Utangulizi: Mahubiri Katika Ubora Wake wa JuuOrientation: Preaching at Its Best

Personal evangelism is the most common form of gospel proclamation, but it is not the only form. From Peter at Pentecost to Whitefield in the fields and Spurgeon in the Tabernacle, God has used public proclamation to gather thousands. Faris Whitesell put it sharply: "Evangelistic preaching is preaching at its best. It is preaching adapted to the highest ends of the gospel — turning men from sin and darkness to salvation and light. Evangelistic preaching is preaching with a mission — an immediate and all-important mission — winning a verdict in favor of the Lord Jesus Christ." V. L. Stanfield offered the simpler definition: "the public proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ" with a view to gaining acceptance. Both definitions point to the same heart: a public, biblical, Spirit-empowered call to receive Christ.

This unit examines what evangelistic preaching is, the New Testament terms for proclamation, the two things every evangelistic sermon must do, the presuppositions that make such preaching possible, the necessity of clarity and scriptural authority, dependence on the Spirit, the invitation, and the herald image that anchors the preacher's identity.

I. Fasili Sita Zinazonoa Msamiati WetuI. Six Definitions That Sharpen Our Vocabulary

Kuyatofautisha huzuia mkanganyiko. The English word "evangelism" carries a family of related terms. Distinguishing them prevents confusion.

  • Evangel (Injili) — "habari njema" yenyewe. Ujumbe kuhusu kile ambacho Mungu amefanya katika Kristo.Evangel — the "good news" itself. The message about what God has done in Christ.
  • Evangelism (Uinjilisti) — kuiwasilisha habari njema hiyo ili watu waipokee.Evangelism — presenting that good news so that people receive it.
  • Evangelist (Mwinjilisti) — mtu anayebeba habari njema. Kwa maana hii kila mchungaji ni mwinjilisti.Evangelist — one who carries the good news. Every pastor is in this sense an evangelist.
  • Evangelistic (-a kiinjilisti) — inayotambulika kwa kueneza habari njema kwa uharaka.Evangelistic — characterized by urgently propagating the good news.
Evangelical — one who endorses the work and emphasizes the receiving of the good news.
Evangelistic Preaching — public proclamation of the gospel with the aim of conversion.

One distinction is especially worth weighing: it is possible to be evangelical without being evangelistic. A church can hold orthodox doctrine, sing the right hymns, and never call a sinner to repent. The label is correct; the labor is missing. Evangelistic preaching exists to close that gap.

II. Maneno ya Agano Jipya ya KuhubiriII. The New Testament Terms for Preaching

Kila moja linaongeza upande mpya.Warren Wiersbe identifies several Greek words behind "preaching" in the New Testament. Each adds a dimension.

  • Euangelizomai — "kusema habari njema" (mara 52). Kitenzi cha msingi cha kutangaza Injili.Euangelizomai — "to tell good news" (52 times). The fundamental verb of gospel proclamation.
Kerussein — "to proclaim like a herald" (52 times). The related noun keryx (herald) and kerygma (proclamation) anchor the image.
  • Marturein — "kushuhudia." Yohana hutumia neno hili karibu peke yake. Kuhubiri kutoka moyoni.Marturein — "to bear witness." John uses this word almost exclusively. Preaching from the heart.
  • Lalein — "kuzungumza" (mara 6). Lalein — "to talk" (6 times). Suggests a certain naturalness; preaching is conversation projected.
  • Didaskein — "kufundisha" (mara 95). Mimbari pia ni darasa.Didaskein — "to teach" (95 times). The pulpit is also a classroom.

The image that dominates is the keryx — the herald. In the Greek and Roman world the herald was the official announcer for the state. He had to have a clear voice and reliable character. He did not invent the message; he proclaimed it. John the Baptist is the first New Testament herald, announcing the coming Messiah. Every evangelistic preacher follows in that line: he carries another's message.

III. Mambo Mawili Ambayo Kila Hubiri la Kiinjilisti ni Lazima LifanyeIII. The Two Things Every Evangelistic Sermon Must Do

Chevis Horne, in Dynamic Preaching, observes that evangelistic preaching is the preaching we must do first — if a man has a broken arm it must be set, and if he has a broken relationship with God it must be healed before anything else. Two things are essential.

