lips, but the meaning is now his own. Sound interpretation is simply the discipline of drawing God’s meaning out of the text rather than reading the preacher’s meaning into it. 2. Knowledge of people. This is not an academic degree in psychology but a sensitivity to the real concerns and needs of the listeners — the griefs they carry unseen, the fears they will not name aloud, the questions they are actually asking. A sermon perfectly true and perfectly aimed at no one will land on no one. The preacher who knows his people preaches the same doctrine differently to the grieving widow and the careless young man, because he is aiming the one truth at two different hearts. 3. Arrangement and style. The style should be simple, clear, and pictorial; good illustrations can make a sermon. Five marks tell a good outline from a poor one, and they work together — weakness in any one weakens the whole. Unity: the sermon is about one thing, not three or five; this is the most important mark, for without it nothing else will hold, and the keyword is your chief tool for it, since every division must be a particular instance of the keyword. Order: each division is distinct, and they fall in a sequence that makes sense. Movement: the sermon progresses and peaks, usually at the invitation, rather than circling in place. Parallel: the points are worded alike where possible, so the ear can hold them. Proportion: the points are balanced in length and weight, none swallowing the others. 4. Delivery. A sermon is not a sermon until it has been heard, and there is no single right method — some men read a full manuscript, as Jonathan Edwards did, while others preach extemporaneously with few notes or none; each preacher must find the way that fits his own gifts. But two things rise above method. The first is to occupy the space. Whatever the size of the room, project and preach as though you have gathered everyone into one bubble with you; the preacher takes responsibility for the whole room and fills it with his presence, not merely his volume. The second is harder to put into words, and it is the deepest thing in this lesson: preaching is not something you do, but something you are. The sermon is not a parcel you hand across a counter; it comes up out of the soul, and you cannot finally separate the message from the man. This is why the one trait the great preachers share is enthusiasm — not volume, not oratory, not technique, none of which can manufacture it — but the overflow of a man who so believes what he is saying that it has become part of him. You do not give a sermon. You preach from the soul.

Siku ya 5 — Kushughulikia Mahubiri ya Kimafundisho Vizuri (Muhtasari)Day 5 — Handling the Doctrinal Sermon Well (Summary)

Three counsels guide the doctrinal preacher over a lifetime. Be comprehensive: over time, preach across the whole range of doctrine, not only your favorites. Be positive in tone, most of the time. Be clear: avoid theological jargon and use everyday language, so that ordinary believers are trained to be theologians themselves — which matters all the more for the lone student far from a seminary.

So Unit 1 has set the vision: doctrine must be preached, for understanding and for life; and a sermon can be topical and deductive yet fully biblical, because every point rests on its own text and the whole moves toward a response. Unit 2 puts the tools in your hand — text, idea, interrogative, keyword, and subject — and Units 3 through 10 run that method across the great doctrines one by one.

"Lihubiri neno, uwe tayari wakati ukufaao na wakati usiokufaa." — 2 Timotheo 4:2 (SUV)"Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season." — 2 Timothy 4:2 (NKJV)
