UtanguliziOrientation

Evangelism is not a modern invention, nor is it a program developed by the church to increase attendance or influence. It is rooted in the very nature and purpose of God as revealed in Scripture. From Genesis to Revelation, God is revealed as One who seeks, calls, redeems, and restores. Evangelism, therefore, is not merely an activity of the church—it is participation in the work of God Himself.

To understand evangelism rightly, we must begin not with methods or techniques, but with Scripture. Programs come and go; cultural strategies shift; but the biblical foundation of evangelism remains unchanged. Real evangelism is something that is caught more than taught. It is a passion rather than a program. And, as George Sweazy observed, a church always tends to drift away from evangelism, never toward it. The cure for that drift is not better technique but a deeper anchor in the Word of God. Only when evangelism is grounded in Scripture will it remain faithful, effective, and spiritually sound.

I. Uinjilisti Moyoni mwa MunguI. Evangelism in the Heart of God

Baada ya anguko la mwanadamu katika Mwanzo 3, si Adamu anayemtafuta Mungu, bali ni Mungu anayeita:The origin of evangelism is found in God. It is God who takes the initiative in salvation. After the fall of man in Genesis 3, it is not Adam who seeks God, but God who calls out:

"BWANA Mungu akamwita Adamu, akamwambia, Uko wapi?" (Mwanzo 3:9, SUV)"Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, 'Where are you?'" (Genesis 3:9, NKJV)

Mungu anamtafuta Ibrahimu huko Uru. Mungu anamtafuta Musa kwenye kichaka kinachowaka moto. Mungu anamtafuta Daudi kati ya kondoo. Mungu anamtafuta Isaya hekaluni. Yesu Mwenyewe alitangaza:The first recorded question in human history is a question of seeking love. Before any human voice cries out for redemption, the divine voice is already searching the garden. This pattern continues throughout Scripture. God seeks Abraham in Ur. God seeks Moses at the burning bush. God seeks David among the sheep. God seeks Isaiah in the temple. Jesus Himself declared:

(Luka 19:10, SUV)"for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." (Luke 19:10, NKJV)

Basi, uinjilisti kimsingi hauhusu mwanadamu kujinyoosha juu kumfikia Mungu, bali Mungu kujinyoosha chini kumfikia mwanadamu. Waamini wanapoinjilisha, wanajiunga na kazi ambayo Mungu tayari ameianzisha. Mwamini hazalishi hamu ya kiroho; Mungu huuandaa moyo. Mwamini haubuni ujumbe; Mungu aliufunua. Mwamini haiokoi nafsi; Mungu huikomboa. Mwinjilisti ni mshiriki, si mwanzilishi.Evangelism, then, is not primarily about man reaching up to God, but about God reaching down to man. When believers evangelize, they are joining in a work that God has already initiated. The believer does not generate spiritual interest; God prepares the heart. The believer does not invent the message; God revealed it. The believer does not save the soul; God redeems it. The evangelist is a participant, not the originator.

II. Uinjilisti katika Agano la KaleII. Evangelism in the Old Testament

In Thus It Is Written, Henry Goerner traces what he calls God's plan to win the entire human family. The original purpose was breathtaking in scope: the whole human race was to come to God. But the race grew worse and worse. The wickedness of mankind brought the flood, sparing only Noah. After the flood, the same pattern reasserted itself; the people disobeyed God and tried to build a tower up to heaven, and God confused their language and scattered them across the earth.

Wito kwa watu wote ulipokosa kufanikiwa, Mungu alichukua njia nyingine. Angeanza na mtu mmoja, Ibrahimu, na kupitia yeye aufikie ulimwengu:When the call of all men did not succeed, God adopted another approach. He would begin with one man, Abraham, and through him reach the world:

(Mwanzo 12:3, SUV)"...and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." (Genesis 12:3, NKJV)

Waliitwa kuwaAbraham's descendants, the Hebrew people, were chosen to tell others about God. They were called to be

"ufalme wa makuhani, na taifa takatifu." (Kutoka 19:6, SUV)"a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." (Exodus 19:6, NKJV)

The tragedy of Israel is that they thought they were chosen for privilege rather than for service. Like a golden thread running through the Old Testament is God's desire to bring salvation to the whole world. It is the dominant idea from Genesis to Malachi. Paul would later say that the Hebrews were entrusted with the very words of God—yet they failed to perform the function for which they were chosen. The book of Jonah remains the Old Testament's clearest portrait of a reluctant missionary, and of a God whose mercy reaches beyond the borders of His chosen people. Rahab the Canaanite, Ruth the Moabite, and Naaman the Syrian all enter the redemptive narrative as evidence that God's heart never beat for one nation alone.