1. Habari njema inatangazwa. The good news is announced. Evangelism means good news. To a lost person, it says, "Here is light." To one in chains, "You can be free." To the hungry, "Here is bread." To the blind, "You can see." To the dying, "You can live." Frederick Buechner adds that before it is good news, the gospel is bad news — a man is a sinner; that is tragedy. Against the bad news dawns the morning: God loves us anyway. That is comedy. It is too good to be true. That is fairy tale. Every evangelistic sermon must travel that arc — tragedy, sought, found — just as the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son travel it in Luke 15.

2. Jambo fulani linadaiwa. Something is called for. Information is not enough. The sermon must call for repentance, faith, confession, and incorporation into the church. Peter at Pentecost closed his sermon with a direct command: "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ" (Acts 2:38, NKJV). A sermon that announces the gospel but never asks for response has done half the work and left the soul at the threshold.

IV. Misingi Tisa ya Imani Inayowezesha Mahubiri ya KiinjilistiIV. Nine Presuppositions That Make Evangelistic Preaching Possible

Jay Brown distills the convictions on which evangelistic preaching rests. They are not optional theological flourishes; without them, the preacher will not preach evangelistically.

Misingi ya Imani ya BrownBrown's Presuppositions

  1. Watu wasio na Kristo wamepotea (Yohana 3:18). Hawana Mungu wala tumaini.People without Christ are lost (John 3:18). They are without God and without hope.
  2. Kuhubiri ndiyo njia kuu ya Mungu ya kuwaokoa waliopotea (Warumi 10:14).Preaching is God's chief means for saving the lost (Romans 10:14).
The pulpit is the preacher's greatest opportunity to evangelize — more people are reached at once than in any other engagement.
  4. Kristo ndiye njia pekee ya Mungu ya wokovu (Yohana 14:6). Si moja kati ya nyingi.Christ is God's only means of salvation (John 14:6). Not one among many.
  5. Roho Mtakatifu anaweza kuleta matukio yanayobadilisha maisha wakati wa kuhubiri. The Holy Spirit can produce life-changing experiences in the act of preaching.
  6. Injili bado ni uweza wa Mungu uletao wokovu (Warumi 1:16).The gospel is still the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16).
  7. Utume wa kanisa unadai mahubiri ya kiinjilisti. Kerygma (tangazo) kuliko didache (fundisho) ndiyo inayoitofautisha imani ya Kikristo. The mission of the church demands evangelistic preaching. Kerygma more than didache distinguishes the Christian faith.
Evangelistic preaching strengthens every other ministry of the church — attendance, giving, and spiritual growth all rise when souls are being saved.
  9. Ni lazima mtu fulani afanye kazi ya kuvuna (Yohana 4:35–38; Mathayo 9:37–38).Someone must do the reaping (John 4:35–38; Matthew 9:37–38).

Inamsukuma mhubiri kwenda mimbarini.G. Campbell Morgan stated the matter starkly: "No church ought to be allowed to exist that has not added to its membership by confession of faith. If a church is existing only by letters of transfer, it is time the doors were closed, and 'Ichabod, the glory of the Lord has departed' was inscribed across them." The presuppositions are not academic. They drive the preacher to the pulpit.

V. Injili Kuwa KitovuV. The Centrality of the Gospel

Mahubiri ya kiinjilisti huuweka msalaba katikati. Paulo alitangaza, "Kwa maana naliazimu nisijue neno lo lote kwenu, ila Yesu Kristo, naye amesulibiwa" (1 Wakorintho 2:2, SUV). Injili yenyewe ndiyo uweza wa Mungu uletao wokovu (Warumi 1:16, SUV).Evangelistic preaching keeps the cross at the center. Paul declared, "For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2, NKJV). Other topics may be addressed, but the death and resurrection of Christ are the sun around which they orbit. The CWT framework remains useful even in the pulpit: God's purpose (eternal life), our need (sin), God's provision (Christ's substitutionary death and resurrection), and the required response (repentance and faith). Sermons that fill the time with stories, humor, or moral advice while avoiding the offense of the cross have not preached the gospel, no matter how engaging they may be. The gospel itself is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16, NKJV).

