Utangulizi: Injili Ina Maudhui Yaliyo DhahiriOrientation: The Gospel Has Definitive Content
Units 1 and 2 established that evangelism is the clear and faithful communication of the gospel. But what is the gospel? Until the believer can answer that question with specific, biblical content, his evangelism will drift toward sentiment, opinion, or personal experience. The gospel is not what we feel about Christ; it is what God has done in Christ, and that has fixed content.
This unit organizes the content of the gospel around the four-point framework long used in Continuing Witness Training (CWT): God's Purpose, Our Need, God's Provision, and Our Response. The four points are not the only way to present the gospel, but they form a faithful spine the witness can carry into any conversation, on any continent, with any hearer. When these four are clear, the message is clear; when any of them is missing, the gospel is no longer the gospel.
I. Kusudi la Mungu: Wokovu kwa UlimwenguI. God's Purpose: Salvation for the World
The gospel begins not with man, but with God. Specifically, it begins with what God has purposed from the beginning. Henry Goerner, in Thus It Is Written, traces a single golden thread running through the entire Old Testament: God's desire to bring salvation to the whole world. The call of Abraham was for the blessing of all families of the earth (Genesis 12:3). Israel was set apart as a kingdom of priests for the nations (Exodus 19:6). And when Israel refused the calling, God accomplished through His Son what He could not accomplish through unfaithful men.
Yeye ni mtakatifu:God's purpose is rooted in His character. He is holy:
(Isaya 6:3, SUV)"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!" (Isaiah 6:3, NKJV)
Yeye pia ni mvumilivu na mwenye upendo:He is also patient and loving:
"Bwana hakawii kuitimiza ahadi yake, kama wengine wanavyodhani kukawia; bali huvumilia kwenu, maana hapendi mtu ye yote apotee, bali wote wafikilie toba." (2 Petro 3:9, SUV)"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9, NKJV)
The holiness and the love of God are not in tension; they meet at the cross. A holy God cannot ignore sin, and a loving God will not abandon sinners. The gospel is the announcement of how both are perfectly satisfied in Christ. God's purpose is therefore not narrow but global: that men from every tribe, tongue, and nation come to know Him.
II. Hitaji Letu: Wote Wamefanya DhambiII. Our Need: All Have Sinned
Maandiko yako wazi kabisa:If the gospel begins with God's character, it must immediately confront man's condition. Scripture is unambiguous:
(Warumi 3:23, SUV)"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23, NKJV)
Dhambi imeenea kwa wote, ina kina kikubwa mno, na matokeo yake ni mauti:Sin is not merely a social mistake, a cultural flaw, or a failure of education. Sin is rebellion against the holy Creator. Jesus taught that sin originates in the heart, not in the circumstances: "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness" (Mark 7:21–22, NKJV). Sin is universal in scope, radical in depth, and deadly in consequence:
(Warumi 6:23, SUV)"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23, NKJV)
The death of which Scripture speaks is not merely physical. It includes spiritual separation from God now and, apart from Christ, eternal separation from God forever. A gospel that softens this point may produce comfort, but it cannot produce salvation. The hearer who has not been shown his need will see no reason for a Savior. As one old preacher said, the man who has not been wounded by the law will not be healed by the gospel. The witness must therefore speak honestly about sin—not crudely, not with self-righteousness, but honestly. The doctor who minimizes the diagnosis becomes complicit in the patient's death.