III. Uinjilisti katika Huduma ya KristoIII. Evangelism in the Ministry of Christ

Israeli ilipokataa wito wake, Mungu hakuliacha kusudi lake. Alitimiza kupitia Mwanawe kile ambacho hakingeweza kutimizwa kupitia wanadamu wasio waaminifu. Hata hivyo, hata mwanzoni mwa huduma yake, Yesu aliwahubiri Wayahudi peke yao, akiwapa nafasi moja ya mwisho ya kutimiza wito wao. Walikataa. Akawaambia:When Israel refused her calling, God did not abandon His purpose. He accomplished through His Son what He could not accomplish through unfaithful men. Yet even at the beginning of His ministry, Jesus preached to the Jews exclusively, giving them one last opportunity to fulfill their calling. They refused. To them He said:

(Mathayo 21:43, SUV)"Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it." (Matthew 21:43, NKJV)

Wanafunzi wakawa wa kwanza wa watu wateule wapya, warithi wa ahadi. Yesu akawaambia:The disciples became the first of a new chosen people, the inheritors of the promise. To them Jesus said:

"Amani iwe kwenu; kama vile Baba alivyonituma mimi, mimi nami nawatuma ninyi." (Yohana 20:21, SUV)"Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." (John 20:21, NKJV)

In The Master Plan of Evangelism, Robert Coleman draws several principles from Jesus' approach. Five of them frame this unit. First, men were His method. Jesus did not institute a program; He called unlearned men to be fishers of other men, concentrating most of His time on the twelve, and especially the inner three. Second, He stayed with them. As time grew short, He spent more time with them, not less. Third, He required obedience. The crowds enjoyed the feeding and healing, but fell away as the cost became clear. Fourth, He gave Himself away—from footwashing to the cross. Fifth, He showed them how to live; He prayed, He quoted Scripture, and He took witnessing opportunities until His followers had a burning desire to imitate Him. The same Christ who taught crowds also paused for Nicodemus by night (John 3), the woman at the well (John 4), Zacchaeus the tax collector (Luke 19), and the rich young ruler (Matthew 19).

IV. Agizo KuuIV. The Great Commission

Baada ya ufufuo wake, Yesu aliwapa wafuasi wake amri iliyo wazi:After His resurrection, Jesus gave a clear command to His followers:

(Mathayo 28:19–20, SUV)"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19–20, NKJV)

Na tena:And again:

"Enendeni ulimwenguni mwote, mkaihubiri Injili kwa kila kiumbe." (Marko 16:15, SUV)"Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15, NKJV)

Hili si pendekezo, bali ni amri. Uinjilisti si jambo la hiari kwa mwamini. Ni sehemu ya kumtii Kristo. Agizo hili lina matendo manne: kwenda, kufanya wanafunzi, kubatiza, na kufundisha. Kwenda kunahitaji kuondoka mahali ulipo. Kufanya wanafunzi kunahitaji uvumilivu. Kubatiza kunahitaji kujitambulisha hadharani na Kristo na kanisa lake. Kufundisha kunahitaji maudhui. Lengo si maamuzi tu, bali maisha yaliyobadilishwa yanayomfuata Kristo. This is not a suggestion, but a command. Evangelism is not optional for the believer. It is part of obedience to Christ. The commission contains four actions: going, making disciples, baptizing, and teaching. Going requires movement. Making disciples requires patience. Baptizing requires public identification with Christ and His church. Teaching requires content. The goal is not merely decisions, but transformed lives that follow Christ. Paul declared that the church is now the New Israel and the children of the promise (Romans 9:8). But any church that fails to tell others about God is breaking the terms of the contract and has no right to call itself a church.