VI. Uwazi na Mamlaka ya MaandikoVI. Clarity and Scriptural Authority

Utangazaji wa hadharani unahitaji mawasiliano yaliyo wazi. Paulo alitumia mfano ulio hai:Public proclamation requires clear communication. Paul used a vivid analogy:

(1 Wakorintho 14:8, SUV)"For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle?" (1 Corinthians 14:8, NKJV)

Mhubiri anapaswa kujiuliza, "Kama mtu ambaye hajawahi kusoma Biblia angesikia hubiri hili, angeielewa Injili?" Kama sivyo, hubiri hilo linahitaji kurekebishwa. An uncertain trumpet confuses the soldiers. A vague sermon hinders response. The hearer must understand the message in order to respond to it. Clarity means using plain language, explaining biblical terms (grace, repentance, faith), organizing the message in a logical flow (problem → solution → response), and summarizing key points. The preacher should ask himself, "If a person who has never read the Bible heard this sermon, would he understand the gospel?" If not, the sermon needs revision.

Uwazi ni lazima uunganishwe na mamlaka. Paulo alimwagiza Timotheo, "Lihubiri neno" (2 Timotheo 4:2, SUV). Clarity must be married to authority. Paul commanded Timothy, "Preach the word!" (2 Timothy 4:2, NKJV). The authority of the message does not come from the preacher's personality, education, or emotional intensity. It comes from the Word of God. The preacher is not a source of truth; he is a herald of truth already revealed. Therefore evangelistic preaching, however topical in form, must always be expository in foundation — explaining what the Bible actually says.

VII. Kumtegemea Roho MtakatifuVII. Dependence on the Holy Spirit

As in all evangelism, preaching depends on the Spirit. Paul wrote, "And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power" (1 Corinthians 2:4, NKJV). The most carefully crafted sermon produces no spiritual fruit unless the Spirit applies it. The preacher must pray before, during, and after — relying on the Spirit for boldness, clarity, and the unseen work of conviction. He cannot manufacture conviction through emotional manipulation. Only the Spirit convicts.

Emotion may be present in evangelistic preaching, and it is not wrong — the gospel rightly moves the heart. But emotion must not replace truth. Responses based solely on emotion often lack lasting change. A person may weep at a moving story, walk an aisle, and yet not be born again. The preacher aims first at the mind — helping hearers understand the gospel — and lets the emotions follow from understanding.

VIII. Mwaliko: Kuuvuta WavuVIII. The Invitation: Drawing the Net

Evangelistic preaching calls for response. The invitation is not an emotional appendix to the sermon; it is the sermon's purpose. Peter's Pentecost sermon ended with a command, not a suggestion. Whitefield, Moody, and Graham all gave clear, urgent invitations. The shape of the invitation may vary — a private prayer, a raised hand, walking forward, a follow-up conversation — but the call must be made. The preacher should explain clearly what repentance and faith look like, name the moment of decision, and give an opportunity to respond. He must do this without manipulation. Pressure produces false converts. The Spirit produces true ones. The preacher's job is to make the way clear and the call urgent, and then to trust God for the response.

IX. Mpiga Mbiu: Picha ya KufungaIX. The Herald: A Closing Image

Mfikirie keryx katika uwanja wa hadhara. Habuni habari; anaitangaza. He does not invent the news; he announces it. He does not negotiate the king's decree; he proclaims it. He does not apologize for the message; he delivers it with urgency. His voice must be clear, his words accurate, and his demeanor faithful. If he whispers, the village does not hear. If he adds his own opinions, he distorts the message. If he apologizes, he undermines the king's authority. The evangelistic preacher is a herald for the King of Kings. Paul put it directly: "For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake" (2 Corinthians 4:5, NKJV).

Hitimisho: Utangazaji Mwaminifu, Uweza wa MunguConclusion: Faithful Proclamation, Divine Power

Evangelistic preaching is a powerful means of proclaiming the gospel. When done faithfully, it communicates truth clearly and calls for response. Its effectiveness depends not on personality or method but on faithfulness to Scripture and dependence on God. The preacher must know the gospel, speak it clearly, rely on the Spirit, call for decision, and trust God for the increase. The pulpit is a sacred trust. Those who stand in it will give an account. Let them preach Christ crucified, risen, and coming again.

Prayer: Lord, raise up heralds who will proclaim Your gospel faithfully. Give them clarity of mind, boldness of spirit, and humility of heart. Protect them from eloquence without truth, emotion without substance, and pressure without love. May every sermon be an arrow aimed at the heart, guided by Your Spirit, and effective for Your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
