Tunachohifadhi.
Siku ya 1 — Kwa Nini Tunamaliza Kozi HapaDay 1 — Why End the Course Here
Every other doctrine has prepared for this one. Revelation told us God has spoken; God, Man, Christ, the Spirit, Salvation, and the Church have unfolded His work; and now Last Things tells us where it is all going. This is the doctrine of hope, and it is the natural close of a preaching course because it is where every faithful sermon finally points: to the return of Christ and the world to come.
But it is also the doctrine most often preached badly — turned into a chart of dates, a map of current events, a contest of theories. The pastoral aim is the opposite: to comfort the grieving, to sober the careless, and to fix the hearer’s hope on Christ Himself rather than on a timeline.
Hold the doctrine; keep it compressed and point students to ST Unit 10. Death is not the end but a doorway; the believer who dies is “absent from the body and present with the Lord.” The return of Christ is personal, visible, and certain — He will come again as He went. The resurrection raises the body; our hope is not a disembodied soul but a redeemed and glorified body. The judgment is real: all will stand before God. The final state is eternal — the unbroken joy of God’s presence for those who are His, or the everlasting loss of it for those who are not. Hold these five together and you have the whole hope: the believer who dies is at once with the Lord; the Lord Himself will return in person; the body will be raised and not merely the soul preserved; every life will be weighed before God; and the end is not annihilation but eternity, on one side of that presence or the other. None of this is morbid speculation — it is the spine of Christian hope, and the reason a believer can stand at a graveside and not grieve as those who have none. The course holds these humbly and non-denominationally, distinguishing the certainties (He will return; the dead will rise; we shall be like Him) from the disputed details of timing and sequence, and it refuses to let the disputes crowd out the hope.
Siku ya 3 — Hatua ya Kiuhubiri (mfano wa kazi kutoka Sehemu ya 2, sasa umekuzwa)Day 3 — The Homiletical Move (the worked example from Unit 2, now developed)
Neno kiini: maswali. Hoja tatu, kila moja swali lenye kifungu chake:Back in Unit 2 we sketched this outline to show how a subject becomes points. Now we develop it as a finished sermon. Subject: the return of Christ. Interrogative: the doctrine answers the questions every honest heart asks. Keyword: questions. Three points, each a question with its own text:
| Hoja (neno kiini: maswali)Point (keyword: questions) | Kifungu cha msingiAnchor text |
|---|---|
| 1. Atakuja lini? — Hakuna ajuaye; kuweni tayari1. When will He come? — No one knows; be ready | Mathayo 24:36, 44Matthew 24:36, 44 |
| 2. Nini kitatokea atakapokuja? — Wafu wanafufuka, tunakusanywa2. What will happen when He comes? — The dead rise, we are gathered | 1 Wathesalonike 4:16–171 Thessalonians 4:16–17 |
| 3. Tutakuwa nini? — Tutafanana naye3. What will we become? — We shall be like Him | 1 Yohana 3:21 John 3:2 |
Angalia mpangilio uliokusudiwa. Notice the deliberate order. The first question humbles our curiosity (we are not told the date). The second steadies our grief (death does not win). The third lifts our hope to its height (we shall be like Christ) — and that is where the sermon should peak.
Before developing the peak point, let the first two questions be understood for what they are.
1. Atakuja lini? — Hakuna ajuaye; kuweni tayari (Mathayo 24:36, 44). When will He come? — No one knows; be ready (Matthew 24:36, 44). “Of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.” If the day was hidden even from the angels, the preacher who claims to have found it on a chart claims more than Scripture allows. History is full of the wreckage of those who tried: the Baptist lay-preacher William Miller worked the prophecies of Daniel and announced that Christ would return on October 22, 1844; tens of thousands believed him, some gave away all they had — and the day came and went, and it is remembered still as the Great Disappointment. The lesson is not that the promise failed but that the date-setters did. So Jesus draws the practical conclusion Himself: “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” The point of not knowing the day is not to make us calculate harder, but to make us live ready every day.
2. Nini kitatokea atakapokuja? — Wafu wanafufuka, tunakusanywa (1 Wathesalonike 4:16–17). What will happen when He comes? — The dead rise, we are gathered (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17). “The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout ... and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them ... to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.” Here is the answer to the grave. Death does not get the last word over those who belong to Christ; it only holds them for a while, and at the shout it must give them back. Notice why Paul wrote it — not to feed speculation, but for comfort: “therefore comfort one another with these words.” This is the question to preach at the graveside, to the widow, to the parent who has buried a child: the One who is coming will raise our dead, and we shall all be together, and with Him, forever. And mark what rises: not a ghost, not a shadow, but the body itself, raised and made glorious — the same Christian hope that let the early church bury its dead facing the sunrise, in the sure expectation that the grave is a bed and not a grave at all. We do not merely survive death; we are raised out of it.
3. Tutakuwa nini? — Tutafanana naye (1 Yohana 3:2). Hiki ndicho kilele cha maswali matatu, nasi tunakikuza kikamilifu hapa chini — uhakika kwamba tutakapomwona Kristo kama alivyo, hatimaye tutafanywa kufanana naye.3. What will we become? — We shall be like Him (1 John 3:2). This is the height of the three, and we develop it in full below — the certainty that when we see Christ as He is, we shall at last be made like Him.
Siku ya 4 — Kuikuza Hoja ya Kilele (E-A-I)Day 4 — Developing the Peak Point (E-A-I)
Hoja ya 3, “Tutakuwa nini?” (1 Yohana 3:2), imekuzwa kikamilifu kama kilele:Point 3, “What will we become?” (1 John 3:2), developed in full as the climax:
Siku ya 5 — Maelezo ya Ufundi na Hitimisho la KoziDay 5 — Craft Notes and the Close of the Course
Three cautions, the first two especially for this doctrine. Do not preach a chart. Resist turning the sermon into date-setting or a survey of competing schemes; even where you hold a view, preach the certainties and hold the disputes humbly. (The Great Disappointment of 1844, told under Question 1, is the warning to cite.) Preach to both the grieving and the careless. The same return that comforts the mourner warns the complacent; reach both. Let the doctrine of hope arc to the invitation — because He is coming and we shall be like Him, the call is to be ready and to live now in the light of that day.
And so the course closes where preaching itself closes. You began in Unit 1 asking what doctrinal preaching is; you learned the method in Unit 2; and Units 3 through 10 ran that method across the whole body of Christian doctrine — each doctrine given a lean backbone, a subject and keyword, points anchored to texts, one point developed by Explanation, Application, and Illustration, and an arc toward response. The thesis held throughout: doctrinal preaching is topical and deductive, yet fully biblical, because every point rests on its own text. If you cannot find a text to preach the idea, it may be your idea and not the Lord’s. Go, and preach the whole counsel of God.