III. Maandalizi ya Mungu: Nafsi na Kazi ya KristoIII. God's Provision: The Person and Work of Christ
Yeye ni Mungu aliyefanyika mwili:Having established the problem—God's holiness and man's sin—the gospel announces the only solution: Jesus Christ. He is no mere prophet, no moral teacher, no founder of a religion. He is God incarnate:
(Yohana 1:14, SUV)"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14, NKJV)
The incarnation was not optional. Only a man could die for men; only God could satisfy the infinite weight of divine justice against sin. The God-Man Jesus Christ qualified perfectly. He lived a sinless life, faced every temptation, and remained without sin (Hebrews 4:15). Then He went to the cross—not as a tragic victim, but as a willing substitute. Paul states the heart of the gospel in a single, breathtaking verse:
(2 Wakorintho 5:21, SUV)"For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." (2 Corinthians 5:21, NKJV)
Huu ndio ubadilishanaji mkuu. Baba alimwekea Mwana adhabu kamili ambayo haki yake ilidai:This is the great exchange. The sinless One was treated as if He were the sinner. The sinner who trusts Him is treated as if he were sinless. The Father laid upon the Son the full penalty His justice demanded:
(Warumi 5:8, SUV)"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8, NKJV)
The resurrection confirms that the Father accepted the Son's sacrifice. A dead Christ saves no one. The resurrection is not a postscript to the gospel; it is essential to it. Paul wrote that if Christ is not risen, faith itself is vain (1 Corinthians 15:17). Therefore, no presentation of the gospel is complete that omits either the cross or the empty tomb. Christ Himself declared the exclusivity of His work:
(Yohana 14:6, SUV)"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" (John 14:6, NKJV)
IV. Mwitikio Wetu: Toba na ImaniIV. Our Response: Repentance and Faith
Injili haitoi habari tu. Inaamuru mwitikio. Na Paulo alimpa mlinzi wa gereza huko Filipi jibu rahisi kuliko yote lililowahi kutolewa kwa swali, "Imenipasa kufanya nini ili niokoke?":The gospel does not merely inform. It commands a response. That response is twofold: repentance and faith. Jesus opened His public ministry with both: "Repent, and believe in the gospel" (Mark 1:15, NKJV). Peter ended his Pentecost sermon the same way: "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38, NKJV). And Paul gave the jailer in Philippi the simplest answer ever given to the question, "What must I do to be saved?":
"Mwamini Bwana Yesu, nawe utaokoka pamoja na nyumba yako." (Matendo 16:31, SUV)"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (Acts 16:31, NKJV)
Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of direction. It is not mere regret over consequences. It is a turning from sin toward God, a forsaking of the old master to receive a new one. Faith is the other side of the same response. Saving faith is more than intellectual agreement—James warns that the demons believe and tremble (James 2:19). Saving faith is personal trust in Christ alone for salvation, receiving Him as He is offered in the gospel: as Lord and Savior. Repentance and faith are inseparable. One cannot trust Christ as Savior without turning from sin, nor can one genuinely turn from sin without trusting Christ.
V. Wokovu kwa Neema Peke YakeV. Salvation by Grace Alone
Lakini Injili inatangaza jambo lisilowazika:If salvation depended on human effort, no one would be saved. Every honest soul knows that even his best deeds are stained. But the gospel declares the unimaginable:
(Waefeso 2:8–9, SUV)"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." (Ephesians 2:8–9, NKJV)
Grace is God's unmerited favor. Faith is the empty hand that receives it. Even the faith that receives is itself a gift. This truth guards against two opposite errors. Legalism adds works to grace and ends in pride or despair. License treats grace as permission to sin and ends in slavery. True grace produces a transformed life—not as the root of salvation, but as its fruit. The believer works not for acceptance but from it.
VI. Hatari ya Injili za UongoVI. The Danger of False Gospels
Shahidi mwaminifu huukataa wote.Paul was emphatic: "But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:8, NKJV). A false gospel is not merely an incomplete gospel; it is a different gospel that cannot save. Four common distortions today are easy to name. First, a gospel that omits sin and judgment makes the cross unnecessary and produces shallow converts. Second, easy-believism reduces faith to a mere decision without repentance, leaving the will untouched. Third, legalism adds works or sacraments to grace, dishonoring Christ's finished work. Fourth, the prosperity gospel focuses on present benefits—health, wealth, success—rather than forgiveness and new life. Each distortion misrepresents the character of God and the work of Christ. The faithful witness rejects them all.
VII. Kielelezo: Mahakama na MbadalaVII. Illustration: The Courtroom and the Substitute
Imagine a sinner standing before the judgment seat of a holy God. The evidence is overwhelming; the verdict is just; the sentence is eternal. Then the Judge Himself stands, removes His robe, and steps into the dock. "I will take his punishment," He says. "Let him go free." That is the gospel. The Judge satisfies His own justice by bearing the penalty Himself. God does not ignore sin; He punishes it—but He punishes it in the person of His own Son. The sinner who trusts in that Substitute is declared righteous, not because of anything he has done, but because of what Christ has done for him.
Hitimisho: Ujumbe Ulio SahihiConclusion: A Precise Message
The gospel is precise. It announces God's purpose for the world, exposes man's need before a holy God, presents God's provision in the person and work of Christ, and calls every hearer to respond in repentance and faith. Any message that alters, adds to, or subtracts from these elements is not the gospel. Faithful evangelism therefore requires both boldness and accuracy. The messenger must know the message and proclaim it without apology, for "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17, NKJV). Let us be careful to preach the word—the whole word—concerning Christ.
A prayer for the student: Lord, give us clarity and conviction. Help us to grasp the weight of the gospel and to proclaim it faithfully. Protect us from adding to or subtracting from Your truth. May we never be ashamed of this gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation. In Christ's name, Amen.