Gabrieli, akijua jinsi wanadamu walivyo dhaifu, anasisitiza, "Lakini je, wakichoka? Je, wale watakaokuja baada yao wakisahau? Je, hujafanya mipango mingine yoyote?" Naye Yesu anajibu, "Sijafanya mipango mingine yoyote. Ninawategemea wao."Joseph Aldrich, in Lifestyle Evangelism, retells a fictional conversation between Jesus and the angel Gabriel after the ascension. Gabriel asks, "What plan have You made to let everyone know about Your love?" Jesus replies, "I've asked Peter, James, John, and a few friends to tell others. Those who are told will tell others, and My story will spread to the farthest reaches of the globe." Gabriel, knowing what poor stuff men are made of, presses, "But what if they grow weary? What if those who come after them forget? Haven't You made any other plans?" And Jesus answers, "I haven't made any other plans. I'm counting on them."

V. Kazi ya Roho MtakatifuV. The Role of the Holy Spirit

Yesu aliwaambia wanafunzi wake:Evangelism is not carried out in human strength alone. Jesus told His disciples:

(Matendo 1:8, SUV)"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8, NKJV)

The Holy Spirit empowers, guides, and convicts. Without Him, evangelism becomes mere human effort. With Him, it becomes a work of divine power. The Spirit works in ways the evangelist cannot see or control. He prepares hearts long before the believer arrives. He brings conviction when the believer has run out of words. He draws individuals to Christ when every visible reason for response has failed. The believer's responsibility is to be faithful; the Spirit's role is to bring life. Where this distinction is lost, evangelism either becomes manipulative—pressing for results the human heart cannot produce—or it becomes timid, doubting that any word could matter. The biblical posture is neither. It is confident dependence: the believer speaks because Christ has commanded, and trusts because the Spirit is at work.

VI. Uaminifu Kuliko MatokeoVI. Faithfulness Over Results

Maandiko yanafundisha vinginevyo:One of the greatest misunderstandings in evangelism is that success is measured by visible results. Scripture teaches otherwise:

"Mimi nilipanda, Apolo akatia maji; bali Mungu akakuza." (1 Wakorintho 3:6, SUV)"I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase." (1 Corinthians 3:6, NKJV)

The responsibility of the believer is not to produce conversion, but to faithfully communicate the gospel. Results belong to God. This perspective removes pressure and restores proportion. Research suggests the average person hears the gospel more than seven times before responding, and that the great majority of conversions take place not at events but in one-on-one settings. The faithful word spoken over coffee may be the seventh seed, the one God uses for the harvest. Paul could plant. Apollos could water. Neither could command growth. The evangelist is protected by this truth from two equal and opposite errors. Pride says, "I won them." Despair says, "I cannot reach them." Both are answered by the same verse. The first hand plants; the second waters; but only God gives the increase.

VII. Kielelezo na MatumiziVII. Illustration and Application

Brad Johnson, katika kitabu The Unchurched Today: What Will It Take to Reach Them? Kisha, siku ya mashindano inapofika, ninaangalia tu kumbukumbu zangu na kwenda kuvua pale samaki walipo."Brad Johnson, in The Unchurched Today: What Will It Take to Reach Them?, tells of a state fishing champion who was asked how he won so consistently. The champion answered: "I go to the lake weeks before a tournament. I go in the morning, at noon, and at night. I check wind speed, water and air temperatures, and the feeding patterns of the fish. Then, when the day of the tournament arrives, I simply check my notes and go fishing where the fish are."

The illustration is not accidental. The serious fisher of men, like the champion, observes, prepares, and studies the conditions before he casts the net. Where are the unchurched in this city? What burdens are they carrying? What questions are they asking? What seasons of life make them most receptive? The New Testament shows at least three patterns: personal evangelism, the "go and tell" of the early house-to-house witness; mass evangelism, the "come and see" of Pentecost, of Wesley, Whitefield, and Finney; and lifestyle evangelism, the "go and live" that Aldrich describes—a transformed life that provokes the question, "How can I get what you have?"

For application, three commitments follow from this unit. First, anchor evangelism in Scripture, not technique. Second, depend on the Holy Spirit, not personality. Third, measure obedience, not outcomes. Real evangelism is caught more than taught—and it is caught from believers who have been gripped first by the God who seeks the lost.

HitimishoConclusion

Evangelism begins with God, is revealed in Scripture, modeled by Christ, commanded to believers, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. It is not a human invention, nor is it dependent upon technique. It is participation in the redemptive work of God. To engage in evangelism is to step into what God is already doing—to faithfully proclaim truth, trusting Him to bring the result. The disciples were the first to hear the words, "I'm counting on you." The same words echo to every believer today.
